How to compare two libraries

I recently bought a 17-inch MBP to replace my old WindTunnel G4 as my primary machine. (The G4 will still be in service as a server.) I'm in the process of bringing my iTunes library over to the MBP, a process that has been made much easier by Home Sharing in iTunes 9. Thank you, Apple, for this feature!
My question is, when I connect to the shared library, iTunes on the MBP shows 41 fewer tracks than iTunes on the G4 shows. With nearly 200GB of music (over 40,000 tracks) in my library, manually comparing the two libraries to determine which tracks are missing would be an exercise in boredom and futility. Is there any automated way, any software, that I can use to compare the contents of the two libraries so I can locate the missing tracks and figure out what's wrong with them? I'm not averse to using Terminal if that's going to be the most straightforward way to do it.

I am in the same boat as you are Mark. I only have about 88G and 16,000 tracks of music (that does not include any video), and in trying to manually compare two libraries from directory listings by hand is not the way to do things. I am also thinking that creating some output listings for the directory is the solution, but the directory structure is not the same, and would require some level of automation for dumping the differences. I am a tad rusty at my unix scripting to say the least, but I guess I could pull out some of the old reference books. Even if a properly specified ls command could give an output format to pull into an excel file? and then be able to do the diff there with some small tweaking ? I've gotten myself into a bit of a mess with this (nothing that can not be resolved with some careful cleanup), but I don't want to have to rebuild another new library from my old master if I could do a diff between the two, so I can add the remaining 10G (estimated) that is missing in the new library.
Hopefully by replying to your thread someone else will spot this and can give an assist.
I am missing a lot more than 41 tracks, I am guessing a few hundred (200 - 300 plus?).
One place to check on the old library is in the unknown folders? (unknown album or unknown artist?) and also to check under what is labeled as a compilations folder.
I think what created part of my problem is that I suspect the new directory structure (part of the new iTunes version) placed on top of the old directory structure (prior iTunes versions - when the orig library was created back in 2003 and then moved to an external device) was something I did not clearly understand or investigate sufficiently prior to starting to move things around. I have not lost anything (i.e. the physical files are all still there in the old master, along with a backup), but certainly the new master is not in full synch with the old master.
I would have preferred to be far less cognizant of some of these things, but as this exercise continues some of this gets unearthed.

    On top of all this, I can't even find out how to file a complaint with anyone higher up than Customer Service.
    I hate to tell you this, but you didn't write an email. You wrote a discussion post on the Verizon Wireless Community forum which is a public peer to peer forum. Unfortunately since you didn't mark your post as a question, the VZW reps that roam this community won't ever see your post. Before you re-post it, don't. Duplicate posts get removed from the community.
    I see there were several missteps both by the reps and yourself in your post. First you should have insisted on returning the phone within the 14 day return policy period. Second which Samsung Galaxy mini model did you purchase? The S3 mini or the S4 mini? Did you do any research prior to deciding on this device. The reps at that time deflected the easiest course of action, by trying to get you to replace the phone under insurance instead of returning the phone. The Early Edge payment option requires the current phone on the line using the early Edge must be returned to Verizon Wireless. Did you once considered going to a third party site like Swappa to purchase a gently used device for your daughter?

    If you're talking of rows within a PL/SQL associative array there are techniques as described in the documentation... e.g.

  • How to run two libraries? [11.0.0]

    Hey everyone. I've been using iTunes for a long time now, as it is a relatively good program for organizing my huge library> I don't use it to listen to music, but I often need to move files around and onto the appropriate devices for my family. Because of this, I got an external hard drive. From time to time, iTunes will forget that my library comes from my external. usually, this is after booting iTunes without having the external plugged in. This can be a nuisance, because iTunes then decides to fill up my laptop's free space with the large amounts of music I put on at once. It gets especially annoying when I need to consolidate files to ensure they are all on the hard drive because it will consolidate to the computer instead.
    My question is, how do I set iTunes up so it will always look for my hard drive and use that as the library first? Then, and only then, if it cannot find my hard drive, it will use my computer's storage. Most important to solving my problem is that during those times it uses my computer's storage, it should automatically use my hard drive if present upon restarting iTunes.
    I have figured out how to have two libraries, but I need to know how to put one on a higher priority and as a default that doesn't get changed.
    To recap, If I run iTunes without my external hard drive, it changes the library location to my computer and does not put the setting back to how it was.

    Aarowaim wrote:

    This is done by default, but it is up to the user to ensure the external or network drive is connected.
    Aarowaim wrote:

    Again, this is done by default.
    If the user fails to connect the external drive before started iTunes the following steps should be taken.
    Close iTunes.
    Connect drive.
    While holding SHIFT, launch iTunes.
    When prompted to locate or create a new library, select locate and point iTunes to the external drive.
    Is the iTunesLibrary.itl file actually on the external drive or is it on the C drive of the computer?

