How to change primary external editor

How do I change the primary external editor to Elements 11? It was an old version of PS which I removed and had hoped that since it was no longer available, LR would look for a new one as primary. I already have my Topaz products for the additional external editor. Is it possible to have more than one? If the default choice of LR is unavailable, how do i get LR to look for new one?

Removal of Photoshop has probably left settings in the Registry (if Windows). You can set up as many external editors as you like, so if you can't get it to work as the primary editor, just set it up as another extenal editor. Adobe does have a Cleaner utility to remove old stuff after uninstall. I think there is one for CS3/4 and another for CS5/6. Why uninstallers don't do this in the first place has always puzzled me!

  • How can I change the external editor in iphoto?

When I go to Preferences, the only option that pops up in General Edit is Graphic Converter (formerly used). How can I change the external editor to Photoshop Elements 6? Also, can I drag and drop a photo from iPhoto onto the Photoshop elements 6 icon in the dock and do some editing and saving without corrupting my iPhoto library?

I do not remember how (if) iPhoto 6 handles PSE6 as an external editor - in iPhoto '08 you can set any program as one - try going to the preference that has graphic converter in it and selecting it - you probably will get a select dialogue that will let you choose a new external editor
It is not recommend that you ever save any files directly into the iPhoto library - if you can not get PSE6 set as the external editor then you should export your photos, edit them and save and then import the new photo into iPhoto
But I believe you will be able to set PSE6

  • How do I change the external editor in iPhoto '11?

I recently updated Photoshop CS5 to CS6, but when I try to change the external editor in the advanced section of iPhoto preferences, only Photoshop CS5 is presented. Any idea how I can force CS6 into the options?

In the preferences select CS5 again and the window to choose will open...

  • HOW TO MANUALLY CHOOSE PRIMARY EXTERNAL EDITOR

How can I manually choose the primary external editor? Currently, it's chosen automatically. Is there a Registry fix?
I use XP Professional with Lightroom 1.4.1 and Lightroom 2.0 Beta and 2GB RAM on a 3.2ghz Pentium 4 machine.
Why do I need this? Well, it's not so bad with Lightroom 1, but with Lightroom 2 Beta, if Lightroom picks a program other than Photoshop for its "automatic" choice of a primary external editor, then some options for working with Photoshop are greyed out.
Even with Photoshop selected as a secondary external editor, the choices for Merge to HDR, Stack in Layers, Merge to Panorama, Open as Smart Object are greyed out in the context sensitive menu that pops up when I right-click on an image (e.g. in Library Mode).
Uninstalling the program that Lightroom manually picks only leave an error message for the primary external editor that Photoshop isn't found, even though it's installed. I use CS3 Design Premium with Photoshop CS3 Extended.
    What can I do?????

Lightroom always chooses Photoshop as its primary external editor and you are not given a choice in this. It chooses this by looking at value of registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Photoshop\10.0\Application Path. If that key does not exist Lightroom will display message that Phostoshop could not be found and the Edit with Photoshop menu item will not be available.
As regards LR 2 beta and photoshop, there are many threads in the LR2 Beta forum on the issue of missing options in Edit with Photoshop. The consensus there is that you need V10.0.1 to get all the options such as HDR, Smart Object etc. This is the link to LR 2 Beta forum:

As I write this, the most recent message discusses this very topic of Photoshop editing options. By the time your read this reply it may have moved way down the list, so here is the link to it:

  • Setting the Primary External Editor in LR4

How can I set the primary External Editor in LR4?  I recently  upgraded to CS5.5, then uninstalled CS5 and now Lightroom thinks it should use CS4 which is not longer installed.  I've unstalled and reinstalled LR4 and nothing changed.  I deleted the preferences file and nothing changed.
Why isn't there an easy way to change this setting?
    David

    Winner, Winner, chicken dinner!
Thanks so much trshaner.  A modified Solution 2 from the link you provided below fixed it  i.e. The Photoshop.exe Key was already there, so I just changed it to point to the CS5.5 path.  woala!

