How to burn cd for pc

I am trying to make sure a CD I burn on my Macbook Pro will work on a PC in my son's school.
Where are the settings for this?
Someone told me that Macs always burn CD's that will work on both platforms.
Thanks for your help.

Depends on what you are burning.  If photos - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1257

  • How to burn CD for PC user minus the Mac OS X .ds_ invisibles?

Does anyone know how to burn a CD so that it doesn't include all the Mac OS X invisible files? If I pop a CD into my PB and drag the files/folders onto it and burn the CD (from the Finder), the PC users inevitably whine about all the .ds_store and .ds_somefile junk that goes along with the files. I've used a utility called DS_Store Cleaner to strip out the .ds_store files, but it doesn't strip out the .ds_somefile detritus.
Any ideas how to burn PC friendly CDs? Thanks.

I wondered if one could seek out and delete the invisibles before burning the CD by using the CMD-F search feature (as you might delete normal files from the hard disk within a search results window). That's what I was reporting back on.
You can, but OS X will create a new one almost immediately. Since part of the function of the .DS_Store file is to hold the size, position and listing option for a folder window, it has to be there. Even just to be a placeholder for a default window. They're like bunnies. They multiply too quickly to eradicate.
but I don't think OS9 left as many invisible files floating around.
There's certainly more invisible files overall in Unix, but per folder, they're not much different. OS X uses .DS_Store files, OS 9 used FINDER.DAT. One for each and every folder with either OS.
Believe me, my life would be far simpler and more enjoyable if every one of my acquaintances would just use a Mac.
    Say, "Amen"!
I just spent one hour (!!!) on the phone with the guy I burned the CD for explaining how to move the Word and Excel file onto his desktop so he could update them.
Ick! These are the same people who when you say, "Click on the file...", they immediately ask, "With the left or right button?".

  • How to burn gift CD for friend in Europe?

Hi. I've searched through iTunes Help and this forum but have been unable to find info about how to burn a CD for play outside the U.S. I have a friend in Italy and I would like to send him deadmau5's latest release, which isn't available in EU.
If I remember correctly, European CD players encode the music differently than U.S. players. Is that still true?
Also, I tried to "gift" the music but discovered I'd have to do it through the iTunes Italia store... which doesn't sell the album.
Any tips on burning the CD so it plays flawlessly in italy?
    Best,
    Dior

A friend back in 1999 burned me a CD that played fine in Italy but wouldn't play for me in the States.
Likely he burned it with some funky software.
Is this no longer the case?
It has never been the case.
I thought there was a difference in the way the music was encoded for playback.
No. The Redbook Audio CD standard was released in 1980 by Sony and Philips. As long as the software uses that standard (don't know of any apps that don't use it), it will work on all CD players.
If the CD has extras on it such as files or video, it is not Redbook standard and may not work with certain players, but this has nothing to do with DRM or regions as DVDs use.

  • How can I modify the Fit, Crop, or Ken Burns effect for the entire movie?

How can I modify the Fit, Crop, or Ken Burns effect for the entire movie? I've been having to go through them all individually which takes forever.

You could try  Edit > Select All  then click on the crop button and change the setting from Ken Burns to Fit.
I find that this only works if you do not have the Automatic Cross Dissolve transitions in place.
If you do, File > Project Theme and uncheck the transitions and remove them.
After you have changed from Ken Burns to Fit, you can re-apply them.
Easiest way in future is to set up your project (File > Project Properties) before you start adding photos.

  • Exported slideshow from Iphoto11 to IDVD 7.12 so I could burn DVD for play on DVD player. Fine but show stops 1/2way through because DVD has 2 chapters. How do I eliminate chapters?

I exported slideshow from Iphoto 11 to IDVD 7.12 so I could burn DVD for play on DVD player. Fine, but then when playing on DVD player show stops about 12 way and starts over. Seems there are 2 chapters in show. I wan t show to play straight through until end. How do I elimiante chapters or solve problem. Thanks. Bob Low

    Try this workflow:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Play the disk image with DVD Player and see if you get the same start over half way thru.
Did you create the slideshow in iPhoto in the slideshow mode?
or were you in an album and then used the Share ➙ iDVD menu option?  What I'm trying to find out is if the slideshow in iDVD is a movie file or an iDVD slideshow with the photos from iPhoto? If it's the latter how many photos in the slideshow?