  • How to compare two Objects !!!!

    Hi All,
    I know that this question has been asked 100 times till now. But trust me I have checked all of them but couldn`t find answer. Here is my question:
    I have an objecs. In that object I am setting (Id,Name,DOJ). Now I want to check whether the object I am trying to save in database already exists or not. If exists then I need to check whether all the setters are same for the two objects. Now can anyone tell me ,how to compare two objects directly without comparing the setters individually.
    Thanks in advance.

    pavan13 wrote:
    That is pretty good idea. However I have a query. Does that code actually compare all the setters in a two beans. I don`t want to check each setter seperately.Well, it's pretty meaningless to talk about "comparing setters", setters are methods, they don't have values to compare. Because equals is inside the class, you can simply compare the fields that get set by the setters. "Properties" is probably a better name.
    In principal you could write something that tried to find all relevant fields and compare them, using reflection or bean info stuff. The resulting code would be about 50 times longer and take about 50 times longer to run. It's hardly asking a lot to put three comparisons between && operators.
    Remember, though, not to compare string fields with ==, you should call .equals on the string fields.
    p.s. don't let the bean terminology confuse you. Beans are just ordinary objects which follow a few rules. Personally I wish the term had never been coined.

  • How to compare two strings whether both are equal while ignoring the difference in special characters (example: & vs & and many others)?

    I attempted to compare two strings whether they are equal or not. They should return true if both are equal.
    One string is based on Taxonomy's Term (i.e. Term.Name) whereas other string is based on String object.
    The problem is that both strings which seem equal return false instead of true. Both string values have different special characters though their special characters are & and &
    Snapshot of different design & same symbols:
    Is it due to different culture or language?
    How to compare two strings whether both are equal while ignoring the difference in special characters (& vs &)?

    Hi Jerioon,
    If you have a list of possible ambiguous characters the job is going to be easy and if (& vs &) are the only charracters in concern awesome.
    You can use the below solution.
    Before comparing pass the variables through a replace function to standarize the char set.
    $Var = Replace($Var,"&","&")
    This is going to make sure you don't end up with ambiguous characters failing the comparison and all the char are "&" in this case.
    Similar technique is used to ignore Character Cases 'a' vs. 'A'

  • ??how to compare two resultsets??

    hi all!
    i need to find out whether two resultsets contain the same data.
    the only way i know how to do it in java is to put them into a while loop and fetch the contents first and then compare the contents.
    but is there an easier way to compare resultsets?
    does anyone know how to compare two resultsets without extracting the data?
    the code example here executes two identical queries on an oracle database, compare and print the resultsets.
    public ResultSet getResultset(String query)
    ResultSet rs=null;
    try { rs=Stmt.executeQuery(query); }
    catch(Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); }
    return rs;
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    ResultSet r1=null;
    ResultSet r2=null;
    try {
    database db = new ddatabase();
    r1=db.getResultset("Select 'name' from person");
    r2=db.getResultset("Select 'name' from person");
    if (r1 == r2) {
    System.out.println("ok");
    System.out.print(r1);
    System.out.println();
    System.out.print(r2);
    else {
    System.out.println("not ok");
    System.out.print(r1);
    System.out.println();
    System.out.print(r2);
    jdbc.cleanup();
    catch(Exception e) {e.printStackTrace();}
    and here is the output:
    F:\java rs_compare
    not ok
    oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleResultSetImpl@4413ee
    oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleResultSetImpl@786e64
    as you can see the resultsets are different though the data they contain have to be the same.
    so the 'if(resultset#1 == resultset#2)' does not work.
    thanks for any help
    best regards

    Don't cross-post.
    I'll bet ResultSet implementations don't override equals() to provide "deep equals" behavior, in which case it'll be no different than using "==".
    It's a bad idea to compare two ResultSets this way. You'll have to load both into objects or data structures and compare those in a "deep" way.
    Besides, the ONLY way two ResultSets could be different, given the same query, would be if there were multiple clients that could write to the table between queries and change the underlying data. If your two queries are sufficiently isolated, I'd say that the same query will return the same ResultSet.

    Or: get the procedure text to a file using dbms_metadata.get_ddl (9i and higher) and run diff (Unix) or fc (Windhoze) on it.

    I have two similar css files and want to have a third version with some properties from one and some from other file. But I do not know how to compare two files in DW. Is there some hint or program?
    Thanks.

    It might sound strange, but for this I use a word processing program. I build a table with three columns (in portrait or in landscape mode depending on your needs). I set the paragraph marks so that I can compare the paragraphs. The new combinated version I copy into the third column. And then the way is free to copy the new compounded text into your new DW file.
    Hans,
    Have you tried WinDiff, WinMerge, Beyond Compare (my choice) or Compare It! or several others which automate much of the manual system outlined above?

    These diff tools can then be used in conjunction with DW.
