How to close documents in Preview?

I can't close anything in Preview. When I got to "Show All Windows" it show all kinds of things I've recently opened.
I go to each one and File > Window, and File > Close Selected Image but neither works. The window displaying the file disappears, but the file still shows up when I click and hold the Preview icon in my dock. I've tried the keystrokes (Command + W and Shift + Command + W), too. This just closes the windows, but nothing will keep them from showing up as open.
I don't see any preferences to stop this. Surely I can avoid showcasing everything I've been opening to anybody who might use my computer, right? SURELY.

One possibility:
Where are these windows appearing? If they are appearing along the bottom of the screen in Show all windows, they are not open but are being shown as your history of recent items. A sort of heavy-handed way to eliminate this display of recent items is to set "Number of recent applictions", "Applications", to zero in System Preferences, General.

  • I can't permanently close documents in Preview.

    Hi! I'm having some troubles with Preview on Mac OSX Lion. I usually open a lot of PDFs and Pictures and naturally opened with Preview... But with the addition of Resume the pictures do show up again
    BUT its not that you just close the document and its gone...
    When I show the App Exposé and right click on the icon, it shows dozens of documents I have previously opened, still hidden and open in Preview!
    Any Help on this??
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    I'm having exactly the same problem as originally described in this post.  I've tried what is suggested but upon opening preview and going into expose, 10 or so photos are displayed in the lower half of the screen.  Can anyone please advise how to close them permanently?  If I click on a photo, it opens in a large window and if I click close then go into expose, it's still shown in the lower half of the expose screen.  Please help.
    Thanks

  • Can't close documents in Preview or TextEdit

    I have a simple problem which I just cannot find any discussion of how to fix.  In both TextEdit and Preview (classic culprits on Lion), I have documents I can't close.
    When I click the close button it waits for a few seconds then does nothing.  Same for menu commands.  If I quit and reopen, the app opens with those windows.  If I restart, the app still has those windows.  If I "Duplicate" a file, not only can I then not close that file either, but I also can't "Save" the file (to give it it's own name).
    I have several document open now in Preview which are basically permanent fixtures of the app.
    I imagine the version store is corrupt.  Can I delete it?  where is it?

    Is it save to hunt down the versions of those files and delete those?  Or is there only one, huge versions file for the whole drive?
    It is a critical operation - I would only attempt it if you do not know your System well. I suspect one of the Frameworks in /Library/Frameworks might be corrupt, that can happen, if you install some app that installs its own Frameworks, and accidentally installs an incompatible version. So what you would have to do is to compare the backup of the /Library/Frameworks folder with your current Frameworks and try to spot a difference and then to restore that different file. You need to quit all Applications while you do that, and still you would risk to cut the branch  that you are sitting on - this operation is best be done from a second machine, so as not to change the system while it is running. It would be safer to reinstall Lion by booting into the recovery HD.
    Before you take any drastic measures, perhaps another test: Do you have a second account on your system? Then it would be a good idea to check if "Preview" and "Textedit" show the same buggy behaviour when started from another account. If they work fine, then the problem must be caused by something in your user library and not in the system library.
    Also you could try to boot into "Safe Mode". This will turn off start up items and third party extensions, that may cause problems.
    If the problem occurs in all these tests, then I would opt for a reinstall.

  • How To Close Documents Without Closing Entire App

    Since the latest Pages update, when I close all open documents, it automatically closes the entire program and then I have to wait 15 minutes to start it back up. Is there any setting I can change to fix this?

    That is just how long it takes the app to open up, give or take.
    Version 5.1
    Sometimes on my hard drive, sometimes to Apple's cloud, it has the same problem either way.