Once the tracks are in your library, you can right-click and use the command Get Album Artwork.  This command will attempt to match your track(s) to the item in the iTunes Store, and get the cover art.
If that command does not succeed, you will need a copy of the art in .JPG format, either by scanning your CD cover, or by getting it from the web.  Once you have the art, right-click the track, choose Get Info, go the Artwork tab and paste it in.

  • How to burn read and write files on DVD

I would like to know how to burn DVDs (image files) with the Read and Write setting. I have changed the settings in Get Info for the image files to Read and Write for Owner, Group and Others and yet when I burn the DVD and try and copy the files back onto the hard drive (to test if it works or not) it won't allow me. When I check the Get Info it says Read and Write for owner (greyed out) and Read Only for Group and Others (greyed out too).
I have also tried to change the status of the blank DVD before adding files and after adding the files (but b4 the burn) to Read and Write, this works but then during the burn process the DVD or burner changes my settings to Read Only.
I am burning with Finder and have tried with Toast 10 Titanium. What am I doing wrong, or not doing at all?! I'm going loopy with frustration!

Kiraly, I agree that the actual problem here might be something else, but as a side issue there seems to be a difference in the way permissions are handled when a file copy is made using Finder compared to when the copy is made using the cp copy in Terminal. At least in my Tiger system, Finder preserved the permission structure, though not the ownership, when it copied a file, whereas cp used the OS defaults.
    I tried the following experiment:
From my test user account "t", I created a textfile named ReadWrite.txt, and gave it Read+Write permissions for Owner, Group, and Others. I then burned it using Finder to a DVD which I named PermissionTest, and then unchecked the "Ignore Ownership" box on PermissionTest.
The original ownership and permissions were preserved on the DVD, though of course you couldn't actually write to anything there:
    xxG5-Computer:~ t$ ls -l /Volumes/PermissionTest/ReadWrite.txt
    -rw-rw-rw- 1 t t 15 Sep 13 18:25 /Volumes/PermissionTest/ReadWrite.txt
I then copied the file from the DVD to the Desktop using Finder, and the permissions were preserved!
    Finder copy:
    xxG5-Computer:~ t$ ls -l /Users/t/Desktop/ReadWrite.txt
    -rw-rw-rw- 1 t t 15 Sep 13 18:25 /Users/t/Desktop/ReadWrite.txt
I then trashed the Finder copy of ReadWrite, txt on the desktop, and made a second copy from the DVD, but this time I used the cp command from Terminal instead of using Finder. This time the permissions were not preserved, but reverted to the OS default:
    cp copy:
    xxG5-Computer:~ t$ cp /Volumes/PermissionTest/ReadWrite.txt Desktop
    xxG5-Computer:~ t$ ls -l /Users/t/Desktop/ReadWrite.txt
    -rw-r--r-- 1 t t 15 Sep 13 19:43 /Users/t/Desktop/ReadWrite.txt
I then switched to a different user account "t1", and repeated the above with the same DVD, first copying the ReadWrite.txt file to the desktop using Finder, and then using cp. The ownership of the copied file changed from t to t1 in both cases, but the permission structure again was preserved in the Finder copy but not in the cp copy:
    DVD file:
    xxG5-Computer:~ t1$ ls -l /Volumes/PermissionTest/ReadWrite.txt
    -rw-rw-rw- 1 t t 15 Sep 13 18:25 /Volumes/PermissionTest/ReadWrite.txt
    Finder copy:
    xxG5-Computer:~ t1$ ls -l /Users/t1/Desktop/ReadWrite.txt
    -rw-rw-rw- 1 t1 t1 15 Sep 13 18:25 /Users/t1/Desktop/ReadWrite.txt
    cp copy:
    xxG5-Computer:~ t1$ cp /Volumes/PermissionTest/ReadWrite.txt Desktop
    xxG5-Computer:~ t1$ ls -l /Users/t1/Desktop/ReadWrite.txt
    -rw-r--r-- 1 t1 t1 15 Sep 13 19:51 /Users/t1/Desktop/ReadWrite.txt
I got similar results when I tried copying a file with Read+Write permissions for all from a USB flash drive to the Desktop, again with the "Ignore Ownership" box unchecked.

