How to clean drum?

Question

I received a laserwriter select 360 recently and the only problem was a few small dark lines through each page. My first thought- lets clean the drum. Sure enough, I could see some build-up on the drum. Not knowing anything about drums, I grabbed some rubbing alcohol and cleaned the drum, and it actually printed perfectly... yesterday. Today however, the pages are all fairly dark, and sure enough the drum had a light build up on it. Did I destroy the drum? Before I mess with it again, I thought it might be a better idea to ask what to do- duh.

I am afraid that you damaged the drum. If you look up a toner recycler in your area phone book, you might find someone who rebuilds them and they could replace the drum but salvage the toner.
It is worth checking into but those rollers are very sensitive. If left exposed to light, they will do the same thing.

That is a very nice printer so finding a cheap toner rebuild is the key. Otherwise, add the cost of toner plus the cost of a used printer and you will have the real cost of used printers. Some printers are cheap because the toner is expensive. Some toner is cheap because HP and Cannon made PC versions of the printer and those models were so popular that toner still sells well. One such printer is the HP laserjet II. Not an inkjet, it took the most widely used toner out there. Cartridges are still $23.00. However, HP no longer supports those vintage printers.
