How to boost Macbook performance

Hello,
Many thanks in advance for your help. I have a white Macbook purchased in October 2008. The spec is:
2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
120 Gig HD
It's been great so far, but later in the year I'm changing job and they use (horrors!) Wintel. I'd like to keep my Mac to use for the majority of the time, and then switch over to Windows when necessary but I'm worried about the potential slowdown. I'll be using Adobe Premiere Pro on Windows for occasional use, as well as other CS applications, but I'd like to switch back to the Mac whenever possible.
Might it be worth changing the hard drive and boosting the RAM to 4 gig? Is there anything else I should consider to squeeze every inch of juice out of my trusty white Macbook that I can't afford to update for another year or so?
Thanks again,
Jonathan.

The RAM and the hard drive upgrade are excellent ideas....with a 120Gb drive that I would expect to be at least half full by now a 320Gb would help....and doubling the RAM will make a difference also....
When I first bought my MacBook it came with 2Gb of RAM and a 160Gb hard drive....I also bought a new Hitachi 200Gb 7200 rpm drive and a 4Gb kit for the RAM...waited about a week (to see how the MacBook performed stock)....then installed the upgrades...well worth the investment...

  • Does anyone know how to boost mac performance?

    Hey,
    After installing OS X Yosemite on my mac, I began to notice some decrease in performance. Do you guys have any tips and recommendations on how I could fix this issue please?
    Thanks!

    Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
    For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? Did you change anything else just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • How to Improve the Performance of SQL Server and/or the hardware it resides on?

    There's a particular stored procedure I call from my ASP.NET 4.0 Web Forms app that generates the data for a report.  Using SQL Server Management Studio, I did some benchmarking today and found some interesting results:
    FYI SQL Server Express 2014 and the same DB reside on both computers involved with the test:
    My laptop is a 3 year old i7 computer with 8GB of RAM.  It's fine but one would no longer consider it a "speed demon" compared to what's available today.  The query consistently took 30 - 33 seconds.
    My client's server has an Intel Xeon 5670 Processor and 12GB of RAM.  That seems like pretty good specs.  However, the query consistently took between 120 - 135 seconds to complete ... about 4 times what my laptop did!
    I was very surprised by how slow the server was.  Considering that it's also set to host IIS to run my web app, this is a major concern for me.
    If you were in my shoes, what would be the top 3 - 5 things you'd recommend looking at on the server and/or SQL Server to try to boost its performance?
    Robert

    What else runs on the server besides IIS and SQL ? Is it used for other things except the database and IIS ?
    Is IIS causing a lot of I/O or CPU usage ?
    Is there a max limit set for memory usage on SQL Server ? There SHOULD be and since you're using IIS too you need to keep more memory free for that too.
    How is the memory pressure (check PLE counter) and post results.
    SELECT [cntr_value] FROM sys.dm_os_performance_counters WHERE [object_name] LIKE '%Buffer Manager%' AND [counter_name] = 'Page life expectancy'
    Check the error log and the event viewer maybe something bad there.
    Check the indexes for fragmenation, see if the statistics are up to date (and enable trace flag 2371 if you have large tables > 1 million rows)
    Is there an antivirus present on the server ? Do you have SQL processes/services/directories as exceptions ?
    There are lot of unknowns, you should run at least profiler and post results to see what goes on while you're having slow responses.

  • Is the 3.06 GHz iMac good enough for gaming? How good is the performance?

    The primary difference between the two cheapest iMacs is the graphics card and the 500 GB hard drive increase. The hard drive upgrade can be ignored for a moment, since the worst case scenario is I buy an external 500 GB hard drive for $50. For the graphics card, though, how big of a performance boost would I get from upgrading to the next graphics card, which would be going from the ATI Radeon HD 4670 with 256MB to the ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 512MB? Is the 256MB probably going to be sufficient to last at least four years, or should I just pay the extra $300 or so to upgrade to the 512 MB? The market price difference between the two models is about $50 at the moment.
    I have a MBP right now as you can see in my signature; as it's four years old already, gaming-wise, it can't really play the latest games anymore. It's capable of playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (not the sequel) at the lowest graphics settings and only getting 30 FPS or so when there's little action, but that can easily drop to 15 FPS or less when there's stuff happening on the screen.
    I don't play video games all that much (let's say five hours a week), but I'd at least like a computer that doesn't need to be replaced too soon, either, so I'm currently on the fence between these two models. I definitely don't want to go the next step and get a 27" iMac, though, since I already have a 21" monitor and so getting an extra 21" iMac would fit best with it, and I'm happy with the size as it is as I usually use my computer for programming and such.

