How to back up iphoto

I need help. I just downloaded the latest version of iPhoto '11. When I click on the iPhoto icon none of my pictures are there. Did I need to back them up. Where are my photos from the previous iPhoto? I don't have a hard drive so what do I do?

First off, you always need a back up of important data on your computer. Never upgrade anything without first making a back up.
Go to your Pictures Folder. Is there an iPhoto Library there?
What do you see when you launch iPhoto?

  • How to back up iPhoto Library to an external source?

I am using OS X Mavericks with iPhoto v9.5.1. This morning iPhoto tells me my photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable. Stupidly I have not backed it up.  I am reluctant to try making a repair for fear of losing my photos. So, how can I back it up to an external source (iCloud/external drive), before attempting a repair, when I can't seem to find a folder marked iPhoto Library on hard drive because I can't get past the message which seems only to permit 'Quit'.  Thank you.

    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

Wen doing the following User>Pictures I try to drag iphoto library onto my desktop Seagate drive icon.  Nothing happens.  The files do not copy onto the external drive.

It should not be a problem. How is the drive formatted?
Select the Drive in Finder, then Get Info (cmd-i).
You'll see the format in the General section:

  • How to back up iphoto when iphotolibrary is on an external hard drive

I have a large photolibrary which I store and access iphoto from an external hard drive.  How can I back up that library?

Make sure that the drive that is storing your iPhoto library is fomatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Open Time Machine Preferences and then click Options
A list of items that are currently excluded from backups will appear
If your drive with the iPhoto library appears in this list, click it to highlight it, then click the - (minus) button to remove it from the excluded list.....so that it will be backed up on the next pass
    In other words.....
If your drive holding the library is formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)......AND....the drive does not appear in the list of excluded items.....then it is being backed up with your Mac.
Check to find your drive under Devices when you open Time Machine

  • Would like to know how to back up iphoto library to external harddrive

I know this question has been asked and very well answered, but I could not find it in the pop up discussions.  I have copied my library to an external hard drive by dragging and dropping the events into folders.  This works, however is time consuming and all the photos, I think are out of order.  I would like to use the "export library" link in iphoto, but when i do it say something about can't create volumes??  Sorry if this is not as clear as it could be, but I don't think I am the first with this problem.  Links to previous solutions would be great!  I do use time machine as a back up to an external hard drive, but would like to back up the library to a USB also, which I can then put somewhere else.
I have a Mac Mini  10.6.8. and a sweet new bluetooth keyboard!

Copy the iPhoto library intact to the EHD  --  or use a incremental program so you can update it without recopying everything - I use Carbon Copy cloner - Superduper is another good one - there are others

  • HT4847 how to back up iphoto pics on icloud

Are my iphoto pictures from MacBook Pro stored and backed-up on iCloud? What do I need to do?

No.  icloud does not back up computers, only iOS devices.
Hopefully, you perform Time Machine backups - they will include the photos, if the drive that your iphoto database is on is included in a TM backup.
If you want to sync photos from your mac to other devices then you must use photo stream.

  • How to back up iPhoto 4 and preserve keywords?

    Hello,
I would like to back up my iPhoto library, being sure to preserve my Albums, Keywords, Ratings, etc. - that is, I'd want my backup to include EVERYTHING I'd need to restore iPhoto in the event that my present version developed a problem.
Can I just burn a copy of my "iPhoto Library" folder to a DVD (using Toast), or might there be some files elsewhere on my hard drive that I'd need? I have searched this discussion, but I have been unable to learn where the Keywords are stored for version 4. I'm assuming it won't make any difference to the backup process that I have used the shareware, Keyword Assistant, to assign most of my keywords.
Somehow (perhaps during an OS update?), I ended up with the Help files for iPhoto version 5, rather than the correct Help for my version 4.0.3. The v.5 Help files refer to 'Exporting' the iPhoto Library first, then copying that export file to another disc for back up - is this what I should do for version 4?
    Thank you,
    -GW

