How to buy/get correct 9.2 disc,

I just bought at garage sale a Smoke/Graphite (see through) colored G3 all-in-one for $99.00. Seems to work wonderfully. Also has a CD burner. So, seemed like a good deal for an extra (needed) computer (I have 6 kids!).
It has 128 MB Ram and OS 9.1 in it.
Of course, came with NO DISCs.
It is also missing, for some reason, Appleworks, which I use a lot.
If i were to buy, on eBay, a disc for this computer so that I can do a clean install and end up with the latest version of system 9 (which will work fine for me, as this computer won't be online or do anything really fancy....I have a G4/and G5 for that), what do I look for?
OR: can I download 9.2 (and latest versions) directly from apple? HOW?
Although, I suspect, it will be nice, down the road, to have a OS 9 disc, as we have all needed them at one time or another.
On the apples works: I've seen AW 6 on ebay , so prob won't have trouble get that done.
Thx!

Hi, Jon -
If i were to buy, on eBay, a disc for this computer so that I can do a clean install and end up with the latest version of system 9..., what do I look for?
A retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD. Those have a white label with a large gold 9, and contain a universal installer. Any other install CD for any version of OS 9.2.x will be a model-specific one for a model different than yours.
Once you have installed OS 9.2.1, you can then update it to OS 9.2.2 via download update (see below). There is no retail OS 9.2.2 Install CD.
You can also get such a disk from sites like this -
http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/index.html
...can I download 9.2 (and latest versions) directly from apple? HOW?
You can download these installers -
Article #120030 - Mac OS 9.2.1 - Download and Info
Article #75186 - Mac OS 9.2.2 - Download and Info
You would need to install both of those, in sequence, to get to OS 9.2.2.
To use the download updaters - the download will probably be decompressed to the .smi file format automatically. If not, use Stuffit Expander to do that for you.
Double-click the .smi file; a disk image will auto-mount on the right side of the desktop, where the disk icons appear. Open that disk image file, and run the enclosed app named Mac OS Install. Once the installation is complete you will have to restart the machine.
The download updaters install only on top of an existing OS of specified version; they can not be used to do a Clean Install, since they are updaters, not complete OS installers.
On the apples works: I've seen AW 6 on ebay , so prob won't have trouble get that done.
There are also some download updaters for AppleWorks. If you happen to use file translation assist via a utility such as MacLinkPlus, you will need to update AW6 to at least v. 6.1.2 in order for that to work.

    Welcome to the forum.
In the DVD/BD tab, just set to Autoplay, and all Menus will be removed.
Hope that is what you are looking for, and good luck,

  • HT3412 I just ordered and received 2 large Hardcover photo books and one arrived with the inside binding messed up. Do you know how this can get corrected?

Have you tried returning a photo book that has a binding problem? I just ordered 2 large hardcover photobooks and one arrived with the inside binding messed up. Do you know how this can get corrected? They were over $80 and it seems they should not be flawed. I would appreciate any tips. lindajenkins

iMac can't read usb card, says need correct codec, how do I get correct codec?

What Mac OS are you running (from "About this Mac" in your Apple menu).
Codecs are usually required for viewing videos and should not affect whether the USB drive mounts. Can you tell us what kind of file your are trying to run from the USB drive? The pre-2006 iMacs this forum covers are no longer supported by most modern codecs

  • How do I get a Windows 7 disc without the Toshiba add-ons?

I recently purchased a Toshiba notebook and would like to set it up without all of the add-ons that Toshiba provides.  My understanding is that the recovery media won't let me do that, so I need an actual Windows 7 disc.
Since a license for Windows 7 is inclued in my purchase, how do I get an actual Windows 7 disc?
Also, the recovery media creator doesn't work.  When I try to run it, nothing happens.
EDIT: I have a Windows 7 disc from another computer - can I install that and use the product key on the bottom of the notebook?
    Thanks,
    rgames

I think the original poster was saying that the Toshiba recovery media menu does not give the option of recovering to a plain vanilla Win 7 setup.  This is also true of other laptop makes I've tried.
If you want to install your own version of Win7 you will have to buy it from Microsoft directly.  I don't see the value in that.
I agree with the first reply.  It's best to just recover your system to whatever the Toshiba recovery media allow, then delete the elements you don't want.   At that point, you can theoretically clone your customized HDD to a 2nd HDD and use that as a backup in the future -- in this case the "recovery media" will be a full working HDD ready to swap out at any time -- and that is my preferred way of recovering any laptop, despite the extra cost (less than buying your own version of WIn7 from Microsoft, by the way).

