How to become Mentor & Moderator?

Dear Friends,
I was just tracking the earlier post regarding how to become a Moderator, but there seem no definite answers...
Can someone please tell me answers to following:
1. How to become a Mentor in any one of SDN Forum?
2. How to become a Moderator in any one of the SDN Forum?
Thanks,
Jignesh Mehta

They never recommend the members to search forum even for a basic question. Moderators should not have soft corner and if somebody violates the rules of engagement of this forum, they move the threads to other forums, lock the threads,  guestify the members. If any thread is found inappropriate, they will move it to coffee corner by default.
I disagree with you on this from both angles.
First, although not a SCN Mentor, I mentor and have mentored many juniors/freshers.  It's a sometimes frustrating, but mainly rewarding task, that I'm glad to undertake.  As a mentor though, I have zero patience for people who won't try to help themselves and expect answers to be spoonfed.  I want those under my guidance to learn how to fish - not just give them a fish.
So mentoring involves not just helping with the specifics, but also guiding people in the techniques for solving problems themselves.
Now, moderating isn't all about enforcement - it's also about education.
With regards to easily searched, basic questions, if the person has clearly tried and still not got it, then I'll gladly help.  But questions like "how do I convert dd/mm/yyyy to yyyymmdd", "how do I send external email from SAP", "how do I download a table to my PC" - these Frequently Asked Questions - no-one, never mind mentors should be responding. They should be reported to the moderators.
Now, with newbies, I, at least, strive to be gentle, by for example, sending them an email asking them to read the Rules of Engagement, and to try to search first.  I even suggest what keywords to use.  But if they've a few hundred posts, then they'll get a stern rejection.  Even then, some people just don't pay attention. sigh  On the other hand, some people manage to get a stay of execution by showing, and proving, a desire to change.  One of our best contributors came very close to guestification in the early days, but "heaven has more joy over one sinner who repents...!".
My goal as a moderator is to keep the forums clean and useful.  Not just as a place to ask questions and get answers, but also a searchable resource.  Otherwise, we might as well just delete all questions older than a month!

  • How to become a Moderator in SDN Forums

    Hello All,
When does one qualify to become a moderator in SDN Forums?
    Thanks,
    Jignesh

This thread has so many topics, I'll need to try to be very specific about which of these threads inside of threads I'm addressing.
Let me start with the problem of "inactive" moderators which Ravi particularly highlights.
Gali (and in the past Craig) kept a list of over 650 moderators for the various topics.  Moderators for the most part were SAP employees but about 50 of the 650 folks moderating were non-SAP folks who by merit of their active contributions or by nomination from an SAP employee or nomination by other members of the forum in a particular topic were asked to be a moderator.  Moderators submitted a request form and were accredited by topic experts or other SAP contributors.
In the case of SD for example, 2 of the four names I see on the list are from SAP's support group and are employees.  If they are "outdated" or inactive, Gali will need to ascertain that with her ERP resource and they should be removed or prodded into activity and/or replaced.
As you  can well imagine, keeping track of 650 or more moderators to ensure their "activity" is a pretty daunting task and it is through your comments and suggestions about their levels of activity that we can quality check as we are not subject experts in your individual forum areas: you are.
One another theme here, I agree with those that posted (albeit with a bit of sarcastic humor) that the role of moderator is not so much an acknowledgement and recognition of talents but a challenging chore.  And we certainly salute those who enter the coliseum (you know like the gladiators) to fight the good fight of keeping things useful and clean here.
Now if that chore negatively impacts good contribution abilities of the same gladiators, that really should be examined.  But I also see a very positive outcome of stepping aside to moderate and contribute less directly and that is that a number of those moderators are actively helping to create new "stars" by encouraging and highlighting and promoting the good activity of others.  In other words, they help create new "top topic contributors".  And if they aren't doing that, they should be because moderation isn't just about policing; its also about encouraging others.

  • How to become a Mozilla Firefox Support Forum Moderator.

I am very sorry to ask this here. I asked this here because I don't know where to ask. I am a Contributor in the Mozilla Support forum Top Contributors list. Many of the Top contributors are Moderators. I would like to be a Moderator too. However I don't know what to do to become a Moderator.

Even if the need is there, you might need more total support postings before being asked. I was coming here to contribute for over a year and a half ''(the first year was very infrequent, like once a week for a few hours)'', and had more than 1000 support postings before I was asked. The "counter" was reset with the forum software upgrade back in July 2010, so a lot of us have far more postings than shown now. My total was a shade over 30,000 before, and IIRC, '''co-rel''' had in excess of 100,000 at the end of July. Other contributors counts I don't recall.

    Hi,
Read all what is available about SOA on SDN. This is the best to do now.
You can also practice the configuration of a SAP Netweaver system as a producer or consumer of web services.

