How to best output Shake files to FCP so that FCP likes them

Hi,
I think this post might be better suited for the Shake Subsection.
I have a totally tricked out 8 core Mac pro with 8 GB ram and a 1 TB drive (mostly empty). I'm using the Latest FCP. Recently, I've been editing some HD video that I've shot and have been quite pleased with the performance of the machine/software. However, I am experiencing a weird problem. I also have Shake, which I am using to do some composting and, relevantly, remove a small amount of camera vibration from my footage. (It works great.)
However, any files that I export from Shake, using (as best as I can tell) the exact same file formats and codecs that my imported Raw (unprocessed in Shake) video is. That is: they are quicktime files, Using HDV 1080p30fps, with 29.97 FPS "drop frame" codec. While the raw imported files work great, the files I export from Shake and put into my timeline result in a "Spinning Ball" whenever I do anything at all to them- play them, move the timeline around, cut, apply a filter etc,.
What am I overlooking?
What settings can I use in the Output Node to emulate the "native" captured video of FCP.

From page 167 of the Shake manual:
Shake Does Not Support HDV
Shake does not support long-GOP formats, including HDV, MPEG-2, or MPEG-1. If you
want to use HDV media that was captured with Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express HD
in Shake, recompress it with the Apple Intermediate Codec first.
Actually, that is a bit outdated. Try using Apple ProRes 422 as your intermediate codec.

PDF searches and how to best index/catalog files.

Dear members:
Please forgive me if my questions are rather basic but I haven't been able to find the exact answers I am looking for in order to address my project needs.
I have a folder where I keep all of my PDF files. These are all articles from medical journals that I keep organized using a browser application specific for these types of articles. The application allows me to search these articles but it only looks for specific keywords (title, author name, date, journal name and keyword just to name a few). However, it doesn't look at the content of the PDF file to find words that are contained in the body of the article itself.
I would like to be able to use Acrobat to search these articles and try to find words I am looking for in the entire article instead of being restricted only to keywords. These are the questions I have:
1. What is the best way to index these PDF files so that they can become searchable ?
2. Is there a way to find out if they have already been indexed by the publishing company so that I avoid wasting time by doing it again ?
3. My library now contains approximately 15,000 articles and I expect it to grow to at least 30,000. How can I handle these searches so that performance doesn't become an issue ? Is there a way to ensure that Acrobat can search these number of files without taking a long time ?
4. I understand from the help files that Acrobat can search an entire folder so I don't have to run my search one article or file at a time. Is this correct ? What is the best way to run my search so that Acrobat looks at all files in one folder ? In this folder I have subfolders (subdirectories) ? Will Acrobat look at all files when searching including those in subdirectories within the specified directory ?

Hi Joseph,
1. Acrobat Professional ships with the ability to create full text indexes of folders called Catalog. The indexes generated by Catalog can be used by Acrobat or Reader program to quickly search large collection of documents. Here are couple of documents that will give you the idea:

3. When you use Catalog on an already existing index, you will get an option to either "Build" or "Rebuild". The former would scan the documents and process only the new, deleted or changed documents. Rebuild would build the index from scratch - slower but gives faster searches. You can also schedule building indexes at regular interval using a scheduler.

Use advanced search and select the folder you wish to search on.
This would however be slower than searching a Catalog generated index.

How do I back up files on a HDD that has failed?

I have tried to run it with DiskWarrior as well and this error message comes up
It's telling me to back up as many files as possible but how do I backup the files if I cannot access anything on the HDD?
I really need to get my CV off this. Can anyone assist me with this?

If DiskWarrior can't fix the disk you're going to have to use one of those very expensive data recovery centers to try to get any information off the disk at this point.

I'm working with an editor who has FCP but not PP. I'm doing the preliminary edits in PP and then he steps in and does the more intricate work but again, using FCP. What is the best way to make this work?

Kurt, if his goal is just to trim clips (with or without some length handles), will the EDL handle that?
My issue has been a client who does much of her own basic editing of DV footage in iMovie, and we couldn't find a file type that PP (CS3) liked. And she'd like a file back at times. The resolution has been for her to output to DV tape and for me to recapture. Works fine for our purpose, but there ought to be a better way.
Also re CS4 sharing files with mac/non PP users, did 4.1 fix the QT AME/export issues?

How to write output to file in flash

I want to monitor a specific link. Lets say when it goes down, i want to write the following to a file in flash called link_mon.txt
link down <show clock output>
When it gets back up
link up <show clock output>
I know how to write the applets and use sla tracking for monitoring, i just want to know how to write the output(user defined) to a file in flash ?

