How to boot PPC Xserve without an internal cd-rom?

I can't believe there's no cd-rom on this server.
Is there any method to boot this thing using an external cd-rom drive?
Trying to install Linux on it.
I've tried Firewire cd-rom, USB2 cdrom, Netboot (netboot almost worked).
Does Apple sell a kit that will add a cd-rom to this box?
I'd like to tell you what it is, but there's no model # anywhere on it. ***.
It's got one hard disk, no cd-rom, and on the back label it says "2GHZ DP/512MB/80GB ADM
There appears to be a space for a cd-drive, but it obviously requires a special ribbon cable to work, and it's not there.

Hi ppcosx_nocdrom-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
Do you have access to another Mac? If so you could try FireWire Target Disk Mode: How to use FireWire TDM with list of machines
A FW CDRom should work if the unit is not locked and presuming the FireWire bus is not damaged.

  • Execute self Test (Press D at Boot time) without the internal DVD-ROM

It's possible to execute the Apple Hardware test (using the Application's DVD pressing letter D at boot) without the internal DVD-ROM, by using an external USB DVD-ROM unit ?, thanks

Not so — I've done it on my UMBP.
Quoting from the UMBP user guide, pages 57-8:
    +To use Apple Hardware Test:+
+1 Disconnect all external devices from your computer except the power adapter.+
+If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it.+
+2 Restart your computer and hold down the D key as it starts up.+
+3 When the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen appears, select the language for your location.+
+4 Press the Return key or click the right arrow button.+
+5 When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears (after about 45 seconds), follow the onscreen instructions.+
+6 If Apple Hardware Test detects a problem, it displays an error code. Make a note of the error code before pursuing support options. If Apple Hardware Test doesn’t detect a hardware failure, the problem might be software related.+
+*If this procedure doesn’t work, you can insert the Applications Install DVD to use Apple Hardware Test.* For more information, see the Apple Hardware Test Read Me file on the Applications Install DVD that came with your computer.+
So Apple does acknowledge that this may not always work, but it is certainly possible on my own 2.4GHz UMBP — which is, of course, running Leopard.

  • How to boot from Lion without disk

Iv'e done this before but seem to have problems remembering which keys to holddown during restart to get to disk utilities Comand R?

Cmd-R doesn't always work.  If not, hold the Option key while starting.  That will show the Startup Manager, where you can select from all available startup sources, including the Recovery HD:

  • Portege R100: Solution how to restore the unit without using a CD-ROM drive

I have just re-stored my Toshiba R100 after nearly 3 years of owning it without a single format due to the complexities of getting a working bootable CD-ROM drive.
This won't help those of you who have a non booting laptop but if yours is booting I used the following method to re-store my laptop with zero problems.
    1. Put the restore CDs into another computer and extract the Ghost image files "01131000.GHO" and "01131000.CRC" from disk 1 and "01131001.GHS" from disk 2.
    2. If your laptop has a second partition then transfer these files to a directory on your non windows partition. If not you will have to use partition magic to create one.
    3. Create a Norton Ghost boot disk from a retail version of Norton ghost and a Windows 98 Boot disk.
    4. Boot the Laptop from the Windows 98 Floppy disk, then swap disks and run Ghost.
    5. Select Local>Local Disk>From Image
    And select the 01131000.GHO file.
    6. Select the only image offered to you, then select the R100?s drive, and finally select the main boot partition.
    7. Hit go!
    8. Re-boot and follow the windows configuration and you're done.

If the C key for Install Disc or R Command for OS X Recovery startup commands are not working, try holding the Option key for the Startup Manager.
see > Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
If that does not work and you using a wireless keyboard, it may have become unpaired and you need to dig up a USB keyboard to invoke the startup commands.

