How to change GDM theme in gnome 2.28

I cannot figure out a method. Request for help.

d7wang wrote:Thank you, but that command is not quite functional. According to the bug report, the original GDM configuration tool is temporarily unavailable. I think I'd better waiting for a new tool.~~
You will probably wait very long. New GDM is writed since 2.22, so it makes 2 years without configuration tool...

  • How to change GDM theme?

I just upgraded to Gnome 2.20, but I can't seem to be able to find how to change the GDM theme? I would prefer a userlist, not an ugly default one...there was a menu item before, but now it's gone.

Dheart wrote:In gnome: System -> Administration ->(or something like that my gnome is in Bulgarian...) Login screen
There you can set up everything.
I had no such thing in Gnome 2.30.2 with GDM 2.30.5. I had to install gdm2setup from AUR to have this option available or downgrade to package gdm-old (AUR).

  • [SOLVED] How to change metacity theme in Gnome 3.4?

    Hi all,
I would really like to change the default metacity theme from Clearlooks to something else, but keep Adwaita as the default GTK+ 3 theme. Previously, it could be done using gconf-editor and changing the /apps/metacity/general/theme key value, but on my system /apps/metacity/general is completely empty (like all other metacity 'subgroups').
Does anybody know how to set the default metacity theme?

You're not 'stuck', depending on if your are able to fix the theme, yourself. CSS isn't very difficult to read/edit... I've already been fixing a dark theme to work with gtk-3.4. Mostly, certain things have just been deprecated. So usually, it is as simple as launching a gtk app from a terminal (while using your broken theme) and looking at the gtk-related errors (usually parsing errors) then fixing them in your theme, accordingly. It's pretty easy because it will tell you exactly which line(s) need to be changed...  The most common problem i've seen that pixel sizes must now have 'px'. And there are also some fixing to do, in terms of fixing parts/widgets that don't look quite right - like maybe having to adjust a color, or border or something. but obviously mileage varies, depending on theme + it's engine.
maybe i've just been lucky, i don't know - but i've got a semi-decent theme working, although there are still things to change and fix

  • Changing the GDM theme with Gnome 2.28

    Hi,
so I read that there is no gdmsetup any longer in Gnome 2.28.
The Wiki says that to configure gdm now, one should execute 'dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties' as user gdm:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Gno … g_gdm_2.28
But this doesn't work for me. When I run as root
    # gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties
then I get the usual gnome-appearance-properties dialog, just as if I would launch 'dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties' as a normal user, except that of course, I can change the settings for user gdm instead of those of my normal user. But I can't see how to configure GDM from there. Here's a screenshot:
    http://hetzner.scummunity.de/~malte/screenshot3.png
The Wiki also offers a second method using gconf-editor, but there I can't configure themes, I can only change the background image and such "simple" things.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Malte

thayer wrote:You are absolutely correct, cb474.  I just moved the gdm themes package from extra to the AUR this week. I no longer use GNOME or a login manager so I don't anticipate releasing a new edition for the new GDM.  It sounds as though the new GDM has been simplified significantly so it shouldn't be too difficult for someone to whip up a theme based on the Arch colours, etc.
Thanks for the respones and explanation. Hopefully something will come along.

  • How could i change GTK3 themes in GNOME 3.4

    Hello.
Just one (maybe stupid) question. How could i change the colors of the desktop text, without changing the nautilus colors?
I love the Adwaita theme, but i think it's working for me the Elementary theme (from gnome-look.org). I installed it from the AUR, but the desktop colors are a little bit dark to see them clearly and i want to turn them into white....
I've changed some settings in /usr/share/themes/elementary/gtk-3.0/gtk.css but with no success...
Thanks once more for your help.

You need a more up to date version of the theme. Lots of themes that were designed for gtk 3.2 have the text colour set wrongly in gtk 3.4.
    Also, try comparing to /usr/share/themes/Adwaita/gtk-3.0/gtk.css

  • Changing GDM theme

FORWARD/FYI/PROTIP: I have googled this topic repeatedly, read various threads on these boards and others with no results. Please do not tell me to use google or search these forums or this will turn into a flame war very quick.
Gentoo to Debian to Ubuntu to Arch user. Trying to change the GDM theme and I'm consistently stuck with the same theme. I've tried using gconftool-2 and gconf-editor to edit /desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme as gdm with no luck. I've tried gnome-tweak-tool as gdm with some results, but I only get to choose between four different themes, not all of the themes in /usr/share/themes are listed. Running gdm2setup doesn't do anything noticeable and running gnome-control-center as gdm only lets me change the background image.
Ultimately, I'd like to change the GDM theme to a theme where I can specify which DE I want to use and have the last used DE set to default. Right now, GDM uses GNOME as default and I want to use Enlightnment/E17.
    Help? Thanks.

