How to backup my itunes library to my time capsule automatically?

so that i can wire my time capsule to my linn sneaky dsm hifi using network cable? because connecting my hifi using Airport express doesn´t always work. Maybe because all has to run over my mac?

No, the TC is useless.. you generally need an iTunes player in the setup... TC has no media ability whatsoever.. it is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router. It is a file store.. nothing more.
If you have your library stored on the TC and your linn sneaky dsm hifi
Can play files directly from an itunes library it would work.. but I doubt it.

iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder
But, before you do this, you might want to think about how you will backup the iTunes library that will be moved to the Time Capsule. (Time Machine cannot do this).
Since you will need another hard drive as the target for the backup of the iTunes library, it might make more sense to move your iTunes library to a hard drive attached directly to your Mac.
Then, Time Machine will back up both your Mac...and....the attached hard drive to your Time Capsule using Time Machine.

It seems the ability to restore from backup discs was removed along with the ability to create them. You will need to temporarily install an older version of iTunes (e.g. 10.3) to recover the media from those discs.
See Win 7 OS,64 Bit..Going back to ver 10.3 as I wish to use the cdbackup/restore version..I for a previous thread discussing this.

  • Keeping iTunes library on a time capsule

I want to be able to keep my music library on my time capsule instead of my iMac, both for purposes of not using up all my hard drive space and also to allow other computers to access it thru the network. However, itunes Does Not Want to do this. I've changed the location of the library thru Prefs>Advanced>itunes media folder location several times but it keeps reverting to the default of users/myname/music.
Basically it seems to hold the change as long as I keep the computer on, but once it restarts/is shut off, it reverts back.
Is there some way to make changes to the default 'stick'? There are other programs too that don't seem to want to keep my changes--for example I have safari and chrome set to reopen w/ previous tabs, but unless I close them out using the Option key they reopen w/ 1 tab at the default home page.
    Thanks!

    Don't do it that way.
Read these.  If you're going to start doing this you need to know how iTunes works.  This can get messy fast.
What are the iTunes library files? - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
More on iTunes library files and what they do - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes#Media_management

    You have two options.
    1) Share the whole library.  Disadvantages: a) Somebody makes changes you don't like then there's no way to undo it easily.  b) The library file can only be open on one computer at a time.
    2) Share just media.  Each user has their own library file but share media files.  Multiple people can run iTunes at the same time.  Gets slightly tricky making sure each computer is up to date on new media added.
To do 1) you should have:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music [library] to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527 - a somewhat bewildering and not always easily understandable set of options.
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.
For the record there's this reference for iTunes 11 but it really doesn't strike me as having the specifics you need. iTunes 11 for Mac: Move your library to another computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12168
To do 2 we can provide other instructions.
Finally, don't do this with Time Capsule.  When your TC drive dies you lose not only your original library but the backup at the same time.  Unless you have two TCs, one for a file server and the other as backup.

  • How to merge existing itunes library with another time machine volume?

    hi all,
i am 2 macs, an iMac and a MacBook - both running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and both running itunes 9.
is possible to merge the itunes library on the MacBook onto the iMac via my MacBook's Time Machine volume? i do not have my MacBook with me at this moment cos' i have sent it for diagnostic and repair. i have the latest itunes library backups on my MacBook's Time Machine.

i have never attempted such an operation, so no step-by-step guide !
you will be able to restore the other Mac's library to the iMac. go here and follow the instructions: http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/17.html. restore whatever you need to a temporary location, i.e. the desktop.
if you only want the media files, just restore the iTunes music folder. when restored, use +add to library+ from the file menu or just drag the folder you restored to the +automatically add to iTunes+ folder inside the iTunes folder.
if you also want playlists, playcounts, and ratings, you should restore the entire iTunes folder.
take a look @ PowerTunes. this app should enable you to merge the two libraries.
    good luck !

  • How do I move my iTunes library to my Time Capsule?

I referred to apple's support HT1449 and followed each step carefully. I then opened iTunes using the option button.
I'm getting a message saying the files cannot be found on the Time Capsule and iTunes is opening up and showing I have no content when I try to access the internal drive.
I'm very frustrated. I have tried this several times! What am I missing?