  • How to boot on MacMini's recovery partition without screen?

    hi,
i'm using my MacMini on Mavericks with my iMac's screen. when i want to see the MacMini, i press cmd-F2 on the iMac's keyboard. so far so good.
problem is now i need to boot on my MacMini's recovery partition (to delete Macintosh HD since i'm selling the MacMini). i rebooted from the MacMini pressing Alt key for a very long time , lost the "MacMini's" screen, and THEN i pressed cmd-F2 on the iMac's keyboard.
unfortunately, there seems to be no way to use the iMac's screen for the MacMini for the above mentioned purpose: i press cmd-F2 but nothing happens.
i tried several times but no success.
please note that when trying to boot the MacMini "normally" (without pressing Alt key), i can see it as usual.
i'm really stuck. any suggestions please?
    Thanks

that means that, without a monitor (which i don't have anyway - apart from my iMac's one), i won't be able to see the recovery partition on the MacMini, right.
my main concern is to erase my MacMini's Macintosh HD before I sell the machine.
    as a workaround, i'm considering:
    1. doing a simple "install and erase". that would reinstall Mavericks. hope i can do that USING MY iMac's Monitor. is that right?
    2. then i'd place plenty of dummy data on the empty new Mavericks install.
    3. then i'd do another "install and erase"
please let me know whether such a procedure would make my personal data not retrievable by the person who'll purchase the MacMini.
    Thanks.
Correct. You have to use a monitor to view the Recovery HD's OS X Utilities Menu. If there is a way of viewing the Recovery HD - OS X Utilities menu without a monitor, I don't know how.
And as far as preparing your Mac Mini for resale, it's best to put the version of OS X on that the Mac came with:
    1. Clone your Mac Mini drive to an external drive so you can use your iMac as a monitor. You can use Carbon Copy Clone or SuperDuper (free for full clones).
    2. Boot into the clone from the Mac Mini using the Option/Alt key at restart. And use Disk Utility to erase your Mac Mini's internal HDD. I think you can do a Secure Erase if you're concerned that someone could access files after a format.
    3. This is the tricky part without a monitor. Somehow you need to be able to see a screen to boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Option+R) which boots to Apple's server. You'll see the same OS X Utilities menu, but it's from Apple and you can then install the version of OS X that came preinstalled (e.g Mountain Lion, Lion).
I don't know how you can do #3 without a monitor. And I'm assuming your Mac Mini came preinstalled with an OS X version prior to OS X Mavericks.

I just tried it between a Power Mac G5 and a PowerBook G3 (Pismo) and it worked. The G5 was Mac in Firewire Target Disk Mode. I started the G5 with the T with no DVD in the drive. I started up the G3, and the G5's hard drive appeared on the G3's desktop. I pushed the eject key (on the G5 keyboard) and the SuperDrive opened. I put in a DVD (the Tiger installation disk) and closed the SuperDrive. The DVD appeared on the G3's desktop. I restarted the G3 with the Option key held down, and the DVD in the G5 appeared as a valid startup choice."

  • Booting thinkpad t61 without a keyboard

I'm having the following problem with my Thinkpad T61.
Every few minutes the computer starts behaving as if a few keys on the keyboard are pressed. The keys are no physically stuck, the system just behaves as if they are. This happens sometimes for no apparent reason, but I can always make it happen by pressing any kye on the bottom right side of the keyboard.
I've concluded that the keyboard is faulty and ordered a new one.
In the meanwhile, I'm trying to use my laptop with an external (USB) keyboard. This doesn't quite solve the problem, b/c the laptop still allows input from the internal keyboard, so it still messes up too frequently. I've tried disabling the keyboard, but the Device Manager doesn't seem to allow me to do that. I thought of physically removing the keyboard, but then I don't have a Power button!
Does anyone have an idea for me for how to use my laptop until the replacement keyboard arrives?
Is there a way to boot the computer without a keyboard connected?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

How about unhooking the keyboard cable and taping the end so it doesn't make contact with anything on the board and leave the keyboard on so you still have the power button.

  • Pavilion TouchSmart PC 20-f323, how to boot from a DVD?