  • How can I get another "Start Up" disc to restart my old Mac a G4 os x 10.4.11?

Could a "Verify Disc" problem be setting off a "DNSChanger" warning from my Internet carrier, CenturyLink?   DNSChanger Remover tool v. 2 SecureMac 2008 comes up clean each time. I never had a "Start up" CD, and my TDK CD player won't print...

Did you check your Router, I hear some of those can be infected?
If you're using Wifi/Airport, what kind of Encryption is it using?
If Verify Disk reports a problem, try this, but it's not very likely related to the DNS Changer problem...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).

  • How can I get correct English spelling in Lightroom 3 (UK/Canada)

I tried to download the software from the UK site and the Canadian one but it kept sending me to the US site.  All I want is the 'u' in colour!  Is there proper spelling in another version out there and if so, how can I get it instead?
    A 'u'!  My kingdom for a 'u'!

FYI: For anyone else trying the translation file solution.
As brilliantly suggested by Dorin above, I modified a number of 'en' translation files in the Lightroom 3 installation.  I didn't have the 'en' directory under the 'Resources' directory but found that if I created this directory and put another translation file in it, Lightroom picked it up when loading.
All I ended up having to do was to add the specific lines I wanted modified.  For anyone interested, here are the contents of that file so far.  There may be minor mistakes as nothing translates from another language perfectly.

  • How do you get a wndows System disc for nb205-311/W? Need to re-load Windows but don't have disc...

My nb205-311/W crashed and I need to re-load Windows, but don't have a disc. Does anyone know if the laptop comes with one? Don't remember there being one in the box.
Does anyone know where I can get one? I cannot find any way to actually contact Toshiba to request one.
Thanks for any and all help and advice!!!

They don't come with a physical disk these days, and haven't for several years.  They come with a app to create them from a hidden partition on the hard drive, but that also requires an external USB DVD Burner.  Otherwise you can go to this post to find out how to order replacement media.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • How do I get a replacement install disc for my MacBook Pro?

My MacBook Pro was stolen last year and recently recovered by the police.  I was overjoyed until I found that the theif installed windows 7 onto to my computer.  I know I need to reformat my hardrive but I no longer have the system intalll disc that came with my computer.  Can I just buy a OS X disc from apple or do I need to get a specific disc MacBook disc for everything to work properly?
    -Ryan

For software discs, there are two cases:
    a) came with 10.6. In this case order the replacement DVD from Apple.
    b) came with 10.7. In this case there may be no replacement discs. Start up with Command-R and install 10.7 from the Internet.
This varies slightly depending on EXACTLY which model you have.

  • When I turn on MacBook Pro it telling me that my start up disk is full and I need to delete files.  How do I get to start up disc?

When I search a file called start up disc, nothing shows up. How do I delete files so when my computer starts up, I no longer get a message stating that my start up disc is full and that I need to delete some files?