  • How to become microft community contributor or MVP

    Hi,
How can i achieve MCC / MVP award. :-)
Cheers, Hemendra-MCTS "Yesterday is just a memory,Tomorrow we may never see"

Thanks for asking this question! Everybody also wants to know this!
Sometimes answers aren't what we want them to be. The process might not be as detailed as we want, but that's by design (for flexibility and other reasons). Since this forum is to discuss recognition, the recognition aspect is as follows: When
you become an MCC or MVP, then you receive the appropriate "MCC" or "MVP" mark.
To find out how to become an MCC or MVP, we should go check out their sites and ask them. The "MCC" and "MVP" marks on here only reflect that the award was given... and the Recognition Points might inform the award. But the award itself has nothing
to do with the Recognition system or the forums. So here's the answer and links for you to find out more information if you want it...
    MICROSOFT COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTOR (MCC)
Q14. How do I contact Microsoft about the Community Contributor Award?
A14. You can send questions to the Microsoft Community Contributor Global Administrator at
    [email protected] (MCCGA at microsoft.com).
    FAQ:
    https://www.microsoftcommunitycontributor.com/faq.aspx
PROCESS: Current MVPs and Microsoft personnel recommend people as MCCs based on quality, quantity, and impact on "online technical communities." Current MVPs and Microsoft personnel then evaluate those recommended on the same factors (impact on
online technical communities) and base the award on those evaluations. If you think they should be more transparent about the process, let them know with the links above.
Tips to becoming an MCC (based on the FAQ):
    1) Make an impact in the community, using tools like TechNet Forums, Gallery, and Wiki.
    2) Become noticed by MVPs and Microsoft's MCC representatives (start building relationships with these folks and collaborating).
    MOST VALUALBE PROFESSIONALS (MVP):
    Become an MVP:
http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/gp/mvpbecoming (if it doesn't open, paste into a new tab or window)
    Nominate an MVP:
http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/gp/mvpnominate (if it doesn't open, paste it into a new tab or window)
Process: After reading the "become an MVP" page, you'll see that the process is rigorous. "MVP nominees undergo a rigorous review process. A panel that includes members of the MVP team and Microsoft product groups evaluates each nominee's technical expertise
and voluntary community contributions for the past 12 months. The panel considers the quality, quantity, and level of impact of the MVP nominee's contributions." Essentially the panel evaluates the nominees and then bases their award on those evaluations in
quality, quantity, and level of impact.
Tips to becoming an MVP (based on the MVP site):
    1) Give quality assistance, advice, processes, scripts, and consultation. Test your own advice and ask first. Experts in your area will be evaluating samples of your community work. You don't want them to be evaluating the one communication issue you had
or mistake you accidentally made (and thus thinking that you make it a regular practice).
    2) Give high-quantity contributions. Be active in your technology's forums and on blogs. The TechNet and MSDN forums are being monitored by current MVPs and Microsoft personnel.
    3) Share your knowledge in blogs, Wiki articles, white papers, and Galleries. You must create your own unique content and help build the community around your content.
    4) Speak at conferences, local groups, and user groups. Speak online in virtual events. Go show your expertise and teach large groups. These conferences and events are different for every product. Go find them.
    5) Become the leader. Instead of just plugging into conferences, events, local groups, and user groups, build them, organize them, and lead them. Bring the community off-line.
So even if this isn't what we want, this is what the programs have made available, and you can contact them for more information.
    Thanks!

  • How to become a Apple dealer?

    Greetings all,
First of all, if this is not the right place to ask this question please move it to a place where it does belong, I wassn't sure where I had to put it.
Now for my actual question: I'm a student that is thinking about what to do as a profession. I live in Belgium and have an interest in becomming an Apple dealer after I graduate. I do have a hard time finding details and specifications on how to become one and the differance between Apple Certified Reseller, Apple Center, ...
Where can I find information about these things?

How & where to start with?Do you have any experience programming in any language? If not and you want to start with Java, look up Java Tutorials on google. Or check out java.sun.com for tutorials and examples that are good for beginners. At least learn the basic syntax and structure of the Java language first. From there you can move onto other things like algorithms and design patterns.
Any dress code? How you dress doesn't make you a better or worse programmer. However, if you work for a company you should follow their dress code.

Apple keeps that very tightly wrapped - select Apple employees and "connected" insiders (people who already have established relationships with Apple). There's no real way to apply or let them know you're interested - they chose who to approach.

  • How to contact a moderator?

Can someone please explain how to contact a moderator? When I click on one of their names I can only see an option to send them a private message, which is not what I need to do. I'm sure I've seen the form before, but I can't see it tonight!
I wish to pass the link on to my brother who is having trouble with a new line installation. He was originally given an install date for a line at his new build house for yesterday, however they sent a text message the night before to say that there would be a two week delay, with no explanation. He is concerned that in two weeks someone will have a look at the job again and decide that perhaps another two weeks is needed. All indications are that this should be a fairly routine job (cable seems to be already laid to front of property), but with minimal communication from BT it is hard to understand why there is any delay at all. Obviously he is frustrated that it will probably be at least a further two weeks following line installation for a broadband order to be placed and processed, and is keen for the line to be installed ASAP. I believe that he would ideally like to place a fibre order, but until the line is in he cannot tell whether or not this service is, or will be, available, and whether or not that service would be FTTC or FTTP.
I presume that these questions would be best answered by one of the moderators rather than the call centre staff?
    Thanks.

The change of method was to stop people passing on the link and to ensure the customers join the forum and post their problem first
