How to Clean up my Library

Hi all. I'm kind of an itunes dummy, so any help appreciated.
I have about 3700 songs, all living in the itunes library folder, in hundreds of different subfolders. The other day I upgraded my itunes software, and watched in shock as little "!" started appearing next to song after song. After all was done, itunes had lost its link to about half of my songs, with seemingly no rhyme or reason.
I can use the "Bring out your dead" script successfully, one song at a time, but at this point I'm thinking this will just be a good excuse to delete all the songs I don't ever listen to.
So, is there any way to make a playlist of all the songs I want to keep (I'll manually help itunes find them), then delete everything else: files and all? I do not have an ipod I can sync to.
Thanks all!

  • How to "clean house" in ~/Library

I would like to get rid of as much as possible in my home Library. What is in there that would not be re-created next time an application needs it?

Most of the stuff in ~/Library is likely to be needed, and not the kind of thing that will be re-created. One exception is ~/Library/Caches, the totality of which you can clear whenever you like. You can go through the rest folder by folder and delete items only if you are very, very sure. Only you know how often you use those fancy screensavers, or how many old emails you want to keep (don't mess with the .emix files; use Mail.app "Rebuild" after first making a safety copy of ~/Library/Mail). If in doubt, move items temporarily to the desktop or, say, into ~/Documents and check that all is well, making sure you have re-logged in or re-booted.

  • How to clean Content Viewer Library on iPad

    Please,
I would like to delete some folios (tests) in my content viewer on iPad. But now, it hasn't showed in iTunes.
    Thanks for some tip.
    Regards

A workaround for this is to delete the Adobe Viewer from your iPad. All of its data will be deleted but when you reinstall Adobe Viewer by synching your Apps from your computer, the folios that are currently in your Folio Builder will be sitting there ready for you to download again. The folios that you no longer want and have deleted from your Folio Builder will be gone.

When I launch I photo it wants me to choose a library but it doesn't find one which is impossible, because i still have no storage. before i can clean up i want to back up them. how can i find my library?

You may very well have damaged your library - or even your system by not having adaquate storage available
And never select all of the pitcture and move them - that will destroy your library - the iPhotolibrary is a SQLite database and must always be kept intact as a single entity -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • How do I clean-up iPhoto library in iMovie '08 and make my new ones appear?

I'm a graphic designer and I use Adobe Bridge to add metadata (keywords) to my pictures so they're searchable on the Internet - not just iPhoto (and iLife?) and after transferring all the image files from iPhoto onto my Time Capsule (external hard-drive) and deleting the Photo Albums from iPhoto, I created a new Album to import still frames/images to use in my new iMovie project. I cleaned out (emptied) my iPhoto trash to help free-up space on my hard-drive, too.
The problem I'm having is that my iPhoto library as viewed from iMovie - still shows all the old photo albums that I've already deleted and the new .PNG I imported doesn't appear; however, the old .JPG files I once had still appear with exclamation marks as the thumbnail images and I can't select or delete them. When I right-click on the iPhoto photo albums library within iMovie, I only get the option to open in iPhoto. I imagine there is some back door manipulation required to fix this. The iMovie and iPhoto software came pre-installed in my computer and I'm not so sure that re-formatting my computer with the start-up disc is the safe or correct answer.
I've been researching the iMovie forum to see if there is a file I should be able to access to fix a Cache file somewhere; however, I couldn't find any .xml files, cache files, or anything anywhere yet. Thanks in advance to anyone willing and able to share some knowledge. I look forward to resolving this troubling experience. My final goal is to use the .PNG file (which contains transparent data, unlike .JPG files which fill transparent data with white pixels) as a frame image if not as a floating graphic (i.e. picture-in-picture).

