How to capture hi-res still frames?

What's the best way to capture a maximum resolution still frame from a final cut movie or a quicktime movie?
G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I followed your instruction, and it worked. Thanks. However, it converted my 16:9 image to a 4:3 image. It was simple enough to restore the proper aspect ratio in Photoshop, but I'd like to be able to export the still image and retain the proper aspect ratio. Do you know how to manage this?

Help how do you save a still frame of video as a photo? Thanks

A still frame from an Event:
Put cursor at the frame you want, then right click (or command click) and select "Add Still Frame to Project".
The still frame will be added at the end of the Project.
A still frame from a Project:
Put cursor at the frame you want then right-click (or control-click) and select "Add Freeze Frame". The Freeze frame will be added after the clip.
    In both cases:
Select the still frame (so the yellow band is around it).
Right-click (or control-click) and select "Reveal in Finder".
You will see a JPG file highlighted in the finder.
Drag this file and drop it on your iPhoto icon in the Dock.

  • How do I make a still frame in iMovie and send it to iPhoto?

How do I take a still frame from a movie clip in iMovie and send it to iPhoto?
The goal is when I export my movie to iDVD, I want to use still clips from my movie as the rotating images. Right now it either plays through the DVD in the rotating part or I can drag pictures from iPhoto into the slots.
    Thanks!

  • How do i create a still frame from a clip in iMovie 11? thanks

Good morning. How do I create a still frame from a clip in iMovie 11.  Thanks

First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.
You can then drag this photo into iPhoto.

  • HOW TO CAPTURE FULL-RES IN QUICKTIME????

    Hi
A friend of mine who doesn't have FCP needs to capture full-res DV Quicktimes of DV & DVCAM tapes.
However, when I select "device native" in the Quicktime Recording prefs, Quicktime captures a 640x480 movie, not a 720x480! I encounter this issue despite capturing from several different decks.
Now, the 640x480 recording looks squished; when I manually change that recording's resolution to 720x480, the image appears to be the proper aspect ratio.
But why isn't Quicktime capturing in DV's proper resolution to begin with? Please advise.
    --Tasty

    Simple answer:
Don't use the new "One Click" recording feature found in the Mac version of QT Pro if you wish to further edit the file in DV editing apps.
The button says that it will create a .mov file. Quicktime doesn't use the "rectangular" pixels (wrong phrase but you know what I mean) found in a DV source file.
Slower computers may also notice a significant "frame drop" when making these recordings.
The file created by QT Pro is correct. A 4:3 file should be 640X480 in dimensions. It is only when these 4:3 files are imported into DV editing app (iMovie, FCP) that you notice the change.
Since you must have QT Pro to make these "recordings" use its Movie Properties/Visual Settings window to change the dimensions.
If you use a DV source you are better served by importing the file using iMovie (or other apps).
    Square pixels vs. rectangular pixels.
Your friend should import the .dv files using a DV editor.

  • How do I export a still frame

How do you export an imovie still frame to other formats such as jpg

Yes I'm *sure* there's no storboard in my version. Though I think it's a matter of how they are calling it. In my opinion, apple likes to give features, which are already there, a new name and enhances them a bit (graphically for one part) in every new version (think of "conversation view" in Mac os x lion mail.app). But that aside.
I have to look again if I find something like the "show in finder". But what I meant, was that I don't have the storyboard in the appearance you guys (with your iMovie '11) havewith all those extras like sorting clips in medium shot, wide shot, etc. In my iMovie, it's just a block of clips and not one of the three categories (outline, storyboard, shot list).
That's my imovie (what I think you mean with "storyboard" is my upper left corner)
    That is your storyboard:
What I found in my iMovie was the "add freeze frame"-method in my "bunch-of-clips"-section (storyboard).
What I found quite possible is to adjust the slider so i can see every second after makeing a freeze frame. Next, I can select less than a half second and when exporting that part as jpgs (with calbe's method), I don't have so many pictures. As I mentioned before, it's not so sophisticated. (Not without thinking, apple seems to have made this particular part better in iMovie '11.)

  • How do i move a still frame out?

New to iMovie, but when this question was presented it didn't answer my inquiry.  I don't have the option to reveal in finder.  Please help!  Thanks.

While there still isn't any option to Reveal In Finder in my top left window of iMovie (when I created a still frame), I bypassed that by just taking the raw video from the bottom window, Revealing In Finder there, feeding it into the MPEG Streamclip and followed orders by isolating the frame I needed when I dragged the bar across.
Where there's a will, there's a way!  Thanks so much for your help!  Even though the option still isn't in the top left window of iMovie, I can get around it for now.  You'll never know how close I was to bringing this puppy back to the store based on this one huge (I mean it; someone should tell Apple)  problem.  Keep rockin' it out, dude!  Many thanks again.

  • How to make a still frame of iDVD menu?

I want to make a DVD label and cover that copy the title menu page. How do I make a still frame that I could manipulate in iPhoto or Photoshop?
    Thanks
    Ashley

I do this all the time. Turn off motion at a point you like.
Go into the Applications folder. Find the Utilities folder. Open it. Find Grab. Double-click on it. Go into the Menu, click on Capture and select Selection. Now, drag your cursor across the menu and release. Name and save the image (to your desktop?).
Open in Photoshop (or Elements). Crop to 4.75 x 4.75 inches for Apple's CD case. Crop to 5.125 x 7.25 inches for DVD case. Print and insert.
Not exactly "easy," but it works for me.

  • How to convert a still frame in IMovie to Iphoto

After I convert video to a still frame in IMovie, how to I save the still frame in Iphoto?

  • Poor quality of still frames

Hello, I have mpeg4 films from which I hope to extract some good quality still photos. Although I am able to create still frames and save them as jpegs the stills are a poorer quality than the film. How can I make the still frame quality as good as the film? Grateful for any help.

    Hi Karsten,
Many thanks for your reply. The resolution (dimension?) of one of the mp4 videos is 1280 x 720. I have done several tests and have another at 724 x 576.
You say "screen res is much higher than video res". I'm expecting to get a still photo which is as good in quality as the full screen version - is this not possible? Taking a closer look at the video I now see it's not great quality. With this in mind, if I single out an individual frame - pixelation shows. I suppose when playing the video this pixelation is blurred by movement and the fps. Also I should mention this video has been through a video converter before I could use it in iMovies and the resulting mp4s are nearly the same quality as the original. Thanks for helping a iMovie novice!

  • I need to pull still frame from video.

How do you pull a still frame from imovie?  I saw a recent discussion about downloading mpeg streamclip.  But, that won't open.

Easiest way is to just take a picture of the frame you want. First, full screen the video. Then, pause it where you want the still. Take a screenshot by pressing command, shoft and 3 at the same time. It should save the phto directly to your desktop. Make sure you take the picture when it is on fullscreen. Otherwise, the photo will be bad quality.