    Peter,
Thanks for your most helpful reply.
I now understand that backing up the entire iPhoto Library Folder will preserve my keywords, so that answers my first question. Thankfully, my present iPhoto folder is about 3GB, and will still fit on a single DVD.
I also understand that burning an album from within iPhoto produces a backup that can then be viewed by iPhoto and, presumably, the photo's could easily be reimported into iPhoto. But I wonder if the keywords would go along for the ride?
That is, if I used iPhoto's Burn feature to burn an album to a CD, then erased the Mac's hard drive, and reinstalled iPhoto, would the keywords I assigned before burning the CD be visible when imported into the freshly installed iPhoto Library?
Here is why the answer may have a practical application. If I made a backup DVD of my entire iPhoto Library Folder, then created a Smart Album defined as all photos created after that date, it would simplify my backup strategy, because then only the Smart Album would have to be burned to keep my backup current.
If my hard drive failed, I could copy the iPhoto Folder from the backup DVD to the new hard drive, then import my most recent copy of the Smart Album. If, however, any Keywords I might have assigned to the newer photos in the Smart Album would be lost, then this strategy would not be practical to me.
    Thanks,
    -GW

How to back up iPhoto library that is stored on an external disk drive

Drag-copy it to a different external drive formatted as Mac OS Extended, or use Time Machine, choosing to remove that drive from the list of items excluded from the backup, or use a program such as the Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper to clone the drive containing it.

  • I just downloaded Yosemite and all my iPhotos have disappeared! I tried importing them from the photo library but it said there wasn't enough space on my hard drive which is rubbish, because they were there before. How do I get them back to iPhoto?

I just downloaded Yosemite and all my iPhotos have disappeared! I tried importing them from the photo library but it said there wasn't enough space on my hard drive which is rubbish, because they were there before. How do I get them back to iPhoto?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • I really do not like the new Photos app.  My iPhoto app is disabled in Finder.  How can I go back to iPhoto?

My system just updated to OS X 10.10.3 and now Photos has replaced iPhoto.  My iPhoto has been disabled in Finder.  I really DO NOT like Photos.  Photos are no longer organized into "Events" and my Events labels are gone.  I also am not able to share photos via e-mail.  I tried to update iPhoto through the App Store, but got the message that it is not available in the US.  Then I got a message that said it was temporarily not available.  How can I get iPhoto back?

now Photos has replaced iPhoto.  My iPhoto has been disabled in Finder.
No, Photos did not replace iPhoto. It did not disable iPhoto. You updated to 10.10.3 before updating iPhoto to version that was compatible with Yosemite. That is why your older version is disabled.

  • How can you take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in.

As the title says I need help on how to take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in. Right now when I want to move a picture from one event to another I drag it to my desktop then delete it from iPhoto then I drag it back into iPhoto and put where I want it.An example would be taking a photo from the Christmas event and add it to a specific person event.  Can I do that within the events section without all the dragging. Also is there anyway I can remove duplicates from iPhoto without going through each and every file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apple doesn't make it easy to do what you want.  However, here's how I do it.
Select the photo you want to move and create a new Event for it via the Event ➙ Create Event menu option.
In the Event mode select the new Event with the one picture and drag it onto the Event you want to move the photo to.

I deleted a photos from iphoto, later I found them in imoive, how do I move the photos back to iphoto?

    Hi Canadian Beaver Tail!
You may want to try restoring the photo in iPhoto, using the instructions suggested in the following article:
iPhoto '11: Delete or restore a photo
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2398
    To restore a deleted photo:
If you haven’t yet emptied the iPhoto Trash, do the following:
Select Trash in the Source list.
Select the photo you want to restore.
Choose Photos > “Restore to Photo Library.”You can also drag the item out of the Trash into an empty part of the Source list.
If you use Time Machine to back up your computer, you can recover a photo, an Event, a folder, an album, a project (such as a book, card, or calendar), or a slideshow even if you deleted it from the library and emptied it from the Trash. To restore photos, quit iPhoto, open the folder containing your iPhoto library, and then open Time Machine. To open Time Machine, click its icon in the Dock, or click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar and choose Enter Time Machine. For more information on using Time Machine, see the topics in Help Center. In the Finder, choose Help > Help Center, and then search for “Time Machine.”
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
    Cheers,
    Braden

  • How do I remove Aperture trial and go back to iPhoto (be kind, I'm new).

