How To Backup Home Dir?

I am wanting to backup my home dir. What is the easiest and most efficient way of backing up my home dir. without having to purchase software of any sort? I want to be able to easily replace my home dir. if I have to do a format and clean install of any sort of OS X and not run into problems of being locked out of my files.
Thanks

There are numerous backup solutions available:
Backup Utilities for OS X
(In the order of my personal ranking)
1. The Restore option of Disk Utility (only for full backups.)
2. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial $129 - not universal binary)
3. Synchronize! Pro X (Shareware $99)
4. Synk 6 (Shareware - 3 versions: Pro $45, Standard $35, Basic $25)
5. Deja Vu (Shareware $25)
6. LaCie SilverKeeper (Freeware - not universal binary.)
7. Carbon Copy Cloner 3.0 Beta (Freeware.)
8. RSyncX and PSyncX (Freeware - GUIs wrapped around Unix tools.)
9. arRsync (Freeware - GUI wrapper on rsync.)
For a good discussion of backup and restore visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore strategies.
Except for Retrospect you can download the others from www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com.
You will need backup media. The best solution is to purchase an external Firewire drive equal to or larger than the internal drive. You can then clone your entire system using the Restore option of Disk Utility. Alternatively you can save your backups to DVDs.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

  • How to reset Home Dir permissions?

    I've had a few situations lately where I've had to either move files from one user's Home Dir to another's, or delete a user then move its files back after recreating it, or simply fix wonky privs, but I can't seem to find an easy way to do these things.
    Is there any way to automate the inheritance of privs? Like, I want to be able to drop a file into a user's home, and have it become owned by that user. I thought I'd at least be able to reset the owner while logged in as that user, by changing the setting in the Get Info window, but you aren't even given the option to authenticate as an admin...
    Am I missing something easy here?

    In short, there is no easy way to enable propagation of ownership to files that are dropped into a home folder.
    However, I use a bash script on or home folder servers to create/fix permissions on a user's apple home folder. The script will go through all folders in the user's home folder and reset the permissions and ownership to the correct values.
    1. Copy the script below into a file (eg. fixpermissions.sh) using emacs, nano or your favorite editor.
    2. Open a terminal on the machine hosting the home folder.
    3. Change to the top level of your home folder tree.
    Eg. If the home folder is /Users/jweston, change to the /Users folder <pre>cd /Users</pre>
    4. Run the fixpermissions.sh script with the username to fix.
    <pre>./fixpermissions.sh jweston</pre>
    5. Done! Note: If the folder does not exist it will be created. Otherwise, the script will fix permissions on the current contents.
    Here is the script...
    <pre>
    #!/bin/bash
    if [ -d ${1} ]
    then
    #Home Dir exists, reset permissions
    chown -R ${1}.admin ${1}
    chmod -R u=rwX,go= ${1}
    chmod -R go=rX ${1}/Public ${1}/Sites
    chmod go=wX ${1}/Public/Drop\ Box
    chmod go=rX ${1}
    else
    #Home Dir does not exist, create...
    mkdir ${1}
    mkdir ${1}/Desktop
    mkdir ${1}/Documents
    mkdir ${1}/Library
    mkdir ${1}/Movies
    mkdir ${1}/Music
    mkdir ${1}/Pictures
    mkdir ${1}/Public
    mkdir ${1}/Public/Drop\ Box
    mkdir ${1}/Sites
    chown -R ${1}.admin ${1}
    chmod -R u=rwX,go= ${1}
    chmod -R go=rX ${1}/Public ${1}/Sites
    chmod go=wX ${1}/Public/Drop\ Box
    chmod go=rX ${1}

  • How to create Home Dir

    I want to create Home Dir with remote manager and VB script. Here is the architecture OIM will call remote manager which is on other windows machine . On remote manager we will run script which will call other windows machine where we want to create hone dir.
    Here my question is ...Is it necessary to have remote manager in the Domain where we are creating home dir.
    We are having 12 domains so do we need to 12 remote manager

    You can turn anything into a remote manager task. Just need to recreate the same adapter, but use an IT Resource with a remote manager, and add the task as a remote manager task instead. Then when you map the it resource, it will have another variable to map.

    Hi there,  i'm new to the iPHONE community and please can someone tell me how to backup my phone to iCLOUD. How do i connect with wi-fi. Must i buy a wi-fi connetion or what.Thank you kind regards

    Do you have a wi-fi network in your home ? If you do then you should be able to connect your phone to it via Settings > Wi-Fi on your phone - that should show any networks that are available, and tapping on the network that you want to use (and typing in its password if it's password protected) should connect the phone to it. If you don't have a wi-fi network then yes, you will need wifi router in your home, which is connected to the internet (e.g. via your phone line) to be able to back up your phone to iCloud.

  • How to backup only users' relevant files from File History on Windows 8.1?

    Hi,
    I would like to find out how to backup certain user's files from File History on Windows 8.1?
    I'm planning to store the backup files on our server, over a shared network, so that client can retrieve them whenever they need.
    I manage to do one by excluding all the folders from c:\, but it occurs quite silly to me to go select one by one files to exclude them.
    Please advise if there is a better way?