    Not even the top end card included in the 27" models is going to last 4 years, so you may as well rule out the iMac right now. You're going to want something a bit more user-friendly on the upgrade front. So, that limits you to the Mac Pro if you want to stay with Apple products. Otherwise, you're going to want to build your own PC so you can build in some modularity.

  • Trying boost the performance of RMAN on AIX5L

    Hi all,
    I need to find the best "number" for my test environment:
    I'm looking for opinions based on knowledge of who has experience with RMAN.
    I'm trying find better numbers of channels, maxopenfiles and additional parameters.
    I accept the recommendation of changing the parameters of Operating System or Database
    Environment Info:
    DB:  10.2.0.5
    ASM: 10.2.0.5
    OS:  AIX 5L
    CPUs: 16
    DISKGROUP: 1 (with 16 ASMDISK)
    Adapter: 4 HBA (4GBIT)I want to find out what the maximum rate that can be achieved, then this test I will use only "BACKUP VALIDATE" When I get the best number i'll go to TSM the backup will be done via LAN-FREE.
    Below the results of the tests using BACKUP VALIDATE:
    =====================================================
    1° Test
    Database Parameter
      backup_tape_io_slaves=TRUE
      dbwr_io_slaves=0
      db_writer_processes=6
      tape_asynch_io= TRUE
      disk_asynch_io= TRUE
    RMAN Parameter
      4 Channel
      4 MAXOPENFILES for each Channel
    TIME: 01:08:13
    SIZE IN:892.11GB
    RATE: 223MB/s
    =====================================================
    =====================================================
    2° Test
    Database Parameter
       backup_tape_io_slaves=TRUE
       dbwr_io_slaves=0
       db_writer_processes=6
       tape_asynch_io= TRUE

    =====================================================
    =====================================================
    3° Test - Here my best number
    Database Parameter
      backup_tape_io_slaves=TRUE
      dbwr_io_slaves=0
      db_writer_processes=6
      tape_asynch_io= TRUE
      disk_asynch_io= TRUE
    RMAN Parameter
      4 Channel
      2 MAXOPENFILES for each Channel
    TIME: 00:53:01
    SIZE IN:892.11GB
    RATE: 287MB/s
    =====================================================I ran other test with 2 Channels and 3 MAXOPENFILES and perfomance was like 3° Test - about 54 minutes
    I could not understand why using the maximum of 2 MAXOPENFILES and 4 Channels = 8 MAXOPENFILES is more performatic than if I increase the number parallelism of the datafiles reads.
    My 1° test i can get 784 GB/hour
    My 3° test i can get 1009 GB/hour
    It's a big difference, because this test database (~ 900GB) is small compared with the production.
    What makes sense for this to be optimal number (8 MAXOPENFILES)?
    Thanks,
    Levi Pereira

    Hi Dude,
    Thanks for the input.
    Dude wrote:
    I think the difference could be memory and process related combined with hardware limitations. RMAN will read the datafiles from disk into memory. Doesn't parallelism introduce additional channels and each channel writes to a separate backupset? From what I understand, too many I/O channels can reduce overall performance and cause additional overhead in particular if the media or disk is the bottleneck. On the other hand, If the cpu was the bottleneck, more cpu or processes can boost performance. When processes run on different cpu's, caching is less effective. The same applies to your HBA adapter. I monitored the whole process of backup and saw that the issue was always associated with performance of I/O the RMAN not was waiting for the CPU and also had no waits on disks. I knew I could increase my throughput but I do not know how. (i.e Resources was left over but did not know how exploring them.)
    >
    As a rule, the number of channels used in carrying out an individual RMAN command should match the number of physical devices accessed in carrying out that command. Striped disk configurations involve hardware multiplexing, so that the level of RMAN multiplexing does not need to be as high and a smaller MAXOPENFILES setting can results in faster performance.
    I can use up to 4 Drives (4 Channels) that are LTO-5 that may have an acceptable rate of 120MB/s, so I can go up to 480Mb/s I know it's not exact, there are several extra factors.
    I wish be sure which was the highest rate I could get by using four channels.
    It remains unknown (x =?) this math.
    16 (asmdisk) + 2 (HBA) + 256 (Datafiles) its ok to use 4 Channel + 2 MAXOPENFILES + 12 DB_WRITE
    If I knew the math to find the ideal number of channels and maxopenfiles would be my great discovery.
    I guess you already checked the Tuning Backup and Recovery chapter of the Database Backup and Recovery Advanced User's Guide, which also shows that you can use the V$BACKUP_SYNC_IO and V$BACKUP_ASYNC_IO views to determine the source of backup or restore bottlenecks and to see detailed progress of backup jobs. http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/rcmtunin.htm#i1006195

