How to blend colours in 2 layers?

Hi,
I am new to Photoshop and my question may be basic but I couldn't figure it out myself. I have an image with perfectly deep-blue sky and I want to paste on it a pine tree from another image with a pale sky around and between the branches. When I want to blend both skies, I cannot do it successfully because I cannot select all of the pale sky in between the pine tree branches and needles. How do I make my new image look natural?

Welcome to the forum.
The terms that should help you locate resorces in the Help files and tutorials will be:
Mask
Selection
Layer Mask
Composite
and probably a few dozen, that are not clicking in my feeble brain right now.
One good place to look, after the Help files, would be Dr.Russell Brown's PS site.
Good luck,
Hunt

What happens if you select both the grunge and the image and in the Transparency flyout tick Make Opacity Mask? You may try different ticking/unticking and colours.

  • "Linearize Workspace" or "Blend colours using 1.0 gamma"...?

At the moment I'm working on a HD show.  The animation is from Flash, Maya aswell as live action/photographic still BGs.  We're a little way into the production (first pass at first 2 episodes) and are adhereing to the "tech specs" sent to us by the commisioning studio.  Right now we're comping in 16bits with no colour management but it occurred to me (after reading Stu "The DV Rebel" Maschwitz recent musings) that because we're doing such heavy compositing on this show that we should be working in a Linear HD Rec 709 profile and then output to HD Rec 709.  Most likely TIFFs.  Personally I think the 3D composites will perform much better in a "properly linear" colour space rather than just blending colours using 1.0 gamma.
My question is speed related I guess.  Because there's such a quick turnaround on this show I'm conscious of delaying an already fairly complicated comp stage (at least for any TV I've ever done).  Would I be better off just selecting the"Blend colours using 1.0 gamma" option and staying in straight unmanaged 16bit project or going all out and working linear and setting my workspace to HD Rec 709?  Are there any major delays working linear?  Are the longer comp times justifiable with the better quality output?
Of course I don't want to mention this to anyone in the studio because the moment I say "oh yeah linear gives way higher quality results" they're automatically gonna go "well screw the schedule and go linear mah boy!" and won't understand/care about any of the arguments I put to them about adding to our considerable workload.  I'm as enthusiastic about this show as the next guy, and want it to look as good as it possibly can but not at the expense of my teams sanity.
    Any comments greatly appreciated.

There is a white paper describing the process here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/aftereffects/articles/color_management_workflow.html.
Though what you are asking for is judgement if it makes sense for you. Things looks different, often prettier, but sometimes it is suprising how adapted you are to the 'wrong' way of mixing colors together. There is a good discussion on the pro's and con's at Stu's blog http://prolost.com/blog/2009/9/30/passing-the-linear-torch.html including a link to a podcast where some people chat about working in linear.

  • How do I copy parts of layers from one AI doc into a new AI doc and keep/create same layer names?

How do I copy PARTS of layers containing many objects from one CS5 AI (v.15.0.2) doc into a new CS5 AI doc and keep/create the same layer names?
To start with, I have one fairly complex AI document with 100 layers,  with several hundred items in each layer. For example, one layer named "Stars" contains  400 separate stars (not grouped), another layer named "Crosses" contains 300 separate crosses, and a 3rd layer named "Text" contains 200 separate words (not outlined).
If I select, by marqueeing a section of the image/artboard, some (but not all) of the individual items contained in the several layers, then  paste that selection into a new CS5 AI doc, I cannot get them to  create new layers of the same name. Instead they go into one general layer (e.g. "Layer 101") as a jumble of discrete, but unorganized objects (no layers or sublayers). In other words, I have lost the 3 main layers from which I selected a bunch of objects.
Checking "Paste Remembers Layers" has no effect on this result. In fact "Paste Remembers Layers" does not remember layers at all. Only if I select ALL the items in the several layers will it paste those layers by those names into the new doc (or create new layers of the same names).
Of course it is a COLOSSAL waste of time copying the ENTIRE document, then pasting the WHOLE thing into the new doc (with layers retained), then deleting the parts I DON'T need, so please don't suggest that as the solution.

No Monica, nothing in Plug-ins other than the standard installed items (extensions, filters, formats, etc.). No 3rd-part clipboard extension on my computer that I'm aware of, either. All frustratingly basic. And my other CS5 Adobe programs appear to work well, at least to the extent that I am familiar with them.
So, from what I can tell of the various comments (thanks to all of you), am I correct in thinking that it seems I can't, in fact, do what all of you can do (that is, copy some objects from some layers in one doc and paste into another doc preserving those same layers by name and organization, and each containing the correct objects from each original layer)?
If so, that solves half my issue - "is it supposed to be possible to do it"; leaving just the other half - "why can't I do it too".
I'll get those screenshots made and posted later just in case I haven't adequately described the issue, or y'all haven't understood it.

  • How can I view both the layers panel & effects panel in PSE 11?

I have PSE11 and purchased Paint the Moon effects.  How can I view both the Layers panel and the Effects panel at the same time?  Was this an option in older versions of PSE that are used in the Paint the Moon tutorials?

At the very bottom right of the editor window click the little arrow to the right of the More button and choose Custom Workspace. Then your panels will behave the way they did in earlier versions--you can drag them out of the bin, see more than one, remove panels from The Clump, etc.

Have you transferred your iTunes library from the backup for the laptop that died along with all other important data to the new computer such as documents, photos, etc.?
If not, all iTunes content on your iPhone will be erased as the first step when syncing the iPhone with iTunes on a new or different computer.
Have you launched iTunes on the new computer?
Is you iPhone avaialble under Devices in the iTunes source list on the new computer?

