How to clear "other" storage space

How do you clear storage space taken up by "other"?

To do that you will need to restore your phone:
If You Are Locked Out, Have Forgotten Your Passcode, or Just Need to Restore Your Device
1. iTunes 10 for Mac- Update and restore software on iPod, iPhone, or iPad
2. iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
3. iOS- Understanding passcodes
4. What to Do If You've Forgotten Your iPhone's Passcode
5. How to Recover Forgotten iPhone Restrictions Passcode | The iPhone and iPad
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
     1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
     2. Connect your device to your computer.
     3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
     4. Select the Summary tab.
     5. Select the Restore option.
     6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the
Back Up option. If you have just backed up the device, it is not necessary
          to create another.
     7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
     8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
         logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
          you see "iPhone is activated."
     9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. If you do not have a
backup to restore or have forgotten your restrictions passcode, then restore as New.
If you are restoring to fix a forgotten Restrictions Code or as a New device, then skip Step 9 and restore as New.

  • Other storage space

After syncing and installing ios, I lost all my music and my other storage space is over 9gb. How do I get rid of this?

You need to restore your iPhone from a backup to clear the "other" data. If that does not work you must restore it as new.

  • My 'other' storage space is high and I've tried everything suggested on here, what else can I do?

I recently got an I pad mini with ios7, I only store little music and apps however my 'other' storage space is nearly 7GB. I have tried everything I could find that was suggested to sort the problem out but nothing has seemed to work. Any advice?

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

All the sudden this morning I have 5.5gb of "other" storage space used. Is there any resolution to this? I'm going on a trip to Orlando, FL and not near my iTunes syncing pc.

I cannot delete your posts. As I explained, only the Hosts can.
And if you can find it in your heart to actually pass on the feedback that the pre installed apps not being able to easily be gotten rid of is a problem, then that would be great.
Use the feedback link I gave in my first post.
Apparently one of your hosts deleted his own post where he called me an idiot for necroing this thread, where it's still an issue. Obviously I'm not so naive as to think it'd be changed on one person's say-so, but the fact that he deleted his own post is problematic and goes to trust and accountability.

  • How to clean "other" storage?

So my mac has like 170 gigs occupying "other" storage. How can i get rid of this? My drive's full and I don't what I should do. Any tips?

The 'other' category in are all the files that do fit in the categories already displayed here. They will include the OS X operating system files and documents, spreadsheets, pdfs etc., emails, messages, notes etc. All files that you have stored on your computer.
There is no easy way to simply delete files in this category as they could be a vast variety of files and types, some of which you will need, such as OS X files.
This is one of those areas that you must manually delete files that you no longer want on your computer, similar to cleaning out your old physical filing cabinet when it gets full.

  • Clearing "Other" storage on Macintosh HD

My storage shows over 130 GB of "Other".  What is it and how do I clear it out?  I have almost as much "Other" as I do regular files.  I've emptied my trash, that has been the only thing that has effected the total amount of "Other".

  • How to clear "other" section

I have deleted the Backups.backupdb folder, and the Backups section is now empty, however, the "other" section has increased, I would like to know how can I delete the other section files related to the backups.

I would suggest that the Time Machine back-ups be done with an external hard drive. After the back-up is done to the external hard drive, turn off Time Machine. After you power up your lap top again, the back-ups under the disk utility storage window should show zero KB.
What I have found that the "other" files were, for me anyways, was from my iTunes. I moved my iTunes to an external hard drive because it was over 300 GB and my hard drive is only 500 GB. From what I can gather is this. When you de-select something in iTunes for your iPhone, iPod, or iPad, what was deselected gets "deleted" from the device and goes into the "other" catagory. I am guessing as you are not actually deleting it from iTunes, just a device. Deleting a copy. I only happened to notice this because I have a 3rd party wiping program called BCWipe. And after I had un-selected a couple movies on my iPad and synced, I did a wipe of my trash. In my wipe program window I happened to see a lot of iTunes files with the .trashes extension. So after it was completed I went back to the storage window and you can see below that it cleared it all up. The trash icon in the dock was showing to be empty, even before I wiped the trash.
I have seen a lot of posts state that there are Pages/Numbers/PDF files that are also stored under the "other" section but I don't think that is true because I have nothing in the stored as other (see below) and just over 27 GB in the Apps. So I believe that these documents are kept within their appropriate application.
I just want to add that this was using MacBook Pro with Mavericks.

  • Clearing up storage space

    Hi-
I have been working on a large film project on my new MacBook (OS 10.5.1) that has put a lot of temporary information in my storage. Now it is so full I cannot continue burning the project until I clear it up. Can someone walk me through so that I can get to the temporary file where I can find previous film that I have burned and is now clogging up my system? I used iMovie and iDVD to create the previous project. Thanks!

    Hello there rsylviana,
It sounds like you are unable to use your phone because settings keeps indicating that you have 0 space available on it. If settings is misreporting the space, I would start by quitting all the running apps on the device:
iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If that does not resolve the issue I would use the steps in the following article for further assist you:
iOS: "Not enough free space" alert when trying to sync
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • How to make more storage space to upgrade iPhone 4

Can’t upgrade to IOS 8.0.2 b/c phone says, “This upgrade cannot be installed because it requires at least 4.7 GB of storage. You can make more storage available by deleting items in Usage Settings.” Phone says I only have 1.4 GB available. I’ve only got 1) 2.7 GB of music, 2) 161 MB of photos, and total of 2 GB of other apps. Everything else are Apple apps, such as contacts, safari, mail, etc. I cleaned out most photos.
I’ve made a point of downloading very few apps and keeping all photos on my iMac, but the phone has filled up in only a few months. Seems only way to make any real space available is to have no music, no photos, and no apps. Only that will create 4.8 GB of available space. Is it just a phone then? Is there any other practical option?

You can look in Settings > General > Usage > Storage > Manage Storage. That list will tell you what is taking up the most amount of space. Obvious culprits are photos and video. But games and magazine subscriptions are also very large.
What you delete first depends on what you use your iPhone for. What is your priority? In any case, that list will at least help you see what takes up the most space and decide what should go first.

  • How to clear hard drive space?

my hard drive is "full" i need a way to clear space or compress files, without taking them off of my computer, Ive already put all my photos and movies on an external hard drive all thats left is 25 gigs of music and applications really. hard drive is 80g. I cant have my external hard drive all the time and i need space on the laptop in general, thanks for any help

i said right there, that i didnt want to move any more stuff off of the computer, ill dump trash or compress files, but i need to make room.
Not being a smartass, but somtimes it doesn't matter what you want.
If you can't clear enough space you may have to move more files off, or buy a larger internal drive.

This is not tested on Tiger, but there may be an equivilent.