My client has a HP Pavilion 20-f323 TouchSmart PC with Windows 8 on it and wants to downgrade and install Windows 7 Pro instead.
However, my first question here is, how do I boot to my Windows 7 Pro DVD on the TouchSmart PC?  I cannot even find a boot menu option to boot from the DVD player.
Any other URLs pointing to this downgrade process would be appreciated!
Thank you very much for your time.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    ****Disclaimer*****
HP doesn't recommend the installation of Windows 7 on a computer shipped with Windows 8, nor will it support the installation of Windows 7. HP will not provide Windows 7 drivers and suitable drivers may not be available for the hardware in the computer. Also, Windows 7 may not support some of the hardware or software features designed for the computer.
Make sure you create your HP Recovery Discs or USB Flash Recovery media before modifying or changing ANYTHING.
You will need to purchase a new copy of Windows 7 with a valid COA and product key.
The screen shots below are from an HP 15t-j100 notepad computer... the options and configuration screens on your computer may differ.
    You will need to DISABLE "Secure Boot" and ENABLE "Legacy Support" in the "BIOS Secure Boot configuration" on the settings page similar to what is shown below, before you can attempt to install Windows 7;
After saving the changes, the computer will request that you confirm the changes... Accept the changes by typing the four digit code and pressing the "ENTER" key.
If are you are installing from a USB stick and see a "Load Driver - a required CD/DVD drive device is missing" message, this is because "System Configuration" > "USB3.0 Config in Pre-Boot" is set to "Enabled". This must be set to "Auto". This should clear up the CD/DVD device missing.
Additionally, as the hard drive is most likely partitioned as GPT, you must boot using the UEFI-Internal CD/DVD or UEFI-USB Key/Drive to install Windows on a GPT partitioned disk. Turn on or reboot the computer and tap "F9" or "ESC" and then "F9" when prompted. Highlight the UEFI boot source you are using and press "ENTER".
I suggest using Windows 7 SP1 for the best intallation experience. If you need Windows SP1, please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" to download and create your own Windows 7 SP1 disc. If the DVD refuses to boot as UEFI, you may need to use a USB Flash drive (may require DISABLING "Fast Boot" in the BIOS) as the installation media. Please download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool to create a Windows 7 SP1 USB Flash drive. Please note that some computers may not recognize a valid UEFI enabled USB Flash drive if it is formated as NTFS and may require a FAT32 formatted USB Flash drive. You should be able to make a FAT32 formatted Windows 7 installation USB Flash drive using Rufus, UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer, or WiNToBootic. I like Rufus, as it has options for "GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer" and "FAT32".
    From the top...
    1)  Turn on the computer and immediately start tapping the "ESC" key.
    2)  When the MENU comes up, press the "F10" key.
    3)  Navigate the BIOS to "System Configuration", "USB 3.0 Config in Pre-OS" and set to "Auto".
    4)  Navigate the BIOS to  "System Configuration", "Boot Options" and set "Secure Boot" to "Disabled" and set "Legacy Support" to "Enabled".
    5)  Press "F10" and click "YES" to "Exit Saving Changes"
    6)  Computer should restart and display "Operating System Boot Mode Change"... type the four digit code and press "ENTER".
    7)  Let Windows 8 boot-up and place the Windows 7 SP1media in the DVD drive or USB port, then log-off / shutdown.
    8)  Turn on the computer and immediately start tapping the "ESC" key.
    9)  When the MENU comes up, press the "F9" key and then select the correct UEFI boot source (Internal CD/DVD drive, USB CD/DVD drive, USB Flash drive, etc.)... Press any key to boot CD/DVD, if prompted.
    10)  Select "Language", "Time / Currency", and "Keyboard" settings and then click "Next"
    11)  Click "Install Now"... check "Accept Terms" and click "Next". Click "Custom (Advanced)".
    12)  You may need to supply AMD SATA/RAID drivers at this time... Download AMD Chipset Drivers (Chipset / AHCI / USB 3.0)
    13)  "Where do you want to install Windows 7???" Select "Disk / Partition" with "Unallocated Space" you created earlier and click "Next".
    14)  Follow all prompts and answer as needed. Enter Windows 7 key when requested.
    Please post the Windows Device Manager's "Hardware Ids" (just the text) for all remaining missing or unknown devices as shown in the example below;
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

  • How to boot leopard from cd?

