How to best store images with Aperture's Library?

I do not understand, after all this time, how the Aperture library works. I've done a little research online but I cannot see anything which satisfies me. The problem is that I have a 500GB HDD and its getting full, with Aperture taking up roughly 300GB of it!
I find that I have a library with 317.91GB in it and the folder has 47k images, but my library has over 100k, so are the rest inside the library? Am I doubling up the amount of imagery with them organised in my Photos folder and a big Aperture library?
I'm not sure if I need the two or wether I can amalgamate the two, so if anybody know please let on thanks.

Thanks SierraDragon for your thorough reply, but I can't be using Managed-Masters because 95% of my Pictures are outside of the library and referenced, I have since found out. I wasn't under the impression the default was to store inside the library, I have always saved to the Pictures folder.
I know about the 70% HDD issue (although I thought it was 50%), but what can I do, I can't split my Aperture Library, I wan't everything in one place. Storage on an external drive is a no no because I use a MacBook, also I have only FW400 and USB2, so I know internal storage is best and of course SSD would solve a lot of my problems.
Mr. Endo is advocating the use of Managed-Masters while you keep telling me to rely on a Referenced-Masters library, but I think Managed is better because everything is in one place. Also, I'm had an internal HDD failure before and although I'd made a recent backup with Vaults (I have backed up with vaults since v.2 by the way) and Time Machine, the process of piecing back together the library was arduous to say the least - it was all manual!! If it were all contained inside the library file It would have been simple, right?
As my library is already 317.91GB I am left a little unsure as to why, because I know I have most of my images stored in the Pictures folder (122.64GB) but not sure why its so big just from Reference images and metadata (which is basically text!). I base this on the "File Searches" (Managed/Referenced) which Mr Endo advised me to do and with only 7321 images as Managed the rest (126,422) are not inside, so why so big, my library being mostly JPEG and consisting of 133,743 images??
How can the Referenced-Masters Library remain a reasonable size if placed on an external source like you say? surely it will be the same size anywhere?! You mean my local HDD will be kept under control, well sure, but tethering an external HDD is no fun with a MacBook as I use it on my lap. I think that storing imagery inside the Library is better, I'm not one of those who touches the folder structures in the Pictures folder and work exclusively inside Aperture, it seems like those who use referenced masters are worried about that.
I base my decision on centralisation as, having read the following, I get the impression that Managed will allow Vaults to back everything up, even though I have a Time Machine its easier this way. The only part of the document which I think is opinionated, rather than factual, is the last bit which mentions:
"As a point of comparison; most hobbyists use Managed, most pros use Referenced."
ref: http://aperture.maccreate.com/2010/01/12/tip-0-referenced-vs-managed-files/
..I must be a hobbyist because I don't shoot weddings and edit on the road.
Another site had most people using Managed because its easier to handle imagery and back up, while those who used a reference library did so because of the restrictions of space on a portable and bad habits from the past. Yet I believe that I can manage my library on one HDD and don't fancy the idea of tethering external storage from a MacBook.
The only things I am concerned with now are the the "Offline" and "Missing" discrepancies in my library; which come to 1277 images, I don't know how this happened but I should be able to get them back with my Time Machine backup shouldn't I?
So, if I move to a Managed Library with the built in tool (set to move, not copy) I've been told I might get duplicates, hmm, this is to be avoided, but what on earth is taking 317.91GB of space when 95% of my library is outside of it and in a folder which totals to 122.64GB?? Further, is it an all or nothing affair when engaging in this change or can I do selected imagery at a time?
Thanks.

  • How to completely replace iPhoto with Aperture

I would love to use Aperture for all my image-handling, but it seems iPhoto is hard-coded into the OS X workflow. For instance, when right-clicking images on the web, there's the possibility to save to iPhoto. Same thing thing when doing a slideshow in Preview, there's an option to add pictures directly to iPhoto.
Does anyone here know how to completely replace iPhoto with Aperture?

Hi, you seem to be right, although I've never used that myself, it made me go off and test it myself.
However, you can use the 'save image to <my-downloads-folder>' feature, and then import the images into Aperture. Which is what I've been doing anyway. It's a two step process for sure, but it'll work.
I'm very much like you, and trying to swap from iPhoto to Aperture. I have to say that I haven't actually run iPhoto since I got Aperture though.

  • How do I get images from Aperture into print shop for mac?

    Friends,
I have Print Shop for Mac and Aperture. How do I get images from Aperture into Print Shop? I'musing managed images with previews. Is there any option besides exporting to the desktop and importing?
    Thanks!
    Steve

if you have previews turned on in Aperture and they're all genereated, you can simply drag-n-drop them into any application (just about). drag-n-drop is essentially the same as copy/paste as long as the application is setup to accept "drops" onto its windows.
otherwise, if you're running Leopard (10.5) as your version of Mac OS X, when you import (or whatever it is in PrintShop), you should get a file selection dialog. from here, scroll down the left-hand side bar set of icons. near the bottom is a group called "Media". click on the triangle to open the group, choose Photos, and from here you should see an Aperture icon. click this and you'll see your whole library (or at least the portion of it that you have previews generated for. select the photo you want and viola!