    Marcia Neal wrote:

HT1449 support article is for moving the iTunes media folder not the iTunes library.
I then opened iTunes using the option button.
That article does not mention anything about Option button.
Option is when you move the iTunes library.
Do you still have the entire iTunes folder on the internal?
    If so...
    Quit iTunes.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to the external.
Hold the Option key, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external.
That is all you need to do.

  • How do I configure my large iTunes Library on my Time Capsule?

I really would like to configure iTunes so that the full library with all my movies, music videos, holiday music, and podcasts, are saved on my Time Capsule and then I can choose what to take with me on my MacBook Air, in a similar way that I do with my iPhone.  For those of us in parts of the world without unlimited internet access, ICloud is not a good option.  Thanks.

I got that impression but needed confirmation.  However, I do see on each of my two AirPort Expresses that I can create a guest network option.  When I enter either and go to Wireless, I see a box to click "Enable Guest Network" with an area in which I can name the guest network.  This is where I am not sure of what to do.  When I click on the box to enable, it defaults to a name.  1.  I want to rename it; 2.  underneath that it has an arena entitled "guest network security."  That defaults to "none" but of course I would want to create some security.  So, when I click the drop-down, I get two options:  WPA/WPA2 Personal and WPA2 Personal.
This is as far as I got.  I haven't selected any options yet due to concern that I'll pick the wrong one and screw up my network.  Can you advise me?

  • HT1449 I moved my itunes library to the time capsule. Everytime I put the computer to sleep, I have to change the location back to the time capsule. I cannot get the iTunes library to stay located in the time capsule.

My itunes library does not stay in its new location in the time capsule. Every time I put the computer to sleep or leave it alone for awhile, the itunes location goes back to the original location in the macbook. Then I have to change the location back to the time capsule and wait for it to reorganize all the files again. So the question is how to keep my itunes in its new location the time capsule?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
+Can someone please provide a definite answer, or at least warn against using the TC as a shared media device on a network. The whole point of getting such a device is to be able to offload large multimedia libraries from the laptops, yet access a shared library when networked. N'est ce pas?+
We're all users here...not pros...so you'll get few definitive answers on a forum with varying opinions about almost every subject.
My opinion would be this: Apple designed the Time Capsule for Time Machine to automatically backup all the files on your Mac and other Macs in the household on a regular basis and provide a way to retrieve a file that had been deleted recently by mistake. It's a pretty good router as well.
If you check the info about the Time Capsule on Apple's site, the main features mentioned are backup of your Macs and a dual band wireless network capability.
The Time Capsule was never designed to be a media server housing audio, video and other multi-media files and has never been promoted as such. Nevertheless, some users seem to have adopted the stance that this should be one of the benefits of the device, if not a main feature.
There may be a need for media server type device, but the Time Capsule, at least at this time, is not the answer. If you feel otherwise, you might want to speak directly to Apple and let them know via Time Capsule Feedback.

  • I want to move my iTunes library to my Time Capsule for both my Mac and my husbands PC to access

I have a Mac, with various iPads and iPhones in the family and a family network running from a Time Capsule.  I wish to move my iTunes library (which is home shared and connected to iTunes Match) from my Mac to my Time Capsule as it is using a large portion of my hard drive.  I then want my husbands/childrens PCs/laptops to also connect to this one iTunes library.

The library is working in its new location?  You moved it by copying the whole iTunes folder and not by changing any preferences settings?
I haven't done anything with library sharing so I'm no expert, but you will probably want your setup so each person has their own library but you use a common source of media.  One major issue is if you are using the library on your computer, nobody else will be able to use it because the library files can only be open by one iTunes application at a time.  Some of this might be possible with Home Sharing, or you can simply keep a common pool of media and trust each other not to accidentally delete a file everybody else is using.
Another item of concern is putting this on the Time Capsule drive.  Normally that is used for backup purposes and if you have you media on there too then you have no library backup.  Yes, you can use Match but it isn't really a backup service.  E.g., if you have media stored as lossless on the computer, match doesn't store it as lossless but in reduced quality.  It also won't back up the other things in your library such as playlists.

