How to backup to OSX server sitting in a different network?

Hi, i have a mac mini with 3 TB of external hard drive running on a diffrent network range. I want a couple of users to backup their data on their machine to the mac mini server which is running the time machine backup server. How do i achieve this?

Are you getting an error? The way you have it set up, you can have an error and it will never be displayed. Put and error control on your front panel and see what it gives you. Also, shared variables in a project can be useful. Look at some examples for that.

  • Cloud Backup for OSX Server

    I'm trying to figure out what the best option is for a cloud based backup for OSX Server.
    Ideally:
    1.  Does not require a local user to be logged in on the server to function
    2.  Able to include/exclude files/folders
    3.  Bonus:  Cloud based sharing of folders (like dropbox, which just doesn't work well on OSX Server and of course isn't a backup option)
    Recs?

    CrashPlan Pro service.
    Works well with OS X Server, retains permissions, ext attributes, ACLs, etc.
    $8/month unlimited
    They do have an iOS app that lets you access your archive and save archived files to the ios device.
    Some people have issues with java memory.. In general, I have fewer issues with this than other systems.
    I backup about 180 machines (almost half are servers) with crashplan pro or crashplan pro enterprise.

  • Automated backups of OSX Server 10.5 with Time Capsule (TC)

    I am running OSX 10.5 Server on a G5. The server is working well. I have the server plugged into a TC. I would like to do automated backups from the server to the TC.
    I can read and write to the TC disk fine from the server.
    When I try to configure Time Machine to do automated backups of the server to the TC it does not work. I set the preferences in TM. It seems to accept them. But the configuration never gets saved, and so TM always complains "Time Machine Error - No backup volume has been selected. To select a backup volume, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine."
    This is of course is what I have just done, but the changes are not getting saved.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    If you use Time Capsule with Time Machine, almost all of your computer's disk drive contents (except what you exclude) will be backed up to the Time Capsule disk. If you don't use Time Machine, you can put whatever you want to on the Time Capsule disk.
    You can also attach an external USB drive to your Time Capsule and move anything you want to that.
    I also have an Apple TV. Will this be a problem being connected too?
    No.
    I am a little confused as to how to do this. My G4 is getting pretty sluggish, and I want to clean it up some. What program can use to help get rid of the old programs I have that are not using and trash them? Do I just drag them to the trash?
    For the most part, dragging programs to the trash will eliminate all but "preference" files. To locate those, look in <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences.

    Back up your data and do an archive and install of the client software.
    If it was me, I would back up the data, boot from the client disk and format the drive, or use my disk image I made of the machine prior to installing server.

  • How do i remove  osx server from my mac mini and just run mac osx lion

    i don'r wish to run osx server just osx lion. how do i remove the server software?

    One possibility is to obtain the DMG for OS X Lion, boot from it and reinstall the client version.
    In my past experience, you'll keep the OS X Lion Server recovery partition, but you will most definitely be running OS X Lion without the server software deployed.
    (I'm not sure if you can uninstall the Server software from a Mac Mini Server -- this appears to be integrated with the OS)

  • How do we setup OSX Server 10.4.9 to allow Windows XP SP2 to print?

    Background information:
    We have 3 printers setup on OSX Server 10.4.9.
    All 3 are shared in the Print Server as IPP & SMB.
    Windows Services are up and running as a PDC allowing users to login and use anything in their respective home folders from the Windows computers.
    All computers are on the same network/subnet.
    We have made no major changes to OSX Server at this point.
    Problem:
    Someone logs into one of the Windows computers using the Domain ran by OSX Server.
    In Windows explorer they goto \\SERVER. Once there they see all 3 printers and a "Printers and Faxes" folder containing the same 3 printers.
    The 3 printers inside "Printers and Faxes" allow their queues to be looked at in Windows but will not allow themselves to be connected to the Windows computer. They give the same message that the 3 printers outside of the "Printers and Faxes" folder give:
    "A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue. Please contact your system administrator."
    Question:
    What must we do in order to get the printers working for use with Windows?

  • How do I stop OSX from creating ._ thumbnails of network files

    Our macs are networked to Windows servers that hold a large amount of image files. These are updated on a continual basis unfortunately the files can't be saved directly to the server but copied blindly into the folder from our macs. The ._ invisible files on the mac appear in windows, not really a big deal (although I would rather they didn't exist a all) The big problem comes when the folders on the server are opened on the mac, it takes forever for the mac to create the little alias or thumbnail files for each image. How do I stop OSX from doing this.

  • How to edit the same iWeb site on 2 different Macs?

    How can I edit the same iWeb site on 2 different Macs? I know we create a folder with the files, but when copying that to Mac2, iWeb on Mac2 doesn't see that folder - I can't see what the linkage is between the app's interface and the folder of site files....