    Hey guys,
Maybe a silly question, but I need to know how to boot leopard from its insallation dvd, is that possible?
I would like to boot my mac from dvd, so that i can then use the disk utility to partition my internal hard drive, and i think this is only possible if you dont boot from the hd it self.
Obviously I am able to boot from the dvd in the way that it starts the leopard installation, but thats not what i need i guess? at least when the installation start, i dont see an option to start disk utility from there?
so i need to actually boot the system from the dvd, in order to partition "on the fly" without losing the data on my disk.
    I hope someone knows.
    thanks in advance.
    cheers,

    Hi,
Boot from the Install disc. Select the Language. Then as soon as the menu bar appears you'll see a Utilities Menu. Select Disk Utility from there.

  • XServe only sees internal solid-state drive.

    Hello,
XServe only sees internal solid-state drive, doesn't not see any other hard drives.  I currently have (3) 1 TB drives in each bay.  Disk Utility only sees CD-ROM and solid-state drive.
Any ideas on how I can get it to see my drives?
    Jeremy

Some more details would be helpful:
Are these the drives that shipped with the system?
Did they suddenly go off-line? Was it after some event?
Do you have a RAID card?
    SATA or SAS drives?
    What does System Profiler show?
And any other details that might be relevant.
    =Tod
Thank for the reply, Tod.  As far as I can tell, these were the drives that shipped with the system.  The XServe was purchased 2 years ago, and only recently was it decided to bring it up.    I tested the drives individually with a USB-SATA adapter and was able to see the drives on an iMac, so I know they aren't broken.  I also was able to partition the drives using this method.    System Profiler only mentions the CD-Rom and the solid state drive.  The XServe does not have a RAID card and is not connected to an array.  I even tried to boot off of cd, but the still couldn't been seen.
    Thanks!

  • How do i transfer data from one internal tabe to another.

    Hi All,
How do i transfer data from one internal tabe to another.
Can i do it ebven if he tables are different in structure.
    Please Advice.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Saket Tiwari,
I hope the earlier post by kashyap is good enough an answer. anywas in addition to it let me give a detailed
explanation of how you can populate an internal table.
    1) Append data line by line.
Syntax :  APPEND [<wa> TO / INITIAL LINE TO] <itab>.
this appends new line to internal table <itab>.
    2) Using COLLECT statement.
COLLECT is another form of statement used for populating the internal tables.  Generally COLLECT is used while inserting lines into an internal table with unique standard key. The syntax for COLLECT statement is as shown
         Syntax : COLLECT [<wa> INTO] <itab>.
    3) Using INSERT statement
Syntax  INSERT [<wa> INTO / INITIAL LINE INTO] <itab> [index <idx>].
INSERT statement adds a line/work area to the internal table. You can specify the position at which the new line is to be added by using the INDEX clause with the INSERT statement.
    Now coming to your request..
To append part or all of an internal table
         Syntax
APPEND LINES OF <itab1> [FROM <n1>] [TO <n2>] TO <itab2>.
    *     Note:
Without the FROM and TO options, this statement appends the entire table <itab1> to <itab2>.*
    b) To insert part or all of an internal table into another internal table
         Syntax
INSERT LINES OF <itab1> [FROM <n1>] [TO <n2>]
              INTO <itab2> [INDEX <idx>].
    c) Using Move statement.
To copy entire contents of one table into another in one execution
         Syntax MOVE  <itab1> To <itab2>.
                   OR
              <itab1> = <itab2>.
but u hav to be careful because he contents of itab2 will eb overwritten on the execution of this statement.
These copy the contents of ITAB1 to ITAB2. Incase of internal tables with header line we have to use [] inorder to distinguish from work area. So, to copy contents of internal tables with header line  the syntax becomes,
    ITAB1[] = ITAB2[].
Coming to the letter part of your question, Yes, we can copy values between tables having different structures.
    for this we use
                                MOVE-CORRESPONDING <itab1> TO <itab2>
this executes the statement for their header lines. Searches for the sub-fields which occur both in itab1 and itab2 and then generates, for all relevant field pairs which correspond to the
sub-fields ni , statements of the form MOVE itab1-ni TO itab2-ni. The other fields remain unchanged.
I hope the information provided has been of your help.
    Reward if useful.
    Regards,
    Jose

