How to back-up files on Tiger?

Question,
I know that Time Machine is used on Leopard and Snow Leopard, but how do you backup files on an external hard drive using Tiger? Thanks

Basic Backup
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
10. MimMac (Commercial)
11. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
12. Time Drawer (Commercial - similar to Time Machine)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
Cool Drives
OWC
WiebeTech
Firewire Direct
California Drives
NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
When there is an issue like that, often Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro can fix it. Disk Warrior is generally the preferred program. http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/index.html
You can then back up the files once you get the drive back in shape.

  • How to back up Files on Disk Utility

My Mac Book Pro doesn't start. when I press the start button It chimes, apple logo, line loading and turns off. Once and again. I tried the Comand-option-P-R and nothing. Tried a lot of tricks I found online and nothing. Finally -And Im not sure how, I think it was the Comand-R opened the Disk Utility and could hit the repair  the disk, It said that It couldn't repair -I have almost full capacity 499GB used- but cant remove files since I cant start the computer. Disk Utility told me to Back up Files and Restore -meaning it will wipe out the data, but i will have it on my back up- How do I back up using external hard drive. Thanks for any help.

You need to boot from your backup disk using:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the desired disk icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Once booted from the backup drive then:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the now erased internal drive. Source means the external backup drive.
Once booted from the backup drive you need to partition and format the internal drive:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • How to back up files on IpodTouch gen 3 & add files from 2 computers

    Hi
I have a iPod Touch (Gen 3) and add files (video, music, photos etc.) frequently on the office computer. Now if I try to add files from my home computer, I would lose my existing files that are already on the iPod, right?
How can I do a backup of what I have so far?
Also how can I add files from my home computer without erasing the rest of the files?

  • How to save .Numbers file on Tiger. It is so confusing

On my MacBook Pro using Numbers I in Tiger. It is confusing . What is happening?

Whenever you create files, it is advisable to create using relative directory structure.
You have not explained how you are compiling your program. If you use ant to compile, you have an option to specify a relative path.
    For example you say /project/first
and whatever files you create will start getting created under first.
Anyway your solution lies in using relative path to your programs, rather than absolute path..
    Hope it helps

  • How to back up files from a MacBook to an XP PC

    Hi
I am a non-professional but reasonably competent PC fixer for friends and family, within the MS Windows product set thus far.
A friend's son has dropped his MacBook and now has the '?' question mark on boot.  He has taken it to an Apple Genius, who after a bit of failed feagling with recovery disks, has confirmed it is 99.9% likely to be the Hard Drive (particularly as there is occasionally clicking, likely from the actuator) and has been (a) quoted an astronomical figure to fix and (b) has asked me to have a look.
It's got a standard 2.5" SATA drive and I have a bit of kit to turn a drive removed from a PC / Lappie into an external USB drive, which I typically use first and foremost in my other 'bad HD' related repairs to retrieve any data not corrupted by bad disk sectors.
I've connected the SATA from the MacBook to an XP notebook and can see the drive in Control Panel / Computer Management / Disc Management as a 'Healthy (GPT Protective Partition)', but cannot view it via any Explorer based functions, i.e. I cannot get the data off of it.
New ground for me and Google not offering anything illuminating; I can't assign it a Drive Letter so what, if anything can I do via XP to retrieve and back up the data as an external drive, or do I need to plug it as an external USB into another Mac?
Many thanks in advance for any information / pointers anyone can provide.

Apple format is not readable by Windows (is by late Linux distros), unless you use an application like MacDrive. Even so, do not hasten to install it, because many Apple apps and formats get corrupt in Windows. Your friend has, in fact, 2 problems: 1. he has no backup of his data (very bad and frequent behavior) 2. his disk is dead (and now finds how bad is to not have a backup).
A good backup of mac data is done to another disk formatted as HFS+ (mac os extended journaled). If you still think backing up unto a Windows PC is the only solution, then you must first ARCHIVE (zip or dmg) data on a mac, transfer archive to a PC, after replacing disk and installing the new system, move data back and unarchive it.
As Allan Eckert already wrote, this is not something recommended, but I tried to expose why. Now, with a larger horizon, you may choose best method. Tell your friend that he/she must purchase two disks: one to replace the dead one, one to be used as an external backup disk in an enclosure. At least from now on, he/she can avoid such situations.
In fact, all PCs, macs or Windows PCs, should be now sold together with an external backup disk, having at least the capacity of the internal disk. This should become the current sell policy of ALL computer manufacturers.