  • How to add an external editor in iPhoto

how to add an external editor in iphoto

In case you plan toi use Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as your external this may be of help to you.  The commends can apply to other editors that create layered files and save them with an extension other than .jpg.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note 1: screenshots are from PSE 10
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

Welcome. I am using Photoshop CS5 and this works fine for me. Possibly Adobe has changed this in CS6. Hopefully, LarryHN will have further suggestions. Best.

  • Lightroom 3 does not see Photoshop CS5 as Primary EXTERNAL editor

After removing prior versions of Lightroom (2.7) and Photoshop (CS4), Lightroom 3 does not recognize Photoshop CS5 64 bit or 32 bit as the PRIMARY external editor.  I can select the file and edit in the proper file, but the other options are greyed out.

Missing Registry entry caused by uninstalling CS4 AFTER installing CS5.

  • Photoshop CS5, primary external editor

Well, I'm going to try this again. I posted the question once before, but nobody answered. I have tried to search but haven't found what I need. And, admittedly, I haven't paid attention when it has been answered in the past because I didn't think it would never affect me. I have been using Photoshop CS3 along with my Lightroom 3. No problems, no complaints. But now I'm going to move to Photoshop CS5. Consequently the question: should I just uninstall Lightroom and then install Photoshop CS5 followed by reinstalling Lightroom? I want CS5 to be the primary external editor. Photoshop CS3 will still be on my computer. Or, I guess the easiest question is, what is the simplest way to have Lightroom see Photoshop CS5 as the primary external editor? I apologize for having to ask this question.

Typically, the last installed Adobe editing application will take precedence, although Windows XP can misbehave. Therefore, install CS5 after Lr.

  • How to remove an external editor in Aperture 3

I've searched but can't find how to remove an external editor in Aperture 3. The external editing software I was using as a trial simply didn't make the cut.

Are you sure you're talking about an external editor and not a plug-in?
When you remove the application you're using as the external editor it should no longer show up in the *Photos->Edit with* menu. There is no way, short of editing the Aperture plist file, of having it not show up in the *Preferences->External Photo Editor:* field.

  • How do I change my external editor in Lightroom back to CS5?

I have Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS5.  I installed CS6 to experiment, but I don't really want to "work" with it.  However, it changed the settings in Lightroom to default to CS6 as my external editor.  How can I change this back to CS5?

    Hey,
I checked with Kelly Castro on the LR team and he said you should be able to save each of your external apps as presets and then they should both be available.  He gave me the steps, too:
    1.  Lightroom > Preferences > External Editing
    2.  Under Additional External Editor, clci the “Choose” button next to Application
    3.  Navigate to Applications folder and select Photoshop CS5
    4.  Set Editing attributes (File Format, Color Space, Bit Depth, Res)
    5.  Click on preset menu and select “Save Current Settings as New Preset”
    6.  Name the new Preset “Photoshop CS5” and click “Create”

  • How to install an external editor in version 2.1.1.64 for viewing XMLType

I have a question about viewing XMLType in version 2.1.1.64
If you want to view the content of an XMLType column in a data-tab, you can double click on the particular XMLType field and the edit button appears at the end. Push this edit button and an "Edit Dialog" popup appears with the data presented as one line.
Push the External Editor button and you get a dialog that informs you about the not supported mime type of the selected object. You can find the complete list of supported mime types in Tools->Preferences->External Editor panel. I like to use an external XML editor for viewing an xmltype column, can anyone put me on the right track? Change the Editor Location for the .xml file extension didn`t work.
    Kind regards,
    Erwin Snippert

    This is the case:
    SQL Developer version 2.1.1.64
    Oracle client 11gR2
    Oracle Database 9.2.0.6.
Under the table tree, on the left side of the screen, a table is selected with 3 columns. One of them is a XMLType column.
Click on the data tab on the right side of the screen and a part of the xml-data is visible of that XMLType column.
Perhaps my expectations are too high, i want to see the all XML data in a structured and readable way.
I have tried to accomplish this by double clicking on the particular data in the XMLType column. This results in an pencil icon on the right side of the data.
Click on this icon and a popup window appears with the 'Edit Value' titel. This windows shows the xml data as one string, not very readable.
I have the oppurtunity to click on an 'External Editor' button. It seems to me that i can use this button to see/edit the data with an external editor.
If you click on this button, a dialog appears with the following message : 'The Mime Type of selected object is currently not supported. Please see the complete list of supported Mime Type and extension in Tools>Preferences>External Editor panel.'
I have 2 questions, perhaps you can put me in the right direction :
    - Why can't SQL developer standard display XML in a structured/readable way?
    - How must SQL Developer be configured to use an external editor for displaying XML data from XMLType columns?
    Kind Regards, Erwin

