How to clean slot-load drive?

I have a small issues that appears to not be software related. I am not exactly tech-savvy when it comes to apple products, thus I have had a hard time finding a solution.
Basically, I have problems ejecting discs. Firstly, no matter what method of ejecting I attempt, it will not eject fully.
After many attempts, it finally jutts out, but then gets pulled back in again. I have to contiuously eject until finally I can grab the disc and pull it out.
Sometimes running my thumbnail across the "dust flap" helps, sometimes it doesn't. When I look, it appears pretty dusty.
My Macbook Pro IS second hand. So it seems it came to me pretty dusty already.
So after all those pointers, I came to the conclusion that either the dust flap was dirty or sticky, and, maybe, the slot load DVD drive needs cleaning.
If not, can anyone point me to a permanent solution?
Otherwise, can anyone tell me how to safely clean the dust flap and/or slot load drive.

  • 1.46 GB DVD-R in slot load drive??

I was just wondering if anyone knows if these small 1.46GB disks work in the slot loading drive of the new iBook. I have a recording I need played, but I am unable to watch on my computer because I do not want it to get stuck. Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks

Hello I bought an ibook in december so it should be under warranty. But i have placed one of these mini dvds into my ibook g4. Its stuck, not recognised by the computer what can i do to get it out? I'm in Egypt also so I dont know how to contact apple for help with out running up a massive bill? Can you help at all?
Mini DVDs don't work in a slot-loading drive, and you
may damage the drive by inserting one.

  • A500 slot-loading drive doesn't work

I started using my A500 on the 24th of December 2009. Now my slot-loading drive just spits out every disc i put in it.
I've also noticed that most of my toshiba softwares like disc creator loads with these errors when starting: Unexpected error occurred. Error Code: 320129-49-00000015 and Error Code: 32007C-49-00000015
My Recovery Media Creator also starts with this error: Cannot get Disk Driver Information followed by An unexpected error occurred. Please quit this application and restart it.
(Error Code: 0D00F6-49-00000015) and (Error Code: 0D016E-49-00000015)
could they be related? Any help would do.. thanks

Another thought--do you have an external hard drive? If so. I believe you could mount it on your computer and copy the iLife applications onto it. Then you could mount the external drive on the iBook and drag the applications off of it onto the dock. I think that would work--I did that successfully with Garage band once--I moved it to the external hard drive to free up space on my iBook. At a later time, I was able to move it back. If you don't have an external hard drive, it's worth a few $$ to get one so you can use it for backup.
Also, there is a migration Assistant in the utilities folder which is supposed to be used for moving data from one computer to another. I don't know if it works for applications or not--having only one computer, I have never had occasion to use it. But it might work.
    Good luck!

  • Inserting a CD into Slot-Loading Drive

I'm new to Mac. I just bought a latest MacBook a couple days ago. I have a question about slot-loading drive. I'm not really familiar with this drive. Once, I tried to insert a CD. I forced my cd, but the surface didn't let my CD go inside. So, I just tried again, just like swiping my credit card. Then, my CD went inside. Is there any specific instruction to insert a CD into this drive?

    Thanks for your answer.
(Actually, I made a mistake here.
I should not ask this question here because I don't have an original MacBook.)
However, I still feel that it's not that simple.
As you said, I held the CD by edges, and the CD is level with the drive bay. If I try to slide the CD into the drive directly, the CD doesn't really get inside very easily. However, If I push the CD from the right edge of the drive bay and move the CD to the left while pushing it to the drive bay, the CD finally gets in, and the drive will take it. This is why I was about to break my CD.

  • Optical Drive/slot loading drive not recognized by imac G5. HELP US!!!!!

We have an imac G5 that is maybe 14 months old. I know for a fact that the slot loading optical drive on the side has been used for three things in the entire time we've owned it. That's THREE TIMES in 14 months and now it's as if the drive doesn't exist on the computer. I've gone into the system profiler, it says there is no drive, try to put in a cd, no resistance, no noise and it doesn't even try to suck in any disc. Has anyone else experienced this? Have you figured out what to do? I can replace the drive myself, it's not hard but can someone recommend a good quality drive cause I'm not paying through the nose for parts from apple only to have them crap out on me.
    I feel ripped off!

