How to Clone Primary Drive prior to, or after, adding a second drive in Ultrabay

Alright, I have a T510 with a single internal drive. I wish to add a SSD drive and make it my primary drive. I have an Ultrabay and know about the drive adapter for it and plan to use it as the new drive location.
My question is how to perform the cloning of the primary drive. I can install the new SSD in the Ultrabay and use software, previously copied to the primary(or backup) drive since the Ultrabay is now used for the SSD so I can't run a CD. The issue is how to clone. I don't wish to buy another external drive just for the cloning software CD.
I have an external hard drive that I use for backups. Has anyone cloned a copy of a drive(A) to another drive(B) and then copied it to a new drive(C)? If this is a good idea, it is easy since the CD drive is still available using this method.
The end result would be to swap locations of the drives making the SSD the new primary internal drive and the old drive goes to the Ultrabay.
Just looking for input.
Thanks for taking the time,
Pete

  • How to Clone Hard Drive from Macbook Pro to Macbook Pro with Retina

Hey everyone! I had a question about cloning my laptop's hard drive. I was considering buying a MBP with Retina, but was wondering how I would accomplish copying over my current hard drive to the retina, as I know you can't take out the retina's hard drive, and it is flash. Any suggestions?

Connect the two with a Firewire cable if they both have Firewire ports (or use Thunderbolt if the both have Thunderbolt ports.) Boot the new computer into Target Disk Mode and the old computer normally. The new computer's disk drive should appear on the Desktop of the old computer.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination
          entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new computer's drive Source means the old computer's drive.
Be sure the old computer is running a version of Mountain Lion that is later than the version installed on the new computer. After cloning you will probably need to run the new 10.8.2 updater for the new computer. OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 Update for 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display, 21.5" iMac (Late 2012), Mac mini (Late 2012).

  • How to clone external drive to time capsule drive

My previous set up was TM running on the TC drive with a USB drive that has my iTunes library. Because my TC ran out of space for two computers doing backup I had to buy a larger USB drive and swap their purposes. So I got the TM backups archived to the new USB pretty easily. But I am at a loss for how to transfer the old USB with my iTunes library to the TC disk. It doesn't show up in Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner as an available drive. I'm worried that it won't accurately transfer the data if I just do a drag and drop in Finder, screwing up my library. So:
    1) Is there a way to clone a USB drive to the TC drive?
    2) If not, will I be facing a huge iTunes mess if I just copy the files using Finder?

Just drag and drop the iTunes library from the USB drive to the Time Capsule.

  • How to change security questions after adding a second email address?

I'm at a loss and really really frustrated with Apple for the first time in my life.
I've added a second email address and tried over the last 3 days on my iPad and Mac to change my security questions. There is no option present that I can see that allows you to do this without first entering the answers. (to which I don't know anymore)
I called Apple support (even in english) and every time the call has been dropped.
In all the years since switching to Apple I've always been impressed with the level of customer service. This is the first time that I've felt this level of sincere frustration.
I'm not sure why I have to book a time to speak with someone. Updating or changing security questions, should be a process one can do over the internet. I'm confused either way why questions are necessary if the apple password entered was correct. It's not my bank account; why the need for such extreme security just to download an app paid for by an iTunes card!
Any help or direction would be appreciated!!
    Thank you

    Hello there, Kate.
Apologies for your frustration. For your security the existing questions need to be answered before new ones can be created. The following Knowledge Base article provides some additional steps to try if you are unsure of the answers to the existing ones:

Try answering them at least once to see if you can get them right, even if you are not sure you remember the answers to your security questions.
If you are confident you can't remember them, try one of the following:
If you have three security questions and a rescue email address

