How to best transfer a rented iTunes movie to your Apple TV 3

Hi,
My parents recently purchased the newest version of the Apple TV. Unfortauntely, it's set up on their downstairs TV on the other end of a two floor house, with the modem / router very far away from it. For this reason I believe, they have terribly long download times whenever they purchase something. My Mom, for instance, purchased season 2 of 'Downtown Abbey' and it took over a day to download. Last night they tried to rent 'Contrband' and they were told they had a 5 hour wait.
I've read that they can purchase and rent movies from their iTunes (which is upstairs in the same office with the router), so it would download much quicker. But the way Apple says to get this on the Apple TV, is to actually plug that device in (how would I plug in an HDMI device to my mom's HDMI-less computer?) and move the rented movie over. This documentation seems vague and sort of wrong. That would work for a device like an iPad or an iPhone, but not an Apple TV.
Being that the Apple TV is on the WiFi and that she's logged into her iTunes account on both devices, shouldn't the Apple TV just read what's rented / purchased on her iTunes and then make it available for her downstairs?  She's not willing to test this theory out yet, because they're being sort of stubborn and are just sticking to Netflix Instant. So before I make her Rent something from her iTunes that she then has no way to get onto her Apple TV, is there a specific way to do this correctly?
Would having her enable the Cloud sort this problem? I don't even know if Rented HD movies go in the Cloud.
Thanks.

Movies rented in iTunes are not available in iCloud.
Enable Home Sharing on AppleTV (under Computers icon) and in iTunes.
Your itunes library should then list under Computers.
When a rental movie has fully downloaded to iTunes you will see a new Rentals row in the selected itunes library media categories along with Music, TV Shows etc available in the iTunes library.
The movie must fully download to iTunes, the computer and itunes must be running.
The question is, will this actually speed anything up?  Easiest thing to do is try it and see.
Many movies are not available in HD in iTunes to rent/buy so an SD download will be quicker but you can tell AppleTV to buy/rent in SD under Settings.
The main benefit will be once a rental is downloaded it won't have to restart downloading if you don't watch and use AppleTV for something else, or start and then come back to a movie.
If the router <--> AppleTV wifi connection is rate limiting for internet streaming rather than the internet connection speed, nothing will have changed as itunes still has to get the same quality rental (SD, 720pHD, 1080pHD) stream from the router to the AppleTV.
SD needs 2.5Mbps, 720p 6 Mbps, 1080p 8 Mbps or so to stream near instantly.
Go to speedtest.net on their computer and test actual download speeds as theit internet speed may be rate limiting, in which case renting in iTunes might be a good idea or renting in SD.

  • How can I watch a rented iTunes movie on my Apple TV?

    I tried to:
    select the movie in iTunes
Advanced>Create iPad or Apple TV version
The "Create iPad or Apple TV Version" menu is not active.
I have Apple TV version 1
    iTunes 10.5.2
    Thanks for any help,

Only Movies you have purchased will show up in "Movies" on your Apple TV. These get streamed and do not require any computer to be turned on in your house.  Unfortunately, Apple has not made playing of rented movies that easy.  art308 essentially answered this at the very beginning of the discussion.  You must turn on Home Sharing on the computer you rented the movie.  In iTunes on your computer go to the top menu bar and under "File" you will see "Home Sharing." Enter your Apple ID, etc. to get Home Sharing up and running on that computer.  You also need to turn on Home Sharing on your Apple TV.  If you have more than one computer in your house, it is probably a good idea to turn on Home Sharing on all your computers while you're at it...unless you have some unique reason why you do not want that functionality active on some of the computers.  To confirm Home Sharing is on, and if you have more than one computer running iTunes at home, look at the left menu bar in iTunes (the new version of iTunes does not have that visible by default, but I choose to have it visible).  Under "Shared" you will see the iTunes libraries that are included in your Home Sharing network-assumeing those computers are on.
Now, when you go to your Apple TV you need to go to "Computers."  You will see a list of all the iTunes Libraries that are in your Home Sharing network that are turned on.  The computers that are off will not show up. Click on the one that contains your rented movie.  Start playing.
I must say...this is one heck of a pain.  This would all be much easier if you could go to "Movies" on your Apple TV and see a listing of all your active rented movies...even those not rented on the Apple TV.  Personally, I think the way Apple has this set up goes against its mantra of..."It just Works."

  • HT201269 Can I transfer a rented itunes movie on my PC to a flash drive?

Is it possible to transfer a rented itunes movie on a PC to a wi-fi flash drive to view on an ipad? How?

Thanks for the help. Although the FAQ cited below does not specifically rule it out, I suspect rentals may not be transferred to a non-Apple device. Is that your conclusion as well?
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.

  • How do I transfer a purchased iTunes movie to the cloud and free up the 5GB from my iPad?

I purchased a movie from iTunes using my iPad. How can I transfer that movie to the cloud and free up the 5GB from my iPad?

There is nothing to "transfer." The iTunes in the Cloud service is always-on. Simply delete the movie from the iPad and it will still be in your purchase history for re-download. However it is strongly recommended that you download all purchases to your computer and back them up locally as the iTunes in the Cloud service is not a backup service and should be relied on as such.
To find the movie in your purchase history in iTunes make sure you are logged in with the same Apple ID used to purchase the movie on the iPad.

Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202 - You can manage your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers as long as you have set the device to "Manually manage music."  -  e.g. adding music from a second computer to an i-device.
Hold on.  I don't know if the above will work with a rented movie.  There's all kinds of restrictions on what you can do with rented movies.

  • I rented a movie on my iPad but cannot move it to my computer to watch on tv via Apple tv. How do I transfer the rented movie to my computer?

I rented a movie on my iPad but cannot move it to my computer to watch on tv via Apple tv. How do I transfer the rented movie to my computer?

