  • "Filter failed" in CUPS when using IPP (HP LaserJet 500 color M551)

I have two ArchLinux machines, one with HP LaserJet 500 color M551 connected over USB and another one on the same network. Printing over network (ipp) doesn't work: CUPS on the client says "Filter failed", so the job doesn't even reach the server. Printing directly from the server works perfectly fine, there's no "Filter failed" message and it just prints.
Both machines have the same ArchLinux installation, they are both x86_64, they have hpijs installed and the same PPD selected. This WiKi entry didn't help and the printer differs from the one discussed here, so it doesn't seem to be a well-known issue. :-(
I tried to reinstall the printer on the client many times, using both DNSSD and direct URI input. All this seems to work fine. The filter that fails is probably /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpps, but I have no idea how to get debugging info from it, i.e., why it fails etc. The same filter works just fine on the server.
I thought this might have something to do with the distinction between PostScript and the HP PCL variants. Enabling Adobe TBCP should fix this by adding the appropriate binary metadata and escaping things as needed... However, switching TBCP on in the CUPS printer settings stopped the printer from working. The printer appeared to be OK and responsive, but simply didn't print anything. Disabling TBCP fixed this on the server, but the client shows the "Filter failed" message, no matter what's happening on the server.

I have similar problems with network printing (from various 32-bit and 64-bit Arch systems) producing 'Filter failed' messages, while directly printing from the CUPS server - with USB connection to the device - works as expected. My all-in-one device is an HP Photosmart C4480 and everything worked fine a few weeks ago. (Ironically, I can get network scanning using Xsane!) I've tried reinstalling, and various drivers to no avail.
It's very frustrating, and I think I've tried everything suggested in the Wiki.

  • Is there a way to change the default print tray on an HP LaserJet 500 color M551 Printer

    Hi
Is there a way to setup the default print tray for a HP LaserJet 500 color M551 printer to be tray 2 printing both online and direct?
If so what would be the best way to go about implementing it?
    Thanks
    This question was solved.

Usually, you can change the default paper trays through the control panel and through the Embedded Web server (EWS).
Check the settings on your control panel. Here is a link to the User Guide, check out page 94 and see if that helps you out.
    m551 User Guide
For the EWS, put the printer IP address into your browser, then go to the tab that would list tray settings. Not sure exactly which tab has it for this printer series, but on other printer series it is on the system tab under paper setup.

  • Connect HP Printer (Laserjet 500 color M551), to 2 wireless networks.

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to connect the formentioned printer(*) to 2 wifi's we have in work. Let's say WNet1 & Wnet2.
So that everyone connected in those 2 Wireless Networks, can print.
(Details: the printer is already set up for WNet1, and is working fine. But half of us can't connect to WNet1, so we have WNet2 for that reason. The printer is "in range" for both WNetworks, that will not be an issue )

  • LaserJet 500 color M551 - tray 2 doesn't close

I don't quite know the circumstances that lead to this happening, but looks like, all the sudden, tray 2 just wouldn't close. Just about when it should close, i feel some resistance maybe from the back of the tray, but not sure. I spent quite some time looking for any clues, such as anything bent, broken, warped, etc, but found nothing. Tried a lot of things, including resets and whatnot, but nothing worked. So i tried something that, right now, i know i shouldn't have; i got the tray from another M551 here at the office, just to see if it was something with the tray, and now... the tray on the other one ALSO doesn't close.  There was no forcing, bending, slamming, nothing like that. Just brough the tray over, put it in, saw it wouldn't close, brought it back, and it wouldn't close on the original, none of the trays do on any of the 2 printers. What's going on with these things???

