How to "bless" user directories copied to new iMac?

The old "source" iMac wouldn't boot Target Disk Mode, so I put the new Intel iMac in Target Disk Mode, then used SuperDuper to copy the user directories from the old iMac G5 to the new Intel iMac.
How do I correctly set up the NetInfo Manager records for the ported user directories?
Many thanks, Steve

It may depend on the history of the accounts on that machine, but as of 10.4, if you create a new account the simple way (using "System Preferences" > "Accounts") and a folder exists in "/Users" with the same short name, an option will often be presented allowing that folder to be "adopted" by the new account
Some notes:
The process involves a 'chown -R username:username' equivalent, and the 'uid' of the folder contents will be changed to that of the new user (whose 'uid' will simply be the next available number), as opposed to the user's 'uid' being matched to the folder. So if you have some sort of complicated user:group setup for items within the user's folder, or are trying to maintain consistent 'uid' values for users across multiple machines for NFS or whatever, don't use this method.
Also, if a group already exists with the selected short name, you will not be allowed to create the account, with the message along the lines that the name isn't available.
A couple of the things you mentioned reflect how users were configured in 10.2 and earlier. There have been a few changes to the contents of user records in "NetInfo" since then so I think it would be better to let the system create the accounts rather than doing it yourself - unless there are reasons not to, like the ones mentioned above...

Hmmm? A quick google search for external optical readers turns up many in the $20-$40 (USD) range. Didn't convert to £ or include any VAT charges, but you should be able to get something significantly cheaper than £70. That's your simplest solution.

  • How much faster or better is the new iMac... really?

    Hello all,
I have a 20" 2.33Ghz C2D iMac w/256Meg video RAM, and 3Gig of RAM. I understand that many factors come in to play when you compare the over all speed of a computer. How much faster, over all, is the new iMacs over the system I have? Has anyone tested the two next to each-other yet? I am sure the new one is faster in some ways, but is it really lots faster in over all performance, or just a little?
    Apple //GS

    Hi Patrice,
Within Apple’s slim new 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs are NVIDIA GeForce GPUs, based on our new Kepler-class architecture, which helps make them up to 60 percent faster than last year’s models. This follows news in June that Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display uses Kepler GeForce GPUs.
The new 27-inch iMac offers the GeForce GTX 660M as its base GPU, with even faster GeForce GTX 675MX or GeForce GTX 680MX GPUs available. The 21.5-inch model comes with the GeForce GT 640M GPU, with an available upgrade to the GeForce GT 650M GPU.
    http://blogs.nvidia.com/2012/10/big-imac-news-less-heft-more-kepler/
So, any Apps that use the GPU to assist GPU should be much faster.
Though I don't see it listed here, it may be too new, I suspect it may be supported...

  • How much RAM should I install for new iMAC ?

    Hi,
How much RAM should I install for new iMAC* running Logic Studio? It comes with 4 GB - is that enough? (can you run in 64 bit mode..)
    *(The 21.5" 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo)
Also, I was planning to get the stock 1 TB Hard Drive & save projects to an external drive.
    Does that sound reasonable?
    Any other recommendations?
    Thanks,
    Wm Heart

Unless you plan on running huge projects with enormous sampled instruments, 4 GB will do (very) fine. And your disk plan is sound. Choose an external Firewire drive, rather than USB. FW is easier on the CPU and can handle more tracks than USB.
What you should get, instead of more memory, is a (24 bit) external audio interface, if you want to do serious recording and playback.
What type of audio interface you'ld need, depends on what you want to do with it and of course your budget. From decent to brilliant costs from roughly 100 to several 1,000's of europounddollars. Avoid the 16 bit ones, they're worse than the inbuilt audio chip of your iMac. You can recognize 16 bit Audio Interfaces (in webshops) by their prize (often under 100€£$) and the lack of mention of their bitrate.

How to know if your mac is using the latest Haswell architecture processor or not? and how to know the difference between the new imac and the 2012/13 imac?

Sorry to reopen an old post, but I've just purchased a 2nd hand late-2013 iMac (or so thats what the seller said).
I'm always sceptical though, and just wanted to know if there is a way to check if my iMac is indeed the late-2013 model that included Haswell?
I've attached screenshots of the About This Mac section hoping it may help shed some light.
Thank you in advance for your help!
PS - I can't compare to the iMac specs link you posted above because its now showing the late-2014 models.

