How to completely reinstall to OS 10.4.5

I cannot get my HP printer to work correctly. Per the long discussion below, HP support suggests that the problem is with my OS. Their reasoning seems believable.
The OS X disk that I purchased is original 10.4. I would like to reinstall my system "cleanly" to get it to 10.4.5 to see if I can repair any problems that were introduced during the incremental upgrade process.
Can anyone point me to advice as to how to reinstall as completely, easily, and error-free as possible?
Thanks!
Hi, AchatesPatton
Based on the troubleshooting done so far, the only logical explanation
would be the OS itself. A full uninstall of the old/built-in HP
software and a reinstall with the 7.3.1 software/drivers online should
resolve any software issue.
If the problem was with the D135, there would have been some indication
of it during the detection of the D135 during the Setup Assistant phase
of the install, generally it would not 'see' the D135 at all.
There is no way through our training that we can narrow the problem down
any further, with good reason; a full/proper uninstall and reinstall of
the software as described earlier should resolve any software issue.
The only thing we could do now is attempt to fully remove the software
and redownload/reinstall the 7.3.1 drivers again. I do think that the
problem is a botched update of the OS itself (relatively common in one
form or another) and that a reinstall of 10.4.3 is needed. I would
suggest running the problem by Apple and informing them that you have
fully uninstalled ALL HP-specific software and then reinstalled with the
most up-to-date software available and that made no difference. The
fact that you've had the same problem since what I feel safe in assuming
was the first update to the OS (from 9 to 10?). I have personally
verified that there is no compatibility issues with any version of 10.4
and the D series all-in-one, so you are definitely not looking at a
compatibility issue. If there is anything else we can do, please get
back to us. We would much rather you be happy with the D135 (regardless
of it's warranty status), than not.
Sincerely,
Jay

Hi. Thanks for the quick reply.
Unfortunately, the advice you give is the same as what I received from
HP
before and what I've already attempted without any luck (vide infra).
Is there anything specific you can suggest that I haven't tried yet to
get
this problem fixed? Is there a specific log we can look into to
determine
exactly what the problem is, rather than scatter shooting like this?
Thanks.
Please see extensive description below. I have done everything everyone
has
suggested, especially HP, to no avail (all except the Gutenprint driver
suggested by #1). My printer is now not printing at all, yet I can scan
images just fine and the HP shows up in Apple System Profiler.
Three queries:
1) Is there something else I can try?
2) Is there a specific log I can access to find out exactly what is
going
wrong, rather than scattergunning like this?
3) Could this be a hardware issue with the HP, rather than software?
Thank you| AchatesPatton
Print Jobs Stopping
Hi. I have an HP officejet d135 (all-in-one: printer, scanner, and FAX)
attached via USB cable to a G4 867MHz PowerPC that runs OS 10.4.3. The
driver software is up-to-date from the HP WEB site. The officejet d
series
(Printer) says it is Version 4.0 (157). I have had this same printer
through
multiple OS X versions, and the intermittent problem I see is more or
less
the same through all version of the OS X software.
Specifically, about 2/3 of the time when I try to print anything (Word
file,
PDF, picture, you name it) all goes fine to the point when the
“Officejet d
series (Printer)” window appears; then, instead of the printing process
starting, after a wait of ~30”, the Print Itinerary icon changes to
“Jobs
stopped”.
At this point, whatever I do to get it working again seems like voodoo.
Sometimes I can just click on the “Start Jobs” icon several times and
all
will run well. More often than not, however, I have to do other things
like
logging on as another user and opening print center from there to
complete
the printing, completely restarting the CPU, ejecting any attached
external
disks, unplugging the printer and plugging it back in, and who knows
what
else. Sometimes none of these work after 30 minutes of trying, so I just
go
away from the machine and, seemingly magically, I will be able to print
a
few days later|
I have reinstalled the print driver software, run Disk Utility, repaired
Permissions, run Disk Warrior many times and all seems to be AOK from
that
standpoint.
I am a neophyte about the printing process. Are there any references,
utilities or suggestions that I can follow to get a more reliable print
process? As mentioned, the printer eventually works, but it would be
very
nice to not have to spend half an hour most times when I just desire to
quickly print a one-page document.
Thank you so much|

I have three suggestions:
1. Launch Printer Setup Utility (Applications/Utilities), go to the PSU
menu, and select Reset Printing System. Then, re-select the printer.
This is
different from reinstalling the drivers.
2. Give Printer Setup Repair a try.
3. Use a driver from Gutenprint. It may already be installed as part of
the
Tiger installation, so you may be able to select it in PSU without
downloading it.

