How to? change to different paragraph style only after column/frame break

I'm all over paragraph styles and next styles option, all good, sweet. Love em but...
But when I'm flowing in a long document with multiple text frames on different pages I would like the first paragraph in each of those text frames to be paragraphy style A, then using next styles let it follow on through B, C, etc, till then next time it see's a column/page/frame break character then go back to heading style A.
I can't find a way to do this for love nor money.
I've used objecy styles with paragraphy styles and next style turned on but this only seams to work on the first text box not the remaining text boxes that have flowed on text.
HELP!!!!

For Paragraph Style A go to the Keep Options in the style, and select to Start on Next Page or Next Column or Next Frame - whichever suits.

If the content being flowed-in is correctly tagged with style names, then this would work.
However, I believe the OP wants any paragraph that follows a flow break to be tagged with a specific style. If this is correct, either a script or a plug-in is probably necessary. in-tools.com has some terrific commercial composition tool products; perhaps one can do at least the first step - assigning a style to a paragraph that follows a break.
In InDesign, assigning specific styles to the subsequent paragraphs based on the Next Style property, requires selecting the paragraphs to be assigned. I'm not sure if there's a plug-in or script that can use the break to trigger the Apply Next Style feature.
Then, of course, is the question of how should this automation work if editing causes text to reflow across breaks. It's possible this could become the "yo-yo" effect that happens when more consecutive paragraphs than can fit in a text container are tagged with the keep options next and previous.

  • How do I use multiple paragraph styles in one line?

I'm working on my thesis in APA style.  I'm creating a Table of Contents with the help of Pages.  When you get to Level 3 in APA headings (no problems with Levels 1 and 2) it needs to look like this:
[0.5in Indent] Masculinities in higher education.  For men, the college experience.... (paragraph starts on same line as the heading).
I created a paragraph style for the (bolded) heading above [Heading 3].  When I do this, like magic the heading shows up in the table of contents (yeah!).  However when I do this the rest of the paragraph shows up too (boo!).  When I highlight to change the just rest of the paragraph (not the heading) to the style "Body" it changes the heading too and removes it from the table of contents.  How can I make 2 paragraph styles work together in the same paragraph so I can use the tale of contents tool??  Surly there is a work-around.
    Pages 5

As the name implies, paragraph styles are not intended to be used on a unit smaller than a paragraph. Therefore if you want the TOC to be automatically generated then you need to have distinct  paragraphs... as you specify the APA style with the content and heading continuous then you will have to manually create the TOC.

  • Changes to [No Paragraph Style] causing unwanted style overrides

    Hi fellow InDesigners
I'm using InDesign CS6. I'm working with long documents that were originally created in previous versions (CS4 and possibly earlier). My standard workflow for these jobs is to do the bulk of the text formatting in a newly created, bare-bones, single column document. First, I load the paragraph and character styles from the template, and when I'm done I copy and paste the formatted text back into the template for final layout and typesetting. This used to work fine in CS4, but in CS6, all my paragraphs show the plus sign in the Paragraph Styles panel, indicating that they have been overridden. They should be identical, since I imported the styles from one file to the other. The overrides include drop cap alignment, and even more obscure things like 'IdeoSpaceBehavior' and 'Diacritic Positioning'.
It seems likely to me that this problem is due to Adobe having changed the definition of the mysteriously ubiquitous '[No Paragraph Style]' style between versions. The template file has carried over the definition from CS4, but the newly created working files have the new definition, and since [No Paragraph Style] is not included when importing styles from one document to another, the inconsistency remains. Copying and pasting text with no overrides in one document, shows overrides in the other.
So the simplest solution I can think of, would be to change the [No Paragraph Style] in the template to match the definition of new CS6 documents. Is this even possible? My Googling thus far suggests that [No Paragraph Style] is pretty much untouchable.
Is there nothing for it but to create the template files again as new documents in CS6?

No worries Michael. Yes, I vaguely remember the change too.
My understanding is, [No Paragraph Style] is very much a style—a paradoxically named style to be sure, but a style nonetheless. Check out the [Basic Paragraph] style definition by double clicking on it in the Paragraph Styles panel. It's style definition is: '[No Paragraph Style] + next: [Same style]'. That's it. Minion Pro 12 point, with auto leading—and every other conceivable paragraph attribute—all handled by [No Paragraph Style]. Adobe needed some defaults, and that's what [No Paragraph Style] is—just a default style. You can never escape it either, since every style, no matter what it's based on, has [No Paragraph Style] as its most senior ancestor.
So that's essentially my problem. Adobe has, in their wisdom, changed the [No Paragraph Style] style between versions, so that a document originally created in an earlier version and a document created in CS6 have different [No Paragraph Style] settings. I'm pretty confident this is the cause of my problems.
Lots of my paragraph styles inherit from other styles. Why would I not want that? My custom 'Paragraph' style has lots of other styles based on it—from typesetting variations, to quotes, lists, etc. But the 'Paragraph' style itself is based on [No Paragraph Style]. As I said, you can't really escape [No Paragraph Style].

  • Different paragraph styles within a text thread

Does anybody know if it's possible to apply a different paragraph style to each text box in a text thread? I have three boxes: the first and the last have a small font and I'd like the middle one to have a larger font size.
If it's not possible, is there an alternative way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Nacho

Offhand i'd say that what Nacho wants to do will entail having separate text boxes...
Seems to me that what he's doing is having the text flow from one box to another (column?). Obviously, changing / editing content will cause the text to shift its position.
Nacho, i think you'll have to do one of the following:
1/ Manually adjust the font style for the box you want each time you mke a correction
    or
2/ Set up different, independent boxes (text areas) and style the box the way you want. Obviously changing text will mean changes in the area used by that box...
Maybe someone else here can help out with a better suggestion...