You only need to use the source code to implant these shows there where you want. In my eyes it would be the best that you use first a very new and blank DW file to perform (maybe in LiveView) the one or the other.

  • How do I remove images from aperture?

Totally new to apple and aperture so I apologise if this seems like a somewhat noob question but how do I remove images from aperture (using the latest version, 3.4.1)? Coming from a PC and using lightroom I'm used to being able to remove images in two ways:
    - removing the image from the "library", so that it no longer shows up in the program at all but is still on your hard drive (when I say removing it from the program entirely, I mean entirely, i.e. not sitting in a trash can or some other place where it's still taking up memory)
    - deleting the original image off the hard drive
Is it possible to do either of these things in aperture, on both just a single image or a selection of multiple images, and if so how? I've tried googling this already and am getting a bunch of mixed solutions, none of which have really worked so far, so any answers would be appreciated. Thanks!

The answer partially depends on whether you have a managed or referenced library. Since you're totally new to Aperture, I'm assuming you have a managed library since that's the default.
FYI: Managed means Aperture handles image files and places them inside the library file. Referenced means you manage the image files and Aperture only points to (references) them.
For a managed library, select an image you want to delete. Type command-delete. (That's the reverse delete key next to the "=" key). (You can also right-click an image and choose Delete Version) That will remove the images from their Project and place in the Aperture Trash. They're still taking up space in the Trash. If you really want them gone for good, right-click the Trash in the library pane and select Empty Trash. Poof.
For a reference library, I forgot the exact details since I don't use this type of library, but you'll be asked (or can check a box) to delete the original file from the disk.

  • How do I store images in a jar file to be displayed on a jsp?

    Afternoon all,
I have created a java component which accepts some parameters and returns a string. The returned string contains html tags to display a table in a webpage when rendered through a browser.
I want to be able to add this component to any java web project to display my table. The problem is that I want to use images in my table to give the appearance of curved corners.
How do I store images in my component and render to a webpage?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex

You won't be able to make the install of this library as simple as the installation of a jar file. You can't access the images directly in the jar.
There are a few approaches you can take:
    1 - jar file + resources:
Have the install as being a jar and a "resources" directory which you store all the images in. Thus the images become part of the web application/web site and are accessible. Probably need to allow an entry in web.xml to configure where/what this directory is called.
    2 - jar file only:
Provide a servlet to access the images, which will load them from the jar file, using the ClassLoader.getResourceAsStream(). Requires declaration of a servlet in the web.xml file. Won't be as efficient as having the images on disk, but will keep them bundled in the jar file.
you would generate code such as <img src="myImgServlet?img=.....">

How can I store music in my remote library in my iPad library

I don't know what your remote library is so you will have to explain that one.
Music is stored in the music app and it gets into the Music app via the sync process with iTunes on your computer or direct downloads from the iTunes Store on your iPad.

  • How do I start iTunes with whichever iTunes library I want?

How do I start iTunes with whichever iTunes library I want?
I've created a 2nd iTunes library using the "press shift-key while opening iTunes from the start menu" method given in iTunes help. Now, when I try to start iTunes from the Quick Launch menu or from the system start menu, I get the new library--without choosing it.
Otherwise, the new library works as I'd hoped. By turning off "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library," I'm able to use "Add Folder to Library" (where the folders are in the 1st iTunes library) without using more disk space for the 2nd library. So far, it works just fine for CDs and movies. I'm anticipating an iPad which can hold much less than my iPod Classic.
I have the latest iTunes (10.2.1.1)

