How to clear folders added to Desktop & Screensaver?

Last March, BDAqua wrote that I trash the following preference files in my User/Library to clear the folders I've added to System Preferences' Desktop & Screensaver:
1. /Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
2. /Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.(12 digit hex number).plist
3. /Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.slideshow.(12 digit hex number).plist
I've tried that a few times and the folders remain there. Can a Terminal command get rid of them?

I thought the benefits would go to all Macs with more than one core. If that's the case, I'm sticking with Tiger until I have to get a new computer, which could be a while. Thanks for straightening me out on that. Now I'm even more disappointed how quickly the Core Duos were replaced with Core 2 Duos. I should have waited a few more months before buying this computer.

  • Folders added to "Desktop Pictures" not visible in System Prefs...

    Hello,
I am trying to add additional wallpaper images to the "/Library/Desktop Pictures" directory. I can add images to this dir and they are visible in the Desktop & Screen Saver preferences, however newly added folders are not (I would like to add folders so I can keep the pictures organized).
How do I get Desktop & Screen Saver prefs to see new folders?
    -Steve

    Hi Mike,
Thanks very much! That did the trick!
Just so you know, there is one additional file I edited to make the folders appear with the desired name. Basically if you just add the text to Collections.plist it will display the folder but with the name on the identifier tag. If you want the folder to show a name other than the identifier you have to edit the Collections.strings file in the English.lproj directory.
Here are the instructions I've put together for this whole procedure:
    --------------------INSTRUCTIONS------------------------
    - cd /System/Library/PreferencePanes/DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane/Contents/Resou rces/DesktopPictures.prefPane/Contents/Resources
    - sudo vi Collections.plist
    - add additional items in the following form:
    identifier = myPatterns;
    path = "/Library/Desktop Pictures/My Patterns";
    showScalingPopUp = YES;
    - save file and exit
    THEN
    - cd English.lproj
    - sudo vi Collections.strings
add line entries in the following format:
    myPatterns = "My Patterns";
(the tag on the left of the '=' sign must match the identifier noted above)
    save file and exit
    --------------------INSTRUCTIONS------------------------
The only thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to get the scaling drop-down box to appear; you know, the drop-down box that gives you the following choices on how to display the image: Fill screen, Stretch to fill screen, Center, Tile.
I see in the Collections.plist file there is a tag for showScalingPopUp and I've set this to YES on some folders, but it doesn't bring up the drop-down box when I select an image within that folder.
I can certainly live without this b/c it's not that critical, but still it's curious...

  • Desktop Wallpaper folders added disappear

I've had this issue since I had my HDD changed at Genius Bar and they installed Mountain Lion. Whenever I add more than one folder with wallpapers to System Preferences>Desktop & Screensaver and later close and re-open System Preferences, all folders, except for the last one I added, have disappeared. It's a really annoying bug and I haven't got an answer on how to fix it yet, I have several folders with wallpapers and when I had Lion I never had any problem adding them to system preferences to switch wallpapers from there. Does anyone have any clue on how to solve this issue? I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (latest update which didn't solve the issue either).
I have read here in the forum of other people also having the same issue, I would really appreciate any help from someone who has find a way to solve it other than reinstalling Mountain Lion.
Thank you in advance for your help.

I purchased a Macbook Pro (2012, non-retina) and I have the same issue.
I went to the Genius Bar, and we went through the same steps I took before (deleting plist files, repairing permissions). The issue is system-wide; My admi account, Guests, new Users all experience it.
We could not solve the issue. The Genius' best answer was that this generation might have a bug in its particular build of 10.7.4. I ultimately had a choice of waiting for Apple to discover the bug, or live with it.
I'm about to attempt a reinstall of Lion. I doubt it will help with anything, since I can't download a fresh copy from the App Store (apparently having 10.7.4 preinstalled means I can never have access to a fresh copy).
I'm concerned, as I have no idea if this sort of issue is contained only to this preference, or if it can end up screwing with me later on, say in the middle of an iPad app I'm developing.
The only work-around I can suggest: Don't close System Preferences for the entire time the Mac is on. If you log out or reboot, you'll have to set up your folders again, but if you never close System Preferences, they will remain.