  • How to back up files on my windows computer to time capsule, How to back up files on my windows computer to time capsule

I bought a time capsule now I want to back op photos that are on my PC.

You keep posting but give no details..
What Windows version are you using?
Have you loaded airport utility and bonjour? This helps windows find apple resources.
Have you tried opening the TC .. it will probably not show up as a simple network resource because you have not set the workgroup in the TC.. go to the utility.. go to the disk file sharing page.. and turn on guest account for read and write access. Give the correct name WORKGROUP usually to workgroup.
Using Windows Explorer type in the TC address.. \\IPaddressTC or \\TCname.
If you hope the name is going to work, it must be SMB standard.. short no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
You can then copy files, in standard way.. I recommend you create a new directory under the single directory .. DATA or whatever it is called.
    Copy and paste, drag... same.
To backup use the now available directory as target for backup utility which must support network drives.. naturally.

  • How to recover deleted files in Tiger?

    hi,
i mistakenly deleted all my clients tax files. is there a utility or a data recovery software that i can buy to recover these files?
your comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Ouch! If there is any chance of recovery at all your best bet is Prosoft Data Rescue. There is a free trial to see if it can recover what you need. But don't do another thing on that Mac until you download and use it. Also, a service that has been recommended but I cannot personally endorse is DriveSavers.

  • How to restore backed up files after I used Rescue and Recovery

    Hi there lenovo community,
so I'm struggling to find a solution on how to open these files right here:
    Link to image
First of all, the program I used to back up my hard drive was the Rescue and Recovery that my lenovo desktop came with. I used an external hard drive (WD My Passport, specifically) to back up my old hard drive. The problem that I'm facing right now is how I can open these files, they seem to be not working with any of the option programs the "open with" thingy offers me. If anyone knows  an easy solution for this please please respond to me immediately.. I would really really appreciate it.  I have important documents there.
    Thanks,
    Enrico

  • When I backed up files on my external drive, I inadvertently dragged my itunes library there. Now I can only play songs on my laptop when my external drive is plugged in. How do I get the library back to my computer

When I was backing up files from my computer to my external drive, I inadvertently dragged my itunes library to the external drive. Now I can only play my library when my external drive is plugged into my computer. How do I get the library location changed back to my computer?

Your drive was used with a PC and formatted NTFS which is proprietary Microsoft format.
You need to install a third party program that will read the NTFS format.
There is various software from PARAGON, Tuxera and NTFS-3G
When you get the data off and have verified it to be good, reformat the drive either HFS+ for Mac use only, or for Mac and PC use then MSDOS (FAT32) for under 4GB files (best) or exFAT (for larger than 4GB files) is proprietary and Microsoft is appling for a patent, which would likely mean OS X won't be allowed to read it anymore without a licensing fee and you'l have to pay another third party software company to read the format, just like NTFS is.
The less you have to rely upon third party sources to read your drives the better, this way if you have a issue and need to read the drive on another machine you don't need the software, and a internet connection and a credit card and...and...and...

  • My itunes files were deleted. I was able to use an old back up file to restore some but new downloaded purchases from iTunes for the past 5 months weren't in the back up. How do I get those back since I've paid for them one before and use the same account

My itunes files were deleted. I was able to use an old back up file to restore some but new downloaded purchases from iTunes for the past 5 months weren't in the back up. How do I get those back since I've paid for them one before? Can you redownload? If so, how?? Please help as I'm missing over 500 previously paid for and downloaded iTunes song purchases.

This was EXACTLY what I needed about the purchases I made from my device. However, is there a way to re-download other ones you've made from a computer? Because I realized some of them were not just purchased from my device.
This is a picture of what it looks like now:
    http://tinypic.com/r/107quxu/7
As you can see, the stuff circled in red doesn't give me an option to download from Cloud Beta because it already says "downloaded".
any way to get around that?