    I tried one more change:
    On large workloads, the database writer may become a bottleneck. If it does, then increase the value of DB_WRITER_PROCESSES. As a general rule, do not increase the number of database writer processes above one for each pair of CPUs in the system or partition.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b32009/appa_aix.htm#BEHGGBAJ
    I changed DB_WRITE_PROCESSES from 6 to 12.
    My last RATE: 305MB/s.

    One possible solution would be to organise your inbox into folders.
    Its never relly good on any system to have one folder that has everything in it.
    Try going to you web gui for that mail account and organise your folders and move mails from your inbox into corresponding folders for better organisation.
    Several folders containing the same amount of one folder will usually load a little quicker as the folder may not be accessed to download its content unless veiwed.
    So having 10 folders with organised content, and you inbox as an area thats to hold only new emails would work much much quicker with imap.
    Most imap servers will only update the contents of a folder when its veiwed.

    How to connect macbook pro to panasonic hd tv with hdmi cable

    Hi m,
    It depends which MPB you have and the inputs on the TV. The following assumes your TV has an HDMI input which will work with a computer.
    This is if your MBP is from April 2010 or newer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241
    First connect the adapter to the MBP and the HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV, then go to System Preferences > Sound > Output > select HDMI.
    Or if your MBP is older than that and you have a Mini DisplayPort, you can use something like this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/CBLMDPHDMID/
    If it's older than that, for video you need a DVI or mini DVI to HDMI or whatever input your TV has. For audio, you need a 3.5mm stereo mini plug to RCA or optical (Toslink), depending on what audio input your TV has.

    Hi,
    Please give me some suggestions as to how to improve the performance of adobe form?
    Right now when I' am doing user events it is working fine for first 6 or 7 user events. From the next
    one it is hanging.
    I read about Wizard form design approach, how to use the same here.
    Thanks,
    Aravind

    Hi Otto,
    The form is created using HCM forms and processes. I' am performing user events in the form.
    User events will doa round trip, in which form data will be sent to backend SAP system. Processing will
    happen on the ABAP side and result will appear on the form. First 6 or 7 user events works correctly,
    the result is appearing on the form. Around 8 or 9th one, the wait symbol appears and the form is not
    re-rendered. The form is of size 6 pages. The issue is not coming with form of size 1 page.
    I was reading ways to improve performance during re-rendering given below.
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/livecycle/articles/DynamicInteractiveFormPerformance.pdf
    It talks about wizard form design approach. But in SFP transaction, I am not seeing any kind of wizard.

  • Help on how to fix macbook pro 13inch 2010 (cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad)?