The only suggestion that I could make which would not echo what you have
already tried is to uninstall the HP Software (HP Uninstaller) and then
remove the remaining items manually (Manual Uninstall). After which we
would repair and then verify permissions (to allow for the manual
uninstall changes) and then reinstall the latest version of the HP
software. I am not certain that you want to spend the next 45 minute
trying these steps, but I will include the instructions so you at least
have the option.
FIRST: download the latest version of the HP Software # Drivers. To
download this software please follow these instructions:
1. Open your internet browser, and go to (( www.hp.com ))
2. In the lower, right-hand part of the screen, locate the text-field
for "Search". In that field, type the filename "d731EN.dmg" then
press enter.
3. On the page that appears click on the link from the results.
4. On the page that appears, scroll to the bottom and click on "Download
Now". The filename should be "d731EN.dmg". The download should
begin. By default, the file should download to your desktop. (The
actual time it takes for the download will vary with file size,
connection type and connection speed.)
SECOND: Uninstall the HP software. Browse to MACINTOSH
HD/APPLICATIONS/HEWLETT-PACKARD folder. Double click on "HP Uninstaller"
and follow the prompts. Once the application has completed, disconnect
the USB cable and then restart your Macintosh. Once your Mac has
restarted proceed with the next step.
THIRD: To manually remove the remnants of the HP software, please follow
these instructions.
1) Open Activity Monitor. It is located in Macintosh
HD/Applications/Utilities.
Select All Processes from the dropdown list in the upper right hand
corner. Quit the following processes by highlighting them and pressing
the Quit Process button (will vary by OS):
NOTE: Not all of these processes may be running.
" HP AiO Notifications.app
" HP Communications
" HP Director

" HP IO Classic Proxy
" HP IO Classic Proxy 2
" HP Trap Monitor
" HPIO Trap Monitor
" Hpusbmond
" Hpdot3d
" Hpdot4d
" pipedaemon
" print daemon
2) Remove the following files and folders by dragging them to the Trash.
NOTE: Some of the files described in the following steps may not be
found.
" Macintosh HD)Applications)HP AiO Software or the Hewlett-Packard

NOTE: This item contains information on starting up various application
components, by removing it you may notice some changes in the way these
applications operate.
Leave this file on your desktop for 3-5 days, after which it is safe to
trash it. Once you trash it, empty the trash and restart your Mac.
3) Delete the printer entries from the "Print Setup Utility" Printer
List, and any desktop icons. Also delete any HP items in the Dock
(printers or applications).
4) Empty the Trash again, and restart the Macintosh.
5) Repair # verify any permissions that might have been affected by this
removal of software:
a) Browse to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities folder.
b) Double-click the Disk Utility.
c) Upon the left side, select the Macintosh HD. (It will be indented and
usually is the second entry in that list)
d) On the right side, select the tab labelled First Aid.
e) Click on the button called Repair Disk Permissions.
f) Click on the button called Verify Disk Permissions.
This process may take several minutes, afterwards close the Disk Utility
by single-clicking the red dot from the trio at the top left of this
dialog box.
6) Reconnect the USB cable and then proceed with the installation.
close all active windows and quit any active applications or utilities,
and double-click on the downloaded file to begin the installation.
Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
Once this is complete, test the printing and scanning features.

I have a similar problem with my HP 2410, which used to be quite
reliable
but now enters the job stopped issue. I find that pulling the usb and
reconnecting and hitting job start usually works. It seems the problem
occurs when the printer appears to sleep (?). I did a search of "HP job
stops" in this Discussion and found a lot of potential fixes, which I
haven't yet tried myself. You may want to check it out yourself to see
if
there is a similar match to what you need in order to fix it.

I had the same problem with my i850 (Jobs Stopped) and solved it as
follows.
Got this info on Apple's site
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301185
1. Went to Applications/Utilities/Printer Setup Utility
2. Under Printer Setup Utility menu, clicked on Reset Printing System
3. Quit Printer Setup Utility
4. Went to Apple Menu/System Preferences ...
5. Opened Print # Fax, clicked on Add and confirmed that I wanted the
i850
printer.
I can now print on my i850 through my Airport Extreme as I did with
Panther.
I'm much happier with Tiger now ...
Hope this is helpful.
G4/867   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hello Achates:
I did not read the rather long post. If you wish to reinstall OS X 10.4, use your software install DVD. Backup is essential. To minimize your risk, I would use an archive and install:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
In that way, you will have a fresh copy of OS X and your current settings will be preserved.
Incidentally, I do not agree that the printer problem is best solved by reinstalling OS X. I have had HP printers for sometime and, on one occasion, had difficulty after an upgrade. HP technical support walked me through uninstalling all traces of the HP driver and then reinstalling.