    A solution found!
I found where Apple addresses the question. Actually, I had tried this before I found Apple's answer and before I asked the question here and I didn't get it to work. I finally have it working, but the Apple answer is missing a step--or so it seems.
    Locating Apple's answer:
    From the iTunes window,
Help > More resources > iTunes Support Website > iTunes Library and Backup > iTunes Library >
How to open an alternate iTunes Library file or create a new one.
    Apple quote:
1.If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
2.If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
3.If you are using the Mac, open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key.
4.You should see one of the following screens:
    End quote.
As it says, you get a prompt to: Quit or Choose Library or Create Library.
I created my new library by choosing "Create Library" and expected to be able to use "Choose Library" later. So, when I clicked "Choose Library," I got a new window that's titled "Open iTunes Library" (it looks a lot like a Windows Explorer window). I selected (on the sidebar) the old library, clicked "Open" and nothing happened. The problem is likely my inexperience with this type of issue, but, still, the solution seems hokey.
After too much screwing around and a 24oz beer, this is what's working:
    1. If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
    2. Hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu, choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes. (You don't have to have the shift key down until just before you click the last "iTunes.") Don't release the shift key 'til the prompt comes up.
    3. The prompt is: Quit or Choose Library or Create Library. Click "Choose Library."
    4. When the "Open iTunes Library" window comes up, click the desired iTunes library on the sidebar. (Mine are named "iTunes" and "iTunesIPad.")
    5. Then, you'll see a list of items in the right pane. Find the file named "iTunes Library.itl" and click it.
    6. Now, with both the iTunes library name selected on the sidebar and the "iTunes Library.itl" file selected in the right pane, click the "Open" button.
    7. iTunes will come up using the desired library.
    8. Using iTunes from the Quick Launch menu or the desktop will bring up the same iTunes library again, even if you shut down your computer.
    9. When you want to change the iTunes library in use, start at step 1.
Nice about this, is that I would only have to get into the "iTunesIPad" library if I need to add something to it from my regular "iTunes" library or I want to sync to the iPad. Most of the time, I'll use my regular 185GB "iTunes" library (even here, I deselect many movies so that I can sync the library to my iPod).
    Caution:
I must add the warning that I'm doing this because the iPad (that I don't have yet), won't hold even half of what I have in my iTunes library. At this point, the "iTunesIPad" library will take up very minimal disk space since it's using pointers to the regular library rather than copies from the regular library AND it's easy to switch between libraries only when needed. I can't say that this will all work until I try more setup work and I actually use it with an iPad. If someone knows that this is going to cause problems or if they have a better idea, I'd sure welcome comment. BTW, before trying this, I restructured my iTunes library (File > Library > Organize Library > Reorganize files in the folder "iTunes Media.") to bring it up to date and then backed it up on an external drive. The website "iLounge" has an article about the old and new library structure.

You don't use #workspace_images# since that is for STATIC files, not images in a table..

  • Re-attach facebook images with Aperture library items.

I have been publishing subsets of my images to facebook for a while, since way before the integration was built in.
I have several facebook photo collections, which now show up in aperture, but there is no connection between the local library image and the remote (FB) one.
I would like to re-connect the online image to the offline image, without loosing the comments, likes etc that are attached to the online image... I HAVE all the images in Aperture, and they have the same names in FB "collections"....
To date, I can find no way to re-attach the images, i really really do not want to loose the FB interactions, but i really really want to re-link the images to the original... I am guessing i am going to have the same problem when i get to sort out flickr too.
I would also like to get a watermark in them too.. but i guess that is another thread in the making.
Thanks in advance for any advice or handholding to sort this one out...

    Could you clarify this
To shift / update the library between desktop and laptop I have been exporting the library - jpeg full size
If you are exporting projects as libraries then this is confusing.
Is it possible when you first looked at the size (how are you doing that by the way?) Aperture had not finished generating all the previews and when you checked the size again it had?
Have you done this workflow since your first post? Has the library continued to grow? If you do the steps again does the library change size?
You coild get a program like Download OmniDiskSweeper for Mac - it is free and will list break out the Aperture library showing you how large each piece is. This might show something.
However it is possible that there isn't aeven  problem here.

  • How does Pages store images?

I need to understand how Pages stores images. I recently lost a few iphotos due to a disk problem. When I opened my Pages docs, those particular images were missing from them also (and from my backups). From what I've found on this forum, it seems Pages creates its own copies of the images. Can any one tell me why I lost the ones in my document? How to prevent it?
    Thank you!

I have no experience of your problem, but the photos are stored in the Pages files. In the Finder, ctrl-click or right-click on the file and choose "Show Package Content". There inside somewhere are the pictures hidden.

  • How to mark (psd) Images with the Circle Symbol without duplicating them

I would like to import my layered images in Aperture.
The problem is i would like to further adjust them in photoshop cs3 without creating a duplicate.
Is there a possibility to mark this images with the Circle Symbol (for edited with external editor) or do I really have to open each image than close again, delete the master and then the remaining image with the circle can be opened and further enhanced in Photoshop without duplicating the image.
    Another example:
I like to open a psd file within aperture with: edit with Adobe Photoshop CS3.
The Image should open without being duplicated. Then I could drag the layer into another PSD document and close it again.
Right now I would end up with a Master Duplicate which I have to delete afterwards.
I know I could use referenced files and say show in finder but I like managed better,
    also:
Show in finder does show you only one image (I like to do that to 5 or 10 images at once).
    bc

Like I said if you want to get into the programming business you can modify the aperture database directly but I don't know of an easier way with managed masters. You can always just do your workaround to files that you are actually working on and you only need to do it once.
Sorry there is no answer to easier answer to deal with all of them at the same time. At least none I can think of off the top of my head.
    RB
Ps. Lightroom can just open your PSD files but that is an apples and oranges thing. Lightroom is not trying to manage your masters for you in a managed library an ensure that nothing modifies them, if you are ok with that method than referenced files should be ok with you as well, you can always use referenced for your legacy PSDs and use a managed methodology for your new images going forward starting with the source image.