Sean in the iMovie technical support area (thanks to my lovely Apple Care plan purchase) answered my question about how to delete the iPhoto library, which I no longer use (because I use Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS3 to browse my photos and update their Metadata to make the images searchable not only on my computer, but others who don't have iPhoto, or iLife as well; even PC users and Internet search engines - when the images are uploaded as-is - without compression and changes that occur when uploaded to image hosts such as Photobucket.com, etc.):
Go to: *Finder >* (click on) *Pictures >* (and on the right, see iPhoto Library, Aperture, etc.? Select those files and...) *Move to Trash*
Now when you look at the Photos Browser in iMovie (⌘2) the folder, files, blank thumbnails and junk are (thankfully) gone!
As for using images located elsewhere for use in iMovie - I just have to locate them via the Finder, then select the file, then drag-and-drop the image for immediate placement into the part of My Project where I want to use the image and repeat this method for each incidence I want the graphic to appear.
Unfortunately, I must upgrade to iMovie '09 if I want to be able to take advantage of the Picture-in-Picture feature, which would enable me to place a logo or image graphic in a video project while other parts of the production are playing, but I can still use the title feature to embed text information such as a business name and phone number or (website) URL pertaining to the project as a surrogate stamp, watermark, or creative signature, but no other graphic image files may be used here.

  • Got all my photos and LR library onto external HD. How to clean my internal drive?

OK guys here where I sit and need some insight on how to clean up my internal drive.
I have a new MBP and originally imported all my photos from my PC into iPhoto. Then I installed LR3 and it created the library on the internal SSD drive. But I did not move any photos from iPhoto into there yet.
Then I installed an external raid drive just for my photos.
So in watching some of the LightroomLab tutorials, they said to create 2 folders on the fresh external drive. One for Photos and one for the LR library. So I did that and have lightroom now pointing to that index on the external drive.
Coming from a PC I was having a hard time grasping all this import/export stuff so I just found where all my iPhoto pictures were stored on my internal drive and manually copied them over the the external drive Photo directory.......Bad move I found out. No order what so ever. But still did not move them into LR yet.
So today I found another lightroomLab video showing me how to export out of iPhoto to a desktop folder and they exported very nicely organized in dated folders. So I finally imported into LR and moved all the photos from that desktop folder onto my external drive during the import. I am very happy with the organization now in the LR GUI.
So now I ask of you whats the best way to clean everything from my internal drive. Can I just delete the iPhoto library and will that delete all my photos from my internal drive? And what about the initial LR install? Can I just delete the whole LR folder that contains the initial library stuff?
Sorry for all the questions but I am almost there and where I want to be and just want to do the cleanup right so I don't lose anything I am supposed to have.
I really want to be a MAC person and little by little I am understanding more and more.

I dont know anything about iPhoto, but in terms of LR, just delete the photos from your Mac Finder. Then they will show as "missing" in LR. You can then update the location (right click the folder) to one of the versions of the folder that you have on your external.
Maybe you should practice this on a dummy folder or two so that you are comfortable with the process. FYI, LR can only update the location of one folder at a time. Having a parent folder on your internal that is indentical to the parent on the external would be ideal.
If you already have a separate catalog on your external that has all of your photos and edits on it., then just delete the internal files with the finder. Deleting the catalog will only delete the metadata and changes that you made to the images. the photos will remain on your internal drive.
There are a lot of different methods of doing this (like "export folder as catalog"), and different people will have their own favorites.
I'm not sure exactly would your folder heiarchies and catalogs look like, so make sure that it makes sense to you before deleting away.

  • Serious about cleaning up my library, and i have this question on odd duplicate problem

Hi all, I am serious about cleaning up my library, and i have this question:
Is there such thing as a duplicate anymore in iTunes, and what happened to the View / Find duplicates feature? I could have sworn there was a built-in way... Anyway, In my media subdirectories, I have a hundreds of music album folders that have songtitlethesame 1.mp3, songtitlethesame 2,  songtitlethesame 3, etc. where they are the same song (same timecode) but with different catalogue info, ie. album art, date added/modified, etc. What can I do about this?
I was surprised to find songGenieII and Powertunes does not have a "duplicate" remover... and it seems for the bucks spent, there should be
    Cheers!

Duplicates are a mess and personally I do not feel any automated process can handle them correctly - there's too many different kinds of  "duplicates" and often the only way to tell they are the same (or not) is to listen to them.
I use an old iTunes so I cannot tell you where they have moved the show duplicates things but I can pretty much guarantee they would not have removed it.  Poke around a bit.

  • Utility to clean iTunes music library?

    Hello,
I recently lost a massive amount of music from my iTunes library. The songs are still listed in my 'Music - Library' but they are no longer on my hard drive. They were deleted from the hard drive by an unknown software application.
Is there an Apple - iTunes application that will produce a report of all the music files that do not have a corresponding source file? I can make a list mannualy by trying to play one song from each CD but this will take me a week.
Then when I am done - how do I clean up my library?

