How to color an 8-color chart?

I'm having trouble figuring out how Kuler can help me come up with a color scheme for charts.  I know practically nothing about color theory (like most people) and would love to take advantage of the wonderful creativity here in the Kuler community to create color-coded charts (think pie-chart) that have some beauty in how the various colors of the chart relate to each other.
While -- down the line -- it would be nice for me and many others in my shoes to have ways of coming up with color schemes for various number of elements, in my case (as an example) I currently need an 8 slice chart.
How does one come up with eight colors that work together?
Thanks in advance,
Bruce

drewda6,
That is a great suggestion -- just the type of thing I was looking for (particularly the 'number of data classes" dropdown at the top)!
I don't think that the fact that it is for maps and not charts will be a problem.  I was just looking for ways of determining X number of colors that 'get along well.'
Thanks again!

How do you change a brush tool color in Photoshop13. The color chart that has always been on the right side of the screen is gone and I cannot find out how to turn it on

I now have the pallete on the right side of my screen. But, I am unable to change the color of the brush. I move the eye dropper over red and click on it. A panel comes saying 'Pure Red', I click ok but the brush color does not change.

I'm a lazy hobbyist, no Macbeth in use, but I bought for cheap  a White Balance plug-in from fcpeffects.com

Then, it adds a color-picker in FCPX:

Use a roundtrip to DaVici Resolve, which is perhaps better suited for professional color correction than a 19$plugin

  • Correct a jpg using Macbeth color chart?

    Hi--
I shot some photos in jpg (it was all I had at the time) but I was able to include a Macbeth color chart. I'm looking to achieve accurate color, but beyond white-balancing I'm not sure how I can utilize the color information. I tried saving the jpg as a dng and creating a profile for it, but I was unable to then apply the profile because my only choice in ACR was "Embedded."
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
    John

if your trying to get a color profile from your jpeg files, here's some thing you can try. if you have lightroom import the .jpeg files in there, select the photo you want and right mouse>edit in>open as smart object in photoshop. once the file is imported into photoshop double click the .jpeg smart object layer. the layer will open up in the RAW editor.
you can open the Macbeth color chart in there and get a profile setting and save it. then apply the settings to the other photos.
i know that i could have done it in lightroom but i'm still not very comfortable with the interface, i just use it to organinze and select photos. i've been editing RAW for longer than i've had lightroom so i'm more familiar with fixing it in photoshop.
not sure if this helps but it was a wonderful discovery for me when i wanted to fix some jpegs using raw mode.

  • CMYK color chart/color book -- any recommendations?

    Hi folks,
Any recommendations for a CMYK color chart/wheel/book?
    Thanks

'PMS' is obsolete, it is Pantone now, and if you say just Pantone, that is ambiguous because there are all kinds of Pantone books.
The printer is not after the cmyk breakdown, if they were, you would know that they are not colour managed.
They DO NOT require the numbers!
The way Pantone Matching works, is that the swatch (printed with certain dot sizes by a particular printer) has a particular appearance in specific circumstances:
eg: *  A blueish swatch in your "Pantone coated process" book has a particular appearance
          *  You choose the swatch
          *  The Swatch appears in your swatch palette with a cmyk mix based on your working profile and a name defined by Pantone, NOT fixed numbers as you might have thought.
          *  You output a press ready PDF to the PRINTER's nominated profile, the numbers change!
This is correct behaviour... the numbers will be different at each printer's RIP because they have fine-tuned their plate screens to output a colour that is close to the ideal appearance of the reference swatch.
If you saw the colour defined as 50 Cyan plus 20 Magenta that does not mean they see the same numbers, that is exactly the point, the numbers are irrelevant which is why you don't specify colours in CMYK terms any more.  The printer might see 48 Cyan and 23 Magenta due to their using a different ink set or dot gain characteristic on their press but they will get the same visual result.
This happens because both parties (Press and Pantone) and you have looked at the same reference and calibrated their equipment to suit.
Pantone made the book, you adjusted your monitor and proofing device, the printer adjusted their press/RIP/proofer to all look alike.  Each device has a colour profile that tells the next device how it saw a colour, the colour management software converts one to the other.
There..... colour management in a nutshell of infinite size. (as per Hamlet)