  • Desktop appearance problem:  For no apparent reason my Mac running OSX 10.4.11 imposed a mesh-like pattern over the folders on my desktop and also across the top of the screen and down the right-hand side where I have the dock.  How do I remove it?

For no apparent reason my Mac (2 GHz PowerPC G5) running 10.4.11 has put a mesh-like pattern over the folders on my desktop and also a band of the same pattern across the top of the screen and down the right-hand side over the dock.  (See screen grabs below.)
It doesn't affect any operations but makes folder names and drop-down menus difficult to read through the pattern.
I'm not aware of changing any settings so suspect I must have clicked on something without noticing.  How do I get rid of the overlaid pattern, please?

Information about my computer is as follows:

  • Desktop & Screensaver won't store my changes

My Desktop & Screensaver preference pane (Lion 10.7.4) is not storing changes to the "Folders" section.  Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?
I added folders under "Folders" and later deleted the folders from my hard drive.  The Desktop & Screensaver preference pane turned these folders into "ghost" folders.
So now I have several ghost folders under "Folders" in the Desktop tab of my Desktop & Screensaver preference pane.  I can highlight each ghost folder and click the "-" button to delete it, but when I relaunch Desktop & Screensaver they return.  Also, I can add new folders to the "Folders" section, but when I relaunch Desktop & Screensaver, they aren't there anymore.
    Can anyone help?

Try booting on safe boot then try the folders or check settings then reboot again to normal.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
To reboot as normal just restart the Mac.
    Second option
Try to delete Saved application state of your finder.
    1. Finder Menu>GO (then hold Alt/option to reveal Library) Click on Library
    2. Look for the Saved Application State Folder and delete com.apple.findersavedState. Reboot the machine so that it will create a new fresh findersavedstate file
Might set your finder to default again though. Hope it it helps.

  • Using iPhoto with Desktop/Screensaver

It must be something simple, but I've Googled and searched the forum and can't figure it out. I see that apparently this newer version of iPhoto prevents easy access to the folders that contain the actual images. But how you do get the Desktop/Screensaver in Prefs to allow you to select from photos in your iPhoto library? At one point I thought it was importing them, but it spun and spun for a long time, so I canceled. I did access the Originals folder through Finder, created a folder and dragged a few photos to it. I was able to access that folder to select a Desktop pic, but isn't that just making copies and eating up drive space?
    Any advice?

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Desktop/Screensaver Preferences

    Hi there,
I recently installed Snow Leopard on a first gen Core Solo Mini with 2 gigs of RAM, and migrated a whole account data from another computer running Lion. When I go to Desktop/Screensaver preferences, I cannot get to the desktop preferences at all, and no screensavers appear on the left box. I tried copying the Screensavers folder from another HDD (an older SL install that works as it should), restarted, but no dice.
Does anybody have any idea of what's going on?
    TIA

You can't do this, Apple changed things in Lion especially in the hidden Users/Library, can't use Lion OS X files in Snow Leopard
You will need to manually copy your data out of the migrated from Lion user account folders that contain anything Music, Pictures, Movies etc., (except Library) off the machine to a regular storage drive.
Then your going to need to create another Admin user (if you don't have one already) log into it and delete the migrated from Lion user account, reboot, then recreate the same named user account, this will give you a 10.6 version of the Users/Library again, no Lion taint.
Then log into it and return files, but not the iPhoto Library or the iTunes folder, you will need to first get the orignal pictures and music out and reimport them into the 10.6 versions of these programs.
To get the orignal photo's out of the 10.7 iPhoto Library, right or control click on the 10.7 iPhoto Library and "show package contents" inside is a Originals folder, move that out and open 10.6 iPhoto and import that folder of pictures, they will go into the 10.6 iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder automatically.
In the 10.7 iTunes folder there is another inside folder that just contains your music etc. copy that out and import into 10.6 version of iTunes, you music will then be imported into the 10.6 version of the iTunes Music folder, your 10.7 playlists will be gone unfortunatly.
That's all I can help you with there, but the same tactic must be played for any other software that was tainted by Lion verisions.
What your doing basically is "reverting to Snow Leopard" Apple doesn't expect people to do this when they employed the migration assistant/ TimeMachine system, it's all forward and no reverse.
Create a new TM drive on the 10.6 system
Read this here, it's basically what your doing, reverting from 10.7 to 10.6, but your using another machine with 10.6 installed already.

