How to change users short name in 10.7 Server version?  Command line possible?

I just migrated from Snow Leo 10.6 Server to Lion 10.7 server.  All seems ok except for one user (me!).  It seems my short name is different.  It was Goerge Smith but now it is just George.   And All users can login and get mail etc, but not me.
I try to reset password using Updated Workgroup utiliity and new Server App, but the app refuses to allow rest of password or chnage of short user name.
All other users seem ok and their names, atributes, passwords can be easily reset.   So both Open Directoty and NDS ( all the normal cast of troublemakes) do not seem to be at issue.
Clearly something odd or unexpected happened in migration of Open Directory users and attributes.
How can I change my User Shortname Back to the correct one?  Or Any ideas why my Password is locked, and cannot be reset?
I have rebooted sveral times, all other functions seem normal and working?  Mystified!!   Help?

Someone in the Lion Server Forum might know?

Colin R.

  • How to change a setting in the Java Control Panel with command line

    Hi,
I am trying to figure out how to change a setting in the Java Control Panel with command line or with a script. I want to enable "Use SSL 2.0 compatible ClientHello format"
I can't seem to find any documentation on how to change settings in the Java Control Panel via the command line
    Edited by: 897133 on Nov 14, 2011 7:15 AM

OK figured it out. This is for the next person seeking the same solution.
When you click on the Java Control Panel (found in the Control panel) in any version of Windows, it first looks for a System Wide Java Configuration (found here: C:\Windows\Sun\Java\Deployment). At this point you must be wondering why you don't have this folder (C:\Windows\Sun\Java\Deployment) or why its empty. Well, for an enterprise environment, you have to create it and place something in it - it doesn't exist by default. So you'll need a script (I used Autoit) to create the directory structure and place the the two files into it. The two files are "deployment.properties" and "deployment.config".
Example: When you click on the Java Control Panel it first checks to see if this directory exists (C:\Windows\Sun\Java\Deployment) and then checks if there is a "deployment.config". If there is one it opens it and reads it. If it doesn't exist, Java creates user settings found here C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment on Windows 7.
    __deployment.config__
It should look like this inside:
    *#deployment.config*
    *#Mon Nov 14 13:06:38 AST 2011*
*# The First line below specifies if this config is mandatory which is simple enough*
*# The second line just tells Java where to the properties of your Java Configuration*
*# NOTE: These java settings will be applied to each user file and will overwrite existing ones*
    deployment.system.config.mandatory=True
    deployment.system.config=file\:C\:/WINDOWS/Sun/Java/Deployment/deployment.properties
If you look in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment on Windows 7 for example you will find "deployment.properties". You can use this as your default example and add your settings to it.
    How?
Easy. If you want to add *"Use SSL 2.0 compatible ClientHello format"*
    Add this line:
    deployment.security.SSLv2Hello=true
Maybe you want to disable Java update (which is a big problem for enterprises)
    Add these lines:
    deployment.javaws.autodownload=NEVER
    deployment.javaws.autodownload.locked=
Below is a basic AutoIt script you could use (It compiles the files into the executable. When you compile the script the two Java files must be in the directory you specify in the FileInstall line, which can be anything you choose. It will also create your directory structure):
    #NoTrayIcon
    #RequireAdmin
    #Region ;**** Directives created by AutoIt3Wrapper_GUI ****
    #AutoIt3Wrapper_UseX64=n
    #EndRegion ;**** Directives created by AutoIt3Wrapper_GUI ****
    Func _JavaConfig()
         $ConfigFile_1 = @TempDir & "\deployment.properties"
         $ConfigFile_2 = @TempDir & "\deployment.config"
         FileInstall ("D:\My Documents\Autoit\Java config\deployment.properties", $ConfigFile_1)
    FileInstall ("D:\My Documents\Autoit\Java config\deployment.config", $ConfigFile_2)
         FileCopy($ConfigFile_1, @WindowsDir & "\Sun\Java\Deployment\", 9)
         FileCopy($ConfigFile_2, @WindowsDir & "\Sun\Java\Deployment\", 9)
         Sleep(10000)
         FileDelete(@TempDir & "\deployment.properties")
         FileDelete(@TempDir & "\deployment.config")
    EndFunc
    _JavaConfig()
Now if you have SCUP and have setup Self Cert for your organization, you just need to create a SCUP update for JRE.