There is a boot drive inside the computer and it's storage space is filled up.
You need to create a external storage drive and transfer some of your files off the internal boot drive.
TimeMachine doesn't work for this as it's just a rotating backup image of what's on your boot drive, it's not a storage drive for more space and to save things permanently.
So what you need to do is get three external drives from the office or computer store.
I suggest 3-4 separate drives at 1TB each (or more capacity if you really got a lot of stuff), USB 2 is currently fine, the newer USB 3's are more expensive but your Mac doesn't have USB 3 ports, so get the less expensive USB 2 drives and save some money. If you can get Firewire 800/USB combination drives, those would be a better choice as Firewire 800 is the fastest for most Mac's. Only the very new ones have Thunderbolt and the new drives for that are rare and expensive.
Make sure they are self powered drives with their own power supply, not port powered as those are a bit flaky as Apple can just determine the device is drawing too much current from the computer and turn it off.
Note: sometimes if your computer is so full, you might actually have to delete some files in order to be able to get it to function transferring files, so pick ones that you can get new copies again, like free iTunes podcasts or movies for instance.
    TimeMachine Drive
The first drive you connect to the Mac is going to pop up a window to ask if you want to make this a "TimeMachine Drive" go ahead and allow it to do that, it's backing up everything on your internal boot drive, it's going to take a long time.
Once it's finished, disconnect this TimeMachine drive and label it as a "TimeMachine Drive"
    Extra space /Storage drives
The second drive you connect is going to be your "extra storage drive" basically to free up space off the internal boot drive by transferring files to it.
    Formatting:
You first need to format this drive, you use Disk Utility in the Applications> Utilities folder.
On the left will be the 'name of the drive' + "media" click that and then click the Partition tab
Now click 1 Partition, Option: GUID, format OS X Extended (Journaled), give it a name like "StorageOne" and click Apply.
Now click the Erase Tab and Security Option> Zero All Data and click Erase (use the same name) this will take a long time, like 2 hours per 1TB. It's going to check the drive for any errors and make sure it's working.
Note: If the drive fails to format, then perform the Zero All Data first, then visit the Partition tab.
Once the second drive is finished, then do the third drive in the same manner, this time naming it "StorageTwo"
Transferring Data off to the Extra Storage drive
Connect only StorageOne drive and visit your User/Movies folder, it's likely the biggest culprit of oversized files. Create a new folder on the StorageOne drive called "ExtraMovies" and transfer the contents of User/Movies to the "ExtraMovies" folder via drag and drop methods.
Confirm the files were transferred and then delete those movies by dragging them to your Trash can and selecting "Empty Trash" from the Finder menu (if you select Secure Empty Trash on large files it takes a really long time to finish as it's scrubbing the drive, likely unnecessary except for sensitive files)
If you have a large amount of User/Files elsewhere, you will have to search yourself and repeat the same steps to free up room on your internal boot drive.
Once you have made some free space, download this free program to help you visualize where all your space is being taken up.
    http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/#download
Once you have completed moving files to the StorageOne drive, connect StorageTwo and copy the contents of StorageOne folders to StorageTwo drive. Both drives have to be connected of course.
    Rule of thumb
Maintain TWO separate hardware copies of your User data at ALL TIMES
Because you need more room, thus the storage drives are for extra space. The TimeMachine drive is a backup of your internal boot drive and the second storage drive is a backup copy of the first storage drive. So that way your sticking with the rule of thumb, get it?
Don't connect TimeMachine while your transferring files, or formatting drives, you don't want it to "kick in" while your doing all this heavy work or transferring a large amount of files, I think it does so every hour, which you are going to taking quite some time to do all this work.
Once your all done making room and copying files to the Storage drives, disconnect them and label them and date them.
    Reconnect TimeMachine drive
Then connect the TimeMachine drive and it will make a NEW backup of your now newer configuration on your boot drive and keep it updated every time you connect it.
Again, TimeMachine is NOT a storage drive for permanent keeping of data, it deletes old stuff as time progresses. So even though you can "go back in time" and recover a file you transferred then deleted off the your internal boot drive, it  won't keep everything forever like a storage drive can.
    Consider Cloning your boot drive.
TimeMachine drives can only restore, they are not bootable like a clone is, so a TimeMachine drive isn't a heck of a lot of help if your hard drive fails to boot the computer, so a "hold the option key bootable clone" made with third party software is a very useful as you get to use the computer just like it was before and can get online, grab files off the internal drive and so forth. Even erase and reverse cloning!
The trick with a clone is you make one and keep it disconnected, updating it from time to time. If a software update or install hoses your machine, you can option boot off the clone, grab the latest copy of your files and reverse clone the clone with the updated files back onto your OS X partition, reboot the computer and it's like nothing happened.
It's a advanced technique, you will have to learn a lot more perhaps before attempting it, but it's a lifesaver.
Cloning requires another separate external hard drive and free cloning software.
You can read more about it all here. Take your time, you have a lot to absorb.

