How to boot MacBook without Firewire?

It seems as though Apple is phasing out firewire on low-end systems. One of the best things about firewire is its support for bootable external drives. How would this be done on systems without firewire?

I think the partition type makes a difference. What was it - GUID - that was required?
The partition type doesn't make a difference unless you want to install(not run) the OS, or run Boot Camp or maybe firmware updates from the drive.

  • How capture video on my macbook without firewire

my macbook doesnt have fireiwre, how i can capture video from digital camara

You can use most any AVCHD camcorder.  Look for camcorders that specify AVCHD compatibility  (not MPEG4/AVC or H.264 ... it has to specify AVCHD).
If your present camcorder only has FireWire (miniDV & HDV camcorders were all FireWire)  then you will need a Mac that has a FireWire port in order to capture the video.  There is no way to add FireWire to a non-FireWire Macbook.

  • Macbook without Firewire.  How to output to TV?

I bought a new Macbook and now that I have it in my hands I notice that it has no Firewire port.
How can I connect it to a TV to monitor what I'm edditing?
How can I capture DV video?
Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Thanks for clearing that up for us, Zebulun. I was looking around for that answer also.
Here's some links anyway for more info on the DisplayPort:

  • How to dowload DV, without Firewire on macbook??

Any ideas on how to do this?? there's no firewire on the macbook.

There are USB-Firewire adapters out there (I think) but they get mixed results.
There is one such product, but it's limited and only works with Windows so a user has to be running Windows via BootCamp or one of the virtualization products.
Maybe somebody has tried using an external USB drive equipped with an auxiliary Firewire port on the rear to capture footage?
Won't work. Such devices cannot convert between FW and USB.

  • How to boot up from firewire disk?

    Hi everyone,
I just bought a 250Gb Lacie D2 triple interface external hard drive to go with my 15" 1.25ghz G4 powerbook.
I partitioned the External drive into two volumes, one of which I will reserve exclusively for backing up my entire Powerbook hard drive.
I used the software (Silverkeeper) that came with the Lacie disk to copy the powerbook hard drive onto the Lacie disk. When I commenced the copying, a dialog box asked me if I wanted to make the copy 'bootable' I clicked yes.
Now for my question..... How do I boot up from the copy???
I had assumed that if I switched off the powerbook & then re-started it, (with the Lacie disk connected... Firewire 800) that I would then be given the option of booting from either the Powerbook hard drive OR the Lacie hard drive. Not so.... Powerbook booted up as per normal, having 'recognised' the Lacie disk & placed it's icons on my desktop.
Obviously there is a simple step I am unaware of, probably holding down a combination of keys whilst re-booting???
So....How do I boot up from the copy?
    regards
    Ian

Well to be accurate it is not at all "permanent" - a better and more usefully accurate term would be persistent.
If you are updating the OS on it you might want it to persist through reboots vs using the very time consuming Option key method each time.
To go back to the original boot disk or any other one just go to preferences and select the one you want again. Much faster.

  • How to restore macbook without CD

I need to restore my macbook pro without CD's because the mac pro i bought without CD's