  • Would Like To Clone Hard Drive On X40

    Hello folks.
I have an X40 with about 15GB allocated to the C and perhaps 5 GB allocated to the recovery partition (these are estimates), WXP Pro SP3.  The machine is constantly running out of space.
So I found a replacement 40GB hard drive in Hong Kong.  It is a Hitachi Travelstar model HTC426040G9AT00, Lenovo P/N 39T2690.
Now, I could just install this drive and reinstall WXPP from CD.  But I am stubborn and don't want to do that.  I want to preserve the utility partition.  And I want to learn how to clone a drive, as I have never done that before.
I have been trying for weeks to clone the old drive to this new drive.  I have been using
Symantec Norton Ghost v2003.775 to do this.  Finally it appeared successful and so I went to boot up on the new drive and the OS just hangs in a blank screen.
So I booted to the WXPP SP3 CD and ran a fixmbr and fixboot but that made no difference.
I am out of known options so I ask you folks:
How can I go about cloning both partitions on the original 20GB drive to this replacement 40GB drive?
    Thanks so much.

Have a read of my post here regarding cloning a T42. I'm very confident the method will work on your X40.
    Hope this helps

  • How to make new Maxtor 500 GB the primary drive on my G5

I filled my 160 hd which came with my G5 1.8 Mhz with applications and Iphoto pics. Now that am shooting raw, even larger files. I would like to use Photoshop and Lightroom, new upgrades are available, but my Hd has only 14GB left. I use backup to external hd , but don't know how to retrieve lost IPhoto pics (library) nor my Photoshop pics which I had given batch names, and file information to.
I tried putting the utility disc in thinking after installing the HD it wouod be recognized and I could proceed to install Tiger, partition a bootable drive, etc. I need a good reference. My books are to vague. I wrote another post on this topic and cannot find it anywhere??? Please refer me to any good reference articles in the apple database or other posts with people upgrading their internal hard drives. I want to be able to use all my apps from the biggest drive. I have been putting photoshop images into external drive and deleting from my primary drive to make space and limp on with barely any memory in my startup disc. What do people do when using big hog programs and large images files?

Swapping and adding a hard drive is asked almost daily.

Please be aware that you will need disk space on the primary drive to installed shared components plus contain the temporary files for installation.

  • How to clone a physical drive?

Hi, I have been trying to figure out how to clone my MacBooks hard-drive. It has OSX, plus Bootcamp and XP Pro partitions. My destination drive is an exact duplicate physical drive in an external USB enclosure. I want to clone the entire internal drive to the external drive, including all partitions and boot data. The DiskUtility, even when booted from CD, only supports cloning individual partitions. SuperDuper and other utilities seem to work the same. I tried the linux tool, G4L, and it did not recognize the external USB drive. I am trying to clone so that if the internal drive ever croaks, I can just drop in the drive thats currently in the external case - and have no down time. I only need to backup my machine this way once a month, so it doesnt matter how long the process takes - as long as it works! Any suggestions?

    Hi wh31415,
You can clone both your OS X and Windows partitions from within OS X. Partition your external so that the Windows portion is large enough to hold a disk image of the Windows installation on your main drive. Leave the rest for OS X. You can do this with Disk Utility.
Once you have the external partitioned, use WinClone to clone the Windows drive. You run it right from OS X. It creates a compressed disk image that can be restored from OS X also. It's free and works great.
For OS X, use either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner. Both can be run right from the OS X installation you're booted from. Just don't do anything else while it's cloning. Both are free, though the paid version of SuperDuper! is worth every cent for updating your backup.

  • Failed Drive, how to clone

My hard drive is failing in my iMac emc2389. It has bad sectors.
The computer will boot but locks up and becomes unresponsive. I do not have the option to install backup software to this computer to clone the drive. I do not have a backup.
I do have access to other computers though and have already removed the drive from the computer. I need a bootable solution so that I can clone my drive to a new drive. I tried using clonezilla but it failed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    CarbonCopyClone ($40 download).
SuperDuper has a free version that will clone but does not have all the bells and whistles of CCC paid.
But my concern is that your clone may not be valid if you make it using the drive that is failing.  *I would* find a way to boot from an external drive by installing the OS on it, then close the drive as if it were *just data*.  Else you may be cloning something that is self-destructing underneath you.
And that clone woul be suspect, in my opinion.  I would just use that clone for referecne, not to copy back.
Sorry if I sound not as hopeful as you would like, but this is my view of the situation.

