How to backup files automatically using Tiger?

I recently came across this post: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070313192221659
...in which the poster states, in March 2007, that he/she "uses Apple's Backup program." Given the timeframe, I assume the poster was running Tiger or an earlier version of OS X, pre-Time Machine. I've been snooping around on my Tiger Mac, having recently acquired an external hard drive for the purpose of backing up my files, but haven't found anything at all that resembles a built-in backup program. Am I missing something? If this exists, where is it and what is it called?
Please don't tell me to upgrade to Snow Leopard. I plan to, but not for at least another 6 months.
Also, FYI, Photo Booth is mysteriously missing from my computer (and has been from the outset). Maybe this backup thing never made it onto my installation disk either.
As for the post from 2007, the author was anonymous so I doubt I'd get a response even if I tried replying now.
Thanks to anyone who can provide insight.

    RE: How to backup files from other user logged in as administrator AND/OR how to repair drive with "Invalid catalog PEOF"
    Hello,
    My MacBook Pro computer’s hard drive is not booting.
    I booted with the base operating system and ran Disk utilities and I got the following messages:
        Invalid catalog PEOF
        The volume could not be verified completely.
        This disk needs to be repaired.
        Disk utility can’t repair this disk. Backup as many files as possible, reformat the disk,
        and restore your backed-up files.
    The problem is that I have a couple of USERS set up on this computer, and it won’t let me backup the files of the second user.  The folders are locked and I can’t access them, even though I am logged in as the administrator.
    I made a boot disk on my other computer ( a MacPro Early 2008 ) desktop computer with the DiskWarrior 4.4 updater,
    but it won’t boot on my MacBook Pro.
    How can I backup these user files so that I can copy them back once I fix the drive?
    or better yet,  How can I repair the Invalid catalog PEOF on this drive?
    Thank you in advance for your time!

    Try using Disk Utility/Restore to copy the backup to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition which will erase all data.
    Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

  • How to backup files from old time machine to new time machine

    I have been using an external drive as my Time Machine for about a year. I just got a Time Capsule. Can I set up Time Machine to move all the backups from my old drive to my new Time Capsule? I assume it's not as simple as dragging the files from my old drive to the Time Capsule drive.
    I have clicked Change Disk... in the Time Machine preferences to change my backup drive to the Time Capsule. However, I don't think that's going to move my old backup files to the Time Capsule.

I'll keep the backup files on my old time machine disk for a few weeks--in hopes a solution is found. After that, I'll erase the old time machine files to free up the disk space.
    You might have been able to transfer the old Time Capsule contents to the new one by connecting the old Time Capsule to your computer with an Ethernet cable. If this gave you visibility of the disks of both Time Capsules, then you could use your computer to transfer the "sparsebundle" file(s) from the old to the new.
    Now that you've started using your new Time Capsule, if you try once again to transfer those files, you'll lose any interim Time Machine backups, although that may not be a problem.

  • How to remove file attachments using the SDK

    I am looking for ways to programmatically remove file attachments from work items.  If I recall correctly, the system only keeps the file for as long as the relationship exists, so that, in theory, the file is deleted from the database a soon as the
    relationship is removed.
    I found this
    Using the SDK to Create and Edit Objects and Relationships Using Type Projections
    Is this the only way or are the other, simpler ways for deleting relationships and/or file attachments?
    Is this something I could do with the Orchestrator Remove Relationship activity?
    A little background on this question: I have multiple different teams with varying data retention requirements for Service Requests.  My longest requirement is 3 years (audit) while most teams only require 90 days.  I was looking to add in some
    jobs for some more aggressive file attachment grooming to keep the database smaller.
    Thanks.

    The relationship is defined as a membership/containment relationship. So, yes, if you delete the relationship, the file attachment (and the associated blob) are deleted as well.
    Based on the background you described, I'm assuming you identify a bunch of work orders whose files you want to delete if they're older than X. So, for instance "Work Items with Y team; delete file attachments older than 90 days", "Work Items
    with Q team; delete file attachments older than 3 years". Is that right?
    If so, you don't necessarily need to delete relationships specifically...you can simply delete the file attachment objects which will delete the relationship, the file attachment object, and the associated blob (the file itself in the database).
    Using the SDK, you will not need type projections for this. You'll only need the work item object(s) (an incident or service request or whatever), the GetRelatedObjects<>() method, and an IncrementalDiscoveryData object.
    So, after you get all of the appropriate work items, you can use the following snippet to delete their file attachments if the attachments meet your age requirements
    //Connect to the management group
    String strMySCSMServer = "<my mgmt server>";
    emg = new EnterpriseManagementGroup(strMySCSMServer);
    IncrementalDiscoveryData idd = new IncrementalDiscoveryData();
    ManagementPackRelationship relWorkItemHasFileAttachment = emg.EntityTypes.GetRelationshipClass(new Guid("AA8C26DC-3A12-5F88-D9C7-753E5A8A55B4")); //System.WorkItemHasFileAttachment
    //Get the work item's related file attachments using it's Id
    Guid myWorkItemGuid = new Guid("<some work item guid>");
    IList<EnterpriseManagementObject> lstFileAttachments = emg.EntityObjects.GetRelatedObjects<EnterpriseManagementObject>(myWorkItemGuid, relWorkItemHasFileAttachment, TraversalDepth.OneLevel, ObjectQueryOptions.Default);
    //Loop through each file attachment
    foreach (EnterpriseManagementObject emoFile in lstFileAttachments)
    //Determine its age
    DateTime AddedDate = (DateTime)emoFile[null, "AddedDate"].Value;
    TimeSpan FileAttachmentAge = AddedDate.Subtract(DateTime.Now);
    //Prep the file attachment for deletion if it's old enough, in this example, older than 90 days
    if (FileAttachmentAge.Days > 90)
    idd.Remove(emoFile);
    //Submit the deletions to the database.
    idd.Commit(emg);

