How to boot from install disc and do a clean install

No one tells you that you can't restore a TM backup that was done on Mountain Lion 10.8.2 to a new hard drive with Snow Leopard. After many hours with Apple Care yesterday, they were foxed.
I want to now do a clean install on my new hard drive (installed yesterday by an Apple Care serviceman) using my Snow Leopard install discs (10.6.3). How can I do this?
After I have done a clean install, I will set up the iMac and upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.8, which will give me the App Store, where I can upgrade to Mountain Lion and then attempt the restore from Time Machine.
I am just uncertain how to do a clean install.

Would you find a way to tweet or post the following info so that other iMac users who need their SeaGate HD replaced don't go through hours of headache before they get this information?
RE: iMac HD replacement.
If your TM backup is on Mountain Lion and your startup discs are Snow Leopard (or earlier) do NOT restore your  backup after new HD is installed!
First, update OS to Snow Leopard 10.8. This will install the App Store. Note: it will take about 20 hours.
When you have the App Store in the dock, install Mountain Lion. Note: again, about 20 hours.
After ML is installed, restart holding down the option key. Select restore from TM backup and select your data.
I was told by Apple Care that ML makes changes to the HD, thus installing a backup to a previous OS will not function properly.
You can create a bootable backup of ML to a flash drive or DVD when you buy it. Good idea as Apple is not making install discs now for new OS versions.

How did you copy files to the external drive, and what files did you copy? Did you drag and drop in the Finder? Use a clone utility? What files did not successfully copy?
If you reformatted the drive as part of your install, then you won't be able to recover any files from the drive. Reverting back to (reinstalling) 10.4 will not help you.
Do you have a complete-drive backup of your old system?

  • How can I wipe hard drive and do a clean install of Mavericks?

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro that is terrible sluggish, probably from upgrades and semi-deleted Symantec software. I want to wipe the hard drive and do a clean install of Mavericks. I have all files backed up, and can reinstall software.
I think there is a way to do this with Disc Utility?  But don't know how.  Advice welcome

If you have Yosemite installed and want to reinstall it, do a backup,  preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors.  Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

When you reboot, use Setup Assistant to restore your data.

  • K7N2G-ILSR: How to boot from SATA when a raid card is installed

    The situation:
    1. I have a separate raid controller (Silicon chip) with 2 drives on raid 0.
    2. I have another drive (my boot drive) that I want to place on the onboard Promise SATA raid controller.
    The problem:
The bios doesn't include an option to specifically boot from SATA, only SCSI. So when I place my boot drive to the onboard Promise SATA raid controller, the system won't boot because it's looking for system files on the raid 0 drive.
Is there a workaround for this?

Well, all my drives are IDE. I did try the SATA RAID using lumberjacker's bios but it isn't stable.
Aside from 3 IDE drives, I also have 2 atapi drives (cdr-w, dvd).
    Here's my current setup:
ide 0 - boot drive (master), DVD (slave)
    ide 1 - cdr-w (master)
onboard ide (sata controller) - (vacant)
    SATA 1 - (vacant)
    SATA 2 - (vacant)
promise raid card (2 ide ports)- 2 hard drives on raid 0 (both as master)
What I really want to do is place my boot drive on the SATA port (using a pata to sata converter), or on the onboard promise parallel port. So that it can have it's own port.

  • How save factory software on T400 and reinstall after clean install of Windows 7

    Hi
I have a Thinkpad T400  2764-CTO Running Vista Business 32-bit  and want to do a clean install to Windows 7 Pro.
Sounds like I can get all the drivers via System Update 4.0, but I'm concerned about how to save/re-install some of the software that came on the machine.
In particular, Intervideo WinDVD and Roxio Media Import. If I go to my Programs folder and copy the folders for Roxio and InterVideo onto a flash drive, and then re-copy into the Programs folder on the C drive after a clean install, does that work?
I've never used Rescue and Recovery on the laptop, and am not sure how it works. Any advice is appreciated.
I'm not sure I even know all the stuff that exists from the factory. Anything else I should be concerned about? Thanks! - Kathleen

Please review the HP software and driver download page for drivers/software that are compatible with Windows 7. Also note that there is a BIOS update for Windows Vista that improves the system's ability to function with WIndows 7. Also read "Alerts" and other information regarding this product and Windows 7.

  • Won't boot from installation disc

I'd like to reinstall Tiger. The installation disc mounts on the desktop and opens. I click on the install icon to restart the computer and boot from the disc and the computer crashes. I have two Tiger installation discs, crashes using either one. I tried it with a Panther installation disc but same thing--crashes. I've tried booting by holding down the C key--crashes. The drive burns successfully and reads successfully. There was no hint of a problem before this.

    Hi-
If the proper version of the OS software, have you disconnected any third party peripherals, especially USB devices?
Could also try a Single user boot (command + s on startup) , and run fsck to see if there is something amiss on the harddrive.
One other thought, from Safe Mode boot (hold "Shift" on startup), try the OS X install disc.
Yet, one more thought, a simple PRAM reset may be all that's needed.

The system on the original install dic is probably looking for the original video card.
It may be possible for someone with the right skills to make an install disc for you with the driver for your new card.
As I recall from my early days of being a Macuser, If you held down a key, (spacebar?), while starting it would open a dialog to take you through a monitor setup.

the disc is spinning and I see the apple on the screen with the spinning gear and after a while it just turns off OR the few times it does get past that point when I go into disc utility it tells me that it can not install on this machine!
It's driving me crazy, please help!!!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I'm not entirely sure I follow you here, home sharing comes with iTunes 10.2, so far as I am aware even iTunes 10.6.1 only requires OS X 10.5.8 or better. On that basis I'm not sure why you think you have a problem.

  • Won't boot from Apple Hardware Test or 10.1 Install disc

Disk utility states that I need to boot from a CD and then run Disk Utility to repair my disk. However, neither CD seems to be recognized as a viable startup disk from either holding down the C key or trying to select it as a startup disk in System Prefs.
FYI, I am running 10.6 and trying to boot from a 10.1 disc and an Apple HT disc with SW version 1.2

There is no way any Intel Mac will run with 10.1 -- it was released before there was any Intel support in the OS.
Every Mac model requires a specific version of the Apple Hardware Test to support its hardware. (If yours is the "Late 2008" black MacBook, the Mactracker database says it requires version 3A147.) Somewhere in the fine print of your original grey system disc set, or on any other grey system disc for any model, you will find the version of AHT it contains, if it contains any version. Unless that version is the same as your Mac requires, it won't work.

Old IMAC with 10.5.6 OSX. Forgot Administrator password (which I had already changed.) Followed instructions as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
Started up from the original OSX install disc 1 and selected "Password reset" from "utilies" in Installer. But HD icon doesn't show up. (Only install disc and admin root available:no good as the support website underscores: Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.).
    What can I do?
    Thanks for your suggestions. Antonio
