I want to be able to backup my iPhone 4 to an external harddrive since I don’t have enough space on my MacBook Pro hard drive, how do I dothat? I have already moved all the iTunes libraries and media folder to that externaldrive and need to know how to default the IPhone4 backup to the external drive.I am using iTunes 10.

You can do the following to get the setup you need.
Copy the contents of ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/ to the external driveThe ~ means your home drive
Then rename the folder Backup in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/ to say BackupOld
mv ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/BackupOld
Create a new linked folder to the external drive (I assume the external drive is called ExtDrive
First create a folder called iTunesBackup on the external drive
mkdir /Volumes/ExtDrive/iTunesBackup
Now create a link between where iTunes thinks the backups are and the external drive
ln -s ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup /Volumes/ExtDrive/Backup
Job done....

This was first reported 10 days ago. Had to be out of the country for a week - without photoshop working-- and now I'm back with the same problem. Can someone please help, or do I dump this and try to get some help just reloading the program?

To what did your camera record those photos and videos - camera's internal memory, inserted memory card, other?
Any remote chance that the latter may still exist for you to use to download the camera files to your new external hard drive?

I can not seem to locate any instructions on how to make a data back-up of my music on an external hard drive. I am using iTune 6.0.3 on my iMac G4.

I have a power mac g5 and a external hard drive. What i did was simply move the entire itunes folder over there and now I have 2 of the same library. If that makes since. All my songs can be played from either drive. I wanted it that way, so if something happens then I will always have my songs. I didn't do copy and all that just took the folder dragged it to the external drive and it copied all 45 gigs for me. Hope this helps.

There used to be an icon under file in the top left corner that offered the option to back up to disc or an external drive. Simple question I know for many of you out there but I could do with some advice as I have never done this before. I would like to buy a new external hard drive to store my music and photos on. I will get one with firewire and usb2 connectivity.Could someone walk me through the steps needed to format and prepare a hard drive for use with my Macbook (if it is not already Mac formatted). Will any brand of hard drive work with Mac or are some better than others?

When I bought the new (used) iMac, I also bought an external hard drive for backups. It worked fine, but my husband stole it.

Time machine did the first backup today, and it should have taken 9 hours like it did on the previous first time full back up. Instead, it took 30 minutes. That can't be right. The Disk Utility screen has instructions right on it.
Just read them and follow the directions.
Readers can help if you get stuck.

You click on your drive in the left column, top item.
The next screen spells out how to do a ( Repair Disk ).
You have a Macintosh. It will not cut your hand off.

Buy yourself a portable hard drive from WD or the like. It should have a capacity at least twice that of your machine hard drive. Then follow the instructions that come with it; it is quite straightforward.
I have a similar machine to you by the sound of it. After the initial back up, it is just a matter of topping up every couple of months or so, plus whenever you do to back up any major upgrade.
A portable one is good because you can store it with relatives when not in use which gives protection in the case of fire or theft.
I use two backups. One, an external HD permanently connected for my Time Machine and the second, a portable for the reasons I gave.

Need to transfer home movies from iPhone to external hard drive.

Need to transfer home movies from iPhone to external hard drive. The movies were created with Flip Video, not iPhone. I can see and watch them via iTunes but have not figured out how to move them from iPhone to hard drive. iPhone is broken (screen) and locked, but is still connecting to iTunes. I have backed up all photos/videos created with the iPhone, just need to figure out how to get these last videos off the phone. They are very important. I am working off a Windows XP machine. No, the camera wizard will not work for this as these videos are not stored in that area of the phone.

This is what I have done so far and stuck again.
I opened Image capture plugged in IPhone. Device brought up camera roll pics only.
I was able to send them to the external hard drive. Now they have green checks marks. I cannot seem to remove them. Don't want to delete them yet to put into folder for having prints made..
Devices showed IPhone but would only show camera roll I have two other folders and cannot seem to go to them to show up on the device one is Photo library has 300+ pics and
last import folder. I would like to take the 300 also from the Photo library and also copy them or move them to the external hard drive.
What step am i missing , please help.
