How to change DV/DVCPRO video to 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio in Final Cut Pro X?

I shot some DV video footage on a Canon XL2 in 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio mode. I captured it on a Firestore and imported it into Final Cut Pro X, and it is now being displayed in an incorrect standard 4:3 aspect ratio.
How can I change the aspect ratio of the video within FCPX once I've imported it?
I've tried playing with the Spatial Conform setting for the video file, but that keeps it in a standard aspect ratio and fits or fills the video into a different aspect ratio. So that's not the answer.
I've tried an old trick I used when working with DV widescreen video and iDVD, but this process doesn't fix the aspect ratio in FCPX. Here's the article for your reference:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2179
Did Apple forget that DV/DVCPRO video--although standard def--can be displayed in 4:3 or 16:9? It seems to force it to 4:3.
Thanks.

@daguerratype
The Spatial Conform is one of the things I tried. Unfortunately none of its settings fixed the aspect ratio. When I choose "Fit", it simply shows it as 4:3 and leaves left and right black borders on a 16:9 timeline. When I choose "Fill", it zooms the 4:3 video and chops off the top and bottom parts.
@Thomas Emmerich
This is a decent workaround. Fortunately my clips are named in such a way that I can easily drop them all in the timeline and do a Command-F (Find) to search by clip name, highlight all of them in the search results, then use the Inspector to modify the properties of all the clips at once. I have to change X-scale to 133% and Spatial Conform to "Fit", and now at least it fits the 16:9 timeline properly.
Thanks to both replies. I still hope Apple adds a way to fix the clip in the Event browser so that I don't have to do this workaround.

Whenever I upload new media (regardless of what ratio it was filmed in) it plays in letterbox format. I would like to change the aspect ratio to 16:9. Thanks.

Please open the clip in the QT player and post a screen shot of the movie inspector. Post a screen **** of what you're seeing in the viewer.
You keep saying upload, do you mean import?

    Hi,
      1. Make sure you have the camera connected via Firewire (i link)
    2. The Camera is turned to "play" and, if you are capturing HDV,  in the camera menu, it is set to i link "OFF"

  • How do i get a copy of IDVD and will it work with final cut pro x.

I have a new powerbook. I've purchased final cut pro x because express is no longer available. My Mac didn't come with iDVD and I can't find a suitable dvd authoring tool. Please... some suggestions for DVD authoring or how to get a copy of iDVD and will it even work with FCPx.

Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.  (There are no realistic substitutes for iDVD.)

If you are still within your 15 day return period,  nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.  You MUST speak to a senior advisor to get a free copy. The first tier people cannot do it.
If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11  (includes iDVD) on disk.
IDVD is a wonderful piece of software and well worth the low cost of $40.

  • Can you import video from dvcam using a dsr 2000 into final cut pro 10?

Can you bring video from a DVCam tape using a DSR 2000 into Final Cut Pro?

Should work OK with the iLink (a.k.a. Firewire a.k.a. IEE1394a) interface, but you may have to capture using iMovie, then ( in FCX) running File > Import > iMovie Events.)

  • Changing aspect ratio in Final Cut Express 4

I am having trouble with the aspect ratio of my clips.
I imported from a camera to iMovie '08, then edited all the clips which I needed (about 10 hours of 2 minute clips). Then I bought FCE4 as I realized I wouldn't be able to do what I needed in iMovie. I imported all the video in 16:9, and have checked the project settings on all of the clips in iMovie - all are set at 16:9, then I exported them as Final Cut xml files.
I've now begun to import them into Final Cut, but they come in as 4:3. In the project properties I have them set as PAL CCIR 601, but I am not given an option to set the aspect ratio. I've tried setting it to 1.422 in the motion tab of the viewer, but it doesn't appear to do anything.
So, how can I import these files into FCE4 and preserve the 16:9 aspect ratio?

    Hi
    Did You try.
    • After Capture
    • Select a Clip in Browser
*• The Browser window can be extended to the right.*
    • Now more columns will be revealed - one of them Anamorphic
    • tick this for the selected clip
    • NOW drop clip into TimeLine (has to be done this way)
    How does it Play ?

  • How do I get rid of audio pops and clicks between clips in Final Cut Pro X?

Is there a layman, non-professional way to do this? These are just video files... i don't know anything about formats of different files and all that, but i read in other posts that the files should be "uncompressed 48k something something", but i dont even know how to convert the audio(From video) that's already on my timeline to this format

Your clicks probably are related to the fact that you are using the whole clip, leaving no "handles". Handles are extra portions of a clip, before and after the portion you use in your timeline.
The clicks are probably caused by the camera. You are using whole clips (that is why you get the warning when trying Cmd-T, "there is no extra media..."), so you are starting and ending right where the camera did.
If possible, trim a little bit at the end and start of each clip. Select just the edge of the clip (not the whole clip) and drag a little bit to shorten it. Just a few frames might be enough.
For the future, you should remember to let the camera capture a little more than you will actually use - so that you can have those "handles". See the picture.

  • How to replace audio on a music video with final cut pro x

How do I replace low quality audio on a music video to a higher better quality audio with final cut pro x?
I have the new audio on cd which I can rip and replace the original audio.
Some audio and music videos are not of same length, In cases like this how do I sync video to the newly replaced audio?
Is there any tutorial, link or where to look for this in the manual?
Any help will be very much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance.