In Maverick I seem to have lost visability of every folder I had .. please help

They were coloured labels not coloured folders. And they are not part of the Mavericks OSX. You can reinstall the backup of your previous system if you require them
OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version
or perhaps buy a third party app such as Pathfinder

  • How to change blending mode on multiple layers at the same time

I'm using CS5. I have a document with about 70 layers. I would like to change the blending mode to "lighten" for each layer. Is there an easy way to do this?

Photoshop doesn't allow multiple layer editing. That's why the styles are grayed out. Only 1 layer at a time.
What version are you talking about?
CS5 definitely let’s one apply a Style to multiple Layers.
rfcommagere, I don’t know how to make it much clearer:
    • set the Blending Mode on one Layer
    • with that Layer selected create a Style with »Include Layer Blending Options« checked
    • select all other Layers that should have that Blending Mode
    • click the Style in the Styles Panel

  • Do you know how to re-colour a single colour gradient?

    Hi Everyone,
Perhaps this is simple for one of you Photoshop gurus out there. I would like to know how to change the colour of a single layered, single coloured gradient (foreground to transparent) image. There is nothing more to it than that other than I don't want to use the hue/saturation adjustment as it's hard to get a specific colour. Any help will be much appreciated.
    Many thanks

    G'day
It might be simpler to redo the gradient using the gradient tool (G)
Select Gradient tool > 'click' on gradient in top tool bar (click to edit gradient)
This brings up the Gradient Editor.
Make sure the Foreground to Backgroumd one is selected in the presets.
Double 'click' the color stop at the bottom of the gradient bar in the gradient editor and select the color that you want from the color picker.
You can also play around with the other opacity and color stops.
Then drag and use the gradient tool.
    regards
    John

  • How Can You Bring Illustrator Cs5 Layers into Photoshop Cs5?

Hi everyone, Is it possible to bring Illustrator artwork into Photoshop so that the layers in Illustrator are layers in Photoshop, and so that all the content is arranged as it was in Illustrator.
What I have been doing is bringing in a shape or a group of shapes into Photoshop by pasting them into a layer in PS then bringing in some more stuff from another layer in Illustrator and pasting that into another layer in PS but obviously it's a mission to line up the contents again so it is arranged like it was in Illustrator in the first place.
    Any help appreciated
    thanks Gareth

No, it doesn't say how to do it there
Well, then you probably haven't read carefully enough about what can be set up when exporting as .psd in Illustrator.
When you export as .psd there are several export options about preserving layers. As mentioned, there are some restrictions.
But tell me, what is unclear about the following quote?
    Write Layers
Exports groups, compound shapes, nested layers, and slices as separate, editable Photoshop layers. Nested layers that are more than five levels deep are merged into a single Photoshop layer. Select Maximum Editability to export transparent objects (that is, objects with an opacity mask, a constant opacity less than 100%, or a blending mode other than Normal) as live, editable Photoshop layers.
    Preserve Text Editability
Exports horizontal and vertical point type in layers (including nested layers up to five levels deep) to editable Photoshop type. If doing so compromises the appearance of the artwork, you can deselect this option to rasterize the text instead.
    Maximum Editability
Writes each top-level sublayer to a separate Photoshop layer if doing so doesn’t compromise the appearance of the artwork. Top-level layers become Photoshop layer sets. Transparent objects remain editable transparent objects. Also creates a Photoshop shape layer for each compound shape in a top‑level layer if doing so doesn’t compromise the appearance of the artwork. To write compound shapes with solid strokes, change the Join type to Round. Whether or not you select this option, all layers over 5 levels deep are merged into a single Photoshop layer.

  • How to blend 2 different exposures?

I made two identical photos with widely differing exposures to encompass extreme contrast. I now want to merge or blend them together so that everything is visible.
The Luminous Landscape at http://luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/digital-blending.shtml has a tutorial that is spot on but I can't figure out how to make it work in Elements 3.
The author has a method called The Painted Mask where the initial instruction to "use Layer/ADd Layer Mask/Hide All" command for PS but I can't figure out how to translate that for Elements 3.
    Can anyone help?

    Jack,
Place the light and dark exposures on two layers, the dark on the bottom and
light on top. Place an adjustment layer (Levels will do fine) between the
two layers. You do not have to do anything with the adjustment layer, when
it opens, just click OK. Now group the light layer with the adjustment
layer. Click on the Layer Mask Thumbnail of the adjustment layer and start
painting with a black brush. That will expose the lower (dark) layer. To
correct any wrong painting you can paint over with white. In this example I
have painted black in the center of the image for the demonstration.

  • How To Copy Colour

I have super imposed a face from one picture into another, but the face looks grey compared to the other faces in the picture.
Is there anyway that I can copy the colour from one of the other faces and paste it onto the face that I have super imposed?
    Thanks.

    Paul,
    1. I suggest that you try to get the resolution of both pictures about the same. Check these in Image>resize>image size
    2. Using one of the selection tools, isolate the face which you want to transfer to the recipient picture. Apparently you have done this successfully. However, refine your selection so that the skin of the neck&face are on a separate later
    3. Then, in the layers palette click on the half white/black icon and access a hue/saturation adjustment layer. Using the hue slider try to match it to the color of the other faces. The dialog here allows one to adjust individual colors as well as a global process. You may have to play with the saturation and lightness sliders. The advantage of the adjustment layer is that you can link it to the face layer, change its blending mode (e.g.to color), and adjust the opacity.

    Ken