  • Mail keeps crashing How to completely reinstall Mail

    Hi,
My mail application keeps crashing. When I try to open mail, the app crashes. I store all my mail in the cloud so I am not worried about my messages, but I can not delete the old files and re-install the application.
I have reinstalled OSX Mountain, deleted the plist file in settings and deleted the Mail folder in library/mail/v2 all to no avail.
My question is, how can I completely delete all mail files and settings, reinstall the mail app and start from scratch.
    Thanks

To copy between different accounts could be easy to use an USB plug and do it step by step while changing the user account
Mail.app is in the Application folder (of both Accounts).
The Mail folder (to copied with its full content) is under Library of each account.
Do you know how to go to Library ? Open Finder.. selct Go and in the list of targets Library will appear as soon as you press option.
Before coping the Mail folder from the new account to yours you may rename your Mail Folder to Mail-old in a way you will not overwrite it. You will delete it after being sure anithing works.

  • How to completely reinstall & start over with Messages?

Messages/iChat/AIM/iMessages has always behaved spotty since I purchased a new HD and installed Mavericks on in a few months ago.
I use Messages every day: have for years, and it's running in the background, 24/7 and I use it for screensharing, teaching other Mac users (both their screen and my screen), video conferencing, even just the audio. It's absolutely integral to my business and life.
And it's really broken currently on my awesome Mac Pro:
Messages don't go through (I get the red exclamation point next to the message)
texts show up on my iPhone 5 but then sometimes they don't. Sometimes they show up on both (which is perfect)
Buddies that I've video conferenced with for years no longer can connect—this is the biggest issue. Even after installing a new Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (ME918LL/A) in an attempt to fix this.
It forgets settings, and it often can't see USB devices (mics, camera, headsets, etc), this is even after I had the bus logic board replaced.
It even changes the font size and font name that I've selected in Preferences: Viewing (this is just totally odd)
    Troubleshooting that I've done:
deleted the .plist files in both Libraries
removed all accounts and rebuilt them
Set up my AIM, my iCloud, and a GMail account, just to try and capture all protocols
the logic board hasn't been removed or flashed
I'd like to simply start over. Is there a suggested way to do this?

    Hi
The .plists that might effect this are the ones in ~/Library/Preferences
I am not sure what your mean by "both".
The Airport Base Station should be using Port Mapping Protocol which works like UPnP in allowing apps to effectively tell the device which port to open.
The Preferences not staying set in the Viewing pane is odd as they are stored in com.apple.ichat.plist with all the other settings (except the Account ones that have their own .plists)
Does the Bandwidth stay set ?
Do Buddy list stay separated if you set it so in the General section ?
Does the Menu Bar icon stay on Display if the Show Status is ticked ?
To reinstall the app needs a complete OS install (Recovery mode)
However this will leave your Home Folder untouched (Same .plists will be involved).
Have you tested in another Mac User account ?

  • How to "completely" reinstall FF, and recover ONLY cookies & Bookmarks?

I installed FF 3.6.10, and made the mistake of importing IE8 Settings (hooks...!), along with Bookmarks & cookies!
FF has been my primary browser for quite awhile, and I have added Many new bookmarks/cookies.
Now I want to "completely" uninstall 3.6.10, and install 3.6.11.
I want to recover Only FF cookies & Bookmarks, and Not import anything from IE8?- no Settings for sure!?
    How can this be done?

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

    Hi,
You have not specified which version of Premiere Pro was given to you. If you don't have the disc (which i suppose you don't have) you will have to download it online.
As far as your registration is concerned, for Premiere Pro CS6 or earlier you will have to reach Adobe chat support for further help: http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html
For Premiere Pro CC and later, you will not have much problems reactivating it.

  • I was having problems with a 7-month old version of office for mac 2011, so I completely removed it from my computer. How do I reinstall it?

Office for Mac 2011 worked fine until yesterday, then I started having problems. I know I completely deleted the trial version, so please do not suggest that as the cause. I also know that I bought a legitimate full version online from the Microsoft store 7 months ago, and I still have the product key. But since I don't have any trace of Office on my Mac anymore, how do I reinstall it? I tried looking on the Microsoft website, but it wasn't helpful. The only other thing I can do is contact Microsoft customer support, which will probably take forever. So, to respond to this post, please: do not mention trial versions for Office, do not mention Microsoft website. I tried posting another question on this topic, but the people who replied did not seem to understand that their suggestions were not relevant.

