Hi y - Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Hi all,
I just purchased my MBP yesterday. I'm totally new to
this machine. I don't know how to see CPU speed, RAM,
or other hardwares on this computer.
click on the blue apple in the upper left corner of your display (a drop menu will open) then click on About This Mac.
a window pops up. some basic system info is shown there.
for all the add'l details, click on More Info...
that will open up the System Profiler which lists everything hardware- and software-wise...
the System Profiler is also sitting in Applications > Utilities, and you can also start it by double-clicking on its icon there..
    Also, I don't
know if the apple button use for what? I press
    "apple" and nothing happens.
the apple button on the keyboard is a "command key".
i.e. most applications will quit if you enter the key combination apple+Q.
save is apple+S, and so on.
    Last, could someone tell
me how to optimize the computer? I had 80GB but now I
have only 57GB availble. I don't know why this MBP
    uses so much space.
fairly typical. the default installation process writes language
localizations, many many printer drivers, and other things
you may not need. you can use the application monolingual
to remove language localizations that you don't want (download
it from versiontracker). printer drivers are generally smaller,
but some like keeping that to a minimum...
also if iLife is installed including GarageBand - there might be some GB of
'garageband loops' you might not need.
so, all in all, how much you might be able to clean up depends on how
you want to use your machine... post back w/ any details if you like...
Thanks again for all your help. I will have more
    questions for you
P/S: I couldn't find these info by search.
    enjoy your new machine!!! cheers

  • How to check the speeds of internal fans

Hello. Concerning the defective logic board that causes fans to run fast, some people have implied that there are applications that allow you to check the RPMs of internal fans. I searched MacUpdate and VersionTracker with no vail. Does anyone know of any such application?
    Thanks.

The mentioned aps are very good. But if you just want a quick check of the fan speeds, open a terminal window and type the following command:
    ioreg -w 0 -n IOHWControl|grep "target-value\|location"
    The output is the following:
    | | | | "location" = "System Fan"
    | | | | "target-value" = 1700
    | | | | "location" = "CPU fan"
    | | | | "target-value" = 1500
    | | | "location" = "Hard Drive"
    | | | "target-value" = 2300
    | | | "location" = "sysclk slew"
    | | | "target-value" = 0

  • How do I copy files from Mac Book Mountain Lion 10.8.3 to a Seagate External Hard Drive

    please help

Have you connected the drive to your computer?  Is the drive formatted for a Mac?  Can you see the drive either on the desktop or in the sidebar of a Finder window?  Are you able to (double) click on the drive icon to open it up in Finder? If yes to these, you should just be able to drag and drop.

  • How to check the speed of agilent 34907a

Hope i am not duplicating my previous post. But i am not able to locate my previous post so i assume that it has not been posted yet.
The clarification i want to make is as follws:
I am reading data from a keithley sourcemeter through a GPIB cable and then process it and then write a digital output value to agilent 34907a multifunction module card and write the time ,GPIB data and the digital value into an excel sheet.
i want the whole cycle to run as fast as possible.
So I created a sequence of two frames(ref attached picture ) first frame reads GPIB data and second frame processes the data and writes output to agilent digital output module.
i have put this sequence inside a continous while loop.
There is no delay inserted anywhere.
The excel sheet shows a time difference about 60 msec +/2 sec between consecutive time readings.which means the output module has recieved a data every 60 msec .but i am not sure if it is able to execute the  commands it recieves or some commands ignored.
a.I can see alternate values being written in the display with no error. so does this mean all the write commands are executed?
b.does the nest while loop start only after the end of the write process?
c.Currenly i am using a rs232 cable as interface at 9600 baud rate can increasing this bring down the time from 60 msec?
your help would be highly appreciated
    regards
    Siva

Your previous posting of this question was in the LabWINDOWS forum. You can find any of your previous postings by clicking on your forum "name", it will show you every posting you have made.
I am unable to view your image attachment, it is too low resolution. You can attach source code, if it isn't too large, to your postings, just make sure to identify which version of LabVIEW was used.
You say that your excel spreadsheet shows a time difference of 60 msec +/2 sec  what does +/2 mean? Plus or minus 2 seconds would be big if the expected/desired loop rate is 60 mS.  I don't know whether any commands are being ignored, you would probably get an error if it wasn't able to execute a command in time. If you are looping at 60 mS you won't be able to visually if a command is dropped, but depending on what it is (like output a level) it probably can handle it, that is only 17 S/sec roughly. The 34907a doesn't have a BW rating for the analog output that I could find, looks like it is expected to be used in more or less a static voltage source mode, but it does spec a 1 mS settling time, which should fall within your limits, assuming you are doing the next in measurement too soon.

  • How do i know if my mac book is working on N speed

I just bought the new airport extreme and there is a software that allow to change the configuration of the mac books from G speed to N. I check that i have that software installed, but i don't know how to make it work. I don't know if it is working but i surely don't feel any difference on the speed of my network.
If somebody can help me telling me how to check is my mac book is working on N will be really appreciated.
Also, can somebody tell me how many kb/sec is N speed and G speed. And how to se at what speed I<m tranfering data between my macbook and my external drive.
    thanks

Log out and log back in, if you haven’t done so recently. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
Post the lines of output, if any, that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
Repeat with this line (triple-click anywhere in it to select the whole line):
    find /Applications /System/Library/CoreServices -type d -name *.app -exec defaults read {}/Contents/Info LSEnvironment \; 2> /dev/null | grep DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
If you get no output from either step, you're not infected with any variant of Flashback that I know of.

  • How do I copy photos from my Mac to my iPad without deleting the ones that are there?

