How to be Sure my iMac sees my Preferred Wireless Network Each Bootup

I am still setting up my new iMac and deciding what to keep and what not to keep from my previous primary computer (G4 iMac running Tiger). The old G4 is still hardwired to my D-Link wireless router (DIR 615) and my new 21.5 inch is connecting wirelessly. The connection is basically really good and the iMac picked it up right away upon initial setup. I will eventually move the new iMac into the old G4's place and wire it up.
Here's my occasional difficulty. Sometimes, when my old G4 is off and I boot my new iMac I get a message saying something like my preferred network cannot be found. Usually I am given an opportuity to then log into said preferred network and it works fine. I, as best I can tell, have it designated the preferred (and so far the only) network in Network preferences. It seems like when my old G4 is already booted up that this is not a problem and my new iMac immediately connects.
As an aside, a household iPod touch and an Xbox 360 have no problem connecting with my D-Link regardless of whether the G4 is booted or not. The status of the G4 may just be a red herring and I may have just overlooked something in the network setup on my new iMac, although there really was no setup to speak of, it just worked from the start.
Thanks for any ideas.
Regards,
Steve M.

It says my 3.01 is current and no updates are available. It does actually give me this message.
Since my router is basically working OK now, I guess I won't pursue updating the firmware anymore than doing this check. Thanks.

Steve M.

  • How come my mac doesn't remember my preferred wireless network?

I have to pick it out of a list every time. I have deleted the network and recreated it, but not luck. Is there a preference file I need to trash and then restart my computer? This started happening out of nowhere.

Thanks to eveyone that replied. None of the suggestions fixed my problem, but they look like they fixed at least one other person's, kudos to all of you. I ultimately "fixed" the problem by reformatting the drive and reinstalling snow leopard. I did NOT elect to transfer my Settings when I used Migration Assistant to move the stuff from my backup. Extreme? Yep, but it worked. Warning if you have Norton Antivirus 11, if you do what I did, NAV gets screwed up and you will likely need to email NAV support for a newer version.

I think the best you can do is use the System Information application (Utilities Folder), looking in the wireless section.

  • Using the iMac to create a wireless network. Is it possible?

At my college, we are not allowed to have routers. We can use switches that allow us to share the connection among many computers. I have a wired Intel iMac. I want to know if I use iMac to create a wireless network that way I can connect my Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS.

It is not possible to do this, but this will solve your problem:
    Wireless-G Linksys Access Point
Add High-Speed Wireless Access To Your existing Wired Network!
This is not a router, so you are probably allowed to use this. This will bridge your ethernet signal to a wireless signal.
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem.

  • How to use Airport Extreme to create a second wireless network with different IP addresses behind an existing modem/router?

    Hi,
I have an existing modem/router from my ISP that does DHCP and NAT with base IP 192.168.1.1 distributed in the wireless network. I use this wireless network for our private devices. I could turn off the DHCP server in this first router, but there isn't a separate setting to turn off NAT.
I want to connect my Airport Extreme (4th gen) to this existing router to create a separate wireless network for visiting guests, where IP addresses of 10.0.0.0 etc. are used. So I do not want to use the Airport Extreme in bridge mode, as I would like to keep the devices on the first network 'invisible' for those on the second network. (P.S. when connected in bridge mode, the Airport works well and can distribute a network with a different name from the first. It's just that I would feel more comfortable about our privacy if the Airport were to distribute a different IP range. False security, maybe?)
I've tried doing this by 'Sharing a public IP address' in Airport Utility's Internet tab, leaving TCP/IP's setting to 'via DHCP', setting DHCP addresses to start with 10.0.0.2 up to 200 with all else blank, and not using a standard host nor NAT-PMP in the NAT tab.
When I do this the Airport complains of a 'double NAT issue'. Internet connectivity seems to be OK, but when switching between the two networks on my Mac I get complaints about my IP address being in use by another device intermittently.
Can anyone help in how to get the 'double NAT issue' resolved?
    Thanks!

