How to compeletly uninstall a program?

I installed Symantec AntiVirus Protection which was free and from my school. I wanted to remove it because I have got a better one myself. However, even though i have removed the app from Finder and all related folders or files I could find, the software is still there!! every time I insert a disc, or connect a USB drive, or downloaded a file, the old 'auto scan' will start. How can I check if I have removed the software completely?

Are you unable to uninstall it from the app manager in the main settings menu? How about long pressing the app in the app drawer and dragging up to the notification bar? Does the app have a phone admin property checked in Settings-Security-Phone administrators? Sometimes, if it does, apps will not uninstall until unchecked.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

Empty The Trash
Dragging the Application Icon from anywhere else will not work.
The Icons of Applications in the (Finder > Applications) are actually the Application files.
If you right click an Applation in (Finder > Applications) and click 'Show Package Contents', all the files associated with the Application should be stored there.
So dragging the Application Icon in (Finder > Applications) to the Trash will uninstall it.

What app do you want to uninstall? If it's an app that is provided by the installation of OS X, e.g. Safari, Reminders, Notes, Mail, etc. - there are many others - they shouldn't be uninstalled.
If it is an app that was downloaded from the Mac App Store, in Launchpad click and hold its icon until it jiggles. Click on the 'x' in the corner to delete it.
If it's an app that was installed using an installer program it is always best to see if an uninstaller is available from the developer of the app (there is often an uninstaller bundled in with the installer package).
Other third party apps that are simply drag-installed into the Applications folder - like Skype, for example - can be just dragged to the Trash and will be deleted when the Trash is emptied.

So, if you see it in ->System Preferences->Users & Groups->[Login items], before you remove it with [-], control-click (right-click) the item and select Show in Finder to see where the program is located.

You can't just drag them to the trash?
There are third party software uninstallers if you want to make sure you clean up the stray preference files that get installed with certain apps.
I generally recommend AppZapper, but there are others, CleanMyMac for example. I like AppZapper because it is a straight up uninstaller and not anything else.
Give it a Google search, I'm sure there are more than that.

If the application did not come with an uninstaller, I use a program like AppCleaner (free).
It will usually delete .plist files and cache files that were installed with the Application. This is useful if you don't know where to look.
Just dragging the App to the trash is often not enough as you may not be aware of all the support files that were installed in caches, preferences, application support.
If I no longer have the disc image of the program, I will search for it on google, download the installer again and look for an uninstall option. If there isn't one, I use AppCleaner.

It depends of the software. Some software will came with an uninstaller. Some other will came with instruction as how to locate all the files that can be deleted. Others will gives you nothing.
As for most of the small software you can safely and simply put them in the trash without expecting issue it would be a good practice to check the on software developper website FAQ or the help provided with the software for uninstall instructions to follow.
If you want to erase completly, you can do a search with the software name (with the option to show hidden and system files) to locate the preference files or other related files. Beware though that if you unsure of the files you are then deleting, you may have more trouble that leaving it there. They are usually small files with no consequences.

I am trying to install the update for WOW but it won't install, On my desktop I had to totally uninstall WOW and do a clean install from the MoP DVD's and figured since the same issue with installing it was the same on desktop and macbookpro uninstalling WOW would be the best way to go. Help?? If I drag the WOW file to the trash will that do it or am I missing something else. I have never uninstalled any program from the Macbook as yet.