  • How to backup files to ensure future access and use using a different mac

    I recently attempted access backed up data on my LaCie drive from a different Mac notebook. I was blocked. I didn't write down the message, but it essentially advised that the data was locked and I wasn't allowed access. I wasn't given a chance to enter any kind of system password to bypass the lock.
    Here is my problem: I recently spilled some wine into my keyboard. Since then, the system has slowed to a crawl and occasionally weird things begin to happen, regardless of which software I am using [eg iPhoto, Quickbooks, idvd, Photoshop, email, and even dashboard]. I know I am very lucky to have any access to my files at all. While I do, I need to back everything up so that I can have access to my files later on. I plan to have my Mac serviced this week. I don't know if it needs to be replaced, or whether it can be repaired.
    *+If it can't be repaired, how do I back up my files to ensure future access and use using a different mac?+*

    I'll check the example you linked. I appreciate you responding.
    I was not trying to boot another system at all. Actually, I was working on a newer mac laptop. I attempted to load a dvd I had created in my idvd on the other mac from the LaCie. I was using a mac because I knew it had all the iLife software I needed in order to work with my idvd components. Honestly though, I don't know if the mac I was using is intel based. I hadn't considered it. Does Apple sell macbooks with intel? No matter.
    So, let's see -- I was using the other powerbook to read the LaCie via firewire -- and yes, the LaCie has its own power supply.
    If I remember correctly, the denial I received [when attempting to load the idvd file] knew that I had created it. I got the feeling that it wasn't allowing me into the file for security reasons. I just don't remember setting security. Incidentally, I just checked and I do not have a master password set nor do I have FileVault protection turned on.
    I'll check that link you sent. Thx again, M~

  • How to spilt files when using DATA UNLOAD (External Table, 10g)?

    Hi,
    I am runnin 10gR2 and need to export partitions by using data_pump driver
    via dmp files (External Tables).
    Now as requierment the created files can not exceed 2GB mark.
    Some of partitions are larger than that.
    How could I split the partition so I could be able to create files smaller than 2GB? Is there any parameter I am not aware of or do I need to do SELECT COUNT(*) FROM source_table PARTITION(partiton_01);
    and than to work with ROWNUM?
    This example working fine for all partitions samller than 2GB:
    CREATE TABLE partiton_01_tbl
    2 ORGANIZATION EXTERNAL
    3 (
    4 TYPE ORACLE_DATAPUMP
    5 DEFAULT DIRECTORY def_dir1
    6 LOCATION ('inv_xt1.dmp')
    7 )
    8 PARALLEL 3
    9 AS SELECT * FROM source_table PARTITION(partiton_01);

    You could specify multiple destination files in the LOCATION parameter (the number of files should match the degree of parallelism specified). I am not aware of an option that would allow the external table to automatically add new data files as the partition size increased, so you'd likely have to do some sort computation about the expected size of the dump file in order to figure out how many files to create.

  • How to backup files onto external hard drive if my MacBook's graphics card is broken?

    Hello,
    I have a 15" 2012 Macbook pro with 2gb of ram, i7 processor, and a 250 gb Hard drive. In the middle of using my computer, the screen went black. Upon rebooting the computer, I noticed gray and white horizontal lines running across the screen, but I was still able to see the apple logo and loading indicator in the background. As soon as the login screen appeared, the screen went black again.
    Genius Bar Diagnosis:
    A few days later I took my computer to the apple store to have them diagnose the computer to determine if the hard drive was corrupt or if it was just a display issue. They found that the hard drive was still functioning properly, so no information was lost. The problem was that the graphics card needed to be replaced. So they offered to ship my laptop to an Apple repair facility in Houston, Texas (nearest one to me) and replace the graphics card, as well as any other parts that seemed to be damaged, for a flat rate of about $315. They recommended that I back up my hard drive just in case they found an issue with it (despite nothing showing up in the diagnosis at the genius bar) because the technicians at the repair facility will just swap it out for a new one.
    My dilemma:
    The employee at the genius bar gave me a list of Apple Authorized Service Providers that could help transfer the data from my macbook's hard drive to an external hard drive. I got a quote from them for $150, plus I would have to pay for a new external hard drive because my other one is full. In an effort to save money, I want to see if there is a cheaper way for me to backup the hard drive by myself. I have a pc laptop that still works fine, so I have been using that since my MacBook Pro died on me. Is there any way I could use that other computer to somehow backup my macbook's hard drive? Or would I need another mac to do the transfer? I have looked into buying a hard drive sled, but I don't know how those work, and I may not have all of the right equipment for it. If that is something I have the right tools for, and it's cheaper after buying all the accessories, then I would much rather go that route than taking it in to get serviced at an AASP store. Please help!
    I'll give good ratings to those who give me useful advice.
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • How to convert file format using bfile datatype

    <pre>
    Hi all,
    Assume, i has a table BFILE_IMAGE and it table structure is similar like:
    SQL> desc bfile_image;
    Name Null? Type
    IMAGE_ID NUMBER
    FILE_NAME VARCHAR2(30)
    IMAGE BINARY FILE LOB
    SQL>
    Is that impossible if we can use process() function with bfile datatype? similar like:
    ordsys.ordimage.process(image,'fileFormat=JPEG contentFormat=24BITRGB');
    The line above is work with blob datatype but doesn't with bfile datatype. Can you please give me some idea how to deal with it.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    a BFILE is content stored outside the Oracle database. It is a read-only object.
    process() is an in-place modification of the image. This is only possible with BLOB stored content.
    If you are using BFILE you could use the processCopy() method to create a new copy of the BFILE stored image that has been processed according to your command.