  • How do I get correct text size in MM

    Hi all
    (Illustrator CS4)
One thing has been puzzling me while using Illustrator. If I am given a job and it says the text needs to be 2mm high how do I do this? If I type 2mm into the character tool the size of the text when turned into paths is actually 1.444 mm?! Is there any way of getting text in exact mm without guess work!
    Regards
    Matthew

    Hi everyone,
this topic has already been answered, but I didn't find the method I've come to use mentioned.
There are two ways I use to do this, both with the same results in sizing.
    #1:
If I don't need editable type at all, I just create outlines out of everything and change the height.
This works if you don't need the font-size and want every letter to fit into a rectangle with the same height.
    #2:
By adding a Live Effect in the Appearance-panel, you can achieve the same results as you do with create outlines, but with the added bonus of getting the font-size and you can even choose just one letter to set the height by.
I choose Path > Outline Object in the Appearance-panel, followed by typing in whatever mm I want in the transform panel, not the font size. Then I clear the appearance.
By turning on the bounding box you can also see what's happening. When you create outlines from type, the bounding box
will "hug" the letters tightly and not use the usual upper/lower-case bounding box.
If the customer knows what letter he wants to be exactly measured, I use this method first and save the font-size that comes up and write with it.
Hope this helps someone out there, it works for me.

  • How can I get software from a disc onto my macbook air which does not have a disc drive.?

I have  macbook air with no disc drive. However, I recently was given some cookbook software as a gift and it is in disc form. Wondering if there is an easy way to get this new software onto my mac. Was hoping I could upload the software to another PC and then burn it to a thumb drive and switch it over that way.Thoughts on if this is doable??

  • How can I get a new Restore Disc for my 14" iBook

I bought a 14" iBook years ago new from an Apple Store but somewhere along the line I lost my restore disc. Well the thing has locked up and needs to be restored. Is there some way I can go about getting a replacement disc?
    Thanks!
    Ryan

    HI,
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

  • Erased Mac mini HD to sell, but now how do I get OS X Tiger disc out?

I just got my new Macbook, used Migration Assistant to transfer all of my data to my new computer, and reinstalled OS X Tiger on my Mac mini 1st gen and erased its HD so that I can sell it.
Problem is, now that installation is done, every time I turn on the stupid thing it makes me go through the initial setup, with the OS X disc still inside. I would rather the new owner go through that, as this computer will be theirs and not mine anymore. Am I going to have to sell the computer with the disc still inside, or is there a way for me to eject the disc so I don't have it just laying inside there?

That will pop out the disk.
When it's out, restart again, holding down the CMD+S keys. This puts the machine into single-user mode and gives you an Unix command line terminal screen. When the text stops scrolling, type in this command and click the return key:
    shutdown -h now
This shuts down the computer; the next time it is turned on, the Setup Assistant will appear and the new user will get to personalize it. This also alleviates the necessity of presetting any display parameters, internet and e-mail settings, etc. As long as the monitor can hook up to the machine, the OS will select a usable resolution and the user can use the Display prefpane to suit their needs. They'll also have to run Software Update and bring everything up to the latest version.
Finally, don't forget to include the original disks and manuals with the Mini.

  • How do I get files onto scratch disc?

I seem to have FCP X set up so that it uses my scratch disc yet my main Mac drive keeps filling up as I work on projects. In the project hierarchy it shows the two drives that I have and my projects (events) are listed under my scratch disc.  Anyone have any suggestions?

In FCP X, in the Event Library, the Action Menu at the bottom of it (looks like a gear), select "Group Events By Disk", and you can see what is on what hard drive.
In the Events Library, you can click and drag Events from one drive to the other.  This is the safest way to do this, so that the internal database of the Event updates to reference the drive it's on.
Right click on a Project in the Project Library, and Copy it along with it's Events to the drive you want it on.
You can right click on Events and Projects to "Move to Trash", in order for the appropriate databases to update cross references.