That is hard to say, as we do not know what you keep on your hard drive.
    To free space
empty the trash, both on your Desktop and the Aperture Trash,
Delete files and folders you do not need
Move files to an external volume.
There are utilities that let you find large files, like Omni Disk Sweeper, but that is not a free application.

  • How to clear parameters defined in selection screen on back button

    Hi,

IMO, he only wants to clear the selection screen parameters on the click of 'BACK' button
in the list screen. If the OP clears the selection screen variables in AT SELECTION-SCREEN OUTPUT
even, the values assinged to the selection parameters in the INITIALIZATION and with the DEFAULT addition of the PARAMETERS and SELECTION-OPTIONS statements will also be overwritten even when the report is executed for the
    first time.

  • How to clear tab settings in Designer in 7.0

I imported an existing form and added text fields/drop downs, etc. I used copy/paste throughout. When I went to set tab order there are in some cases 3 or 4 numbers beside a single field and even straight text fields are numbered. I can't figure out how to clear all of these out so that I can properly set the tab order. When I did advanced>accessibility>full check in the form in acrobat it said that "WARNING: Since the PDF file contains Adobe XML form fields, you must use Adobe Designer to repair errors" and "All of the pages in this document have tab order that may be inconsistent with the structure order".
I am brand-new to using this software so as detailed an explanation as possible would be greatly appreciated.

Simple how-to guide to adding windows 7 64-bit to mavericks as a virtual machine (Virtual Box)
Why use a Virtual Machine: Sometimes you need to run a windows only program.  A VM lets you do that without rebooting your machine.
How is it different from Mac Boot Camp: Boot camp allows you to run windows but you must reboot your machine. It is faster and smoother than a VM (and with fullscreen details below), but you have to reboot for each use.
Is it possible to have a VM and Boot Camp: Yes, and I do this because sometimes I want to use a VM quickly without shutting down, sometimes I want the advantages of Boot Camp

    Type: Microsoft Windows

Proceed to setup Win with your preferences
Type product key from your OS purchase or an existing one that you are moving from another machine
Note: Screen resolution may be very limited on the virtual machine.  I use resolution 800 X 600 so that all of the desktop is visible.
I suggest using a windows gadget to view the CPU and Memory usage > On desktop mac-right-click i.e. separate fingers and click both > Gadgets > CPU Meter
Enjoy having Windows on your Mac!

I have found a solution to the screen being smaller in the windows 7 virtual machine.  First right-click in the desktop region and select screen resolution.  It is probably set to 800 X 600 by default which is much less than the screensize you are using.  To determine your native screensize, go to your mac and finder > applications > utilities > hardware > graphics displays.  Mine is 1440 X 900 for macbook air.  Then go back into the virtual machine and sceen resolution settings.  Choose a screen resolution which is slightly less in all dimensions so that there is no clipping and you do not have to scroll when viewing.  For me this was 1152 X 864.  Then exit saving changes and with the VM in view press command - F (or at the menu bar View > Switch to full screen), which puts you in full screen mode.  Now you should have a screen with minimal gray empty space filling the majority of your screen

    Quit Safari.
Click out on your desktop somewhere to get Finder menu on the top menu bar.  Then look over to the right, and select the "Go" menu while holding down the "Option"button.  You will then see an option for "Library" right under your home folder on that list.
That is your hidden Users Library.  Open that Library, go down to Caches.  Open that, and then look for apple.com.Safari.  Take that file to the trash.
    Restart Safari.
I tried it, I do not know what the consequences are yet

It''s a bit drastic, but that clears Safari cache. There's another way of clearing the cache:
    1. Open Safari, go to Safari menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > Advanced, and tick "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
    2. Close Preferences, and go to Develop menu > Delete cache