    Hi,
Can you please tell us your operating system and why you want to burn them to CD.
For example, on a Windows system, if you just want to save a copy of the images to CD then you could use the organizer. Select the images you want to copy, go to the File menu and select Copy/Move to Removable Drive. Do NOT check the Move option as this would the remove the images from the hard drive.

  • PSE4 How to burn slide show to DVD

I have created a slide show with over 200 photos and added music. After saving it (which took 45 min.) I want to save it to DVD. When I open the burn page it only has VCD option. How do I get it to burn to DVD. I have a Gateway Computer wit an NEC DVD burner. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

    David,
Below is an extract from a discussion I had with others on forums who had your current dilemma. Adobe's answer is generally to use Adobe Premiere Elements to burn the DVD; if you have it installed there is a additional option to burn to DVD on that menu. However, you may have other choices.
If you have a DVD burner, want to make a PSE 3 or 4 slide show that plays on a TV DVD player, and do not have Premiere Elements:
    - create a WMV file using DVD NTSC or DVD PAL (according to your country TV standards) as the OUTPUT parameters
    - then read the doc that came with the software that supports your DVD burner (might be Nero, Sonic, Roxio) looking for a function that will create a Video DVD (note that it must specifically be creating/authoring a VIDEO DVD intended for play on TV rather than just burning a data DVD). Once you find this function, use your WMV file from PSE 4 as the input and choose the software options that give you a video DVD.
Based on my experience and conversing with others on forums, this will give you a DVD that is significantly better quality than the Elements VCD (written to a CD) and but not quite as good as a program that does a slide show direct to DVD. Quality is a subjective judgement, so I am not saying this is the answer for everyone. However, my philosphy is generally to try the software I have first before purchasing additional software.
Notes: For Sonic, I used a MyDVD limited edition that came with my burner. For Nero, I communicated with someone who did it with Nero Vision Express. I don't have any specifics for Roxio.
Notes: Creation of the WMV will almost always take a long time - depending on the number of slides and the number and type of transitions, zooms, pans. Each photo must downsized in resolution, then each individual type of motion must be applied; these photos must then become frame per second video (a significantly different format translation). All this takes time and processor power.

If you need to make a bootable copy of your OS installer disk (good idea to have when you travel) follow this:
How to Make a Non-Commercial DVD copy of MAC OS X
    Making a DVD Image
Step 1. Insert the retail Mac OS X Install DVD into your drive.
Step 2. Launch Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities).
Step 3. In Disk Utility, you will notice a white pane on the left hand side. In the pane, select the Mac OS X Install DVD by clicking on it once.
Step 4. Click New Image on the Disk Utility toolbar.
Step 5. A dialog box will appear. Give the new image a name. I used 'Mac OS X Install DVD'. Select the destination where you wish to save it. Leave Image Format at Compressed (default) and Encryption at None (default).
Step 6. Click Save to begin creating the image.
Step 7. Once your image has been created DO NOT mount it. Leave the image alone and proceed to the next section.
    Burning the Image
Step 1. Launch Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities).
Step 2. Click Burn on the Disk Utility toolbar (upper left).
Step 3. Navigate to where you saved the DVD image created in the previous section. Click on the image file, then click the Burn button. Do not drag and drop the image file into Disk Utility during this step.
Step4. Insert a DVD when prompted and proceed to Burn it. (use good quality media)

If for another iPhoto user or for back up purposes then select the Albums and go Share -> Burn
If for use on a WIndows Machine or for someone who doesn't use iPhoto, then export the Albums to folders on the desktop and burn those with the Finder.