I see you had another post for this same issue where you clearly explained your problem.  There were important details in your other thread that would have helped us in assisting you.  You started this new thread, understandably frustrated.  None of us are mind readers.  You started right off telling us not to mention the only two things that would resolve the problem you had mentioned here which was simply that you had uninstalled office and you were trying to reinstall it.  Reading your other thread, it's clear why you made that comment.  It's generally not a good idea to open multiple threads for the same issue as anyone reading this thread would have no idea what steps you have already taken and what suggestions have already been made.

  • HT4759 How to Completely Uninstall iCloud? Office 2007 Save As Crashes

I can no longer use "Save As" in Office 2007 since I enabled ICloud.  Word and Excel Crash. And Outlook does not seem to be about to send more than one email at a time.  I have to select the Send/Receive button right after I create a new email.  If I wait and create a second email, the first email in the outbox changes status from ready to send to cannot send.  And even if I open it and try to send it, it will not send.  I have to re-create it.
I want to know how to thoroughly uninstall ICloud.  Other posters on Microsoft (Girish M) and Apple (SkinnyNick) have indicated that the problem is related to ICloud.  And I can confirm that I started having problems right after enabling ICloud.  Here are the references:

I spent a lot of time trying to trouble shoot this problem.  I ran the Office install to repair.  This did not work.  I uninstalled all Office 2007 related products.  I then manually purged all directories relating to office including the Common Shared Directories.  Then, I ran Microsoft's FixIt to uninstall Office to make sure everything was uninstalled.  Then, I reinstalled Office 2007 and it still failed.  I thought about installing Office 2010, but the second post (above SkinnyNick) indicates that this would not work.
So, I am looking for a way to uninstall iCloud including that parts that is causing this problem.  Now, the second post (above) from
SkinnyNick) says that he tried to uninstall iCloud but this did not fix the problem.  He finally reconfigured iCloud by de-selecting Outlook, but I would rather completely remove iCloud.
Can anyone provide instructions on how to completely remove iCloud so that my Office 2007 products will function again using Save As?
    Thanks,

As a Windows Application Developer who has more than 28 years of professional development experience, I can tell you that anything is possible in terms of how developers implement their applications. I have seen just about everything under the sun, and it would not surprise me if Apple's iCloud not only places files in key Windows directories, but it may use configuration information in a file as opposed to the Window Registry to control how their application behaves. And this would prevent “System Restore" from fixing the problem. Configuration information can be stored in many places. And, even if you do use the Windows Registry to control how your application works, you can key off of new files (like a user profile file) to control how your application to behaves. Csound1, you have been very generous with your time, and I am very grateful for your advice. Thank you.

  • How can I reinstall parts of CS2 suite w/o harm to standalone AI CS3, CS4?

On my G4 I have been using Photoshop CS2 from the suite, but over the years as disk space has gotten slim, I've deleted my InDesign and Illustrator CS2 folders to make space. Because the suite is expensive and unwieldy, I have upgraded Illustrator CS3 and CS4 as stand-alone applications (these are upgraded from my FreeHand 10 serial #).
I used to have my applications scattered between two partitions on my hard disk but have enlarged the OS10 partition and shrunk the (rarely used) OS9 partition so there's room on the OS10 partition to put all my applications and files on one disk. Unfortunately, the last time I resized the partitions, I neglected to run a disk utility first, so had to reinstall OS 10.4.11.
Nearly everything works again, except I seem to have lost some sort of permission or activation file for Photoshop CS2. (I've already thrown away the "previous operating system" that the reinstall saved). When I try to reinstall or reactivate Photoshop from my CS2 suite installation disk, the installer thinks I still have all the applications installed (except Version Cue, which I seem to have successfully deleted entirely once upon a time). There is no option in the installer to restore/refresh/reinstall a program I've already installed (i.e. if I damaged a file).
I can find "uninstallers" for CS3 and CS4 applications, but all I have for CS2 is the PDF with instructions for how to chase down and delete a dozen or so files from libraries and preference folders. Some of these are easy to find. (They tend to have 2005 and 2006 creation dates). Other files and folders seem to be intermingled with items installed by (and NEEDED by) Illustrator CS3 and CS4. So I am reluctant to delete every last file on the PDF instructions.
Is there a specific file or folder I should delete that will make the CS2 installer think there are no CS2 applications already installed? I'm happy to do a complete reinstall, but I'd like to not have to reinstall my later copies of Illustrator too. (Mac OS 10.4.11, PPC chip)
At this point I've deleted about 2/3 of the items on the uninstall instructions, and I've emptied the trash, but no luck re-installing. Any ideas?
    Thanks - Ben