I just rented a movie from my iPad2 and tried to play it through my ATV2 with AirPlay and same problem.... This is absurd guys. Apple I know there are copyright hoops to jump through but come on!! The whole pitch behind AirPlay and AppleTV was to make it easy to watch my purchases on my TV no matter what device they were on. Now I've got to hold my iPad in front of my face to watch a movie for nearly 3 hours!! And when I go to the support site I have no option other than to send an email to billing, screw this. I've not bought a DVD since I purchased my ATV2 over a year ago but if you guys are gonna pull this crap then what incentive do I have to continue the use of something that may or may not work the way it was advertised.
By the way, this is the first time I've had this problem because I normally rent straight off the ATV or my computer, which by the way I was considering replacing my PC with an iPad but looks like you guys aren't ready for me to make that kind of a switch.
Don't tell us that a product will do XY and Z then put limits on Y sending to Z.

  • How do I cancel a download for a rented iTunes movie because there isn't enough storage space

How do I cancel a download for a rented iTunes movie because there isn't enough storage space?

Purchases cannot be cancelled, but if you cannot clear enough space to allow the download, go here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store. Perhaps there will be something they can do for you.

  • Apple TV 1st generation- can't seem to transfer rented Itune movies from my Mac to the Apple TV

Apple TV 1st generation- can't seem to transfer rented Itune movies from my Mac to the Apple TV

You need to establish if it was 1080p or 720p HD you downloaded.
If it's 1080p it will not play at all on AppleTV1 - the hardware is not powerful enough to decode 1080p h264 (or 720p above 25fps).  When AppleTv1 came out most items were SD only and with time more 720p HD stuff became available.  1080p content cm after AppleTV 1 and 2 were replaced by AppleTV 3.
AppleTV2 can process but not display 1080p - it is stuck to 720p output.
AppleTV1 could only process 720p max, but could always upscale on output to 1080p!
Your iTunes Preference should determine what quality you are downloading/renting.

You can't if your rented it on your Apple TV - from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657 :

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Check the location setting for the iTunes Store is correct.
You might also try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Restart your router.
If you are still having problems try a restore.

I rented a movie on my Apple TV and now I also want to watch the movie on my Mac.  How do I access the rented movie without having to rent again from the Mac?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you rent a movie on the Apple TV, then it can only be watched on the Apple TV. If you want to watch movies on multiple devices, you need to download it to your computer, where you can then transfer it to other devices or stream it to your Apple TV as well as watch it from your Mac.

  • Increase volume of rented iTunes movies?

I have difficulty with the volume level being too low on rented iTunes movies.  I have tried the following setups with my first generation iPad:
    1) Apple HDMI adapter -> HDMI cable to Mitsubishi EW230U-ST projector; Creative T-40 speakers plugged into mini-stereo jack of projector; volume turned to max on all devices.  This produces speaker volume that is not adequate for a large room.
    2) Same as #1, but instead run the Creative speakers directly from the headphone jack of the iPad.  Volume similarly inadequate.
    3) Same as #1 or #2, but insert FiiO E5 Headphone Amplifier into mini-stereo chain going to Creative T-40 speakers.  This produces adequate volume, though to my ears, the quality is diminished somewhat.  I'm not fond on this approach, because the FiiO uses a built-in battery which might fail without warning during the showing of a movie.
What would be ideal would be a way to increase the volume going out the headphone jack of the iPad.  I understand that this is deliberately limited to protect the hearing of those using headphones.  Alternatively, increasing the volume going over HDMI would likely help - unless the projector's mini-stereo jack is similarly being limited for headphone reasons (less likely, since projectors are usually hooked to external speakers).
So ... is there any way to make the iPad output louder sound with rented movies?  Jail-breaking solutions are probably not appropriate, as I don't want to risk my ATT unlimited data plan.
I should say that if I just play a DVD instead of using the iPad, the sound level from the DVD player's stereo jack is strong enough for the Creative T-40 speakers to rock the room.
If I could solve this problem, I would rent a lot more iTunes movies, as it is the easiest way to get a movie.

I followed your procedure and did some testing.  By setting the volume slider to +100%, the movie was louder on my Mac.
I then transferred the movie to my iPad and took my equipment to the facility where I play movies. I didn't have a pristine rental copy to test against, so I used my own DVD copy of the movie.  This is what I found:
    A) The best and strongest sound was when the the T40 speakers were directly connected to the DVD player's RCA sound jacks and the video was coming thru the hdmi to the projector.
    B) The worst (quietest) sound was when the speakers took their input from the mini-stereo jack of the projector, with the video and sound coming from the dvd player thru hdmi.
    C) I compared this with the +100% sound-increased movie rental running on my iPad, with hdmi connection to the projector and sound coming from the mini-stereo jack of the projector to the T40 speakers.  This was definitely much louder than "B" above.  So I can safely say that the sound boost performed on the rental movie on my Mac did copy over to the iPad.
    D) Unfortunately, even "C" above is not loud enough for this room.  But if I added the FiiO amp to "C", then there was plenty of sound - though not as pleasant (or simple) as "A" above.
I wonder if there is some way to get more than the +100% sound boost in iTunes?
I think it is unfortunate that renting a digital movie is fraught with such difficulty. It should be possible to adjust the sound as needed - and preferably on the iPad!  Otherwise, we are just going to keep renting DVDs.

Have you paired your Apple Tv with your iTunes account?  That's how rentals and purchases are billed.  If, however, you have already done that it is possible that there is a glitch in the system.  I've had that happen occasionally and it usually goes away if I reset Apple Tv.  On one occasion that I didn't work so I had to go to iTunes and deauthorize and then authorize this computer.  Also, check to see if your Home Sharing is on (under File in iTunes).  Hope that helps.
