How to change mac desktop icons

I want to change my Macintosh HD icon to an icon of iMac. Where do I find this and do it?
I also want to change other HD icons on desktop - how is this done in Mavericks?

They're in .png extention, you can convert them into .icn by a simple app like Img2icn or even use the online converter. Barney-15E answered the rest.

One of the things I've found with OS X (at least with Snow Leopard, which is my first excursion into OS X), is that all too often the thumbnail displayed on a file, whether a file created or one downloaded, is a false thumbnail. That is, when you do a Get Info on the file the icon in the upper left is the generic icon for that file type, rather than the thumbnail displayed in Finder. Makes it a bit difficult to copy.
Apparently Finder uses Preview in the background to generate the displayed thumbnail without actually creating one.
What I've resorted to doing, particularly with graphic images, is to process them with GraphicConverter - I have its prefs set to automatially add thumbnails and previews. With an individual file this means opening it in GC and doing a Save As. However, a much easier and faster way is when there are two or more such files; I put them in a common folder and drop the folder onto GC. GC then opens them in a catalog view, in the process adding real thumbnails and previews to each automatically. Doesn't take long to do several hundred files that way.

Have you tried using "Get Info" for the link icon? Once the Get Info window is open, you should be able to paste a new icon in there provided you have already copied the icon you want.

If you have not updated your OS you can use the following command.
sudo ifconfig enX ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
You will need to replace the X with your network number and the xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx with the mac you want to have.
Then run
sudo ifconfig enX down
sudo ifconfig enX up
This change will last till your next reboot.

I was concerned about similar issues but took a different approach.
Basically, Mac browsers default the download location to the desktop. However, that location can be changed in the Preferences for any browser I've tried. I create a folder somewhere (usually in my Documents folder) labeled "Downloads" and then open the various browsers I have and "point" the browser's d/l/location to the new Downloads folder. I believe once you set one browser to use the new folder, others automatically find it but I still check each one/
Yes, it's sometimes convenient to have stuff d/l/to the desktop but I like to keep my desktop clean; too many items on the desktop can create performance issues, too. Ways to keep fast access to downloaded files are several:
1) Create an Alias of the Downloads folder on the desktop.
2) Drag the new folder icon to the left-hand pane in Panther's Finder window--it will be there no matter what window you open.
3) Drag the Downloads folder to the Dock at some point the the right of the little separator that segregates the Trash icon.
I do both 2 and 3 and feel it has had no negative effect on fast access to files I download, yet I still get a clean desktop.

Change Mac AFP Icon

Hello!
I share with my old PPC macs quite often (using an intel one), and I want to change the AFP device icon to the specific icon.
It usually just shows a cinema display, whereas for my iMac G4, I want it to show an iMac G4.
I have all the icons, I just have no idea how to change them.
I use my intel MacBook Pro OS X 10.8 to share with iMac G4 OS X 10.3 and iMac G3 OS X 10.3.

It used to be much more possible with Mac OS 9 and earlier. But Apple has locked down most of the icon changing, or made it change every operating system release. You might find something under http://www.haxies.com/ that works or contact the author there, as they specialized in those tools.

It appears that you can't change the icon that iTunes creates in the All users desktop, but you can create a new one if you really care about this.
Go to Program Files\iTunes, right click on iTunes.exe and select Send to>>Desktop (create shortcut). I think you will be able to change this icon.

Do you mean the favicon?
I only just recently learned about favicons myself - so if you google the word you'll get lots of resources for it. Bascially it's a little icon file that sits at the root directory of your site that the browsers find and display for you. As long as the file is there (*named favicon.ico*) it will show up automatically if I'm correct in what I've read.
Is this the thing you're looking for? (edit: it also shows up in your bookmarks list in firefox - if this is the one you want that's the favicon file)

It may be silly but I was wondering how you can change the preview icon of my music to the album art of the songs..
When you go onto Finder and youre on the "all my files" tab, most of my songs have a music note for an icon and I'd like to change that to the album art! Anyone know how!?
