I have one of the black synthetic covers for the original iPad. After a year of use it looked pretty bad. A search turned up no good results for cleaning. Since the cover is made of some kind of synthetic material using chemicals or cleaning solutions is probably a bad idea. Here is what worked for me. First, take the iPad out of the cover! Run warm water over the cover and gently scrub it with your bare hand. Dry with paper towells. You will note it still may feel damp. Let it air dry for a while before replacing iPad. I was amazed at how clean it came. Looks like new.

How to Clean Poly Smart Cover?

My new (since last Tuesday) orange smart cover has a few tiny spots on the front where it touches the back of the ipad when it is open. The comes from my putting the ipad down on various counters/tables. It's not bad now, but I can imagine what it'll be like in six months. Anyone found anything to clean the poly material? I've tried damp cloth by itself and with a drop of liquid soap, neither of which leave more spots but they don't remove the ones that are there.

There's a Quilt Soap by Orvus (comes in a liquid or a paste) that I've used to get oils out of fabric BUT it works best with soaking. It has no harmful chemicals and you wouldn't have anything to lose by putting a drop or two in 8 oz of water and dabbing.
Question: When you have the cover open, isn't it the gray inside that's touching the back of the iPad, not the orange outside?
(Speaking just for myself, I just accept spots as part of the process and tell myself it adds character!)

That's funny! "Don’t use window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia, or abrasives to clean iPad." That basically excludes every liquid on the planet, including water!
All I can say is that I've been using a couple of light spritzes of Windex on my iPad when it gets really dirty, and it has not hurt it one bit.

I've tried water, and Iceland. And all it does it make the dirt smudges worse. Should I just buy a new case that isn't a smart cover?

How to use the Smart Cover for FaceTime and Videos?

I bought a new iPad recently with a Smart Cover. I find the Smart Cover very good for typing, at the low angle. The angle is very nice, it feels very comfortable and it allows fast typing. But then what is called the FaceTime/Video angle seems way too steep for me, like 80 degrees. I need to be like 3 meters away, at least, to watch a movie correctly or to be captured by the FaceTime camera. I'm rather tall but still, I don't really get it. I thought for the first couple of days that I was folding the cover in a wrong way but it seems not.
Am I the only one to experience this issue? Or is there another way of folding the cover to get a correct angle? I haven't tried another Smart Cover but I would doubt that mine is faulty. But if it is how the Smart Cover is designed, I'm surprised that Apple went with that, I mean, I can't see the use of this angle, if you need to be so far away from the iPad. I actually bought one (and the Smart Cover) to use it as a support for books/tutorials when I'm coding on my Mac, and I'm finding that I can't find a place for the iPad with the cover on my desk because it ends up to be too steep anywhere I place it...

My experience is the same as yours (and everyone else's, I suppose.)
Other than the various ways you can fold it, Smart Cover is not adjustable.
This link shows what Smart Cover can do.
You have already found the best workaround for Smart Cover: reposition yourself, the iPad, or both so the camera view shows what you want in the picture.
You decide the best location for your iPad while you capture video. Because iPad connects wirelessly, you need not worry about dangling cables.

How to repair the smart cover

The hinge section of my smart cover has separated from the leather portion. Anyone know of an easy home repair? Nothing damaged and just separated...

just tried shoe goo with binder clips to hold it while drying. looks like it'll work and if it doesn't I'll give the super glue a try. (regular electrical or black duct tapes in small pieces won't hold at all)

Leather Smart Cover for iPad Mini?

I hope Apple creates a leather version of the Smart Cover for the iPad MIni.
The polyurethane version - while effective - feels rather cheap and flimsy.
Surely, it would be quite easy for Apple to design a leather version.
Perhaps they are waiting to release it with the Retina version of the iPad mini.

Right now Apple only offers polyurethane smart covers. I really liked the 'look&feel' of the former iPad's leather smart covers. Are there any plans of releasing those for the new air?