Thank you for the quick way to identify the problem tracks. After I make a list of all the artist's and tracks that are missing I will need to delete the invalid entries.
Do you know how I can select them for deletion?
    Thank you!

  • How to Cleanup System and Library Folders?

Any body knows how to clean up this 2 folders? my ROOT System folder is 2.38GB, ROOT Library folder is 10.43GB and USER library is 6.35GB. I think they contains a lot of unwanted files and folders. any software i can use or methods?
    thanks.

I'm rather surprised by the size of your System folder--it's about twice the size of mine. The /Library folder sounds about right, if you installed iLife06, including all the sound files for GarageBand and the various Themes for iDVD. Your home Library folder also sounds rather large. The easiest way to find out what is going on is to put a folder into List view. Then go to View->Show View Options and make sure there is a check mark in the button for Size, and also that Calculate all sizes is checked at the bottom. Now click on the Size column header in the open Finder window for the folder. You'll see what's using all the space. For instance, in my home ~/Library folder the biggest item is the Caches folder, at 840MBs. If I click the disclosure triangle of the Caches folder I see that the QuickTime sub-folder has 400MBs of junk. GoogleEarth has 275MBs, but I would rather not have to re-download anything from there, as it isn't the speediest server in the world, so I won't toss it.
If you never use GarageBand it would be fine to toss its files out of your /Library folder. There isn't really a program that can do all this for you. Only you can determine what things you need/want and what you don't. And I would be VERY cautious about anything in the /System folder. If you have added custom screensavers, as I have done, of course you could toss them, but not much else--although I'm really curious about the source of the extra GB you have that I don't.
The best candidates for removal are the large folders in Application Support and the Audio folder with files for applications you do not use, plus the Printer folder with stuff for printers you do not have and don't plan to buy.
You should also get yourself a backup drive and clone your startup drive to it, make sure you can boot from the clone, and then do your housekeeping chores. That way if you want anything back, you can get it. Not to mention being able to boot the computer just in case you accidently toss something you shouldn't...

  • How do I remove itunes library from remote app

This question really could be in several forums due to includeing Apple TV, Apple Remote App, iPad, iTunes and so on, but I think this is the best site, sorry if wrong!
Here's the problem: I am using Apple's Remote App on my iPad to control the Apple TV.  Works great!
But, I mistakenly also added my computer's iTunes Library (via a 4 digit pin, not Home Sharing) to the devices the Remote App can manage.
How do I remove the Library from the Remote devices??

Yup, I finally stumbled across an edit button that let me delete the iTunes library.  Thanks!
BTW: I think Apple has to clean up some of their evolutionary kruft.  AirPlay vs Home Sharing.  ATV direct use of Library. iCloud and iTunes match. It takes a lot of thought figuring out how to use Apple's media ecology.  I realize its all historic but I bet there are a LOT of confused folks out there.
Just for the record: I decided to use Match .. only $25 or so a year and my phone, pod, pad, tv etc all have access to my complete digital collection.  I also love AirPlay.  I've started avoiding Home Shairing like the plague!  As far as I can tell, it mainly is still around due to the Media Industry placing restrictions on Apple.
    Thanks again.

I found this article some time ago when I was trying to help someone else in this same situation. This is a copy and paste from the website. The website is provided below for you to read before you try this.
    Plug your phone into iTunes
Click setup as a new device
Immediately unplug your phone from the computer
Give it about 30 seconds and iTunes will give a message (I don’t remember the specific, but regarding you unplugging the device and it not completing)
    Plug your phone back in
Viola! no restore occurred and you can access everything again
This computer has previously synced with an iPhone or another iOS device.

Until recently I have owed 2 iPod Classics - 2007 80gb and 2009 160gb (which has since been returned as it had a very noisy hard drive).
How do I transfer the library from the 160gb  to the 80gb in iTunes using Windows Vista.
Nothing seems to help on the Apple support pages, so any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply, but not actually sure how to sync a second iPod with the library of the first, as I thought it would not recognise a new iPod for copyright reasons.
Also, the files are in a location on the pc but I had to do lots of formatting amendments in iTunes as most of the stuff was on mp3 files and the formatting was all over the place. I did not want to loose any of the work by simply asking the new iPod to look at the original file and would rather copy en masse from one device to another.
Any help or pointers greatly appreciated
    Thanks