    help on how to fix macbook pro 13inch 2010
    Hi, I need some peoples help on fixing my laptop. I have a macbook pro 13 inch 2010 model, and it refuses to boot into either osx or windows. Every time I prevoiusly treid to boot into mac osx I got this error "panic (cpu 1 caller 0x47f5ad)". there is an image below. and when I had treid to boot into windows (bootcamp) I got this error "A disk read error occured Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". I have treid to restart the computer and gotten both these errors agian. The strange things is this deosn't always happen, sometimes I don't get any errors, and it just has the apple logo whith the spinning loading thing happening below (I left this for an hour and it still kept spinning, and never loaded). Other times it just show white whith no errors but never loads, sometime it lets me alt to select which os to boot into (nether work), but other times it just freezes and shows a mouse cursor on the white background. it's not consistent.
    Most recently it has a flashing folder on a white background. I treid inserting my osx disc and went into disc utility but it doesn't detect my hardrive. It may be a faulty hardrive or sata cable but I dont know (I have links below). I was recently (well for the first time), defragmenting my windows partition, it hit temparatures of 80-85C, and stayed at that for several hours throughout the defragmentation, would this have damaged it?
    I have scoured the internet and found many people whith very similar problems to me but none whith the same, and A lot of people saying that if you get the error you should just use a time machine backup, the thing is I don't have a time machine backup. The internal hardrive I am currently using on my laptop is a seagate 640gb 5400rpm (it's not an apple harddrive). every thing else it standard, standard ram and no overclocking, I was running 10.6.8 snow leopard, and windows xp profesional 32bit (split 320gb each, whith about 10gb spare on each parttion).
    It would be greatly appreiciated If any one could shed some light on what I should do. I need the laptop working whithin the week (for my tafe work), but If I have to reinstall the OS's and programs it could take a long0I have a lot of programs and that could take a month. not to mention The fact that the hardrive might be completly fine and it's just a faulty sata connection. but then would I still be getting an error if thats all thats wrong?. and if it is just the error is there anyway I can fix it whitout doing a fresh install, there a error reading document blow but I cannot make heads or tails of it. I also have almost no money to afford getting it fixed.
    also one last thing, I stupitidely inserted my mac osx disc 95% of the way into my macs slot loading drive when it was powered down (off). when I turned it on it sucked it in fine, but would that have caused any damage to the disc or laptop (I cannot eject the disc to check)
    I have images of many of the things I described below. So any suggestions.
    I have also posted this on several other websiets if that helps)

    The problem may be that your macbook is'nt set to 'mirror image' if you go into settings, onto 'displays' there should be an option within, once youre connected, to 'mirror image' if you check this box, then the problem should be sorted, if not then maybe a dodgy cable or adapter.

    I am using Oracle 9i... You might want to start with a feature of SQL*Plus: The AUTOTRACE (TRACEONLY) option which executes your statement, fetches all records (if there is something to fetch) and shows you some basic statistics information, which include the number of logical I/Os performed, number of sorts etc.
    This gives you an indication of the effectiveness of your statement, so that can check how many logical I/Os (and physical reads) had to be performed.
    Note however that there are more things to consider, as you've already mentioned: The CPU bit is not included in these statistics, and the work performed by SQL workareas (e.g. by hash joins) is also credited only very limited (number of sorts), but e.g. it doesn't cover any writes to temporary segments due to sort or hash operations spilling to disk etc.
    You can use the following approach to get a deeper understanding of the operations performed by each row source:
    alter session set statistics_level=all;
    alter session set timed_statistics = true;
    select /* findme */ ... <your query here>
    SELECT
             SUBSTR(LPAD(' ',DEPTH - 1)||OPERATION||' '||OBJECT_NAME,1,40) OPERATION,
             OBJECT_NAME,
             CARDINALITY,
             LAST_OUTPUT_ROWS,
             LAST_CR_BUFFER_GETS,
             LAST_DISK_READS,
             LAST_DISK_WRITES,
    FROM     V$SQL_PLAN_STATISTICS_ALL P,
             (SELECT *
              FROM   (SELECT   *
                      FROM     V$SQL
                      WHERE    SQL_TEXT LIKE '%findme%'
                               AND SQL_TEXT NOT LIKE '%V$SQL%'
                               AND PARSING_USER_ID = SYS_CONTEXT('USERENV','CURRENT_USERID')
                      ORDER BY LAST_LOAD_TIME DESC)
              WHERE  ROWNUM < 2) S
    WHERE    S.HASH_VALUE = P.HASH_VALUE
             AND S.CHILD_NUMBER = P.CHILD_NUMBER
    ORDER BY ID
    /Check the V$SQL_PLAN_STATISTICS_ALL view for more statistics available. In 10g there is a convenient function DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY_CURSOR which can show this information with a single call, but in 9i you need to do it yourself.
    Note that "statistics_level=all" adds a significant overhead to the processing, so use with care and only when required:

  • How to write a perform in Sap Script

    Hi Guys,
    Can anyone let me know how to write a perform statement in Sap Script.
    Thanks,
    Ramesh