Providing you don't need the video synced or cut to a beat, all you need to do is place your music in the primary storyline
    Connect your video above.
While your video is connected, hit CMD+R on your keyboard and stretch the video to the length of the music
If you were to cut the video to a beat, simply add markers on your music track, then connect and trim clips to your markers.

  • How to compress/adjust imported videos in Final Cut Pro and iMovie?

Left: what the video looks like when played in iPhoto or Quicktime (Dimensions: 960 x 720, Codecs: AAC, H.264) .mov
Right:  what the video looks like when played in iMovie or Final Cut Pro.
    SOS

the left shot is 4:3 (960/720)
    the right shot is a 16:9 project (1920/1080 or 1280/720) with a stretched-to-fit 4.3 video.
If you want an un-stretched project, set it to 4:3 manually when you create a New project, or use the transform-tool and resize the video - which will add bars l/r or chops-off t/b of the video...
or use the Spatial Confirm settings in the Inspector ...

  • How to save Final Cut Pro project to an ftp server to then open on a different computer

Hello, I work for a graphic design firm that also does video production for businesses. We are using Final Cut Pro X in our office which has an FTP server connected to all office computers.
What we want is to be able to have on employee start a project in Final Cut Pro X, save it to the server; then have another employee open up the same project and continue working from a different computer.
Right now, we have a lot of our Final Cut files saved to the server, and the files will show up in the server on the other employee's machine. BUT, we scroll in the server to the file for the Final Cut Pro project on the other computer, and the file is grayed out, unable to be opened on the new computer.
I've tried right clicking and choosing "open with Final Cut" and Final Cut does then open, but right before it opens the project within Final Cut, a message comes up saying "The document could not be opened. Open documents from within Final Cut Pro," which of course, I see no way to do that from within Final Cut Pro.
I've also called Apple Care, they reminded me that we can't have one project open on two computers at the same time, and that's fine. We are willing to close the project on computer one to then open on computer two.
If you have an answer let me know. We don't want to have to load onto an external hard drive to then load onto the other machine, especially since we have a server ready to go.
    Thanks for your help.

You can share projects via the ftp server, but you need to:
    1) Have all the media in identical events on each editor's machine;
    2) Set up the project  and share the entire folder for that project first;
    3) Afterwards, you can share just the project file itself
You CANNOT work directly on projects and events stored in the ftp server.
See Steve Martin explain how to do all this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hu-ga7fxKh8

  • I have a fairly new iMac wI now have iMovie events and Final Cut pro events that are duplicates.  Does that mean that all my video is copied onto my hard dive twice?

If I have video in imovie and final cut pro X, does that mean there are two copies of the video, one for each piece of SW?  If so, how do I get rid of the imovie events and keep only the Final Cut Pro X events (video)?  I don't want multiple copies of the same video stored on the hard drive.

If you import to FCP directly from the Camera or from a camera archive, you would likely import choosing Optimized Files which would go to a FCP event that is in ProRes 422 codec. This would be in addition to your iMovie Event which would import using the Apple Intermediate Codec. So you would have two copies of the same information. An AIC copy and a larger ProRes copy.
However, if you use FILE/IMPORT/iMOVIE EVENT LIBRARY, FCP will not duplicate the event files from iMovie. It will treat them as referenced files, and will point to the iMovie Event files in the reference. So there is no duplication. You will be editing Apple Intermediate Codec files in FCP.
However, FCP will create Event folders. In addition to the reference information, these will contain thumbnail files that are compatible with FCP, stabilization and analysis files that are compatible with FCP, as well as any intermediate render files that are associated with the Event.
So in this case, there is no duplication of the large event files, but there is some duplication of the small thumbnail files.
I have several terabytes of iMovie Events, which are now all available in FCP. Believe me, I would know if they were duplicated because all my disks would be full.

  • How do I center text in Final cut Pro?

Hi, does anyone know how to directly center text with more than one line of text in Final Cut Pro?
If I have more than one line it doesn't seem to center properly. I've tried wireframe (which is inaccurate), center values (which doesn't work) and Boris 3D (which does the job but the space between letters isn't accurate so I need to try an alternative method).
    Any ideas?

In Title 3D you use the Position X/Y button to adjust the height. The spacing between the letters in Title 3D can be adjusted both in tracking and in kerning by placing the cursor between a letter pair. Title 3D is perhaps one of the most accurate and precise text positioning titlers available in any software.

  • Hxr-nx30e Sony Video and Final Cut Pro X

I am waiting delivery of a new Sony HXR-NX30e Sony Video camera.  I would like to use Final Cut Pro, but have heard that there might be difficulty importing from the cameras hards disk. - Is this correct and if so what can I do?

I have Sony HDR-250e HD cancorder. No problem to import or edit your clips in FCP. Hopefully you will be able to do the same and also to export your perfect final movie file and enjoy watching it. Unfortunately this is not the case with my Sony HDR-250e. All my exported files are far from perfect. They are choppy and blurred wherever the camcorder was moving. I can't find a solution for that. When you start shooting on your new camcorder, could tou pelase shoot a couple of clips with the camcorder moving horizontally and vertically. Process them in FCP and then check if the video in the expoprted video is smooth.