  • I have just installed a 2 tera drive  in additional drive bay I would like to use it as my starup  or primary drive. Help... I need to transfer data...

I have installed a 2 tera bit drive in second drive bay. The starup drive is small. How do I transfer data and make new drive the startup or primary drive.. Thanks. In addition I will be pulling the small drive and installing a new larger drive a s back up. Also I need to initalize the new drive.. Wow.. O.K. I know that you are out there and can guide me. Merry Christmas to you all.. Many Thanks   Dennis

I suggest you download either CCC or SuperDuper.
Then clone the current system disk to the new system disk.
Reboot from the new disk after the clone is complete.
If everything is running correctly, you can then erase the old system disk.

  • Full primary drive mac pro. what next?

I have just about filled my primary drive so purchased additional 1TB drives for the second and third bay as I understand I have to keep my primary drive less than 100% full to maintain efficiency.
The question is how and what do I transfer off the primary drive to the second bay and how do I do it?
On the about this mac dialogue box it just lists the drive as full with "other". Are there any preferential items to move off the primary drive. I already reference my aperture library to an external hard drive.
Is there a simple way of doing this?
    Thanks a million.

I have not had an issue... going back to 10.2 which was really just beta OS X.
YMMV but it is simple to do now. People do it different? or they don't leave the /Users on the boot drive, or some screwed up program that doesn't follow the rules (never run into one myself).
Every application also lets you change where in preferences.
Some want to use symbolic links.
Dedicated boot drive works for most anyone. I used 15K SCSI, then 10K Raptors and WD VR as well as SSDs for boot drive. Home is often raid, some go with mirror, some stripe or just one drive.
There are as many different setup configurations as people.
Cost / Performance SSD $1.50 per GB while 10K VR $0.50 and the difference in MacPro is now very close and allows you to have a faster boot drive - I have tried and always found the WD Black in the past to not keep up with either of those. But they have gotten better but so has everything.
Even now 1TB Black goes for $125 for 1TB (last summer they went for $80).
The only rule is backups and bootable clone and know how so you can restore and manage.

  • Why do I need to Clone a drive partition...

...if I'm installing a new OS to another one??
I've got Panther--my current, albeit outdated, boot OS--installed on one partition of my Dual G4 (and yes, the limitations of this computer is one reason I'm not on Leopard yet)--and trying to install Tiger onto the 2nd partition (which will hopefully tide me over until I upgrade to a new iMac or Powerbook w/ Leopard). I don't have much experience upgrading to a new OS while one is working, so hopefully the older/current one will act as a backup safeguard if the newer one acts up.
Anyway, I haven't been able to install it yet--for whatever reason, it's not progressing beyond "Verifying Destination Volume," and I can't seem to verify the partition in Disk Utility due to Authentication issues, but that's ANOTHER issue--but unless that directly relates, I can't figure out WHY everyone keeps telling me that I should clone either drive (using Carbon Copy).
I already have all the important PERSONAL files from the current boot partition--and everything on the 2nd partition I'm trying to install to--backed up onto an external.
So why do I need to clone either drive?? Just trying to clarify here...

