How to change from 16:9 aspect ratio to 4:3

I've created a movie in iMovie09 using still photos that I cropped to the Widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. It looks great, but now I want to change it to Standard 4:3. I can do this under Project Properties, but then when I play it, the right and left sides of the photos have been cropped off. It wouldn't be so bad except that many of this photos have text which spans the width of the photo; the sides of the text are cropped off. What I'd like to do is have the movie show in letterbox with black at the top and bottom, and have the entire photo displayed.
Any suggestions? I could go back to the beginning and recreate the movie with the 4:3 setting, but that will be very time-consuming. There ought to be an easier way.

You have already taken the first step, which is to switch to 4:3 in Project Properties.
Now, select a still and open the Rotate/Crop/Ken Burns Tool (on the middle bar). It sounds like it is set to "Crop". Change this setting to "Fit".
Repeat for all photos.
You can Edit/Copy the first still (after making the change). Then select the rest (using command-click or Edit/SelectAll). Then Edit/ Paste Adjustments.

  • Satellite C660 - How to change from 32 bit to 64 bit operating system?

Can some one please tell me how to change from a 32 bit to a 64 bit operating system for my Toshiba Satellite C660 Notebook?
No cds came with my notebook so I can't restore.
I installed the 32 bit when setting up by mistake and would now like to change.
    Thanks in advance

    >No cds came with my notebook so I can't restore.
In user manual you could find a info that recovery disk needs to be created using preinstalled software called Toshiba Recovery Media (disk) Creator
    >I installed the 32 bit when setting up by mistake and would now like to change.
The Toshiba image of some notebook models contains the Win 7 32bit and 64bit system.
Not sure if your image supports both versions so cannot say for sure if you would be able to switch to 64bit but try this:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD1303440001R01.htm
During HDD recovery procedure you should be asked what version you want to chooseof course if both versions would be available so check thisotherwise you will need to purchase an 64bit version.

  • FCP to IPod, how to preserve a 16:9 aspect ratio

I am trying to export a video through Compressor to play on an iPod. The video has a 16:9 aspect ratio, but the only file I can get to sync and play on the iPod is with extension .m4v (through the iPod H264 settings in Compressor), but this resizes the image to what appears to be a 4:3 aspect ratio. Is there any way around this, so that I can get a letterboxed 16:9 movie created in FCP to play properly on an iPod? Maintaining the 16:9 aspect ratio is very important. Thank you in advance to anyone who may be able to answer this.

When you choose that preset, double click it to have the inspector show up. Go into the Encode window (2nd little square from the left below Description).
4th row down is Aspect Ratio. If it says 4:3, click the gear to the right and it should either come up 16:9 or you should be able to change to 16:9. Even though the 4:3 may be initially grayed out, the gear should be black so you can click it.
If that already says 16:9, someone else will need to chime in.

  • Removing black bars from youtube/altering aspect ratios for youtube

How do you get rid of the black lines on the vid on youtube using I Movie 08? I have tried using the crop options in I movie, and still cant get rid of the back lines above and below. The cameras aspect ratio is 4:3 and using crop options of “fit” or “done” does not fix it. For example, here’s an exercise vid I did.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWgFDVI8Xs4
What is the cure for this? I notice when the vid is in the even library it’s in 4:3 as the source vid from the cam but is converted to 16:9 when moved to the project library. Is there any way to prevent that or convert it back to 4:3? I had thought the crop options in I movie would do the trick, but it does not from what I can tell.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
Is your project 4:3, you set this when you create your project. You can check this by looking at the project properties from the file menu.

  • Changing from a 4:3 ratio to a 16:9 ratio --

I have created a title sequence project in 4:3 aspect ratio for SD video projects and I would now like to take the exact same title sequence project and render it for HD video, so I need to change the aspect ratio to a 16:9 one.
Anyone know if there's an easy and quick way to do this? Or do I have to completely re-do the entire project from scratch?

I did this to add a 16:9 anamorphic preset to LiveType: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1369506&tstart=0

  • How to setup a new pixel aspect ratio?

    Hi!
I created project in 1020x1080, ad for this res I need pixel aspect ratio 3,21:1.
Do You have solution how to achieve it?
    best regards
    Marcin

If your project is going to be displayed on two screens you need to know how it is going to be played back. If you are setting up synchronized playback of two video files set up your comp at 2X as wide as HD (3840 X 1080) but create two rendering comps that are standard HD and drag the 2X  comp in each as a nested comp and adjust the position or anchor point to give you a left and right render.
If you are planning to setup the computer that plays back this file with two monitors then first you have to make sure that you can straddle the playback across both monitors. If so, then just render your 2X comp using a data rate that your media player will handle.
If you are not doing the playback then you MUST check with the client's equipment provider for specifications. Systems designed for playback on multiple screens do not necessarily follow any set standard you you must get the specifications from the supplier or your work product will only have a small chance of being usable.

  • How to find out what your aspect ratio is?

I have completed my project in FCP 7 and I am trying to send it to a film festival. They need it to be a 1:77:1 aspect ratio-I think they mean 1:78 aspect ratio. I tried to analyze the clip but I don't see any aspect ration listed. Also how would I change the aspect ration on my project I already finished? Use Compressor?
    Thanks in advance.

there's this wonderful new invention called  "google."  took me less than 10 seconds to find this
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image)
by searching "video aspect ratio chart."  Forgive the snarkiness, but being able to research this by yourself is an important skill to have.  Wikipedia is a great place to start looking
Here's the relevant quote "16:9 (1.77:1) (generally named as "Sixteen-Nine", "Sixteen-by-Nine" and "Sixteen-to-Nine") is the international standard format of HDTV,"
So what are your sequence settings?  If you're material was shot within the last few years, it's almost definitely 16:9 (also known as 1.77:1).