Mac's that came from the factory with OS X 10.7 or later have a hidden boot partition called Recovery HD, and also Internet Recovery which allow formatting and reinstalling of OS X from Apple's servers on a fast reliable Internet connection, a users AppleID and password.
A partition is a section on the drive that is another volume, can contain files or another operating system.
Recovery HD is basically a bare bones operating system that contains Disk Utility, Safari, Terminal, OS X reinstaller etc.
Older Mac's that were upgraded to 10.7 or 10.8 may not have Internet Recovery ability and thus have to resort to booting of the 10.6 disk to wipe the entire drive, however they do have Recovery HD partition which can erase and install 10.7 or 10.8 onto the Macintosh HD partition.
A wired or built in keyboard is probably required for any at boot keyboard commands. A PC one will work.
It's hold command r at boot time for Recovery HD, which can erase and/or reinstall the current OS X version
It's hold command option r at boot time for Internet Recovery, which can erase and/or reinstall the original OS X that came with the machine. (it won't install 10.7 over 10.8 and leave your 10.8 files and programs intact, for that the entire partition needs to be erased first)
Anytime you reformat or erase a partition or the entire drive, all the data on that partition or the drive being targeted is lost permanently and only in some cases recoverable with expensive time and software.
If you have a Mac that originally came with 10.4, 10.5, or 10.6-10.6.2 from the factory, then you can use the 10.6.3 white Snow Leopard retail disks Apple sells online (sans iLife, but can be reinstalled via the 10.5 disks or using Pacifist from CharlesSoft)
If you have a Mac that originally came with 10.6.3 or later, then you have to order machine specific 10.6 disks from Apple.
You can't order 10.4 or 10.5 disks, Apple doesn't support those OS X versions anymore for anything, even security updates, but they can be found on eBay etc.
If you dont' know what operating system originally came with your machine, you can install MacTracker and use the Apple Menu > About this Mac > More information to look for the model, like "MacBook Pro 4,1" and search for it there. If your Mac is not booting, you can find the serial number of your Mac and enter it into a online database that will tell you the model of the Mac.
To boot from a disk, hold the c or option/alt keys while booting the computer, choose the disk and click the arrow.
If you want to erase and install OS X fresh, with no files or programs, like to sell the machine without your personal data, then you head to Disk Utility (on the 10.6 disks or via Recovery) FIRST, then erase, then quit and install OS X.
If your wanting to erase or format the ENTIRE drive (like a new one), this includes deleting the hidden GUID, EFI and all partitions on the drive (including BootCamp and Macintosh HD) for malware problems (like from Windows 8+ malware in EFI partition or a Linux install attempt) it can be done via the 10.6 disk, or via Internet Recovery only, not via Recovery HD.
OS X 10.6-10.8 have the ability to overwrite their same OS X version with a new copy, keeping files and programs intact, this is to fix issues with OS X and third party kext files in OS X.
Installing OS X over itself in doing so it boots out  third party at boot kernel extension files installed in OS X, so make sure first you can reinstall those software's that do this. Keeping the original installer package when originally installing them is a ideal method to thwart this. This advice is mainly now for 10.6 users who some developers are prematurely dropping for only offering their software for later 10.7 and 10.8 users to force a upgrade purchase, but if contacted, likely can provide 10.6 version installers of their software via email. The third party at boot kext files can be located in the System/Library/Extensions folder if you know their names, and can remove them prior to the OS X being reinstalled over itself, then placed back into that same folder later. If OS X is not booting this can be done by creating a external OS X boot drive and accessing the internal drive folders and also retrieving personal files.

  • How to boot from external firewire drive

Apparently my internal HD on the powerbook has died as it repeatedly gives me the black screen "restart" message and re-install of system software fails.
I have an external bootable firewire drive, which is a "carbon copy" of my iMac, however, it's SnowLeopard not Leopard, so is there any way I can use the firewire drive to boot off of on the G4 or any other suggestions?
Also, does anyone know what Apple typically charges to replace the internal drive in the PB G4? I looked at the video for doing it myself and that is not an option for me.
    Thanks!

The black screen restart message, or kernel panic, can be caused by a number of causes, most which are typically hardware-related, and many times a problem with memory. Try re-seating the memory to see if that makes a difference.
This is a good read on kernel panics: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If you have the original OS X disks that came with the system, find the first one that should say 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Insert it and reboot while holding the alt/option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted, choose the extended test. That might give you some additional information on any hardware issue(s).
You can't use your Snow Leopard bootable drive on the Powerbook, as Snow Leopard requires an Intel-based system.
If it turns out it is a hard drive issue, be aware that Apple will keep your current hard drive as a trade in on a new drive. Some people have private data on the hard drive and have a concern with it leaving their ownership (even if the drive isn't working).