We have 3 right now having problems. 1 just went into the ITech store to have a CD removed. 1 will not even accept a CD anymore and the other just makes awful noises and scratches the CD. These have been minimally used also. They said the Optical Drive is bad on the 1st one. Of course, we are 1 month past our warranty! I think Apple should be backing this but when I called about it they didn't want to help me. Even saying I had not registered them even though I had documentation from them saying I had. I know the feeling of being ripped off. Our company has purchased 20 of these in the last 1 1/2 years. You think we would get a little bit of help from Apple being we have purchased so many of their products in the last 20 years.

  • Got all my photos and LR library onto external HD. How to clean my internal drive?

OK guys here where I sit and need some insight on how to clean up my internal drive.
I have a new MBP and originally imported all my photos from my PC into iPhoto. Then I installed LR3 and it created the library on the internal SSD drive. But I did not move any photos from iPhoto into there yet.
Then I installed an external raid drive just for my photos.
So in watching some of the LightroomLab tutorials, they said to create 2 folders on the fresh external drive. One for Photos and one for the LR library. So I did that and have lightroom now pointing to that index on the external drive.
Coming from a PC I was having a hard time grasping all this import/export stuff so I just found where all my iPhoto pictures were stored on my internal drive and manually copied them over the the external drive Photo directory.......Bad move I found out. No order what so ever. But still did not move them into LR yet.
So today I found another lightroomLab video showing me how to export out of iPhoto to a desktop folder and they exported very nicely organized in dated folders. So I finally imported into LR and moved all the photos from that desktop folder onto my external drive during the import. I am very happy with the organization now in the LR GUI.
So now I ask of you whats the best way to clean everything from my internal drive. Can I just delete the iPhoto library and will that delete all my photos from my internal drive? And what about the initial LR install? Can I just delete the whole LR folder that contains the initial library stuff?
Sorry for all the questions but I am almost there and where I want to be and just want to do the cleanup right so I don't lose anything I am supposed to have.
I really want to be a MAC person and little by little I am understanding more and more.

I dont know anything about iPhoto, but in terms of LR, just delete the photos from your Mac Finder. Then they will show as "missing" in LR. You can then update the location (right click the folder) to one of the versions of the folder that you have on your external.
Maybe you should practice this on a dummy folder or two so that you are comfortable with the process. FYI, LR can only update the location of one folder at a time. Having a parent folder on your internal that is indentical to the parent on the external would be ideal.
If you already have a separate catalog on your external that has all of your photos and edits on it., then just delete the internal files with the finder. Deleting the catalog will only delete the metadata and changes that you made to the images. the photos will remain on your internal drive.
There are a lot of different methods of doing this (like "export folder as catalog"), and different people will have their own favorites.
I'm not sure exactly would your folder heiarchies and catalogs look like, so make sure that it makes sense to you before deleting away.

  • How to clean from print driver hp B209a-M on windows 8

How do I clean my print heads from the print driver hp B209a-M on windows 8

    Hi rcstipe,
    Welcome to the HP forums!
I see you have a Photosmart B209a and are wanting to know how to clean the printhead via the software on Windows 8. I will definitely do my best to assist you with this.
There is full feature software for your printer for Windows 8, so as you would have with the few previous versions of Windows, it's done through the HP Solution Center. If you don't have the HP software installed yet, please download and run the HP Printer Install Wizard to get the software installed.
If you're not sure where to locate the clean printhead function once the software is installed, please have a look at Step four: Clean the printhead under Solution six: Print and evaluate a print quality diagnostic report and troubleshoot defects in this Fixing Ink Streaks, Faded Prints, and Other Common Print Quality Problems document to see where to locate it.
Hope to hear back from you soon!
Please click “Accept as Solution ” if you feel my post resolved your issue, as it will help others find the solution faster