I understand how to sync photos from my iPhoto library to my iPad. I want to copy photos from my Mac to the iPad without syncing, because syncing deletes everything on the iPad that isn't included in my sync selections. In addition,I have several iPhoto libraries and want to copy photos from each of them to the iPad. A further issue is that apparently photos can be synced from only one computer to the iPad -- how would I copy photos from a different computer? (What happens when I buy a new Mac?) I am extremely experienced with Mac, iPhoto/Aperture, iPad, etc. A year or two ago I transferred 1000 photos to the iPad but I don't remember how, and it was probably done with my previous Mac. Now I just want to add some recent photos without deleting the ones that are there. Bottom line: is there a way to add photos to an iPad without syncing and losing what's there?

You can still sync the photos and keep the photos that are already on the device. You have to include all of the albums or events in the pictures folder that you sync from. If you are using iPhoto, select that in the Sync Photos from drop down menu and then select all of the albums or events that you want to sync. Make sure to check Selected Albums, events, faces and automatically include (no events). Using that option will allow you to choose exactly which albums and events to sync.
You have to remember that all photos must be included in every sync so you cannot sync photos from iPhoto today and then try to sync photos from another folder tomorrow, or you will erase all of the photos that were synced from iPhoto. You need to maintain one main Photos syncing folder for the photos that you want to transfer to the iPad. You can have subfolders within that one main folder and you can selectively sync those subfolders. You just have to place all of the photos that you want to sync into one main iPad syncing photos folder.
There are WiFi transfer apps that allow you to transfer photos to the iPad without having to sync with iTunes. I use this one. This app (and others like it) will allow you to use multiple computers to transfer photos.

  • How to speed up Mac OS X

Very slow processing.  Any ideas of what to do?  Deleted cookies already.

If you can add more RAM, that's a start. Also, a faster hard drive if you can replace the hard drive. Then see:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions About Mac Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utility is: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior for defragmentation of older drives, disk repair, disk scans, formatting, partitioning, disk copy, and benchmarking.
Four outstanding sources of information on Mac maintenance are:
    1. OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney.
    2. Mac maintenance Quick Assist
    3. Maintaining Mac OS X
    4. Mac Maintenance Guide
    Periodic Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) See Mac OS X- About background maintenance tasks. If you are running Leopard or later these tasks are run automatically, so there is no need to use any third-party software to force running these tasks.
If you are using a pre-Leopard version of OS X, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced after Tiger.  (These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion and should not be installed.)
    Defragmentation
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive except when trying to install Boot Camp on a fragmented drive. But you don't need to buy third-party software. All you need is a spare external hard drive and Carbon Copy Cloner.
    Cheap and Easy Defragmentation
You will have to backup your OS X partition to an external drive, boot from the external drive, use Disk Utility to repartition and reformat your hard drive back to a single volume, then restore your backup to the internal hard drive. You will use Carbon Copy Cloner to create the backup and to restore it.
      1. Get an empty external hard drive and clone your internal drive to the
           external one.
      2. Boot from the external hard drive.
      3. Erase the internal hard drive.
      4. Restore the external clone to the internal hard drive.
Clone the internal drive to the external drive
      1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
      2. Select the Source volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      3. Select the Destination volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      4. Be sure the Block Copy button is not depressed or is ghosted.
      5. Click on the Clone button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive and click on the upward pointing arrow button.
    After startup do the following:
    Erase internal hard drive
      1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      2. After DU loads select your internal hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the
drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is
failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be
reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the
           DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the
drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended
(Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to
GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait
           until the process has completed.
Restore the clone to the internal hard drive
      1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
      2. Select the Source volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      3. Select the Destination volume from the left side dropdown menu.
      4. Be sure the Block Copy button is not selected or is ghosted.
      5. Click on the Clone button.
Destination means the internal hard drive. Source means the external startup drive.
Note that the Source and Destination drives are swapped for this last procedure.
    Malware Protection
As for malware protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. Starting with Lion, Apple has included built-in malware protection that is automatically updated as necessary. To assure proper protection, update your system software when Apple releases new OS X updates for your computer.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection:
    1. Mac Malware Guide.
    2. Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware
    3. Macintosh Virus Guide
For general anti-virus protection I recommend only using ClamXav, but it is not necessary if you are keeping your computer's operating system software up to date. You should avoid any other third-party software advertised as providing anti-malware/virus protection. They are not required and could cause the performance of your computer to drop.
    Cache Clearing
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner 7.0.9, Maintenance 1.6.8, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache files can cause slowness, kernel panics, and other issues. Although this is not a frequent nor a recurring problem, when it does happen there are tools such as those above to fix the problem.
If you are using Snow Leopard or earlier, then for emergency cleaning install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. (AppleJack works with Snow Leopard or earlier.)
    Installing System Updates or Upgrades
Repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand.
Update your backups in case an update goes bad.
    Backup and Restore
Having a backup and restore strategy is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your computer. Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. You can never have too many backups. Don't rely on just one. Make several using different backup utilities. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
         1. Carbon Copy Cloner
         2. Get Backup
         3. Deja Vu
         4. SuperDuper!
         5. Synk Pro
         6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance and backup and restore.
Always have a current backup before performing any system updates or upgrades.
    Final Suggestions
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity or 20 GBs, whichever is greater, as free space. Avoid installing utilities that rely on Haxies, SIMBL, or that alter the OS appearance, add features you will rarely if ever need, etc. The more extras you install the greater the probability of having problems. If you install software be sure you know how to uninstall it. Avoid installing multiple new software at the same time. Install one at a time and use it for a while to be sure it's compatible.