So if someone is connected to the modem/router network they will be able to see the HD I will have put in to the AirPort Extreme?
As I said above.....since the modem/router and AirPort are bridged, devices on the modem/router wireless will be able to "see" devices on the AirPort wireless, and vice versa.....
If they can see the HD connected to the AirPort Extreme, will they be able to access it
Yes, unless you plan to password protect the drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.
or will they still need the password needed to get onto the AirPort Extreme network?
The modem/router and AirPort Extreme are bridged. They are on the same network. All devices are on the same network when the modem/router and AirPort are bridged. Not sure how else that I can say this.
Also, because it is bridged, I shouldn't have any problems accessing the HD I will have connected to the AirPort Extreme from an external location?
Accessing devices from a remote location is never easy....and a topic for a different post/discussion. If you have a "static" Internet IP address from your provider, and have all the details on how to forward ports on your modem/router, you are off to a good start.
Apparently there is some addressing issues because devices can be seen as "Double IP" because the modem/router would have allocated IP's as well as the AirPort allocating IP's thus making connections slower until resolved
When you "bridge", all IP addresses are issued by one device. There will be no conflicts on the network, since they are bridged.
Once again, in very simple terms, you have two doors (access points) that open into the same room (network).  One "door" is the modem/router and the other "door" is the AirPort Extreme. They are on the same network....("room") because they are bridged.

  • IMac can connect to wireless network automatically

All of a sudden, my mac won't automatically join my wireless network. I can find the network easily and connect to it, but it doesn't connect automatically like it used to. This seems odd as iphones have no problem finding the wi fi network and connecting. This seems to have cropped up after I added another user account, but that may be totally unrelated. Any ideas how to fix this? Let me know if there are more details I can provide. Thanks.

I've had this same thing for months now and I have no idea why. I do know that it started right around the time that I upgraded my iMac to Snow Leopard, but laptop (Pro) is still just regular old Leopard and it happens with it as well. I've tried everything - the approach in the previous reply to your question included - and have still had no luck. I tried all the old (2008, etc.) apple discussion forum stuff too. No joy. Please let me know if you figure it out because at this point in time I've tried everything I know. Granted, selecting a network every time I power up or wake a computer from sleep is not going to kill me, it's just....annoying.

  • How can I get airport to connect automatically to wireless network?

I temporarily switched from a DSL internet provider to a cable provider, and then back to my old DSL Internet provider. My g5 iMac computer connects to the network through a wireless Belkin router.
Since I switched Internet providers, every time I turn on my computer, it no longer automatically connects into the wireless network. Instead, to connect I now have to manually select the network.
I'd really appreciate tips on automating this step. My kids use this computer and due to parental restrictions, they do not have rights to connect to the network.

    Hi there,
Strictly speaking changing how the internet is coming into the wireless router should not affect the wireless and how machines connect to it, but however to get you out of a hole I would say create a new Location for your home and start again.
Basically,Disable your wireless first, then in your network settings there is a drop down box at the top of the panel where you can change and create new locations. Create a new one, then select it and click Apply. Now enable your airport and connect to the wireless, once that is done you should be good to go.
    Hope that helps,

  • How do I use a wired computer on the wireless network?

I want to hardwire my desktop to my wireless router. I have a wireless adapter and my computers work fine on the wireless network. If I try to plug in the ethernet cable to the router and disable the wireless adapter, it doesn't work. The light lights up on the front of the router saying that the ethernet cable is plugged in and the 1394 network connection is enabled in the "network connections." However, I cannot ping the router when using the ethernet. On the desktop computer, I look in "view workgroup computers" and there are no computers listed there. On the back of the computer, there is a light that lights up when I insert the cable, so I know the computer has detected there is a cable plugged in there.
They way I set up my wireless network is by using XP's tool under network tasks called "set up a wireless network for a home or small office" (which is found in "My Network Places." I don't know how to combine a wireless network with a wired network. Please help me.
I am using WRT54G. We don't have broadband installed yet.

Correct…I would not mess w/ the bios. Do you have an extra cat5 cable long enough to plug into the back of your router to the back of your PC? Hopefully, it was not taken out when the wireless NIC was installed. Do you see a place to plug in the cable on the back of your PC? It looks like a phone connection jack/ modem, only bigger. If not, what kind of machine, OS (Win 2K, Win XP, etc).