  • Windows 2008 : How to Restrict Users to Copy file from Shared Folder

    Hello All,
I need to Restrict Users to Copy file from Shared Folder. Please let me know is there any method to achieve this requirement.

If user have Read permission, they can copy it. So actually you cannot restrict user from copy your files if they could read/edit.
Some programs could help restrict users from edit/modify/copy the content of their files such as Office files, PDF files etc as Oscar said above.

  • How do get my songs on my new iMac?

I just bought my son a new iMac..we have only ever had PC's...we have an itunes account with many purchases on it, when I open iTunes on the iMac and enter the account name and password, my account information (name, address, credit card info, etc) is correct, but there are no songs or anything on in the library. I clicked "authorize this computer" and it said it was successfully authorized. I thought if I opened my iTunes account from any computer it would have our songs in it. I am very confused.. How can I get our iTunes to show all of our purchases so we can use the iMac to sync the ipods we have?

You have to copy your purchases from the PC to the Mac, they don't transfer automatically. These pages may be of some help:

  • How do I install CS5 on my new iMac?

I have just bought a new iMac.  My problem is that I want to install my photoshop CS5, which I own on disc.  As there is no disc reader on the iMac, I tried downloading photoshop CC and entering my serial number - which wasn't accepted ( it's the only photoshop I could download, was hoping they would recognise my serial number and install CS5 for me).  My question is:  How can I download/install my CS5 without buying an external disc reader?

You can download photoshop cs5 from here.
Just follow the Note:Very Important Instructions or the download links won't work.

  • How to re-install Photoshop CS on new iMac? [was: Installing]

My old PC crashed and died and I lost all of my files and programs.  One of the programs I lost was Adobe Photoshop CS.  I talked to a chat tech and she sent me a free link to re-download the program.  It download ok, but it will not install.  I now have a iMac and the file download was a Mac version, but it will not install.
The message reads: The software is an unidentified developer.

    What Ned said.
That error/warning is from the new Gatekeeper feature in Apple's Mavericks operating system. It's not from Adobe.
Gatekeeper is supposed to protect you from malware but it often causes more problems for the end user (like this) than it solves.
Having said all that, you will not be able to install Photoshop CS2 (the link you received to re-download CS was actually for CS2) on your new iMac running Mavericks (OS X 10.9+)
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=cs2_downloads
CS2 and earlier versions were written for older Macs running older non-Intel processors. Macs stopped using those several years ago. They now use Intel processors which are not compatible with the older processors.
CS and CS2 (10+ year old software) will only install and run on older (10+ years old) Macs running Mac OS X v.10.2.8–v.10.3.8. PowerPC® G4 or G5 processor. There is no version of CS or CS2 which will run on modern Mac operating systems.
With your new iMac running OS X Mavericks on an Intel processor, your choices are to buy CS6 or join the Cloud and pay the monthly fee to run CC.

  • How to get Aperture 3 onto a new iMac from CD or old MacBook

Hi, I have a common question, but didn't want to post under an existing/solved discussion, so have made a new one. I have an old MacBook with Aperture 3 on it, installed from a CD purchased before it became available via the App Store. I have a new iMac with no optical drive. I know I can transfer files, etc, via Migration Assistant, but I had read that it was better to install again from the original CD. I have read similar posts, which suggested a very popular solution that involved installing the trial version then upgrading it. The supplied link didn’t work for me and further investigation revealed that the trial version is no longer available. I can see my MacBook with Aperture CD over our wifi network, but my computer won’t let me install software via this method. I tried copying the CD to an external hard drive and installing that way, but that didn’t work either. It’s an old MacBook - i don’t have Firewire or Thunderbolt ports. Is Migration Assistant my only option - apart from buying an optical drive?
    Thanks!
    bp

Problem solved using this to access the optical drive on my MacBook....http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5287
So far has worked a treat. Just updating Aperture 3 to the latest version via the App store and all should be well.

  • User interface corrupted on new iMac 24

    Hi,
Does anyone else experienced graphic corruptions on 10.5 with a brand new iMac 24?
By corruption I mean dock bottom becoming black, black rectangles in icons, images scrambled, etc...
    Thanks.

After logging in as a root user, everything is fine, so the corruption must be in the user folder. I noticed a process that was having trouble running called Screenreader, it was marked in red and I couldn't make it quit. Maybe that is the problem. I'm trying to replace my user folders from a backup.
