how do you make room on your start up disk. i am trying to do the update but don't have enough space
Try this:
1. Open "Finder", then navigate to "Movies" on the left side. Click on "iMovie Projects"
2. Move desired movies and clips to trash, or your flash drive.
*PS* Its dangerous to have a full hard drive, I would recommend either trashing, or transferring files to another computer. Trash applications you no longer use as well. -

You can get there from here (booting normally); it just may take you a few steps to do it.
If the disk is almost full and the system won't boot then sometimes it will boot in Safe Mode.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564?viewlocale=en_US
Empty the trash after it boots.
Then for hints on how to free disk/SSD storage see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5872318?tstart=0
If the Safe Mode boot does not do the trick then you can install OS X on an external hard disk, boot from that, and then delete files. You can also reach the disk via Target Mode. A third option is to take it to an Apple store where they can do a network boot and help you remove some files. -
I have an MacBook Pro 10.6, using disk utility I tried to verify my disk, but it came up with the message, please use your start up disk, I tried this, starting the computer up and pressing C, but it ejected the disk, the same thing happened while I running the computer. Is the hard drive damaged as laptop doesn't seem to recognize the start up disk ? If so, I presume I will have to put in a new one.
There haven't been any problems with the computer, apart from a sticky curser,I have run a permissions programme from disk utility, there were a lot of different ones, but it seem to be able to fix them.
Any comments or ideas ?
Thank you in anticipation.First backup your users files off the machine to a external storage drive (not TimeMachine!)
Most commonly used backup methods
Next to startup from the disk, have it inserted, hold c or option/alt (wired or built in keyboard) and then boot the computer and or select the disk when it appears and click the arrow.
Disk Utility is under the Utilities menu on the second screen.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If you used the wrong 10.6 disk, it will spit it out or have issues, use the one that came with that machine or if it's defective, call Apple for a new one. -
i cant update my software as it always prompted me ,your start up disk is full and not enough space, when i had done the deleting some of my documents and stuff that i dont need it.
I use CCleaner from the AppStore to delete the 'useless' stuff. It's free and works great for me

How to make free space on your start up disk
Hey!
I'm experiencing some problems with my MacBook Pro. Everytime I'm trying to save something or downloading something, it say my start up disk is almost full. And sometimes it tells me I have to quit applications to make space.
How can I make free space, I mean, I can't have used all the memory on my computer already, I've only had it for a year. I'm guessing I've got a file that's taking up a lot of space. How can I identify it? And how can I make free space on my start up disk?
Thanks for the help,
leozinho2rDownload and use either WhatSize or Omni Disk Sweeper to see what files are filling your drive. Trash them if you don't need them.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew how to remove files from the start up disk without deleting any files?
I am unable to add any more photos and even download the latest updates because the start up disk is full....
Is it possible to move the files off the start up disk without deleting them?
I would appreciate feedback,
Thanks
SammyWell you can move them to an external drive but this will delete them from the internal drive. Which is what you have to do to free up disk space.

How do I rectify start up disk almost full. I am new to Macs and struggling
How do I rectify a start up disk almost full message? Never had this until I put a load of photos on to my Mac book air
Hello Kirkcaldy Ronnie,
As Plotinus Veritas said take a backup for your Images on External Hard Disk.
As your Macbook Air Startup disk is full and if you are unable to do anything on your Mac follow the below process to boot your Mac in Safe Mode and then delete some files on your Mac to free up some disk space and then you should be able to boot in Normal Mode.
Steps : > Turn of your Macbook completely by holding the Power On/Off key on your Mac's keyboard > Turn On your Mac again and simultaneously press and hold the Left Shift key on your keyboard and this should take your Macbook in Safe Mode. ( Note : You will see a loading bar at startup when you boot your Mac in safe mode and your Mac will take some time to boot) > Once you login to the User Account on your Mac go ahead an delete as many files as you can from your Mac to free up some space (try to delete and make as much space as you can and keep at least 20% space free of the total amount of your disk space on your Mac Disk) and also empty the Trash of your Mac to completely remove the files from your Mac. > Now you can restart your Mac and let it start in Normal mode and check of you are able to login. If you are able to login in normal mode then try to transfer the data which you do not use regularly on an external hard disk and keep internal space free as much as you can as that will help you to get a better performance of your Mac. Hope this helps you. -
can you tell me how to make space on my mac air
Start by adding an extenal hard drive where you can store bulk material...there are a lot of good ones at OWC, http://www.macsales.com
Move your photos, music and videos to libraries you create for things like iTunes and iPhoto to use on the external drive. Then clear out that space on the internal storage. Be cautious about what you delete from the internal storage, stay far away from all of the Mac OS X system folders. -

I am still having trouble with my iMac since I last spoke with you guys about 2 weeks ago. Sorry to take so long to get back to you (things were a little wonky around here). Anyway, I did try running in Safe Mode, as Bob suggested but I continued to have the same problems. Strangely, the original message did not reappear, and has not popped up since the first time I wrote about it. However, the computer is still showing all the same problems. It is running slow, stalling in the middle of games, Youtube etc. I'm getting really sick of seeing that spinning color wheel every time I turn it on. Any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated & thank you all for all the tips and advice with my first posting.
