How to change hard drive in 20" iMac G5 iSight ?

I opened up the machine to replace a dead hard drive (warranty is over anyway) and discovered
there is black tape that seals the edge of the display as well as the area below it. Can I remove this
to change the drive and then put it back without detriment to the functionality of the machine?

Here are the experiences of someone who did what you are doing:
BulaRae posted this experience with the iSight:
Remove all 5 screws on the bottom. The two for the ram slot are captive. The other 3 are not. One is longer than the others, note which slot it came from.
There are catch levers on the top corners that need to be released by sliding something in there. That post recommended a credit card or thin plastic. I used two thin table knives with non-serrated edges.
Once the top is off you can flip it up and lay it down or undo all the tape and unplug the iSight. I left mine intact.
Then the fun part (NOT!). Using my table knife I very carefully peeled up the thick black foil tape stuff along the two edges. It's so sticky and tears easily. You need infinte patience. Once peeled up it reveals 4 torx screws holding the LCD in down on the bottom. You need a long Torx screwdriver and make sure it is magnetic—the screws are not captive and what a pain! Especially when you don't have a magnetic driver!
The you can lift up the LCD. Again I left mine connected and just propped it up by sticking a can of compressed air I had sitting nearby in as a prop (obviously away from the boards). I did have to disconnect the video though (two white connectors on the left that are easy to disconnect). I later read that other connectors were very fragile in this model and wires rip easily, so I'm glad I didn't mess with any more than I had to.
Once I got to the drive I discovered that the third connector (very small 4-pin that went off the side of the drive and over to the board in a different place than the bigger connectors) was too small for the drive that OWC sent me, so now I'm back together (but it ain't pretty in there anymore!) and calling OWC, only to have to do this again in another week or so.
Moral of the story: don't try this at home, folks, unless you have infinite patience and love to do painstaking, tedious things, and also are really good at putting things back together the way you found them!

  • How do change hard drive creation date on OS 10.3.9 hard drive

Nuts, I installed my OS and configured everything without releasing that because the battery was dean the date had reverted back to 1976. Any way to change the hard drive creation date that shows up in GetInfo on my hard drive. Thanks

    Hi, Brett -
That is often an effective solution, when OS 9 is available on another drive or machine, and all that is needed is the availability of Classic.
Unlike OSX, an OS 9 System Folder can be copied via a Finder copy process (drag and drop) and still retain full functionality.
However... if the receiving machine is OS 9 bootable, and the need is not only for Classic but also for a bootable OS 9 System Folder, copying such a folder from a different model Mac will rarely work. Unless specific steps are taken to perform a universal install of OS 9, an OS 9 install will be tailored to the machine it is installed upon - it will be model-specific to that machine.

  • How do I upgrade the hard drive on an iMac G5 (iSight) 2.1 GHz?

The instructions for Do it Yourself hard drive replacement from Apple don't seem to apply to this computer, but to the previous two models. I have read elsewhere that my iMac is not user parts-replacement friendly. I tried to remove the back side of the case per the instructions given by Apple for the previous two models, but no go. The entire unit separates from the front bezel. Way beyond my capabilities or courage. Do I need to have Apple replace the hard drive?

  • How do I set up my G Raid external hard drive on my iMac

just bought a brand new G Raid external hard drive to act as my time machine back up and external storage source for music and film. I have no idea how to set it up and to get things rolling I have simply plugged it in.
    any suggestions?

    Matt cool...
the G Raid drive has worked perfectly then it is my understanding that is rather limited
so I have a 4T drive which means that I have two drives of 2T
as this is acting as my Time Lapse on my iMac which gives me an automatic back up every 10 mins at the moment which I am guessing is to regular and I can change this?
Therefore I should buy a further drive (in spain at the apple store cost is 350 euros) and on this drive I should store all my content music and film as I should have a minimum of data stored on teh internal hard drive on the iMac itself to improve functionality?
does the same apply for my MacBook Pro? this is a mobile solution for film and music (final cut pro and logic) or do I use a solution that does not need an external power source?
    any suggestion welcome

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

And, you might be attracting more knowledgeable answers if you were to post this question in the Time Machine Forum (part of the Snow Leopard forums).

  • I want to disconnect my hard drive from my iMac, if I right click on either of my drives nothing comes up, if I try to move them to trash, one goes in the bin but the other will not, how do I get rid of that one please?

I have two hard drives for my iMac, I cannot right click on either icon to 'safely disconnect' either drive, but I can send one to trash.  The other however will not go to trash so how do I disconnect this one please?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

  • How can I remove the hard drive from an iMac g4 before recycling it?

How can I remove the hard drive from an iMac g4 before recycling it?

There are take-apart guides online.  For example
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imac_g4/imacg4_takeapart.html
However, you can also consider securely erasing the hard drive instead.  You can do this using a Mac OS X installation disc with a version that your iMac G4 can boot from the optical drive.  If this is a viable option, please post back (include Mac OS X version on installation disc).

I just replace my hard drive on my imac and now when i turn the computer on the fan starts running and keeps getting louder. How do i turn it off?
    thanks.

If your machine was made after 2009 you probably installed th wrong HD. Beginning in 2009 Apple began using HD's that had an integrated fan sensor. If you did not use one of these drives then that is the problem. You should contact OWC (www.macsales.com) or visit your local AASP and they will help you select the correct HD to use.

You need at least 10.6.7 installed. If that's the case, since you didn't indicate anything, update to 10.6.8, launch the App Store.app in /Applications, and click on the Redeem link.
