How to burn albums in iPhoto with external DVD drive?

I have the new iMac which doesn't contain a DVD drive... so I bought an external DVD drive and I am trying to burn albums from iPhoto but in the "share" option, the "burn to disc" option doesn't come up. It's as if iPhoto doesn't recognize a DVD drive available, but it is. Anyone know a fix to this? Thank you!

open the album and select all - export to a desktop folder (see the user tip on exporting for the various options available) and then in the finder right click on that folder and burn to disk

How is it connected? firewire or usb?
When connected it should appear in system profiler.

Installing Tiger with external DVD drive, why won't it work??

I have been trying to install OS X 10.4.3 from the DVD disk, last time I upgrade the OS I had to go out and buy an external DVD drive because I only have a cd drive in my mac. This worked fine last time but now I'm upgrading again it just won't work.
I can not get the mac to boot from the DVD, it sees it's there, I've tried holding down c, the alt key, the option key, choosing the DVD as the start up disk and checking the firmware, nothing will work!
I have read other questions of the same nature but I don't seem to have found an answer.
Can anyone help me, please??

I'm having the same problem. My mom has a Quicksilver G4 – four years old, but plenty to run Tiger. The only thing is we didn't get the built in DVD player. We got an external firewire DVD but can't get the machine to boot from the disk in the external drive.
If I try to run the installer I get a (-2) error that Startup Disk can't make the selected drive the boot drive. If I go into Startup I can select the DVD, but upon actual start up it can't find it and I eventually get the folder with the question mark. Holding down option doesn't bring it up in the list and holding down c does absolutely nothing.
Anybody else?

Installing Windows 7 on Parallels with external DVD Drive

Hi. I have a Mac Mini, and just finished installing Parallels 8. I am now trying to install Windows 7, but they system is not recognizing my external DVD drive. I get a message telling me to install from an image file? Not sure what that means. Help! Thx.

I am doing this after doing a full wipe of my hard drive and reinstalling lion.
Previously, I had lion, and made a partition using disk utility and booted from the disk (this time it was from my Mac's SuperDrive which was functioning perfectly at this point in time) and finished the installation completely fine. I then used the drivers that were in my Snow Leopard DVD (I have a Snow Leopard DVD from a previous Mac I purchased).
The only difference between then and now is that I am using an external DVD drive.

How to export photos from iPhoto to external hard drive keeping Events structure (files and titles)

Hello!
I’ve been looking for a Automator application that does this for quite a while now.
Basically I want to have an Automator application that saves a copy of my iPhoto pictures in a folder, inside Finder. Like a backup. Later on, I can save those “folders and files” on my external hard drive.
What I want it to do is this:
1) Export photos from a selected Album or Event on iPhoto. Using as title: “Event name” – “number” (I mean the number of the file: 1, 2, 3 …)
2) Save them in a folder in Finder that I want.
3) Organize the photos in different folders, the same way they are in iPhoto.
The idea I had, was that it would do this automatically every time I launch iPhoto, as if it was synchronizing the photos into that folder.
And then, every time I connect my hard drive, it copies these “real” folders into my hard drive.
Is that possible? If yes, could you help me creating it, or tell me how I can do so myself, or where to download something like it?

It's built into the File Export function of iPhoto 9 (11). Select what every photos you want and use that option to put each photo in a folder with the Event title it came from as in this test of six randomly picked photos:

How to: copys pics from iphoto to external hard drive to share

I scanned about 10,000 historical family photos into iphoto, and now I'd like to gift each of my siblings with a copy of the entire group of photos on a portable memory/storage device. I have chosen to use a portable (external) hard drive (called the LACIE "little disk") so the images will be reliably safe in storage and yet remain easily accessible to the user.
I've never done this before and would be so grateful for any instruction. I'm a little too intimidated to wing-it with a project this big and important to me.
What are the steps to export the entire group to an external hard drive?
One of my siblings uses a PC, and another uses a Mac....does that make a difference?
My thought is that I just have to
1. create new folder on desktop
2. go into iphoto, "select" the pics from the LIBRARY>PHOTOS that I want to share
3. transfer to the newly created folder on my desktop
4. drag the folder to the Lacie drive (already formatted for PC and/or Mac).
5. all done!
Is it that simple?? (please say yes). If so, How do I check to verify the pics are readable (openable?) on the hard drive?

** To clarify, I have FIVE siblings so I will be making FIVE individual transfers...I bought FIVE "LUCIE" hard drives....I reread my entry and I didn't want to confuse anyone about that detail. Only one of hard drives will be used by a PC person, the others will each be for MAC users.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Here's how I would proceed:
1 - for the PC users leave the formatting of the hard drive as FAT 32 (most come that way). If it's formatted for Macs then reformat it as FAT 16 (Macs can't format 32). For the Mac users make sure the format is OS X Extended (journaled).
2 - Add a folder to each little disk.
3 - in iPhoto select the photos you want to send and use the File->Export->File Export menu option. Select the following options: Kind: Original; JPEG Quality: Maximum; Size: Full Size; File Name: whatever of the options you want. If any of the original file names are the same you'll need to use the Sequential option so all the files will have a different file name.
4 - hit the Export button and select the folder on the little disk as the destination.
Do the above for each of the little disks to use used.