  • How to change the theme in the default profile so new users get a different theme

How can I change the theme (background picture, etc) for the default profile, so that when new users log in and get a new profile created, they get a different theme than the one they currently receive?

    Hi,
If you want to get a different theme for new users, based on my understanding, it’s not easy, we can load the specific theme for all user because we can control OS to load this specific theme file.
The default location of theme file is:
    C:\Windows\Resources\Themes
To configure OS load different theme for different user, I think this cannot be controlled by a registry key. It’s complicated to make OS choose different theme pack for different user, even more, the theme pack files are limited.
Here is some different but similar discussion about changing theme programmatically:

We have a requirement such that we should be able to change the theme of owc_discussion application based on user locale. e.g. if the locale is arabic I want to display the forum UI rendered right to left.

You can create and use your custom themes but I am not sure exactly about your requirement, please check OWC Discussions admin guide for custom theme.

  • [Gnome 3] Change GDM theme

There was already a discussion about changing the background. Here I mean not the background, but GTK theme (like Adwaita). I tried to launch gnome-tweak-tool under gdm user (Gnome#GDM_Customization in the Wiki), but no GTK applications start there (I get "Could not open display :0" message).
Is there any way to set the theme via gsettings or any other "console" way? I guess gnome-tweak-tool itself works by modifying dconf, but I could not find dconf registry key where GTK theme is specified (seems that dconf-editor does not yet have search functionality).

isn't that background changing enough? you simple have to change other options
    gsetting set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme yourtheme
    gsetting set org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme yourtheme
you only have to add your theme globally or in gdm directory, /var/lib/gdm

  • How to change gdm tty behaviour?

Somehow the GNOME team had the very strange idea of opening the gnome session on another virtual terminal than gdm.
How can I get gdm to behave itself like the good "old" 3.14?
    Thanks for your help

After the update to gdm 3.16.1-3 it "just" spawns to tty2 and not, like before randomly to any tty.
Still this behaviour is annoying and I am desperately looking for a patch or something. I scrolled through the /etc/gdm/ files but could'nt find anything to change the situation.

  • How to change gtk theme dialog box button appearance when using tab?

    Hi,
I'm using candido as my gtk theme and have noticed that when a dialog box pops up (Yes / No), it is extremely difficult to tell which option is highlighted. How do I change this appearance? I searched through the gtkrc and even used gimp to manipulate the images used via trial and error to see if I found one that worked. Can someone familiar with gtk themes tell me which gtkrc or image to alter to affect this appearance?
I use tab to select my option a ton and hate not being able to tell what I'm looking at.
    For reference,
    - here is the current look (can you tell which one is highlighted? It's "Cancel" -- just slightly bigger or a fine line around it) LINK
    - here is the gtkrc if that helps? LINK
For one more point of clarification, I'm not talking about the button appearance on mouseover. I have identified that the button-prelight.png file changes that. I specifically am talking purely about a dialog popping up and then using the tab key alone to highlight through the options. I really like this theme, but this one thing drives me crazy. This appearance changes when I select different themes with lxappearance, so I've narrowed it down to being a gtk-theme issue, not my openbox theme or icon set.
    Many thanks!

    HI,
Debug the program after you press the CANCEL button , you will get where the conrol is flowing , And instead of using
Leave to screen '910'          use               Leave to screen 0.

  • How do I change GDM background in XFCE?

I've just switched from KDE to XFCE in Arch. It's been a relatively painless transition.
I decided to use GDM to login to XFCE, and have it running as a daemon in /etc/rc.conf. This works well, however I can't figure out how to change GDM's background. It's a very plain dark blue. I'd prefer to have my desktop wallpaper displayed. If possible, I wouldn't mind being able to change GDM's theme too, although I'm not as bothered by that.
Does anyone know how to do this? Also, any other tips and tricks for XFCE that I should be aware of? Thanks.

The picture can't be stored in your home directory, usr/share/backgrounds/gnome is ok.

did you say 'yes' to all? i may be confusing the name of the entry, too. it's in the administrative tab in the menu (whatever it's called. 'system', maybe. usually the last one on the right) and it's usually something like 'login manager'. you might want to look at the menu editor and see if it's been somehow unchecked from the menu.