  • COMPATIBLE CAMCORDER & EXTERNAL HARDRIVE FOR MacBook WITHOUT FIREWIRE PORT.

    Good Evening Ladies & Gentleman,
I have a MacBook(13" Aluminum 2008 version) that does NOT have a firewire port, just USB.
    - As far as CAMCORDERS go, What Model and Brand is best compatible with it?
    - Also, as far as EXTERNAL HARDRIVES goes, which ones will be most compatible with the MacBook 13" Aluminum version 2008?
    - SUGGESTIONS WILL BE MUCH, MUCH APPRECIATED. THANKS.

    Hey,
As for camcorders - I don't really think that there is any limitation caused by your Macbook. Perhaps every single model by all the wide-known manufacturers as Canon, Sony, Panasonic, etc. has a USB port, so you don't have to worry about firewire.
As for external hard drives - You can find a huge number of external hard drives that are 100% compatible with all Macs for sure, on the Apple Online Store.

  • Can´t reinstall Final Cut pro on my Macbook without Firewire

I can't install final cut pro in my new Macbook, should it be because of no firewire port.
    It says "hardware problem"

Firewire port is not required to install Final Cut Pro. Take a look at the Final Cut Studio system requirements and cross-reference it with your system specifications to discover what hardware your computer is lacking.

I need to get into my old Macbook, and I cannot remember my password, and I don't have the startup disk.  How can I change the password in single user mode?  My old MacBook is a simple, white MacBook--nothing fancy, from August 2011.  I now have the MBPr, and when I got it, I never bothered to transfer anything because I was so excited about the new one.  Oops...  Thanks.

I haven't tried this but it should work http://lifehacker.com/5681710/how-to-break-into-a-mac-and-prevent-it-from-happen ing-to-you

  • Transfer files from my IMac to new MacBook without firewire?

What is the best way to transfer files from my Imac as listed to a new MacBook. I understand there is no firewire connectivity. I would like to migrate all photos, music, and settings.

I’m sure that specific instructions come with the machine, but essentially:
Use Migration Assistant do do this. You can connect the Macs with Ethernet or even Wirelessly.

  • Any way to boot macbook without power button?

    What do you know?
    early 2009 2GHz MacBook running 10.6.7

    Wrong button. Oh well.
No that's a bit expensive for a macbook. Just need a way to boot up once power button is removed.
It seems to have taken over the macbook & makes it do what it commands.
Or an easy common fix for the powe rbutton would be helpful too.

  • How to Boot DW5 without loading Site Cache?

Is there a way to start/open Dreamweaver 5 without the site cache loading first?   I realize it loads because i have the "enable cache" checked, but I'm in a weird situation where the cache takes six hours to load.  I need a way to bring up DreamWeaver so i can disable the "eable cache."
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
Im runnig Windows 7 professional, if it matters.
    Thanks

the cache takes six hours to load
6 hours to load?  Literally?  How large is the site?  What are the computer specs?  All the latest updates? 32bit/64bit?  Anything more?
I know this isn't a KB article directly related to your problem, but try #12, 4 and 13.

  • How can I capture without Firewire 400 on a new type MacPro?

I mean, Sony HDVs only have FW400, but there are no more FW400 on new type MacPros.
It means that I have to buy a AJA hardware?

Do remember that Firewire ports on Mac Pro's are hub'd together. I'm no 100% sure if it the same on the new '09 Mac Pro's but certainly on the older ones. this means that if you have a FW800 drive plugged in and then plug in a FW400 drive the whole speed of both devices will drop to a FW400 speed. Even worse, if you plug a camera in sometimes hese can run at what equates to FW100 / 200 speed. Therefore your FW800 speed drive will become massively unresponsive.
So if you're planning on digitising, remember to plug the camera into one of the front ports, and the drive into a back port. that should avoid the slow down.