  • How to change from square pixels to rec. pixels on timeline

I scanned a graphic, imported it into Photoshop 7, and it has square pixels. When I import the graphic file into FCP 5 timeline, the pixels get destorted. I suppose the timeline is looking for rectangular pixels. Can I change the pixel aspect ratio in FCP? If not, is there a way to save the graphic as rectangular pixels in Photoshop?
    Thanks!

If your file from Photoshop is a single layer and NOT a .psd file, then FCP assumes square pixels and makes the pixel aspect correction for you.
Save the single layer file from Photoshop as a PICT, TIFF, or JPEG.
If you need to retain layers in Photoshop, ideally the image would be built to conform to your sequence settings. If your working in Standard Def. Build the graphic as 720x540, then just before saving, resize the image to 720x480 by un-checking the Constrain Proportions in the Image Size window.

  • How to change from SLIM to KDM?

    Hello,
I'm using the MATE desktop, OpenBox as window manager and SLIM for login.
I'm starting to feel tired of not being able to change between various desktops without closing the main one, I mean, with OpenSUSE Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F6 are terminal ttys (it is so with Arch+SLIM too), Ctrl+Alt+F7 to F12 are graphical ttys, you can change between any of them and log in as any user you want without closing the F7 tty, or closing it, or doing whatever you want. This was petty cool in order to kill some broken task that hanged the screen or in order to do whatever.
May I don't know how to do it with SLIM, but anytime I do Crtl+Alt+F9, for example, I just got a blank screen with an hyphen blinking. With OpenSUSE I got a graphical login screen.
    More:
I've got installed OpenBox, MATE and enlightenment. It is suppose me to be able to change between them pressing F1, and in fact SLIM changes where says "session: XXXX" between them at the login screen, but whatever I choose SLIM ALWAYS log me in MATE. I've got to change it manually in ~/.xinitrc and logout and login again every time I want to change between sessions. I cannot do it directly at the login screen.
Sometimes after login out and login in several times SLIM hangs and I have to reboot.
I think all these problems comes from slim, and since with OpenSUSE, that use kdm, I had no problem I want to try kdm as login manager, but I haven't seen any guide to do it if you've got a login manager already installed. I've seen it just if it is the first system installatio. And I'm a little scared of breaking my login and spend too much time fixing it.
How can I change from SLIM to KDM without pain?

WOW, I had to install kdebase-workspace and it installed as dependency a functional kde system . And... I was able to choose between all the other desktops but MATE, so... kdm and all that it installed with it's already uninstalled
But with kdm I was able to open an enlightenment session in tty 8 without closing kde in tty 7...
    ewaller wrote:Install kdm.
Disable the slim service using systemctl
Enable the kdm service using systemctl
No need to uninstall slim.  Hang on to it until everything is working
Thank you ewaller, it worked perfectly
Scimmia wrote:Well changing to kdm is as simple as using systemctl to disable slim and enable kdm. That won't get you graphical logins on tty8+, though.
So, how can I do it with slim?
Raynman wrote:Do you really need a GUI to kill a program?
No, I don't, it was just an example.
Sounds like your xinitrc isn't quite right, check the wiki page for slim.
I'm tired of reviewing my xinitrc in order to make slim let me choose my desktop. I think the F1 to change the session is experimental. I will open other thread in order to get some help or in order to help SLIM to solve this problem.
And you could try LightDM instead (because KDM probably pulls in some KDE crap). It comes with dm-tool (and a replacement for gdmflexiserver) to start a new session on another tty.
Sounds good. I'll try to make slim work perfectly and if I don't get it to work as perfectly I want I'll try other login managers.

  • How to check for different crop aspect ratios

The problem I'm having is that I have hundreds of images that I need to send to a photo print lab. Before sending off my images I have to make sure they all will fit correctly for 8x10 prints (5:4 aspect ratio) and other ratios but I need to keep them cropped in my camera's default 3:2 aspect ratio for people who want to buy 4x6 prints.
So what I do when I open all my images in Bridge's Camera RAW browser is fit and crop any images that need cropping but using the 3:2 aspect ratio. I then need to check to see if my crop will work as an 8x10 crop picture so that nobody's heads are cut off, etc. The problem Bridge is giving me is that when I crop the first time it doesn't allow me to check another crop without losing the original first crop. For example, I do my first crop as an 3:2 aspect ratio and then when I click on 5:4 to check for 8x10 prints it resizes the crop area which lets me check the crop for 5:4 but when I go back to 3:2 it doesn't go back to the original crop so I have recrop the original crop from memory. Is there any way to solve this problem? Basically crop it twice without loosing the first crop so that I can go back.
Also is there any way to quickly click on all aspect ratios like 5x7, 8x10, etc and have the crop centered in the image so that I can quickly check if anything is cut off? My lab is a high volume automated photo lab so they crop by using the center of each picture and I can only give them one image per person. Most of my images don't need cropping because I try to do it in camera but I have to check to see if they will fit for other crop sizes. Currently Bridge makes me create the crop size manually and then visually center the crop over my image. I would prefer quick buttons that when clicked on will show me what the crop will look like in different crop ratios. Is there anyway to do that?
Thanks for any help you can give me

You might want to try this in Adobe Lightroom (it uses the same Camera Raw
    engine as PS and Bridge).
In the develop mode you can use the crop tool with presets and custom
options that works faster and has an easier and better history tool to
retrieve your original crop setting than Camera raw in Bridge and PS has to
    offer.
I would prefer quick buttons that when clicked on will show me what the crop
will look like in different crop ratios. Is there anyway to do that?