  • How to backup the mails in mountain lion

    Hello i am looking for help, can anyone tell me step by step how to backup and restore mail folders in mail in macbook

    You can use Time Machine as your back up solution and/or any 3rd party back up software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Or, if your Mail folder is not very large you could copy it to a USB thumb drive.
    Your user Mail folder resides in the user Library (~/Library). There are a couple of ways to get to it since it is hidden.
    1. Open Terminal and type chflags nohidden ~/Library    <--- This will unhide the user Library folder and you will see it under your user name within Finder.
    2. Open Finder then press/hold the Option key while you click on Go / Go to Folder. You will see the Library folder under the Home folder in your list of selections. Select Library. Once Library shows up in the Finder window, you can click and drag its icon, in the Title portion of the Finder window, and place it in the Finder Sidebar.
    Once the user Library is available to view, you can copy your Mail folder to a USB thumb drive for back up and restore from the USB thumb drive. If you decide to use Time Machine or a 3rd party software then you can do one of the following to restore the Mail folder depending on the software used.
    1. If Time Machine was used, make sure you have a Finder window opened to your user Library. Enter Time Machine and navigate to the date you want to restore from. You can choose to restore it to its original location or a different location.
    2. If you use a 3rd party software then you would can open Finder / Go / Go to Folder and type in the path to your user Library on the backup. For example /Volumes/MBP CCC Backup/Users/<username>/Library. Copy the Mail folder to where ever you want.
    Hope this helps.

  • Finding "home.dir" server variable in a jsp file?

    Hi
    How I can obtainig server variables (such as server home dir) in a jsp file????

    What are server variables?
    In jsp's you can use the following implicit objects:
    1) request
    2) config
    3) application
    which correspond to the HttpServletRequest, ServletConfig, and ServletContext objects in a servlet. For instance,
    application.getRealPath(...);
    The getRealPath() method of a ServletContext object will get you the full path to the specified file. If you use getRealPath("/"), you'll get the root directory of your application-- in case that is what you are after. You can also try:
    request.getContextPath().
    See here for additional info you can get with those objects:

  • Rescue and Recovery -- How to Backup the Partition

    Hi there, folks.
    I'm trying to create a backup of the default factory image on a partition of my harddrive. I originally ran Windows 7 64 bit Professional. I tried out Windows 8 and just this past weekend returned to Windows 7 with a friend's copy of it. However, Rescue and Recovery doesn't seem to recognize that the partition contains the backup image.
    Mainly, I'm confused because the current version of ThinkVantage and R&R is completely different than the software that, just a month ago, was constantly reminding me of the partition and that it needed to be restored. Any help?
    Does anyone know how to backup JUST a partition? Thank you!

    One work-around that I have used successfully when I had an Acronis image but no R&R image is to do a full restore to factory using the factory recovery media (from Lenovo or home made on the TP) and then restoring only the windows partition from the non-Lenovo image.  This should leave the service partition, the MBR, and track 0 in the Lenovo mystery mode, and let the think button work, and you get your cloned up-to-date OS.
    I should add that in one of my experiments w/multi-booting and fiddling partitions, after using this procedure with Vista on my T400, vista wouldn't boot. It required a bootable vista DVD to run the vista boot repair procedure (twice).  After that, "think" and vista booted as expected.  I don't know of any way to do that with Lenovo install media.  If no MS Vista DVD is available, there are stripped down versions with the repair stuff only floating around the web.  The usual precautions re downloads apply.  There may be manual ways to repair the vista boot stuff that I haven't found yet.
    I can't say with certainty that this will always be necessary.  I may have screwed something up during the two step restore process.
    The magic "think" button is (potentially) pretty useful, but it and the "new improved" vista boot process are a little too fragile, IMNSHO.

  • TS2972 how to reset home sharing

    How do I reset home sharing in itunes, I don't know what computers, I put home sharing on, Most likely I had to reformat the hard drives, So they don't exist. I would like to do is set my account to zero.. thanks

    <pre>
    #!/bin/bash
    if [ -d ${1} ]
    then
    #Home Dir exists, reset permissions
    chown -R ${1}.admin ${1}
    chmod -R u=rwX,go= ${1}
    chmod -R go=rX ${1}/Public ${1}/Sites
    chmod go=wX ${1}/Public/Drop\ Box
    chmod go=rX ${1}
    else
    #Home Dir does not exist, create...
    mkdir ${1}
    mkdir ${1}/Desktop
    mkdir ${1}/Documents
    mkdir ${1}/Library
    mkdir ${1}/Movies
    mkdir ${1}/Music
    mkdir ${1}/Pictures
    mkdir ${1}/Public
    mkdir ${1}/Public/Drop\ Box

    chmod -R u=rwX,go= ${1}
    chmod -R go=rX ${1}/Public ${1}/Sites
    chmod go=wX ${1}/Public/Drop\ Box
    chmod go=rX ${1}

  • NFS home dirs as individual qtree or folder?

    I'm setting up individual user home dirs to be automounted under linux, so NFS (we're using cmode if it matters).  I don't know wether to setup the home dirs as individual qtrees per person (ex: /home_vol/qtree_username), or a single homedire qtree where everyone has a folder (ex: /vol1/home_qtree/username).  I've seen this done both ways, and I don't really know if one's better than the other.  I feel like the per user qtree is more flexible, but a bigger pain to manage.  Any thoughts/advice?

    I've always stayed away from creating a qtree per-user. It always seemed like a lot more overhead for each user vs just creating them as a subdirectory of a qtree. I don't know how many users you are talking about but the max qtrees per-volume may be an issue. --rdp