    I just took this example from SAP Help
    =======================================
    Syntax in a form window:
    /: PERFORM <form> IN PROGRAM <prog>
    /: USING &INVAR1&
    /: USING &INVAR2&
    /: CHANGING &OUTVAR1&
    /: CHANGING &OUTVAR2&
    /: ENDPERFORM
    INVAR1 and INVAR2 are variable symbols and may be of any of the four SAPscript symbol types.
    OUTVAR1 and OUTVAR2 are local text symbols and must therefore be character strings.
    The ABAP subroutine called via the command line stated above must be defined in the ABAP report prog as follows:
    FORM <form> TABLES IN_TAB STRUCTURE ITCSY
    OUT_TAB STRUCTURE ITCSY.
    ENDFORM.

  • How do I improve performance while doing pull, push and delete from Azure Storage Queue

    Hi,
    I am working on a distributed application with Azure Storage Queue for message queuing. queue will be used by multiple clients across the clock and thus it is expected that it would be heavily loaded most on the time in usage. business case is typical as in
    it pulls message from queue, process the message then deletes the message from queue. this module also sends back a notification to user indicating process is complete. functions/modules work fine as in they meet the logical requirement. pretty typical queue
    scenario.
    Now, coming to the problem statement. since it is envisaged that the queue would be heavily loaded most of the time, I am pushing towards to speed up processing of the overall message lifetime. the faster I can clear messages, the better overall experience
    it would be for everyone, system and users.
    To improve on performance I did multiple cycles for performance profiling and then improving on the identified "HOT" path/function.
    It all came down to a point where only the Azure Queue pull and delete are the only two most time consuming calls outside. I can further improve on pull, which i did by batch pulling 32 message at a time (which is the max message count i can pull from Azure
    queue at once at the time of writing this question.), this returned me a favor as in by reducing processing time to a big margin. all good till this as well.
    i am processing these messages in parallel so as to improve on overall performance.
    pseudo code:
    //AzureQueue Class is encapsulating calls to Azure Storage Queue.
    //assume nothing fancy inside, vanila calls to queue for pull/push/delete
    var batchMessages = AzureQueue.Pull(32); Parallel.ForEach(batchMessages, bMessage =>
    //DoSomething does some background processing;
    try{DoSomething(bMessage);}
    catch()
    //Log exception
    AzureQueue.Delete(bMessage);
    With this change now, profiling results show that up-to 90% of time is only taken by the Azure Message delete calls. As it is good to delete message as soon as processing is done, i remove it just after "DoSomething" is finished.
    what i need now is suggestions on how to further improve performance of this function when 90% of the time is being eaten up by the Azure Queue Delete call itself? is there a better faster way to perform delete/bulk delete etc?
    with the implementation mentioned here, i get speed of close to 25 messages/sec. Right now Azure queue delete calls are choking application performance. so is there any hope to push it further.
    Does it also makes difference in performance which queue delete call am making? as of now queue has overloaded method for deleting message, one which except message object and another which accepts message identifier and pop receipt. i am using the later
    one here with message identifier nad pop receipt to delete message from queue.
    Let me know if you need any additional information or any clarification in question.
    Inputs/suggestions are welcome.
    Many thanks.

    The first thing that came to mind was to use a parallel delete at the same time you run the work in DoSomething.  If DoSomething fails, add the message back into the queue.  This won't work for every application, and work that was in the queue
    near the head could be pushed back to the tail, so you'd have to think about how that may effect your workload.
    Or, make a threadpool queued delete after the work was successful.  Fire and forget.  However, if you're loading the processing at 25/sec, and 90% of time sits on the delete, you'd quickly accumulate delete calls for the threadpool until you'd
    never catch up.  At 70-80% duty cycle this may work, but the closer you get to always being busy could make this dangerous.
    I wonder if calling the delete REST API yourself may offer any improvements.  If you find the delete sets up a TCP connection each time, this may be all you need.  Try to keep the connection open, or see if the REST API can delete more at a time
    than the SDK API can.
    Or, if you have the funds, just have more VM instances doing the work in parallel, so the first machine handles 25/sec, the second at 25/sec also - and you just live with the slow delete.  If that's still not good enough, add more instances.