  • How to change in External Editing from Edit in CS4 to CS5?

In LR 3.2 (was also in 3.0) Preferences/External Editing it says in the top position "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS4" even after reinstalling LR 3.2.
Originally I had installed CS4 and LR 2.7, then I installed CS5 and LR 3.0 but the top position remained with edit in PS CS4. Then I added CS5 as an additional external editor in the Preferences/External Editor, so far ok.
The problem: If I want to "Merge to HDR in PS" it goes to CS4 and not to CS5. I assume that it would go to CS5 if CS5 would be in the top position but I can't find out how I could change the top position from CS4 to CS5. Any hint would be appreciated as long as it does not say to reinstall CS5 and LR3.

It's a common problem. You'll need to reinstall CS5 as the Lr is getting the wrong key.

  • IPhoto BUG (aspect change in external editor)

This BUG in iPhoto is very annoying, try it yourself. Im suprised they havent fixed it over the years. How can I report it?
    • Take any landscape photo, EDIT in external editor (i use photoshop)
    • Crop the photo so its now portrait, & save. (i use a proportionally correct crop, but i think any landscape to portrait crop is the same)
    • back in iPhoto you can see the thumbnail of your new portrait photo but you cannot view it large because it forces a 100% zoom into one corner which you cant change.
This bug has been in iPhoto for years now, finally i guess i better report it because it seems no one else has. I cant find a way to do this on the apple website, is there a link?

Exact same problem- and I have the following
Ever since I have upgraded to iPhoto 11 I have discovered the following bug which is a right pain.
I take a photo with my Nikon at 3008 x 2000 pixels.  I put this photo into iPhoto.  Using command-I I pull up the metadata window.  Many times when I double click on the thumbnail the photo opens and immediately zooms to some ridiculous size.  A quick check in the Metadata window shows the reolution is no longer 3008 x 2000 but has changed to something like 1400x916.  Huh?  Duplicating that photo and then deleting the original - everything goes back to normal.  Shut the computer down and re-open and guess what?  now there's a bunch more photos with the exact same problem.  Some people have suggested rebuilding the thumbnails but come on guys - even after doing this random photos fall foul of this bug.  If it was just one or two I could perhaps live with it - but I've just had to correct over 200 photos.  Tedious or what?
And don't get me started on cropping in an external editor.  That's just a nightmare.  I've had to resort to cropping my photos first in iPhoto to prevent iPhoto "stetching" externally cropped photos to fit.  That seems to work.  This is undoubtedly the buggiest version of iPhoto that I'ver ever used.  It absolutely needs fixing.
And yes I have used the iPhoto feedback feature to complain to Apple about this.

  • LR2.3 change of External editor

from LR it is possible to use an external editor. As I had Element 6 installed on my PC beforehand, the default external editor has been set by LR to  Element 6.  I am using a second editor of choice Lightzone from Lightcraft.
Having expanded my Leica equipement with the M8, I have now also some need to use Capture one.
Is there any possibility to change the default setting on Lightroom to avoid having Element 6 as the first editor of choice and use the Capture One instead ?
Has anybody an idea on how to proceed.  Any help is appreciated. Thanks a lot. ... Francois

Hal, thank you for this response. Yes I tried. However, the Elements 6 editor seems to be "hard coded" and cannot be changed. I would like to have either Lightzone or Capture One as external editor available, as I use only seldom the Elements 6.
Any idea how to do it? De-install Elements 6, LR2.3 and then re-install LR2.3 ?
    With my best regards..... Francois
