HOW TO BACKUP MAIL

I want to transfer all my emails, folders and preferences settings (including accounts settings) from my iMac to my Powerbook.
What folders and files I have to transfer?
I'm using Snow Leopard in both computers.

To back up your messages, back up the folder at the path in Templeton Peck's post.
For your Mail settings, go to your home folder/Library/Preferences, and back up com.apple.mail.plist
That's all you need, just that one folder and that one file. Copy them both to the same locations on your other Mac, and Mail should come right up with everything.

I'd like to know how to backup Mail in 10.3.9.
Help says to:
Copy all the files located in Home/Library/Mail.
Copy the file "com.apple.mail.plist," located in Home/Library/Preferences.
Copy the folder "AddressBook," located in Home/Library/Application Support.
NONE OF THESE THINGS EXIST on my computer. No folder called Mail in the Library. No folder called AddressBook in Application Support. No file called com.apple.mail.plist in Preference.
Please tell me how to backup my Mail.

Hi Sue,
Are you sure you are looking in the library folder within your account
HD/Users/youraccount/Library
and not in
HD/Library
or
HD/System/Library

• How To Backup Mail for Legal Purposes

How do I back up a Mail folder for legal purposes. Is printing out suffecient? These may need to be used in court and I want to make sure I have them saved or printed out properly.
Thanks in advance - Macbook Mom

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Depending on what type of legal arbitration is being done a printed copy may be sufficient. I would consult with the lawyer you are speaking to what is sufficient. Note, .Mac and IMAP servers are normally storing mail off where you are getting your e-mail from. POP normally stores it locally on your computer depending on your mail preferences. The advantage of the former is that you can take a notebook computer or any computer anywhere and retrieve them. The advantage of the latter is that it is securely in your possession except when it initially arrives at where you are getting e-mail from. Switching from one to the other you have to be very careful not to lose messages, as it may not save the messages from one to the other. Mail offers you the ability to create an "On my Mac" folder in the left hand side of Mail by control-mouse clicking the Inbox and making sure the location is on my Mac. If you store all your messages there, before you migrate from IMAP to POP or vice versa you will be safer. Once that is done, your messages are stored in Home (users -> yourname) -> Library -> Mail folder. Once it is stored there, it can be backed up to CD, DVD, or external hard drive.
If you are using some other mail client than Mac OS X Mail, it will store its messages elsewhere. Let us know if you need to know where Entourage, or Netscape, or some other client stores messages if they are POP or stored locally?

• How to backup the mails in mountain lion

Hello i am looking for help, can anyone tell me step by step how to backup and restore mail folders in mail in macbook

You can use Time Machine as your back up solution and/or any 3rd party back up software such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. Or, if your Mail folder is not very large you could copy it to a USB thumb drive.
Your user Mail folder resides in the user Library (~/Library). There are a couple of ways to get to it since it is hidden.
1. Open Terminal and type chflags nohidden ~/Library <--- This will unhide the user Library folder and you will see it under your user name within Finder.
2. Open Finder then press/hold the Option key while you click on Go / Go to Folder. You will see the Library folder under the Home folder in your list of selections. Select Library. Once Library shows up in the Finder window, you can click and drag its icon, in the Title portion of the Finder window, and place it in the Finder Sidebar.
Once the user Library is available to view, you can copy your Mail folder to a USB thumb drive for back up and restore from the USB thumb drive. If you decide to use Time Machine or a 3rd party software then you can do one of the following to restore the Mail folder depending on the software used.
1. If Time Machine was used, make sure you have a Finder window opened to your user Library. Enter Time Machine and navigate to the date you want to restore from. You can choose to restore it to its original location or a different location.
2. If you use a 3rd party software then you would can open Finder / Go / Go to Folder and type in the path to your user Library on the backup. For example /Volumes/MBP CCC Backup/Users/<username>/Library. Copy the Mail folder to where ever you want.
Hope this helps.

• How do I backup mail signatures

Hi
I am going to upgrade my OS to lion & was wondering how to backup important stuff like my email signatures that I can load once the OS is installed.
Any help would be great, never really back things up before oh, oh!

Hello, it'd be best to have a complete backup before you upgrade, but in theory 1st Installing 10.6/Snow Leopard, which you need to get Lion, should preserve all those things.
Second best would be to copy tour whole Home folder, next best would be...
On Mail...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail (Signatures are in this folder)
Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
For Address Book, quit AB...
Files...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
Folders...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/

• Redundent mail server setup (backup mail server)

i have been reading all the post of setting up a mackup postfix server. i have looked at the configuration files and have a second machine ready to be implemented but have some questions on how exactly the backup works. my current setup is:
- xserve1 with 10.4.3 OD master running mail, web, dns, ichat, ftp, host name is mail.mydomain.com
- xserve2 with 10.4.3 (i will make this replica) running web and backup dns
- G4 466MHz with 10.4.3 Server running mail and web, host name is mail2.mydomain.com (this is to bemy postfix backup server)
all 3 are behind a firewall with NAT. they have local LAN IPs with NAT to 3 separate WAN IPs and open ports for the needed services.
my first question is: do i need to run dns as well on mail2.mydomain.com?
while i understand that mail stays in the queue on the postfix backup, does that mean that while mail.mydomain.com (primary mail server) is down users will not be getting any mail? can the users actually login to the mail2.mydomain.com and if yes how do they authorize?
should i keep mail2.mydomain.com as a standalone or make it part of the directory?
any info is appreciated.
thanks
martin
xserve G5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)

don't mail servers hold mail for days anyway and keep
retrying and when our mail comes back up will get all
the mail?
Yes, they typically do (unless some braindead administrator has configured his server to try only for a few hours or so).
i assume there is no difference if my
backup mail server runs on 10.3.9 then?
None whatsoever.
- is there a practical way to set up a mail that
clinets can login to and check mail while the primary
server is down?
Practical? No.
can the backup server forward as well
while it holds to the queue?
Why would you want that? Where should it forward to if the primary is down? As soon as the primary is up, the secondary will forward to i.
the last time i had some
coruption and problems with reconstruct (which you
helped me with), we were down for 24 hours. i am
trying to avoid this. i have an image and i run
mailbfr to backup i assume i can use that in case of
harware failure or massive os corruption that may
take hours to fix.
If push comes to shove this may help. Although images are never too brilliant for mail services recovery.
my problem is that if this happens
during the week, during daytime we cannot really
afford to be down at that time.
This is really your call. Only you can decide how much money you want/need to throw at resilience. But if you decide you cannot afford more than an hour of downtime, you will need far more than an onsite secondary mx