  • How to close the scopes / preview window

    I guess I have the opposite problem that most people have (I did try to do a search on this one). I would like to close or disable the scopes/preview window. Is there anyway to do this?
    I am running 1 large monitor and would love to just have the main color interface fill the entire screen. (I have read that color is designed for 2 monitors.. but it's easier to fit one large (28") monitor on my desk rather than 2 smaller ones) In single display mode, I can minimize the scopes window, but I can't seem to maximize the main color window. If I do dual monitor mode, I can minimize the scopes window, but when I hit play, it pops up and jumps in front of my main window. I have a kona for my external monitor and I have an external scope.
    Is there anything I can do? Did Apple just not give us many ways to customize the interface (Can't re-size the main color window)? I am running color 1.0.4 on OS X 10.4.11 (on a G5), and have the ATI X800 XT.
    Thanks so much,
    Peter

    +Then the scopes screen jumps in front of my main grading window.+
    Don't know why this is happening to you. Under window set for a single display and restart Color. If your doing DVD/TV work the only monitor that going to be any help is a grading TV monitor. A second computer monitor would be a waste and useless.
    I have a two screen setup. I mainly do work for internet delivery. I have Color set up for single display. My main monitor (calibrated as close as I can get it) is better than my second monitor. And that's were I view my Quicktime videos. The second monitor is only used for programs tools/pallets. When I do something for TV I set up a second TV monitor.

  • How to determine the page count of the front document (pdf-Preview) with applescript?

    Hello, I'm a beinnger apple scripter, and I have 2 questions. First, im trying to find the code to generate a page count for the front document of preview. I tried something like this:
    choose file with prompt "Count the number of pages in this PDF file:" without invisibles
    do shell script "/usr/bin/mdls -name kMDItemNumberOfPages " & quoted form of POSIX path of result & " | /usr/bin/grep -o '[0-9]\\+$'"
    But I dont want to have to choose a file with the prompt, and Im not sure how to get the path or POSIX path of an open pdf that is the front document in prievew to then use that directory to select the file to run the shell script on. This is one step in a much larger sequence of automator/apple script commands for large print jobs.
    The large scale view is:
    1. seleting a group .musx Finale 2014 files and creating pdfs of all the documents
         -Achieved with Automator stuff: [Get selected finder items] [open finder items with Finale 2014] [run applescript to convert to pdf all the open files] (which I have working but without a proper repeat condition)
    2. sorting those those exports into even/odd groups
    3. making the even pages 2 up with a create booklet plugin
    3. combinging even/odd group pdfs in their respective folders
    4. sending the 2 up evens to 1 printer, and the singes to another printer.
    but at this stage in the code/automator this is what i'll need to be doing:
    1. Several pdf documents will be open and I need to determine the page count of the front document.
    2. With that result I need to determine if the pagecount is even or odd.
    3. If its even, I need to save as pdf in a file folder /desktop/PDF Export/Doubles
         - if its odd, I need to save as pdf pages from 1 to (pageCount -1) to /desktop/PDF Export/Doubles, and pages (pageCount) to (pageCount) to desktop/PDF Export/Singles. (example: A 5 page pdf will send pages 1-4 to folder "Doubles", and pages from 5 to 5 to Singles, A 1 page pdf will only send a copy to the folder "Singles." A 2 page pdf will send both pages to "doubles"
    4. once the even/odd pages have had pdfs made in the either or both of the folders, Im going to close the document and repeat for all other open pdfs.
    Which also brings me to my 2nd repeat condition question: how can I repeat (print, save as pdf, close) commands for open files and end the script once all files are closed? This can help me both at this stage, as well the coding stage before in creating the pdfs from open Finale/sibelius .sib/.musx files
    would it be something like this?:
    If front document exists
    try
    tell application "preview"
    <bla bla>
    end try
    end tell
    At stage 1 of the large scale i've gotten the files to export pdfs and close multiple files, but if i say "repeat 4 times" and i have 3 files it can do those commands but it gets stuck trying to repeat the code one more time. I need the repeat amount x to be the # of items in selection from the the original finder window.
    Thanks for the help!

    The following AppleScript will get the POSIX path and filename of the current PDF file. It will just return the integer value for page count. Note: The path retrieved is the actual path to the PDF file, unless it is on the Desktop. In the latter case, the path will be ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Preview/Data/Desktop/filename.pdf.
    The script assumes that the following folders exist, otherwise you will need a try block to test for their presence.
    The AppleScript dictionary for Preview does not provide a page dictionary entry, that would make a repeat loop and page range possible for saving individual page ranges.
    set pdfDoubles to POSIX path of ((path to desktop) & "PDF Export" & Doubles)
    set pdfSingles to POSIX path of ((path to desktop) & "PDF Export" & Singles)
    tell application "Preview"
      -- gets quoted POSIX path and filename
              set pdfFile to (get path of front document)
              set pdfName to (get name of front document)
      log pdfName
              set cmdArg to "/usr/bin/mdls -name kMDItemNumberOfPages " & pdfFile ¬
                        & " | egrep -o \"(\\d+)\""
              set pageCnt to do shell script cmdArg
      display dialog pageCnt
              if pageCnt mod 2 is 0 then
      -- even
      -- save pdfName in pdfDoubles
              else
      -- save pdfName in pdfDoubles
      -- save individual pages in pdfSingles
              end if
    end tell