  • HSB Color Space Question - How Many Colors Are There In Photoshop

Hello guys, I have a sort of basic question that I have been trying to figure out for a few days.
I am trying to find out how many colors there are in the Color Picker  when the Hue radio button is selected.
I know there are 256^3 RGB (#Hex) colors, and I am trying to find some relationship when I am coloring with HSB color space in Photoshop.
It just confuses me because the Hue slider goes from 0-359 and the S and B goes from 0-99...
So how many HSB colors in Photoshop are there?  Am I missing out on some colors by using HSB color space in Photoshop as oposed to using RGB?
Are there the exact same amount?  Are there more and there are duplicates in HSB space mode?
Thank you all for all your help, much appreciated
    Travis

The deficiency of such mathematical models is that they do not take into account noise and human perception. In an 24 bit RGB space (8 bits per channel) there may be 16 million colors, but this assumes that there are 256 discrete levels in each color channel. You could increase the number of colors by using a 48 bit space. In practice, noise will reduce the number of discrete levels, and this will vary with the camera and ISO used in that camera. For example, consider the Nikon D5000 as evaluated by DXO. At  base ISO the camera can resolve only 21.8 bits of color information and this decreases to 15.6 bits at an effective ISO of 2079 (camera ISO setting of 3200).
    http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/Image-Quality-Database/Nikon/D5000
Then you have to consider how many of these colors can actually be differentiated by the human visual system. If you can't see a difference, it really doesn't matter. These differences are difficult to quantitate. One such effort uses MacAdam ellipses shown in this Wikipedia article on a CIE 1931 xy plot. How many of these ellipses are contained in the CIE xy space? The DXO site has similar ellipses for real world camera images.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacAdam_ellipse
See this RIT FAQ for a more sober real world analysis. The actual number of colors is in the millions, but likely not 16 million.
    http://www.cis.rit.edu/mcsl/outreach/faq.php?catnum=1#219
In a real world situation, I would not be overly concerned about differences between the RGB and HSB spaces, but one could increase precision by using a 48 bit space.

  • 24" iMac - How many colors?

The specs. for the 24" iMac display state simply "millions of colors." At the same time the specs. for, for example, a 23" cinema display state very specifically "16.7 million colors" (which I believe would be 24 bit color). So my question is, specifically, how many colors will the 24" iMac display really produce?

Do you know (or does anyone else know) how to tell if a monitor uses the 8-bit S-IPS panels?
Is there a label on the monitor or is there a software test available to determine this?
    There are several possibilities:
    1) tftcentral.co.uk has an extensive database that lists LCD panel part numbers
for many popular monitors. They also have a listing of panel specs -- sorted by
    manufacturer's part number.
    2) The monitor's "viewing angle" specs are a strong clue. 160 degrees or less is
    a fairly sure sign of a TN panel. 178 degrees generally indicates an S-IPS panel;
panels in the 170-175 degree range are likely to be S-PVA or a similar type of
high-quality panel. If it's not TN, it's almost certainly an 8-bit panel.
    3) For iMacs, you can download a copy of SwitchResX.app and interrogate the
panel type with "Export DDC." The last few lines of the DDC information block
indicate the manufacturer's part number of the panel -- and with that, you can
    find the specs on tftcentral.co.uk.
    4) Google. Online reviews by Xbitlabs.com, tomshardware.com, tftcentral.co.uk,
etc. often reveal the panel type.

You can use something like this as the custom validation script of the
    drop-down:
    if (event.value=="Customer A") event.target.textColor = color.red;
    else event.target.textColor = color.black;
Make sure you tick the option to commit the selected value immediately

  • Custom color chart reference?

Is there a way to load a custom color chart to use as a reference when using the chart option in the DNG Profile Editor?
What I would like to do is shoot a color chart with Kodachrome, then shoot the chart with my D700 and create a profile for my D700 that matches the chart shot on Kodachome.

There have been discussions about this in the other Adobe forums. I tried following them, but I'm afraid I'm not technically savvy and didn't understand some of what was said. But basically, there is no way to adjust by numbers at this point.
