How to back up my imovie project, clips are too large

I am using iMovie HD 5.02, and I have a video clip imported as one clip only. The problem is the clip is 9gb and obviously that cannot be saved as archive on normal dvd.
How can I split this into smaller clips so that I can save it on two dvd's as archive file.
I have tried archive from within the program and it is too large of a file.
Thanks

Hi Jeff,
the cat gave you all hints needed, just to add my c€nts:
tape is better then dvd-rs! I mentioned my experiment here often: place a dvd-r in bright sunlight for ~5min - all data gone, nirvana, wooshaway.... mini-DV is much more robust compared to that.
to backup data larger then 4.4GB you should think of socalled "data spanning", tools as Toast7 are able to do so, it will chop bigger files into smaller parts, will ask for more dvd-rs and is able to recover such files back into one single one...
best practice is indeed a second drive, which offers as a sideeffect best convenience => instant access to data from within iM....

  • How to backup an iMovie project that is too large for the dvd?

This may be obvious, and it was probably answered elsewhere, but I'm trying to clean off my hard drive by saving my iMovie projects to two sets of dvds (one for home and one set for safekeeping at work). When saving one project as an archive, it just says this project is too large for a disc. Is it possible to stuff it as a .sitx file and then save that onto dvd? Is there a better solution than an external hard drive (which I've had a couple of fail on me).

DVD's can only hold about 4.7 GB's of DV Stream format (the format used by iMovie).
DV Stream is 13 GB's per hour of recording so it would take 3 DVD's to "store" your data for a one hour capture.
"Export" (back to tape) or use iDVD to "burn" an MPEG-2 version of your file.
Only the "tape" version would not require some type of conversion on import.

  • How do I import an imovie project from an external drive to imovie?

My hard drive on Macbook Pro 2009 recently crashed. Luckily I backed up my imovie projects on an external. I upgraded with new hard drive and installed snow leopard. I transferred this particular imovie project from external to the 'movies' folder on the internal drive. When I launch imovie to find this particular imovie project all I see are various folders associated with this particular project not the imovie project icon (the icon where I double click and begin editing). If I try to import directly from external drive the project icons are grayed out.
Furthermore if I try to import any video (whether from external or internal drive) on imovie it says:
This file could not be moved:
(Insufficient access privileges for operation )
All movie files play on quicktime when I test them, so I'm unsure as to why I don't have access privileges.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any replies to this one? Anyone????

  • How can I save my iMovie Project to a DVD or Flash Drive which can be played on a PC and any DVD player

I have an iMac, purchased in January 2011. How can I save an iMovie project to a DVD or Flash Drive which can be played on a PC or any DVD player

I will give you a basic primer, not going to get to in depth, as far as parameters, size of project, or the storage size of your usb flash drive, etc.
    1. you have your finished iMovie project. Under iMovie>Share menu. Choose export using quicktime.
    2. make Movie self contained. This way your Mov, Mvi, etc files will be part of the movie and it can play without having to reference the events, because it is actually there.
    3. so, now on your desktop  ( or any where else set up quicktime to save your file) you will see a quicktime file.
Drag & Drop that file on to the icon of your USB Flash Drive, etc.
    4. Details that I omitted because I admit I am not well versed. Most Likely that quicktime file is larger than your USB Flash Drive. You have to use one of quicktime compression work flows, also if you open the just created quicktime file. It will open quicktime player and under the File>Export you have to options. I have a Movie that was 42GB 1080P, I exported it as a 720P, so it would still be playable on a large screen and now the new file was less than 2.5GB.
    5. Oh, no i just realized that the file should be playable on a PC, as long as the PC has quicktime for windows installled and you left that USB formated at MS DOS as it came originally, or a PC will not recognize it. Will it open up on your Blu-Ray Player that has a USB port, not sure. Since there is no menu. but, perhaps just pushing play will start movie.
Hope this is of some help.

  • How do I add an iMovie project to the iPad?

How do I add an iMovie project to the iPad? I have added the project to the pane in iTunes but the iPad has no way to import. I am using iOS 8.0.2. Also, when I open iMovie in the iPad, I see one project and video available but it is not shown in iTunes. What the heck is going on?
    Thanks.

First thing I'd try is dropping the Quality level down to Medium or maybe half-way between High and Medium.

    Hey,
If you don't mind a third-party software, you can try the DVD Creator to burn any kind of videos to DVD with the ability to play on DVD player~~The process is really easy and you can DIY the DVD menu if you like. (offer the guide to you!)

    Hi
If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
    • iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
    • DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
    • Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
    • Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD
    Burn http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html
only You can buy from Apple is
    • FinalCut Pro-X which also can burn to DVD but without any nice themes.
    AppleMan1958
You can also buy Compressor from Apple for $50 US. It will also create DVD and BluRay but without the nice themes.

  • How do you merge 2 iMovie projects?

How do you merge 2 iMovie projects together? I have a 2 yr old iMac with iMovie 2011. Thank-you.

That's an easy solution. However you did not consider the harmful effects of the additional compression. Please consider that the "raw" video is already compressed before it leaves the camera. Then again as it's exported from iMovie the first time. After merging the projects (with your technique) it get compressed a third time. And perhaps a fourth time if the movie is burned onto a DVD.
I'm very familiar with the loss of image and sound quality due to excessive compression, because I produced 43 separate makeup application tutorials for a manufacturer's website. Everything was fine until they decided that they also wanted me to combine all of them onto a DVD. My video was shot at high-def so that wasn't an issue. The issue was how to combine all 43 videos without a substancial loss of image quality?
I tried the obvious method (proposed by elikness) and found that my text graphics (still photos) suffered the worst - literally jagged black text that looked almost blurry. So I replaced all my graphic panels and burned the DVD. My client was satisfied. I was not. God only knows what the 90-minute (combined) DVD will look like after they've paid somebody to make 10,000 copies.
    thank you - robert

    Um ... some useful data?
OS/CPU/RAM/GPU/vRAM ... version of PrPro ... and other programs or plugi-ins/3rd-party apps involved ... footage type/codec/wrapper ... such things would be very useful.

I am trying to use my IPAD to video students in my conducting class, then email them the video for self evaluation.  However, many of the clips are too long to send.  Is there a way I can compress the clips and still send them via email so they can open and them using Quicken?
    Muzakmn

It depends on the clips' content, their current format, and how much you would need to compress them, but in most cases and with most email systems, it's difficult to impossible to compress a clip enough to be able to get it through the attachment size limits of most email providers and still have the video be comprehensible. You'll probably need to find a web site or other method where you could post the videos for download by the students.
You can try compression and trimming, though, and see if you can get the video small enough to email. An attachment often has to be 3MB or less to go through, though it depends entirely on the email systems on both ends. If you look to the right under "more like this" you'll find similar threads on the subject.
