How to backup files onto external hard drive if my MacBook's graphics card is broken?

Hello,
I have a 15" 2012 Macbook pro with 2gb of ram, i7 processor, and a 250 gb Hard drive. In the middle of using my computer, the screen went black. Upon rebooting the computer, I noticed gray and white horizontal lines running across the screen, but I was still able to see the apple logo and loading indicator in the background. As soon as the login screen appeared, the screen went black again.
Genius Bar Diagnosis:
A few days later I took my computer to the apple store to have them diagnose the computer to determine if the hard drive was corrupt or if it was just a display issue. They found that the hard drive was still functioning properly, so no information was lost. The problem was that the graphics card needed to be replaced. So they offered to ship my laptop to an Apple repair facility in Houston, Texas (nearest one to me) and replace the graphics card, as well as any other parts that seemed to be damaged, for a flat rate of about $315. They recommended that I back up my hard drive just in case they found an issue with it (despite nothing showing up in the diagnosis at the genius bar) because the technicians at the repair facility will just swap it out for a new one.
My dilemma:
The employee at the genius bar gave me a list of Apple Authorized Service Providers that could help transfer the data from my macbook's hard drive to an external hard drive. I got a quote from them for $150, plus I would have to pay for a new external hard drive because my other one is full. In an effort to save money, I want to see if there is a cheaper way for me to backup the hard drive by myself. I have a pc laptop that still works fine, so I have been using that since my MacBook Pro died on me. Is there any way I could use that other computer to somehow backup my macbook's hard drive? Or would I need another mac to do the transfer? I have looked into buying a hard drive sled, but I don't know how those work, and I may not have all of the right equipment for it. If that is something I have the right tools for, and it's cheaper after buying all the accessories, then I would much rather go that route than taking it in to get serviced at an AASP store. Please help!
I'll give good ratings to those who give me useful advice.
Thanks,
Matt

Hello mafrerichs and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
Simplest way is to use Target Disk mode:
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode - Apple Support
and hook to another Mac and use CCC or SuperDuper and clone your HD to another drive.
You could also pull the drive out of your MBP and use an external USB case or SATA - USB dongle to hook it to another Mac.

That's a little confusing?

  • How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive?

How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive and keep the new iTunes library on the External Hard Drive. I have all the media and playlist and .xml .itl files, just want the iTunes to recognise the content.
I backedup my iTunes content by dragging to External Hard Drive. Formatted and reinstalled OS. My iTunes content is so large, that I wish for the Library and content to remain on the External Hard Drive. I have all the music files and playlists, I just cannot get the iTunes application to display all the content. Hoping to Not have to drag and drop all the content to be recopied into new iTunes organised files.
Troubleshooting this by researching other conversations on the web, I have come stuck for a solution. One Troubleshoot told me to hold down the Command key and then lauch iTunes and a dialogue box will appear to Choose a new library, however when I try this, no Dialogue box appear to give me the option!?

It sometimes has that funny switch symbol on it too.

  • Removing backup files from external hard drive

Hi, I hope you can help me here. My macbook (the silver 2010 model) has become horrendously slow so I wanted to move all of my photos and music to my external drive. Come to plug it in I found out that I only had 45GB left on it and located an old system backup that's probably taking up a loooot of space. I tried to delete it but I guess that just gets rid of the image but not the actual files. Tried plugging it into my PC at work but the drive (WD MyPassport) is formatted for Mac and so the PC won't recognise it. Is there any way to erase these files or partition the disk without completely wiping the whole disk, which seems like my only option at the moment? Copying the files back to my laptop is not an option unfortunately.

But on my other external hard drives, the files i send to trash, end up in the trash and do not get deleted. I feel like there is something wrong with permissions or some hidden files i don't know about on that specific external drive.

  • Backup files on external hard drive

I use a 500GB external hard drive, mostly for storing my itunes and iphoto library. My time machine also uses this external drive. When trying to download an itunes movie file yesterday, I noticed that my external drive only had less than 4GB of space remaining on it. On closer inspection of the contents of my hard drive there are loads of what appear to be folders containing "back-ups" of the contents of my iMac, held in a folder entitled "Backups.backupdb".
    For example: Backups.backupdb>AlecHughes's iMac>2008-07-11-082708
There are loads of these folders dating from 2007 to the present day. I assume these folders are linked to time machine, but I'm concerned that they may be taking up a massive amount of space on my external drive - my itunes library is nowhere near big enough to fill 500GB.
My question is, would it be OK to simpley delete some of these "Backups.backupdb" folders - particularly the very old ones - to free up some space on my hard drive and, if so can I just do this from finder?