Found a temporary fix... that includes removing a partThis is being caused by the lock not engaging properly. I have no idea what the designation for any of these parts is, i'll just make things up and hope they make any sense. There is a guide with a pin on back of the tray , that goes into the lock. I would assume that, once the pin touches the lock, the lock would "pull" the tray in, that's how it seemed to work. The way it's happening right now, the lock is still engaging but not pulling the tray in, causing an obstruction that won't let the tray close. It's possible to manually arm the lock by pushing a tab nearby, tried multiple times, but i couldn't get it to sync. So i just removed the pin from the guide on the tray, and that bypasses the lock. Now the tray closes and the printer functions properly, it just behaves like trays without lock.  Not ideal, but as long as it works i'm fine with it. May not be a bad solution actually, just as "preventive measure" - one less things to malfunction. If someone knows how to fix, reset or whatever needs to be done to the lock, i'd still like to know\o

  • LaserJet 500 color MFP M575 ePrint

I have enable ePrint on my new HP LaserJet 500 color MFP M575 when I first got it. A lot of changes to the configuration has now been done and ePrint does not work anymore.
I tried to reset it, disabling and re-enabling HP Web Services on the embedded web server, but the tab for "HP Web Services" does not ever come back even after a reboot. I also disabled the Web Services, rebooted and re-enable them and rebooted again, that also did not bring back the "HP Web Services" tab.
Because the tab never comes back I can't get the new code for the printer.
I have the only firmware available for that printer, the one dated the 12th of April 2012.
I really don't know what to do now.

    Hello BMagny,
It sounds like you may need to preform a semi-full reset on the printer.  I cannot give you instructions on how to do this over the forums, instead you will need to contact tech support directly.  You can find the number here.

  • I could not enable web services on my laserjet 500 colour M551 printer

I could not enable web service on laserjet 500 colour M551 printer but i proper configure the ip & dns. The internet is working properly from laptop or desktop on this lan port. what to do?

    @garytech1,
Wouldn't inputting those settings disrupt their connectivity within their own network?
Why would those IP settings work?
Curious, mostly.  I have 25 of the M551 units on our network and every last one of them has the sticker saying it can be used with HP ePrint, however the "Web Services" tab in the EWS that is supposed to be the place to turn on or activate the ePrint option ... is not there on their EWS pages.  Installing the latest firmware does not bring the option in.  I've not located any option to enable it.  From the printer's menu, there is a place under "How to Connect" for the ePrint option but it reports that it isn't enabled.
I just want to be able to enable that functionality.  I've done it on other HP models, but can't find the option on these units.

  • Laserjet 500 color consuming color toner printing black and white text

How can I prevent the consumption of color toner when printing black/white text documents (pdf in Adobe Acrobat)???
I just finished printing about 2200 2-sided pages in Adobe Acrobat pdf files, all black/white text, on my 500dn.  The color toner appears to have been consumed as I am getting signals that my yellow and magenta are below 10%.  They were over 40% when I started the project.

  • HP LaserJet 500 color MFP M570dn ePrint information sheet won't print

When I attempt to Enable Web Services Connect I receive a message that an information sheet will print that contains important information.  That information sheet doesn't print.  After selecting OK, there is another button on the right that says "Print Information Sheet."  Pushing that button also doesn't print an information sheet.  However, I can see that it changes the printer's ePrint email address.
When I go to: https://www.hpconnected.com/us/en/#devices/ to add a new device to my profile, I'm asked for a printer claim code.  When I paste in the part of the printer's newly issue email address before the "@" sign, I receive a message that there is an unexpected error. (HP technical support told me that this part of the email address was the claim code)
This is a new printer (it came yesterday).  How do I fix this?  I spent 1 hour and 45 minutes on the telephone with HP technical support and they were unable to fix it and couldn't really say what to do next.  They said maybe there was some sort of problem with HP's cloud service and that I should keep trying back.  I've tried back a number of times over 24+ hours with the same result.

Thank you for posting this information on our forum boards. At this moment in time, I do not have an answer to your question as to why you can't register your printer with the HP Connected cloud however, I have taken steps to investigate.
Please be patient and hang in there with me. If you can, could you please try and register your printer again in a few days and let me know the results. You may have to disable and enable web services to get a new printer code as the codes are only good for 24 hours.
Please know that I am activately pursuing this issue however it will take time to get to the root cause.