  • How do I use airport express to extend my wireless network?

How vcan I extend the range of my wireless network using Airport Express?

It appears that you may have "join a wireless network" and "extend a wireless network" mixed up a bit.
The Express can "join" virtually any wireless network produced by any manufacturer's router if it is provided with the correct settings:
    name of the wireless network
    the correct wireless security settings
    and correct password.
"Join" is normally used for AirTunes or to connect a USB printer to the Express for remote printing.
But, the Express does not provide any additional wirless coverage when it "joins" another wireless network.
Apple's "Extend a wireless network" feature, which was introduced about 5 years ago, allows the Express to connect to another Apple "n" wireless router and then "repeat" or "extend" the wireless signal....providing more wireless coverage in the area where the Express is located.
This is a proprietary setting. Apple says it will not work with devices from other manufacturers. To our knowledge, this is correct.
Prior to 2007, Apple used a setting called WDS to allow the Express to be configured to provide more wireless coverage. Attempts were made by a number of manufacturers to standardize the WDS settings, but things were never finalized.
The result is that Apple's older "b/g" routers were sometimes compatible with WDS settings from another manufacturer. There were a handful of products....5 or 6, as I recall....that were said to work. Some did, some didn't. Linksys had a couple of models, Netgear had one, SMC another, etc.  Extremely limited.
Since WDS was never adopted as an industry standard, manufacturers developed their own WDS settings. Compatibility was extemely limited and unreliable. That continues to this day with WDS.
Bottom line....It is always best to stick with the same manufacturer throughout your network as far as routing is concerned.
If you have an newer "n" Apple router like an AirPort Extreme, the Express can extend the wireless as can along Extreme. If your Extreme is dual band, and you want to extend both bands, then you need another Extreme.
Another responder suggested to someone that they could connect the AirPort Express to a router via Ethernet.  What exactly would that achieve?
That is a completely different subject since this discussion is about extending a wireless network using wireless only.

  • How do I make my HP PhotoSmart 3210 printer wireless Network

How do I make my HP PhotoSmart 3210  printer wireless. It has an Ethernet port which works fine but I want to print on my current wireless network. Can you use any wireless router of G or N? What else can I use? I'm looking for the cheapest option. Also, It has bluetooth, can I use any USB bluetooth for that to work.? I would rather use my network but if all else fails bluetooth will have to due
I am currently runnning windows 7 if it matter. But, I don't think it does.

    Hi,
Buy a new wireless printer could be much cheaper and no headache. Or you can try something like this:

  • How to connect an Ethernet laser printer to a wireless network?

hi, I have three computers on an Airport Xpress wireless network. I have an (non-USB) HP Laserjet 4100 that has a network card (10/100tx HP Jetdirect 600N). How do I connect this printer to my network? Can I wire it directly to one of my computers using a standard ethernet cable? or do I have to set up a hub? Any insight most appreciated!

There's another way to do it...
I have a Linksys wireless router for my home network (and internet) and have my HP LaserJet 4000 hooked up to it, and all my computers can print to it. However, it does require a Windows computer for set-up, because HP makes the set-up utility for Windows only. (I set it up with my Intel Mac running Win)
    Follow these instructions:

  • How do I connect my printer to a new wireless network?

I currently have a MacBook Pro and HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-one printer. I have had the printer a long time, and have since lost the cable to connect it to my laptop, and any paperwork or cds recieved with it.
I have been unable to figure out how to change my printer's settings so it is connected to my new house's wireless network, the wireless test report showed it is trying to connect to my old one in another town. I have a usb cable I can borrow to hook the printer up to my laptop, but would like to be able to just print wirelessly. Is there any way to do so?

If you want to change your existing connection to a wireless network, follow these instructions.
    Open HP Device Manager.
Figure 5: HP Device Manager icon
From the Information and Settings drop-down menu, click Setup Assistant .
The HP Setup Assistant window opens.
Follow the on-screen instructions to change your connection type to an existing wireless network.
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.