  • How to change the "short name (account name?)" and home directory name?

    Hi,
I recently purchased a new iMac and migrated account info from my MacBook Pro.  I happened to use random account name during migration without knowing it will not be easy to change the short name (account name?) and home directory name.  As a result, I am now having extremely confusing short name and home directory name on my new iMac.
I did online search to find out how to change the two names, but I could only found somethig like "enabiling root user and....."  I have no idea what it was talking about and I don't want to take risk altering such advance set up manually.
Please advice how I can change the short name and home directory name safely without much PC knowledge.
Thank you very much in advance.

There are a few ways of doing this. The easiest method is logging into the first account and copying everything to an external drive (or flash drive or whatever), which changes the permissions so that others can see the files.
Then, login with the new account and copy the files over. Once they are copied, the correct permissions will be applied again (so other people on your computer can't access them).
If you can't do this method for one reason or other, you can do some terminal commands to change the ownership of the files. Login to the new account. If it is an admin account, open terminal and type the following command:
    sudo chown -R -v yourusername:admin /Users/originalaccountnamehere
That should change the ownership of the files from your old account to the new one. At that point, you can simply drag the files into place.

  • How to change the short name????

i bought this iBook G4 off a friend and i was only able to change the name and pass on the account part and was not able to change the short name... it a chicks name so i dont want that to show on there,, does anybody know how to change that ??? thanks

Just a general reply this, but I had to click on 'Reply' to someone's post...
It strikes me as very strange that something with such devastating consequences is even provided as an option in Finder. How many posts have there been saying "Help, all my settings/docs/music have gone!" or similar, and the poster having to be walked through the remedial steps? What useful purpose can there be to being able to rename the 'short name', and therefore the 'Home' folder, with a control-click?
Dr Smoke has a 'Recovering from Re-naming you Home folder', and presumably there is a Knowledge base # for it too. Surely the simplest thing to do would be, in a future SW Update, to remove that Finder option entirely. If it's necessary for some diagnostic purposes to rename, then let there be a more arcane way of doing it, surely.
Just my humble opinion, of course...
& yes Jon, my reply to Ozzman was curt, unhelpful and non instructive. I apologise for that. It was late & I'd been up since 5am. I should have left well alone if I wasn't prepared to more helpful.

  • Login name appears as full name - how to change to short name?

My user name for login on previous versions of OS X always appeared as the "short name". Since I installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard, the user name in login boxes appears as my full name instead. How do I make the short name appear instead? (I'm a bit OCD, otherwise I'm sure it really doesn't matter...)

I still don't know whether it's because of the server connection, but I re-installed SL on another Mac on my network - and it did it again. Initially, when I do the install, the account I create shows as Admin. After a couple of reboots, though, it invariably becomes "Admin, Managed" - and the parental controls are turned on.
The fix is easy, as suggested above:
= create a second Admin account,
= log out of the first account,
= log in as the new Admin account,
= remove the Parental Controls checkmark from the first account,
= log out of the new account, and
= log back into the first account.
Irritating to have to do, but the Admin setting seems to stick after this process. You can delete the new account once you have fixed the settings on the real Admin account.
If your issue is a little different than this, you might want to go ahead and start a new thread. Since this one is marked answered, it might get little notice.

  • How to change the machine name for the admin server?

Hi, I've incorrectly set the machine name for my admin server. I now need to change this, but it's not editable (WLS 10.3.3).
Is there a way to edit configuration files to get it changed?
    Thanks
    Jason

Seems all I needed to do was edit config/config.xml (under my domain's path) and change the machine name manually (before shutting the admin server down).