  • I combined my two pdf documents on preview, but there is no save as button like everyone says there is. How do I save this thing?

    How do I save my combined pdf documents on preview when there is no save as button? I try to hit duplicate, but it only duplicates the first page of my 2 paged pdf

    There's actually just a "Save a Version" selection, which does not apparently do anything. It's not like "Save As" used to be where it gave you a dialogue box to rename the document. It just saves the original document with only one pdf, and not the other...

  • How do I get Pages to close documents on quit?

    Sometime in the recent past a change was made to Pages.... it use to close all documents on quit, and ask to save things. Now it just quits and holds onto all the documents, so by now I have a million open documents when I open Pages, since it never closes anything on quit. How do I set it to close documents on quit.... because most of the time this is how I clear my desktop/workspace of documents I'm done with. Currently they never close unless I specifically close each one individually....and at this point Pages is useless to me.
    Thanks
    z

    You might consider System Preferences > General > Close windows when quitting an application. Right above it, is Ask to keep changes when closing documents. If you select that, you can quit from Pages, and it will challenge you to Save your content, or revert to the prior version edit. The following is the dialog you receive from Pages v5 with this setting when you just Quit the application.

  • How to close 100 documents in CS5 desktop application

    Hi,
        I have list of document e.g 100 and want open,flow,save and closed it.
        The step i have taken is
       1.Opening a document as
                             SDKLayoutHelper objLHelper;
                             UIFlags uiFlags = K2::kSuppressUI;
                             IDFile idTemplateFile;
                             FileUtils::PMStringToIDFile(sTemplatePath,idTemplateFile);
                              docUIDRef = objLHelper.OpenDocument(idTemplateFile,uiFlags);
         2.Importing template native xml on document.
    3.Saving document as

                           FileUtils::PMStringToIDFile(sDocpath,idDocFile);
                           objLHelper.SaveDocumentAs(docUIDRef,idDocFile,uiFlags);
    4.And Closing document as         IDocFileHandler::CloseCmdMode cmdMode = IDocFileHandler::kSchedule;
             objLHelper.CloseDocument(docUIDRef,kFalse,uiFlags,kFalse,cmdMode);

    Hi,
        I have found solution of my problem.It is something trikey but it working fine.
    As a beheviour of indesign desktop cannot possiable to do that so you can do as
    1.For example you have 100 documents in your for loop
    2.open document by calling javascript
    var myDocument1 = app.open("E:\\Templates\\MyDoc.indt",false);
    2.Save by sceond javascript call
    if(app.documents.length != 0)
            var activedoc = app.documents[0];
            activedoc.save("E:\\Templates\\MyDoc.indd");
    3.Get a document index no and by that achive a document pointer by using one script provider event that will used in the C++ code
    if(app.documents.length != 0)
            var activedoc = app.documents[0];
            var s = activedoc.toSource();
            var ret = app.speak(s);
    4.And finally closed the document
    if(app.documents.length != 0)
            var activedoc = app.documents[0];
             activedoc.close();
    Hopefully helpfull to such problem.
    Thanks

  • How do you digitally sign or electronically sign a document in Preview?

    Heya
    I'm wondering if it's possible to "digitally sign" or "electronically sign" a document in Preview? This feature exists in Adobe Acrobat. If not, does anyone know a workaround or plugin to accomplish this? Thanks!

    I believe the free Acrobat reader (9) will do that.
    Otherwise you'll need the Pro version.
    Here is what the Reader page says:
    With each new release, Adobe continues to add functionality to Adobe® Reader® software, making it an extremely versatile tool capable of viewing, searching, *digitally signing*, verifying, printing, and collaborating with electronic documents.