    The answer is Domain.sites (extension hidden by default). You'll find this on the Mac you used to create the site at Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/iWeb. Copy that file to removable media and drag it to the same location on the other Mac. Launch iWeb and you'll see the site structure in the Site Organizer.
    Once you keep the Domain package in sync between the two machines everything will work smoothly no matter which you use. There's a neat tip here which may help in this respect, but you use whatever strategy you prefer:

  • How can I read published data from a datasocket server running in a different network?

    Hi all,
    I have been trying to solve this problem but without any success. I want to develop data acquisition Vi to run on a computer on a remote location. I want to use the datasocket technology to acquire and publish this data so that in my office (in a different network), I can read the published data and perform analysis with it. I can successfully use this approach for the two computers in the same network but not when they are in different networks. My real problem is how to specify the URL for the acquisition computer in one network while the analysis Vi runs on a different network.
    I have attached two Vis to illustrate my point (I simply want to be able to read the random numbers generated in the acquisition computer in a different network). The first Vi (RemoteDatasocketWrite.vi) will run on the remote computer with an IP address (192.168.0.110). My office computer on which RemoteDatasocketRead.vi runs has an IP address (192.168.0.11) and I can log in remotely into the remote computer using Remote Desktop Protocol with name (emelvin.001.eairlink.com) from my office computer.
     Is it possible to do what I am trying to do or is there a simpler way to solve this problem?
    I will really appreciate any help towards a solution to this problem.
    Thanks

  • How to transfer the coherence cache t to a different network/environment?

    Hi,
    I have a requirement where in i need to import/export cache from one network into a different network/environment all together keeping the cache data intact. How do i achieve this from Coherence side? I am using distributed cache scheme.
    Regards,
    Radhika

    You could serialize to a file the content of the cache then read it back at the other end.  The cache dump usually does not take much time even for GB sized caches.  The import usually takes more time.
    Here is sample code to serialize the content of a cache.  Ideally you should use POF to have already compacted data.
    Export:
         public void exportCache(String cacheName, File file) throws Exception {
              WrapperBufferOutput wrappedBufferOutput = null;
              try {
                   NamedCache cache = CacheFactory.getCache(cacheName);
                   FileOutputStream fileOutputStream = new FileOutputStream(file);
                   BufferedOutputStream bufferedOutputStream = new BufferedOutputStream(fileOutputStream, 1024 * 1024);
                   DataOutputStream dataOutputStream = new DataOutputStream(bufferedOutputStream);
                   wrappedBufferOutput = new WrapperBufferOutput(dataOutputStream);
                   ConfigurablePofContext pofContext = (ConfigurablePofContext) cache.getCacheService().getSerializer();
                        for (Object o : cache.entrySet()) {
                             pofContext.serialize(wrappedBufferOutput, ((Map.Entry) o).getValue());
              } finally {
                   if (wrappedBufferOutput != null) {
                        wrappedBufferOutput.close();
             timer.print();
    Here is sample code to deserialize the content of a cache store on a file:
    Import:
    public void importCache(String cacheName, File file) throws Exception {
              WrapperBufferInput wrappedBufferInput = null;
              try {
                   NamedCache cache = CacheFactory.getCache(cacheName);
                   FileInputStream fileInputStream = new FileInputStream(file);
                   BufferedInputStream bufferedInputStream = new BufferedInputStream(fileInputStream, 1024 * 1024);
                   DataInputStream dataInputStream = new DataInputStream(bufferedInputStream);
                   wrappedBufferInput = new WrapperBufferInput(dataInputStream);
                   ConfigurablePofContext pofContext = (ConfigurablePofContext) cache.getCacheService().getSerializer();
                   while (wrappedBufferInput.available() > 0) {
                        ImportableObject o = (ImportableObject) pofContext.deserialize(wrappedBufferInput);
                        cache.put(o.getObjectKey(), o);
              } finally {
                   if (wrappedBufferInput != null) {
                        wrappedBufferInput.close();
    Here we assume that cache entries implement ImportableObject interface which has the getObjectKey() method.  This make it easy to figure out the key of the entry without knowing its real type.

  • How to backup a Linux server over ssh using Leopard?

    I have a server running Linux, and my main machine is a Macbook running Leopard. I want to back up the entire root directory (including subdirectories) of the Linux server to an external HDD attached to Macbook.
    My initial thought was to mount the Linux server's root directory on Leopard using sshfs, and then use RSyncX to backup that mounted directory on external HDD attached to Leopard. Unfortunately sshfs mounted directories are not treated as "drives" by RsyncX (and a lot of other apps).
    Can someone help? Thanks!

    I am currently in the process of setting up a small form factor pc running a linux distro as my router/firewall and will be looking for a backup system on my network which is mostly mac based.
    I just googled 'timemachine for linux' and got a few good results.
    http://handsonhowto.com/2007/timemachine4linux/
    and also a tool call flyback
    You could also try setting up your backup drive as an NFS sharepoint.

    I know my post does not answer your issue directly but flyback is the solution I am going to try.