  • Can you apply different paragraph styles for each orientation?

I would like to apply different paragraph styles to the text, depending if it is viewed on portrait or landscape mode, but everytime I change one the other changes automatically. Is there a way to break this link?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, iBA doesn't provide a lever to pull that can make a particular text style orientation specific.

    Hi, Yanesh:
Please understand, the FrameMaker feature known as a run-in paragraph, which is a paragraph with a "carriage return" but without a "line feed," HAS NO COUNTERPART in InDesign. InDesign also lacks the FrameMaker side heading feature, which is created by the combination of a reserved area in the text frame and the paragraph property to inhabit that area. FrameMaker separates paragraphs by using the larger of space below paragraph and space above paragraph, but InDesign separates paragraphs by adding the space below paragraph and the space above paragraph.
There are several complicated manual methods of simulating these FrameMaker properties in InDesign.
Here's a recent forum discussion of these exact issues: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3759635#3759635. The thread mentions DTP Tools' conversion tool, the MIF Filter commercial plug-in for InDesign, and discusses its shortcomings. I don't recall it mentioning in-tools.com plug-ins that can simulate side headings, like those in FrameMaker, but they don't convert FrameMaker to InDesign.
You can add your vote for InDesign's developers to include these FrameMaker features, and any others you'd like to see, here: wish.

It's not something that's natively done with Indesign.
However it's possible that it might be able to be scripted.

  • Apply different font styles in single text frame

    hi all
how can i apply different font styles in a single text frame using indesign script ?
    for example :
    "dasdnasndasndlasndnasdlasdasdas"
may i know is it possible to do that and how to do that ?
    thanks

You can set (as well as read) every single property of any text range with scripts. This is javascript; it assumes you text cursor is inside a frame with some text.
    * Setting some specific characters to a color:
    app.selection[0].parentStory.characters.itemByRange(5,10).fillColor = "Red";
    * Change the font of words:
    app.selection[0].parentStory.words[3].appliedFont = "Arial\tBold";
    * .. or just the style:
    app.selection[0].parentStory.lines[2].fontStyle = "Italic";
    * .. or any other attribute (this one requires you to have at least 5 characters selected):
    app.selection[0].characters[5].underline = true;
Of course these operations are not limited to something you select; they work the same with any text frames you can refer to.
    app.activeDocument.textFrames[1].paragraphs[2].appliedCharacterStyle = "charstyle";

  • How to change the year in a range of column dates to the new year?

How to change the year in a range of column dates to the new year?

Depends on the pattern of the dates. The last procedure will work for any pattern, or no pattern at all.
For examples.the dates are assumed to be in column A, starting at A2
    Sequential dates?
Enter first updated date in the first cell.
Enter =A2+1 in cell A3. Copy the cell.
Select A3 to the end of the list. Paste.
With the cells still selected, Copy, then go Edit > Paste Values.
    Evenly spaced dates?
Same procedure as above, but replace +1 in the formula with + and the number of days between dates in the list.
    Randomly spaced dates?
Select cell B2. Press option-left arrow to insert a (temporary) column to the left of column B.
Click on the empty cell B2 in the new column. Enter the formula below:
    =DATE(YEAR(A)+1,MONTH(A),DAY(A))
Copy the cell, then select B2 - Bn where n is the last ow containing a date to be converted. Paste,
With the cells still selected, Copy.
Click on A2, then go Edit > Paste values.
Click on the column B reference tab to select all of column B.
Hover the mouse over the right end of the reference tab, and click the black triangle when it appears.
Choose Delete Column from the menu that appears.

  • How do I change the default paragraph style from Body Text?

The default paragraph style in my email setup is Body Text. This does not wrap properly for some recipients, but Paragraph does. How do I change the default so that Paragraph is automatically used when I start a new email?

There are two types of defaults: defaults for all new documents and defaults for the current document. To change the default for any open document make sure no text frame is active and change the formatting as desired in either the Control panel or the Character and Paragraph panels. To change default formatting for new document (those not yet created) do this while no file is open. You can’t change the defaults for several documents at once without a script.

  • How do I show table paragraph styles in keynote 6.1 (mac)?

    Hi community,
I am tryying to apply changes to paragraph styles in keynote 6.1 (mac). But in the list which opens when i click in the triangle only the basis paragraph styles are seen.
Any ideas how and whre i can find theses styles.
    Thanks

I am sorry that I cannot make myself clear - perhaps because of my language competence
    1) There is a table style (for the whole table)
And there are PARAGRAPH-styles for the text-attributes of the text in the table-cells (bold, italic, size, font etc.). I would call this a paragraph-style. This can be seen here:
But this style cannot be edited or changed because it does not show up in the dropdown of the parapgrah-styles - as can be seen here:
You DO NOT FIND the paragraph-style ("Absatzstil" in German) "Tabellenstil 1" in the dropdown.

  • How do you automatically create paragraph styles from a document?

    Hi,
(posted in general indesign as well - advised to post over here)
I know I've seen this somewhere but can't for the life of me find it...
How can I automatically create paragraph and character styles in an InDesign CC document? I'm sure I saw a script to do this and though I'll download that later...only i can't find it now.
The scenario is that I have a document created by someone else which has lots of paragraph styles, but each one has over-rides on (so they're not really much use). I'm wanting something that will go through the document and create all the different styles that have been used.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi
I was given this tip to try: PerfectPrepText (http://indesignsecrets.com/perfectpreptext-a-smart-way-to-style-local-formatting.php) but couldn't get it to do what i was after unfortunately...however it did point me in the direction of something that does the trick:
PowerStyles (DTP Tools - Power Styles for Adobe InDesign).
Not sure if it's available for CC yet though.
    Thanks