• How to backup new learned remote-control data for the IR-remote APP???

Hello @ all,
does anybody know a way to backup the new learned remote control on XPERIA Z Tablet?
I found a database under:
"system/vendor/etc/sony-ir-remote/db"
But after I've saved new learned remote controls the date and the size of these DB's
are the same as before. Therefore the IR-remote control APP dosn't save the new data
in these files.
Furthermore there isn't a button in the remote-control APP to backup new learned remote controls.
And I can't choose the remote control APP in the backup function APP from the XPERIA Z Tablet
to save the data. Also the backup with the Sony PC Companion Software dosn't save the learned
remote controls. Who develops such a dross mobile software?
Sorry SONY, but you have the most unpalatable support I've lived to see!
The first SONY support center refered me to another support center.
The mobile support center does not answer to my questions per mail.
Then I call the mobile support center. The answers were shallow and standard.
The support engineer want to ask the development and call back.
However, I am still waiting for promised recall.

I am facing the same problem.
I have spend a few days to configure and train my Sony tablet to configure for all my remotes such as aircon and lighting. I did a backup using the Sony companion to my PC. When my tablet was faulty and serviced. But the backup did not recover the IR remote settings and codes which I programmed previously. I also tried your backup restore app but it also does not save the configuration.
It is VERY IMPORTANT for me to backup the settings.
Please provide the folders and path of where the IR REMOTE settings and personal configuration and codes trained were kept so that I could back them up. Are these path protected area that required rooted access?
Hope that Sony could update the app to include backup of new trained codes and settings and in the meantime to provide a procedure of how to backup the setting and trained IR codes with or without rooting the device.

The Three Best Alternatives for Security Questions and Rescue Mail
1. Use Apple's Express Lane.
Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the
bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then
'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Forgotten Apple
ID security questions' and click 'Continue'. Please be patient waiting for the return
phone call. It will come in time depending on how heavily the servers are being hit.
2. Call Apple Support in your country: Customer Service: Contact Apple support.

I do backup with iCloud. I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever. Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

• HT1620 How to backup in different iClound address

How to backup contact, photo, notes, mail, calendar to different iClound

If you want to be able to send via two different addresses and these addresses are separate accounts then the normal method is to add both accounts as separate accounts like you have. This however as you found means messages are stored separately under each account although Apple do also provide a merged view of both Inboxes as an option.
However from your post it seems the better way to achieve what you want would be as follows.
Delete the other email account leaving just the iCloud one
Edit the iCloud account settings
In the field where you enter the email address and where it currently only has the iCloud email address add the second email address as well and seperate the two with a comma so that it looke like
[email protected], [email protected]
This will let you chose which address to send from.
Note: This spoofing can cause some mail servers to consider your emails to be spam since you will be using a from address that does not match the iCloud account.

• How to stop Mail from uploading read messages

I am rebuilding Mail on a new hard drive from a backup Mail folder (POP account). I changed all the permissions on the old folder (including the internal folders) so I could replace the "new" Mail with the old backup Mail folder. Seemed to work except Mail now does not recognize previously read messages as read. It continually downloads hundreds of them -they are duplicates. And the message bodies are blank. Obviously I forgot to do something in my manual restore. Ideas on how to fix this?

Does anyone out there have a handy fix for this problem? I'm having the same issue, and it's driving me nuts. As of right now I have 8815 "unread" messages from Gmail...sigh. Some of those are truly unread, but definitely not 8815. Is there a way to sync Mail and Gmail so it recognizes which messages have been read/deleted/archived/etc?

• How long does Mail save messages?

How long does Mail save messages? What happens to them at the end of that period?

Depends. If you have a POP account and download your messages, then they are on your hard drive until you delete them. However, unless you enable the option to save email messages on the server once downloaded the message are deleted from the server immediately. Your email ISP may retain backups for some period of time, but you would need to ask them about it.
If you have and IMAP account your messages are saved on the server unless you delete them. They will be retained on the server indefinitely.

• HT201250 How to recover mails of outlook from time machine

How to recover mails of outlook from time machine

This worked for me:
From Time Machine, restore a good backup of the entire "/Users/james/Library/Application Support/Address Book" folder to a different location, like to a folder on your desktop.
(note: the Library folder typically won't show up in Finder. To make it visible, in Terminal, issue this command:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
then restart Finder: killall Finder )
Go offline. Do whatever you need to do to get completely disconnected from the internet (turn off Wireless, unplug the ethernet cable, etc.). Otherwise, iCloud will immediately overwrite your restore.
Delete the real folder: /Users/james/Library/Application Support/Address Book
Copy your restore (at the different location), to the real location ( /Users/james/Library/Application Support/Address Book )
Restart Contacts. Your restored data you want should be there. Before going online again, Export all these contacts (File - Export - etc...)
Go online again. iCloud will wipe out your Address Book with what's on iCloud. Re-import contacts as needed from your Export.