  • How to change user account's Short Name

Hopefully this is a fairly simple question.
When I installed OX 10.3 I mispelled my short name, and now I'm can't find how to change it.
Reffering specifically to: System Preference>Accounts>Short Name
It's not super important, but would be handier to have it displaying correct for networking.
If anyone can let me know how to change the short name, and any issues that may result from changing it, it would be great.
    Thanks for any input

    Hi baobhanjex!
Here is a direct link that usually works, to the utility ChangeShortName by Dan Frakes.
Read all of the instructions carefully, and proceed cautiously, as an improper change can result in unwanted results.

  • Changing the short name at migration?

Rather than upgrading from Tiger to Leopard, I backed everything up on an external drive in order to do a clean install. When I to migrate I want to change the short name, or somehow bring what was under a previous account into a new one with a different name. Is this possible? Is it a matter of dragging and dropping folder rather than migration? (or would that mean not migrating applications?)
I can provide more details if needed.

No, you cannot change an account name via Migration Assistant. If you want to change the short name do so after migrating. Instructions are here:
How to change user short name or home directory name
Or, download the freeware utility ChangeShortName - VersionTracker or MacUpdate - and use it to change the shortname.
    I suggest the latter.
If you create a new user account with the name you prefer and want to get your old account information into the new account then see this article:

    Hi,
I'm on a a MacbookPro5.5 and for some reason, my Home name (that resides on the left sidebar) is still listed as 'Apple'.
I want to change the Home name and so I've right-clicked it and gone into the 'Get Info' window. But the Name field is greyed out and won't let me enter a new name. I've tried changing all privledges to 'read and write' but that does not seem to help at all.
I appreciate any pointers on this ...

    Hello Gopi Anne ,
You can use the following FM / BAPI :
    BAPI_USER_CHANGE
    MY_BAPI_USER_CHANGE
    For BAPI_USER_CHANGE :
You need to make use of the IMPORT parameter :

  • Change (rename) short names on existing Users

Working on the Workgroup Manager with the Apple XServer 10.4.10, and I wonder if there was a code or script to change the “short name” of the users accounts as well as having the new (rename)“short name” stay the default short name. I don’t want the “old” short name to exist on the user account. Is there a process through the terminal program I can make this change?
    Thank you,

The simple answer is 'no.' But if you're really bent on it, Apple documents the process of creating a new user and integrating the old user's files. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106824 (updated 2005 so i assume the process has not changed)
I believe this is targeted at OS X client, as a standalone. The process for an OpenDirectory account may differ.
Also, there is a utility called ChangeShortName that supposedly automates this process at www.danfrakes.com. I haven't run it and I believe it's intended for standalone OS X clients -- I have no idea what it'd do on a server. I think it's one of those "run at your own risk" things.

  • How can I change the "short name" of my account?

I want to change the short name of my account because when my dad bought this computer for me he set up the account with his name as the short name and it has been bothering me ever since.
When I go to system preferences and then accounts my account is listed and when I click on it under password I am able to change my name, but not my short name because it is greyed out and cannot be clicked. Is there any way to change the short name on my account? I can't even delete my account and make a new one because the account delete button is greyed out when I click on my account.
Also, I went to my home folder and changed that from my dad's name to my name. This has reset every program on my computer to default settings! For example when I open my Safari browser a message pops up saying a keychain cannot be found to store Safari and asks me if I want to restore default settings.
So pretty much I've tried to change the short name on my administrative account, I reset everything to default settings and my short name is still my father's name. Can anyone help me out here?

    Try this.
Or you could just create a new account and delete the old one.

  • She's arrived.... and... how do you change ur short name?

Upon waking up this morning I did my daily routine of tracking my shipment to my wonderful surprise it had been delivered. I live on the apartment side of campus so if you aren't there they take it to the housing office.
I guess nobody heard the bell because it said they tried at 9 o clock.Anyways, I just came back from there and I'm setting it up now. I love it.
    But yea the question is.....
is there a way to change my short name in my account settings. I typed the wrong thing the first time.