  • How interchangeable are slot loading logic boards

A friend has a 400Mhz slot loader that is working fine and is in the process of getting a 600Mhz snow iMac with a powersupply problem. Is it possible to just swap the logic boards? They are going to have me do the swap so I need to know some stuff going in:
Any voltage issues I should know about? I assume they are similar in shape but does one draw a different amount of power I'd need to deal with?
Do the ports line up with the case in the same way and shape on both logic boards?
And the VRAM is mounted on the logic board too right? So the 16Mb on the 600Mhz iMac travels with it on the logic board, correct?

    Langdon,
Any voltage issues I should know about?
The dangerous voltages are on the board in the top of the case (the brown one, PAV) and you'd have to stick a wet finger or metal probe through holes near the bottom to reach anything dangerous. That would also be with the machine plugged in and turned on.
I assume they are similar in shape
They are identical and the mounting screws and snap tabs are identical
but does one draw a different amount of power I'd need to deal with?
AFAIK they're identical. The power derives from the down converter and you'll move that with the logic board. The down comverter plugs into the logic board. It's the little sub board off to the side that has coils, capacitors and transformer looking thingies on it.
Do the ports line up with the case in the same way and shape on both logic boards?
    They're identical.
And the VRAM is mounted on the logic board too right? So the 16Mb on the 600Mhz iMac travels with it on the logic board, correct?
Right it's hard to tell the difference without close inspection.

  • How to remove a 3inch CD from the slot loading drive??

I have am external adapter for various IDE external devices. The drivers came on a 3 inch CD.I put the CD in the slot it did not appear to go all the in and it will not eject using the normal methods. Anyone run into this situation??
    Bob

I was able to remove the disk quite simply. I slid a business card through the center of the slot. I aimed the card slightly upward toward the top of the drive. I inserted the card in about an inch and a half. I then took a mediun size paper clip and straightened it out. I bent the last millimeter down about one millimeter forming sort of a hook. I then inserted the hook end in about an inch and a half on top of the business card (away from the drive mechanism).I then rotated the paperclip so that the hook end dropped into the hole in the CD. I then slid the paper clip, the the business card and the CD out together It worked great first try. The drive still works.

  • Panther Killed My Slot Load drive?

Updated to Panther last night on my g3 Imac 350. Now the slot drive will not load CDs – including the third install CD. I have the upgraded firmware (4.1.9). Any ideas what went wrong or how to fix it?

    pstar,
I would try using Disk Utility to Repair Permissions (if you have not already). Before and after any update you need to run this. The Disk Utility can be found @ HD/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility/Repair Permissions.
Let us know if that helps,

  • How to 'clean' the hard drive before selling

I just bought a MBP and plan to sell my black MacBook. Is there any way I can be sure all my personal info and settings are set as default. I will transfer my files to the new computer, but what about the settings like network passwords, internet files, etc... Is there an Apple tool to do this? Thanks a lot!

    HI,
If you have purchased items from the iTunes store on the MacBook, make sure and go online with it, launch iTunes and from the Menu Bar, click Store/Deauthorize computer.
    *Erasing disks securely*
Usually when you erase a disk or volume, Disk Utility only erases the information used to access the files on the disk, not the actual files. Because of this, the erased files can be recovered.
If you want to erase the files so that they cannot be recovered, you can select security options to write zeros over the disk space. To make it more difficult to recover the files on the disk, you can specify doing this once, seven times, or 35 times. If you have a large disk, overwriting the free space several times can take a long time.
In Disk Utility, select the disk you want to erase and click Erase.
Specify a volume format and name for the disk.
Click Security Options and select the option you want to use. Click OK.
    Click Erase.
If you select your startup disk, the buttons are dimmed because you can't erase your startup disk. To erase your computer's startup disk, you must start up from another disk. You can use your Mac OS X Install disc or the Software Restore disc that came with your computer.