It's not a good idea to share a volume between Time Machine backups and other files. By design Time Machine will eventually consume all the space on the volume where it writes its files. Two alternatives are (1) create a disk image in the volume to use for storing other files and (2) partitioning the disk into a Time Machine volume and a volume for the other files.

  • How to get files from external hard drive on new user on iMac?

My wife has an iMac, and I want to transfer my time machine info from my external hard drive that it ultimately from my laptop...onto a new user name on her iMac for myself. How do I do this? Because every time I connect my external hard drive, it just wants to save the content from her iMac....and will this erase her user stuff if I do this? Thanks.

Connect the extermal drive to her iMac and run the program called Migration Assistant. (It is in the Utilities folder.) This program will create an account on her iMac and copy your user folder to the new account. It will not erase anything (unless you tell it to.) Assuming your external drive is large enough you can also back up her account onto it. One drive can be used to back up multiple accounts. It keeps each account separately.

  • How to transfer files to external hard drive

How do I transfer Imovie folders to an external hard drive?

Use Disk Utility to clone the Time Machine backup from the Iomega to the WD. Both drives need to be running and mounted on the Desktop.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the WD drive. Source means the Iomega drive.
Disk Utility will erase the WD drive before starting the cloning operation. If you have data on the WD drive it will be lost.

  • I need help on how to properly use my external hard drive on the macbook pro

Whenever I try to store some files (e.g. images)
The image I've copied and pasted into the external hard drive disappears or gets deleted as well when I delete the original image from the internal hard drive, why is that?
Is it because it was just a copy of the original image that if you delete the original image the copied image in the external hard drive will get deleted as well?
So does that mean I have to put the original image in the drive or will that get lost too?
    Sorry for the multiple questions,
I'm just struggling with my new external hard drive.
Model of the external hard drive: Seagate Backup plus slim portable drive 1 tb

What are you trying to accomplish here?  Time Machine is used for backing up files on a regular basis but you don't have to use it.  You're getting ahead of things.  Have you managed to drag a file from your main drive to the new one successfully?

  • Encrypting files on external hard drive

I am wondering how to encrypt file on external hard drive. Is it best to use the disk image system?
Also, can I make disk images flexible, so that I may keep adding files to it in the future? Ideally there are a few GBs of info I would like to store this way, but will add more later.
    Thanks for any ideas!

I think so, but I haven't used anything else.

Use a sparse image. You can set a large size, but it will only take up the space that you store in the image. You can keep adding until you hit the max size you set or run out of disk space. There are ways to resize the disk image, also.
    Thanks for any ideas!

  • HT201250 How can I migrate a Time Machine backup from an external hard drive to a new TimeCapsuls?

I just got a 2TB Time Capsule.  I want to migrate my time machine backups on an external hard drive to the new Time Capsule.  I have about 430Gb of files to back up; I don't want to wait 7-8 days for the backup, unless I have to.  I am using OS 10.7.5 (forget which cat that is).  I have mounted the TC drive as 10.0.1.1; I tried to drag and drop from old to "data" on TC, but I get the error "The volume is the wrong format for a backup."  Any ideas how I can move my old files to the new, and bypass creating a brand new backup file?
    Thanks.

Rather than do that, which means starting over from scratch, losing all your edits, organisation and so on, why not simply use iPhoto Library Manager to revert the Library to the older version? Easier, less destructive.
The instructions on that are here
If you really want to start over: you can access the Originals folder simply by going to your Pictures Folder and finding the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.

  • How can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open?

how can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open? I just wan't to make a backup to my pictures not my entire computer so how does Time Machine work on that?

you could also clone the drive or volume, or just some of the user folders. look for carbon copy cloner, then enable the "use checksum to insure file integrity."
you can have multiple iPhoto Library catalogues in different locations.
Continue to use TimeMachine and make sure it has 350% or more capacity than your system and data.

  • How can I restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. Using Migrat

I would like to restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. When I tried using Migration Assistant it only gives me my internal hard drive as an option to restore to. The internal hard drive on my macbook isnt large enough to store the files.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive

how do I copy files onto a hard drive (device) from Mac 2 7 pc. I'm able to transfer files from device but cannot transfer files to device. Anyone had same problem or can help solve this problem? Help pls

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
When you try to copy data to the external drive, what happens? If you don't see any error, the external drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write in it.
To be able to write on this external drive, you have to use an app like Paragon NTFS. Another solution would be to format the external drive in FAT32 or exFAT with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Make sure you copied all the files of the external disk to the internal disk before doing it