What you want to do is not possible using applets. You can write CLI output to flash using the redirect command:
action 1.0 cli command "enable"
action 2.0 cli command "show clock | redirect flash:/output.txt"
But you cannot include your own custom text. For that, you will need to use an EEM Tcl policy. Within the Tcl policy, the code to write the output to flash would look like:

How ro export small (compressed) files (.mpg) with sound from FCP or compr.

I have some dv pal footage that I need to store in in very small files. Then I need to convert it back to dv, for editing.
The quality (regarding artefacts and all that) is not important. The stuff was ripped from DVDs originally and are only to be used as reference.
Can I export an .mpg file with sound muxed into it from FCP or Compressor?
H.264 produces to big files.

Hm, what a weird workflow.
I presume you are trying to edit with this stuff in FCP, so my question is, If you are grabbing media off DVDs, and converting with MPEG Streamclip or some such thing, and then trying to down-rez to edit with proxy footage, how do you plan to use timecode to reconnect to the high-res media when your cut is done?
h.264 can produce to big files or small files, depending on the settings of the file you tell it to produce to.
Consider that the amount of time you would spend converting media back and forth to low-res formats of lousy quality could be much more valuable than the cost of a firewire drive which you could use to convert your DVDs directly to DV, which you will find much easier to work with.

How can I use a file in flash cs6 that I made in flash cs5.5 air for android

I have made an app in in air for android in flash cs5.5 air for android, and I want to edit it in cs6 and play it in cs6.
But if I put Ctrl+Enter I got an error: createWin process failed with error 2: system couldn't find the file. I think the problem is that I'am using air for android 2.6 version in flash cs5.5 and version 3.2 in flash cs6. I have searched the web and found out that you can add older air versions using the sdk manager and I have tried it but first I get the error that the version of the sdk I am trying to install is not valid and after some files that I added to the sdk folder I get this error:Only SDK higher than version 3.4.2540 may be added.
I there a possible way to update the air for android for an fla or apk? Or how can I let my originally file work fine in flash cs6??

If you can´t get a more specific hint why your project can´t compile then I can think of some reasons theis error might occur
1.You had files included besides the swf, like videos, audio files, xml files, that are not present in the place air expects them to be
2.somewhere in your createWin functions there is a class import needed that isn`t present in 3.2 anymore, for example some classes or functions from classes that were valid in 2.6 are not any more in 3.2
3. to achieve better eror logging, allow for debugging in the publishing options and see what specific lines in your code throw the error
4.any air app needs a cert file, this needs to be created once, if you migrated to e new system it might be you never created that file which air expects to even begin the compiling process
once you isolate the problem, report back

Hi Sridhar,
I'm unsure for what you'd need this, but in general there are at least two possibilities:
- manually pack everything into the dir structure needed (documented here: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/f9/561140d72dc442e10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm ), than create a ZIP with some command line tool (e.g. JAR), naming it to .par.
- use ANT to do this; with this, you can even deploy the file, see PAR-File deployment with ANT (EP6)

How to get rid of files on time machine that no longer exist

I replaced my computer several months ago when my old one died. A large amount of data which was in a partition on my old computer is still on my time machine and is taking up a lot of space and forcing time machine to delete backups much sooner than I would like. I don't know how to get rid of it. If I try to delete that folder from an individual backup, I get the message, "The operation can't be completed because backup items can't be modified." Of course, I can't delete it from my new computer because it's not there! Any help appreciated.

The best method is to archive the contents of the TC to a disk.. archive is available via the airport utility.
Simply plug in a USB drive large enough to store all the material presently on the TC, 1TB or 2TB or 3TB.. whichever model it is.
Archive I have drawn red box around.
Once the archive has completed ..
Use the Erase disk.. just the Quick erase is ok.. takes a couple of min and then you have a nice empty drive to start loading TM backups on.

How do I view PDF files on a website without actually downloading them?

Whenever I encounter a PDF document on a website, it always downloads to my computer when I view it. Consequently I am getting left with all these documents that have been downloaded to my computer that I don't want to save, only look at once. It is a real pain to have to go back and delete all these files, some of which have obsure nondescriptive names, after I am done. How do I view but NOT download??

When you tap on the PDF link, the file should open directly on the screen while you are in Safari. You can then tap on - Open In - in the upper right corner of the PDF. Then tap on Open In and select your PDF app from the pop up.
If you do not see the Open In button, just tap on the open PDF somewhere and that will make the button reappear for a few seconds.

I use XML files with underscores in the node names all the time.
In what context are you reading the files? For example, if you're using an HTTPService object with a resultFormat of XML, and you databind an object to the lastResult of the HTTPService, the file gets parsed automagically (you have to setup a few things properly, but it's almost as simple as I describe).
Do you need to manually parse the file? If so, look into the XML, xmlList, Array and ArrayCollection datatypes.
It'll be easier to help if you give an example of what you need to do.