    phasmatrope:
I installed the new OS, Tiger, last night (which was actually fairly easy too... although it DIDN'T ask me if I wanted to do a Clean Upgrade, or an Archive & Install, which I'd heard were both options, which DOES worry me somewhat... but I suppose that's another post). It seems to be working fine thus far.
It is hard to tell exactly what installation option was used in your installation, but it you are satisfied that your installation is working as it should, I don't think you need to be concerned about it.
I figure in a few weeks, I may try deleting the clone from my partition (how long I should wait though, and whether or not I'll need to erase the drive entirely
So long as your installation is working well, and all your data that you backed up has been restored, and you are sure you will not be losing anything of value, you may delete the clone/backup...but wait until I respond to another of your questions.
what I'm wondering is: can I copy other material to that drive in the meantime without any problem?? After all, it IS a 300GB drive, and since I'd only cloned the 37 or so GB of my old boot partition there, I should be able to fit the 45 GB that are on the second partition onto there.
I suggest that you partition your 300 GB external HDD so that it can accomodate all your needs.
    • Partition your HDD so that one partition is approximately the size of your internal HDD. Then you can clone your new installation to that partition, and make regular backups to that partition.
    • You can create a second partition to accomodate the material of the second partition of the drive you clone. Give yourself sufficient room for expansion.
    • Create other partitions one possibly just for scratch, saving odds and ends or whatever.
Here is a step-by-step procedure for partitioning:
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
    Formatting an External HDD
    Connect external HDD to computer
    Turn on external HDD
Start up computer and log in
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and launch DU.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) of drive to be partitioned in left side bar.
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one. See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD
Note 2: For more partitions than one, after you have selected the number of partitions you can adjust the size of the partition by selecting the top partition and typing in the size; then move down if more adjustments need to be made..)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Optional: Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • How to clone Boot Camp partition when Winclone does not work

The hard drive in my MacBook Pro is failing. It has 2 partions, one for Apple and the other is a Bootcamp with Windows 7.
I tried repairing it with Disk Utility, which did not work. I also ran DiskWarrior, which resulted in the error message: "Directory cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failure". I was able to copy my Apple files through DiskWarrior although there were a couple of errors.
My question is how to clone my Bootcamp Partition. I tried making an image with Disk Utility but it failed. I also tried using Winclone and it failed indicating there were hard drive issues.
Is there another way to try to copy the Bootcamp partition? I can boot to Apple so running a program/app or trying UNIX commands might work.
    Thank you in advance.

Some previous forum comments I have collected regarding backup of BootCamp.
Acronis 2011 w/ plus pak, didn't work well previously
    Ghost 15 - probably not
Casper 6 works for Windows on Boot Camp only
CopyCatX is more lengthy and sector copy so takes the longest.
Paragon Hard Drive Suite 2011 because it works great and they have CampTune
Windows 7 system backup and restore - Apple's goofy HFS read-only interferes with system and file backup.
I have also used Casper, Clonezilla and Paragon but less regularly, Casper failed a few times, I stopped using it, Clonezilla worked but took forever (for me) Paragon (which I have only used twice) was the best but my sample is limited.
I have restored from DU, CCC, SuperDuper and TM, they all worked, TM was slower but not a lot, you can boot from the others, which I prefer.
Paragon HDM 2011 can do either offline or online backups, the difference is that with an offline backup, the entire partition (or disk) is unallocated. In an online backup, the backup utility is running against a partition that may be making changes to itself. When you run CCC or SD! in OS X, you're running an online backup. However, I would recommend (at least for the first backup) that you boot from the HDM recovery CD to do an offline backup. This will ensure that you have an *exact* copy of the parition/disk.
I tried the native Windows backup utility.  It worked to backup and restore my Windows partition, but I noticed a "bad" side effect.  When I would restore a Windows Backup to my HD, it would corrupt my MacOS boot partition, so I would then have to restore the Mac partition as well.
Winclone allows you to migrate your Bootcamp partition from one Mac to another Mac and make sure Windows will boot. However, if the processor (for example, Core Duo or i7) is a different type, the restored version of Windows may not be supported or be able to run on the new Mac. If you are migrating between Macs that are the same type (MacBook Air to MacBook Air, for example), you will have the greatest chance of success. You can try to restore Winclone images between different types of Macs (for example, a Mac Pro to a Mac Mini), but be aware that if Windows boots but does not reach the desktop, it is probably not an issue with Winclone, but rather the change in processor type.