How do I remove the Aperture trial and go back to iPhoto.  For my usage (just iPhone pics/movies) iPhoto is okay for me, but now I cannot figure out how to remove Aperture, when I drag to Trash I get a warning that Aperture is a system file.
Please help, but also, please go slow if you can help, I am new to my Mac.

Should be pretty easy as follows:
1 - Make sure you have copies of any pictures you want that are inside Aperture somewhere on your computer.
2 - Quit Aperture > Remove any Aperture icon from dock > drag the Aperture program (lens icon) from Applications folder to the Trash > proceed through any warning dialog (including entering password as required) to complete the process.
Note - new security features in OS X Lion may present those warning dialogs to prevent accidental deletion of Apple programs.
3 - Hold down the 'Option' key and use the 'Go' menu in menu bar and select the 'Library' option.
4 - In the Library folder, open the 'Application Support' folder and delete any Aperture folder found.
5 - While still in the Library folder, open the 'Preferences' folder and delete both the 'com.apple.Aperture.plist' and 'com.apple.Aperture.plist.lockfile' file.
6 - While still in the Library folder, open the 'Caches' folder and delete the 'com.apple.Aperture' folder.
7 - Go the your 'Pictures' folder and drag the 'Aperture Library' (may be named Aperture Trial Library or similar) to the Trash to delete it as well.
8 - Empty the Finder Trash to remove Aperture.
Note - there are some files and Aperture folders in the '/Library' folder (which is in the root of your system drive), but you don't really need to remove those. Since you are a beginner, it is probably better not to for now.
    That should do it.
Additional edit: There are two Library folders I am referring to. The first is the one in your user account 'Home' folder which is the one you are going to by using the 'Go' menu. This is the one you are deleting files from in the steps listed. The second Library folder is the one in the root of your system drive and is not typically a location for beginners to work with (thus the final note above). Hope that is clear enough.
Message was edited by: CorkyO2 to add clarity concerning the 'Library' folder.

  • I my harddrive with my photo library went bad, but I have the photos on my ipad, ipod and iphone.  How to I get those photos back into iphoto on my macbook?

The external drive with my photo library went bad, but I have the photos on my ipad, ipod and iphone.  How to I get those photos back into iphoto on my macbook?

Are the photos you want to send back to your mac on your iPad, iPod, iPhone saved to the camera roll? If you have photos in other albums (not camera roll) share them to the camera roll.
Then connect your device via USB and lauch iPhoto. You will see your device as a camera in iPhoto.  Import those photos like you would import from a camera.

  • Help. if i edit a photo in photoshop how do get it back into iphoto?

When i drag a photo out of iphoto and into photoshop how do i save it back into iphoto. when I save it back it doesn't show up in my library as the saved version. any ideas

To expand on Terence's post a bit, if you use PS as your editor of choice in iPhoto via iPhoto's preferences and edit a file it may be changed to a psd file during the Save process. You'll be presented with the navigation save window in PS. If that occurs you can take one of two routes:
1 - navigate to the Desktop and save the psd file as a new file and then import it into iPhoto.
2 - cancel the save, to to the Layers pane and flatten the image. Then save as a jpg. You'll get the smaller save window where you select the quality of the jpg and the type of format, Baseline, Baseline Optimized or Progressive) You'll want to choose Baseline. If you select this type of save the edited version will be saved in the Modified folder and the thumbnail will be updated as it should
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