  • How do I install Mavericks without invoking the OSX Server Plugin?

How do I perfrom a clean install of Mavericks from the Recovery Partition without it automatically installing, and then invoking or executing the OSX Server Plugin that ultimately results in rendering open directory operable as well as the server.  I have ignored this continously, but the other day I went into the terminal and typed ARP -s that lists the shortname for the host of my MacBook Pro and it gave a totally different name than what I had given it in the wi-fi network interface under the WINS tab. More importantly, I do not want to install open directory nor the osx server plugin as it opens up more complexity than I want to deal with.  Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.  BTW, below are the steps I performed for installing Mavericks.
    1. Powered on the MacBook Pro and then hit the Option key.
    2. This took me into the Recovery Partition, whereby I went into the Disk Util and erased or formatted the hard-drive.
    3. I then clicked out of the Disk Utility and went into the Recovery Mode by clicking on reinstall the current OS.
    4. I went through all the prompts and the system downloaded a current version of Mavericks.
    5. After completion, I turned on my Macbook Pro and went through the prompts to install Mavericks.
    6. This is all I did, and I didn't download the OSX plugin nor invoke it in the new version of the Operating System.
I just assumed that it was a standalone version until I found the server for osx running with open directory invoked, the server invoked, along
with other components relative to a new standalone version.
Again, my question is simple: How can I reinstall Mavericks without it downloading and automatically
iinvoking the components as described above?

Hi. Because both Mavericks and Windows 8 are still new, they may not be free of error. Apple needs more time to perform more tests to ensure that these two different OS's will work properly without getting in conflicts. If it's posdible, I highly recommand you to downgrade back to Lion or Mountain Lion and install Windows 7 (if you have a copy of it). In my experience, all advises from Genius Bar members and computer articles confirm that  Windows 7 will work on Macs with Lion OS. It should also work on Mountain Lion. Besides Boot Camp, you could try to virtualize Windows OS and its applications by using VirtualBox, CrossOver and other VMs. I already have an Oracle VirtualBox but I would like to try Boot Camp since it allows me to enjoy almost all Windows features that may be limited in VMs.

  • How to Make my Macbook Pro's internal HDD external, when I get a SSD?

Hey, I know there are other posts on what enclosure you can use and if it's a possibility, but I haven't seen any that tell me how I get OS X on the SSD without a disc? Can I download the installer on a flash drive somehow? Also, I am wondering if this really is a good idea, using my Macbook Pro's HDD for a backup HDD, instead of buying one? I have no use for it anyway, if and when I get a new SSD. BTW, the HDD is the upgraded factory 500gb 7200rpm. Also, do you think it's smarter to have a bigger backup drive than internal drive? In other words, I would like to get a 1TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD, and my current HDD is only 500GB.... I am a musician and need a lot of storage for musical purposes. I use Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X, Ableton Live 9, Office, and Photoshop.... My Macbook Pro is a Late 2011 Macbook Pro 15.4' 2.2ghz quad core i7 8gb RAM. Oh yeah and a mother thing is, I think I should get an enclosure that has a thunderbolt port with usb, what are your thoughts?

How to Make my Macbook Pro's internal HDD external, when I get a SSD?
Get an externel enclosure at the same time.
    You can order from OWC
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Put the SSD in the externel enclosure and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner,  to clone the internal drive and all it content to the SSD.  Then swap them out.
Always good to have more than one backup.