  • How to Backup a Production Portal site

    Hi,
    I would like to know if there are any best practises that can be used to backup a Portal site. I am using 9.0.1.1.1 DB and 9i AS 1.0.2.2.2. We have a production site that is going live on 7th of this month, so its critical that we have a Good, Working method of backuping and restoring the portal. Any help welcome. A List of todo's would be great.
    thanks
    Makario

    so I am looking for a simple answer. In
    > case my computer crashed, what do I do to backup
    You should backup the dreamweaver "site definition" so you
    could quickly
    define this site in dw again.
    dw menu-->Site-->Manage Sites
    select this site from list
    click Export
    Save the .ste file. Move it to some other drive/media.
    You should backup the site's assets, the actual files used in
    the site which
    are in this site's Local Site Folder
    If unsure of where these are- go to
    dw menu-->Site-->Manage Sites
    select this site from list
    click Edit
    click Advanced tab to find things quicker.
    In Local Site information, what's the path listed for "Local
    Site Folder"?
    Go there. copy that folder and back it up.
    Also- if there are any original files such as artwork or such
    that are not
    within the local site folder, back those up.
    Also Also- If your site has a feature such as a "control
    panel" or CPanel,
    log into it and look for a Backup icon.
    Depending on your hosting's features- explore the options.
    If it's CPanel on linux/apache, suggest you do this:
    a FULL backup.
    a Home Directory backup
    a Database MySQL backup (if you are using it)
    an email forwarder or filter backup (if using)
    (again, if your hosting has this) these .tar.gz files stored
    on your machine
    or backup media will allow you to quickly restore your site
    to this host or
    almost any other host using CPanel. And even if can't restore
    with a single
    upload- the .tar.gz files can be extracted/expanded to
    recover any single
    file that was on the site at the time the backup was created.

  • Can't figure out how to make my OSX Server / AD (magic triangle) work- Please help

    Hi there,
    I have set up a machine with Mac OS X 10.9.1 and Server.app 3.0.2. I think installation and configuration was made ok (I do have experience with Macs and I am part-time admin for the Active Directory in my organisation). I set up a magic triangle by binding my Mac server to an Active Directory domain. Now, I am not a specialist for this so I bought and used "OS X Mountain Lion Server For Dummies" by John Rizzo, which helped me. I did set up everything, even including AD users to OD groups on the Mac server.
    Now, I'm biding a Mac client to my OD server, and trying to log in. Can't do that. Any username I type that is not a local client name does not work. I have tried to use 'username' as a login and also 'DOMAINNAME\username', none of which work. I also tried to create a local network user on my OD server, and even with that username I can't log in on the client.
    I did check System preferences / Users and groups :
    - There is a green light next to my OD server name
    - I checked the "allow network users to log in" and checked that "All users" are ok for login.
    Two things that don't seem normal but I can't understand :
    - Kerberos seems off on the server (klist in terminal returns nothing and Ticket Viewer.app shows no ticket)
    - If I try to specify network users that CAN log in (i.e. not "everyone") I see users in the editor window but can't add them to the list
    I'm kinda lost here. Anyone wishing to help?

    No reason to be angry as it's in his book on page 112. You possibly did not understand its significance until you'd done it yourself?
    In an AD-OD integrated environment (I prefer this to 'Magic Triangle' as there is no triangle as such) there are no users in OD. They're all in AD. You nest AD Users or Groups (best to use groups) into an OD Group and apply managed preferences that way. You could bypass group nesting if you wish and simply create OD Computer Groups instead. Manage the workstations directly. All users admin or not, local or otherwise would have have those preferences applied.
    "Are preferences correctly inherited between AD and OD groups and users?"
    In my experience they are.
    "What if I want users in some AD Groups to be controlled users on the client and users in other AD groups to be admins on the client?"
    You can do the first part of the question using the provided Server Tools, PM or WGM. To make users local admins you use a terminal command. You don't want to be doing this for student accounts. To make AD groups administrators access Directory Utility's Advanced Options section in the AD plug-in. Clicking on the Administrative tab should give you the option you may be looking for? Alternatively you could use the command line (man dsconfigad) as there are more settings available using it than there are in the GUI.

  • How can I upload my iWeb site to 2 different domain addresses?

    I have two different domain names, but I want to publish one iWeb site to both addresses.
    I can't work out how to do it, I was thinking to duplicate the whole site but using the other address. Then I would have to make indiviual changes to both sites when updating content etc.
    There must be an easier way to do this, I am missing something?

    Your info says you use iWeb 08.
    That means you publish to a folder.
    If so, iWeb is not involved. You decide what to do with the published files on the desktop.
    With iWeb 09 you only have one FTP address. To publish to another server you have to change the publish info.
    But everytime you do that, iWeb will publish the entire site.
    You can't have both. iWeb was not meant for that.
    Anyway, you provided the solution yourself : duplicate websites for each server.
    There's actually no need to make the changes in each site.
    Make changes in one site, and duplicate the page to the other site.
    Then publish.