How does one move iTunes (& iPhoto) to external hard drive?

How do I move iTunes and my entire iTunes database to an external hard drive? What folders and files do I need to move? Do I need to create a "music" folder on the external drive? I have an enormous music collection -- some 700 CDs -- and I would like to have them all in my iTunes database, but there is not enough room for them all on my MacMini hard drive.
Similarly, I would like to move my iPhoto database to the external drive. What folders do I need to move?

Thanks - I had a look and they are both there on my external HD, the same name, size and date as on my computer, so that's ok, I must be backing them up as you say.
But, they don't have the same icons - the XML file is described as a "REALbasic XML project" instead of "Text document", while the iTunes Library file doesn't have the iTunes logo, and is described simply as "Document" and not "iTunes Database File". Does that matter? Will it matter if I ever need to restore from them?

Setting up iPhoto with external hard drive

I just picked up a WD passport hard drive to try and free up some space on my macbook. I've found the following relevant discussion of how to change the default library and similar:

I also found this which is what I did (move all photos from the originals folder in the library, delete them from the macbook, then import back into iPhoto after deselecting the copy files selection in iPhoto preferences):

I still seem to have a lot of files in the macbook iPhoto library folder that are of significant size (maybe in the modified folder).
Here's my question - what is the best way to take advantage of this external hard drive (and why if you prefer one way to another)? Why do I still have so much space taken up from the iPhoto library if the files are not being copied?
Along those lines, I'm also wondering if I can use this hard drive for my pc, too, or will trying to use it between the two screw things up for either of the systems or worse yet, the files on the external hd?
Thanks much in advance! (I'd also love your tips on getting rid of any memory hog files I probably don't need / use. photos are really my only large files)

I'm afraid the article you refer to is rather full of hooey:
It is very easy to keep your files on an external drive or folder and still have them accessible from iPhoto. We can do this by making a change to the way iPhoto imports photos.
No we don't. Not at all that utterly changes the way iPhoto operates and creates a lot more work for you.
1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
Much better to simply move the iPhoto Library Folder:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Now iPhoto works the same as it ever did, just your files are on the external.
And yes, no matter where you store your Original files, the app keeps the modidied and thumbnail versions in the iPhoto Library Folder.

How to use Final Cut pro with external hard drive?

I have too little space on my computer so I have to use final cut pro x with an external hard drive, but whenever I have the hard drive plugged in and Final cut going, my computer goes very slow. I just upgraded to 16gb ram... but can't seem to run FCP x while an external hard drive is plugged in. FCP just freezes up and I have to force quit.

In addition to the excellent advice to keep your media on an external HDD, you need to make sure that your system (boot) drive has a decent amount of free space if you want to have a satisfactory editing experience. Many people recommend not going below 20% free space. That's especially so for the boot drive, but as you fill up the external, its performance will also slow. Ideally, we would have separate media and backup drives,
You don't need to "delete everything". Rather, you first figure out what needs to be moved. You copy those files to the other drive and then verify that all the files you copied are in two locations. At that point you can delete those files from your boot drive.

You must do this the right way.
• EXTERNAL Hard disk - MUST - be Mac OS Extended formatted
Nothing else will do - for VIDEO !
• The Moving of Event's and Project's - Must be done within the iMovie Application
Folders named iMovie Event's and iMovie Project's - can not be moved via Desktop/Finder - as links back to iMovie will break and can not be mended.
My general note on this:
Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
• iMovie Event's - or -
• iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly.
D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces

If you have got a valid serial number for PSE11 then you can download a trial version using the method given on this page:

The download is direct from Adobe sites but you need to follow the instructions carefully otherwise t won't work. READ THE PAGE BEFORE DOING ANYTHING.
Ideally, you should buy an external USB DVD drive because you will always need a DVd drive as all software packages comes in DVDs.

I am trying to play these DVD's that I have purchased on a large screen Samsung Smart TV using my Apple TV. I get sound but no video. I suspect that they cannot be played using Apple TV. How to install leopard on G5 with Broken DVD drive?

The DVD drive on my Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5 went bad. I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard with a good internal DVD drive. Can I put the leopard install disc in my MacBook Pro then put the Macbook Pro in Target Disc mode, connect it via firewire to my G5 and install Leopard on my G5 that way?

Most Macs equipped with Firewire 400 or 800 are capable of booting into Target Disk Mode (toggle under Sys Prefs-> Startup disk OR hold T when starting the computer).
When plugging a target disk mode running mac into another mac via firewire, the mac's drives (all hard drives and all optical drives - if media is inserted) will show up on the recipient mac. Therefore, use the good computer with good optical drive to put the disc media in, then start it in target disk mode. Finally plug it into the G5 with firewire cable (prefer 800 if your MBP has that). You will then see the drives and DVD, you can even restart the G5 holding down 'C' and it will boot from the CD drive of the other mac (it will try its own first - if available).