  • Cant get to my iTunes library on my Time Capsule.

    Hello everybody,
I have some problems since today with my iTunes library which is located on my Time Capsule, and before today I could always access it on my MacBook Pro.
Although today it gave me the error when opening the library: The 'iTunes Library.itl' file is locked on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this file.
Which I had before, although if I go to the information by CMD + I, it doesnt show my username at the bottom part, as you can see in the picture.
(onbekend) means (unknown) and when I want to change anything in it it wont allow me. How could this have happened?

Try forcing your Time Capsule to restart.

  • I have copied my iTunes library to my time capsule. I am trying to point the iTunes to use the file within the time capsule but it does not show up. However I see the file when i open it thought the finder. Please assist.

    Hi,
    I will apprecite your help.
I find the copied file to time capsule though finder bt not when I open the pointer.
    can anyone help?
    Regards

No I have not watched a video to move iTunes.
You are trying to convince me that the video is correct.. but you are having issues..
I tend to consider Apple's documentation superior .. not that they always get it right.
If it doesn't work we need more info.
    Is this Mavericks?
Is the youtube video using Mavericks.. ?? If not then I suspect your problem is due to poor networking in Mavericks.
Ensure you follow the rules for SMB networking..
All names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Try manually mounting the hard disk in Finder via Go, Connect to Server.. make sure the TC is mounted before you try to connect to the library.
You will have constant problems because the TC is unsuitable for iTunes.

  • ITunes Library is on Time Capsule, the link to file in iTunes always breaks

i've finally consolidated all of my music to a time capsule. i'm finding that everytime the computer shuts down, the links in iTunes to the TC library are broken. if i double click a tune, it does immediately find the link and plays the music.
is there a way to have iTunes just re-link everything? better yet, keep it linked? it only seems to re-link manually one tune at a time, requiring a double click. ugh!
    thanks-

yeah, i had already done that. thanks for your input but my problem is slightly different.
meaning, i'm fully connected to the time capsule yet iTunes still has broken links for every song. i can double click a song and it will automatically connect/play but it won't re-link the library by itself. really frustrating, as after a song is over it stops (can't play a full album, genre, playlist, etc.). something is strange...

  • ITunes library stored on Time Capsule or other NAS drive?

On the iPad, can I use an iTunes library that is stored on an external, network-attached disk?
In other words, I'd like to put all my music on the Apple Time Capsule drive (or other NAS disk drive) and play it from iTunes on my iPad. Is that possible? If not, are there any updates, software extensions etc. coming out that would make it possible?
    Thanks!

Actually I searched again and found this ipad app called FileBrowser:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/filebrowser-access-files-on/id364738545?mt=8
It says it supports NAS and people say in their reviews that they can stream music from their NAS drives using this app.
And after all, it would have been hard to imagine that ipad can't access the NAS when even my Android phone can do it.

  • Can anyone tell me how to backup my iTunes library to my computer (not an external).I am running 10.6.8.

Help! I just realized my iTunes is not backed up. I need to find a way to back it up to the hard drive on my computer (not hard drive). I want to put it there so it backs up to my carbonite. . . .

I suppose nobody is answering this because we are puzzed.  iTunes is an application.  It works with library files and media files.  All these things are  on your computer.  If they aren't there then they aren't "iTunes".  So what exactly is it you are trying to back up and where is it?  Are these Cloud files, or on an i-device?  If so, you need to specify.
You can "back up" your iTunes files to the same hard drive (duplicate the whole iTunes folder).  This may help in a minor way in case of file corruption, but loss danger is more likely from fire, theft, or drive failure which will take out the same drive holding the backup files.

  • How do I backup my itunes library to cd?

    Hi.
Can anyone please post the link to support or is able to give me instructions on how to backup my itunes library to a cd?
    Many thanks.

iTunes won't do it any more. You can use whatever 3rd party CD/DVD burning tools came with your machine, but I'd recommend you use an external hard drive and backup the library with this User Tip.