Oops! Housekeeping again. When cleaning out my old drive partition, I had left the CS2 applications in the old applications folder, and copied the contents to the main applications folder. I intended to hang onto the old CS2 files until I was sure they were no longer needed, or the new ones worked; instead I forgot about them.
Although I had deleted the CS2 files from the new application folder, the installation disk detected the ones in the old location, and wouldn't let me install new ones. I erased those files and it's now reinstalling properly.
    Thanks for your help.

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How do I reinstall GarageBand 6.0.5 on my MacBook Pro Retina running OS X Mavericks?

I have recently installed the latest version of GarageBand on my recently purchased MacBook Pro 13" Retina. After discovering two GarageBand icons in the Launchpad, I removed the older version, only to discover that the app was also automatically erased from the drive instead of being moved to Trash. I now need the older GarageBand 6.0.5 as the newer version 10.0.1 lacks certain essential features that the older one had. However, due to the lack of a restore from Trash option (due to the unexpected automatic erase once removed from Launchpad) as well as a complete lack of installation DVDs in the newer MacBook Pros, how do I reinstall GarageBand 6.0.5?

After discovering two GarageBand icons in the Launchpad, I removed the older version, only to discover that the app was also automatically erased from the drive instead of being moved to Trash.
That is what deleting from the Launchpad is supposed to do - removing the icon and uninstalling the app. It follows the model of the IOS home screen, where you can browse and remove apps installed on the iPad or iPhone.
if you want to clean up your launchpad without uninstalling applications, create a folder in the launchpad by dragging the icons on top of each other. I have one folder apps that I have never used, but do not want to delete.
I now need the older GarageBand 6.0.5 as the newer version 10.0.1 lacks certain essential features that the older one had.
Have you a Time Machine backup of your system, that goes back in time before the time you deleted GarageBand '11? I have seen some posts of forum members, who downgraded the system back to MacOS 10.8.5, but even that did not make GB 6.0.5 appear at the AppStore again.

  • How to completely delete Photoshop Elements from my computer??

    Hi
I am trying to completely remove Photoshop Elements from my computer.   So far, I have failed in my attempts to do this.   The reason I'm doing this is b/c for some reason that I can't fathom, the folders in My Pictures -- the folders named by shot date -- contain random duplicates. When this happens, the file names folow the convention of DSC_0222 and DSC_0222-1. Exactly the same file size and metadata.  In some folders, every picture is duplicated. In other folders, only selected pitcures within the folder are duplicated.   I can't figure out how they got there -- e.g. it doesn't seem to bear any connection to the photos I've edited, which was one theory I had for a while.   Is Elements responsible? Or is this some sort of bug in the download process from the camera (I have a Nikon D40).  Anyway, I've given up on trying to sovle this problem and decided I would go back to the beginning and reload everything from my camera.   So, my real question here is about how to completely uninstall Elements.
Here's what I did:    I uninstalled Photoshop Elements through the Add/remove programs utility.  I got no errors during the uninstall process.   Then I completely deleted the My Pictures directory (don't worry -- I have it backed up in multiple places!!).   So, at this point there are *no* pictures on my computer at all.    I reinstall Elements, open it up and -- you guessed it!!! -- the catalog is still there with all the thumbnails of the pictures that i deleted from my hard disk.   Of course, each thumbnail is flagged as "Missing File".
So, how do I uninstall/reinstall Elements and get it to forget all memory of the previous catalog?   Why is it "remembering" it in this way when the pictures aren't even on the computer anymore?  Isn't this a bug???
I've been working on this issue for much longer than I care to remember-- if anyone can tell me how to get myself truly back to ground-zero so I can start over I would be deeply grateful.   After upgrading to Elements 9 (from 7) to try to solve this problem I am close to just abandoning Elements entirely.....
WHile we're at it, if anyone has any idea where the duplicates pictures are coming from and how I prevent that from happening, I'm' all ears!!!!
    Thanks!

    Hi
Thanks so much for the response.   So, Help/System Info says that the catalog is here:
    Catalog Location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\My Catalog\
but no such file appaers to exist.  In fact, I can only get as far as All Users.   Then there is no directory under that called "Application Data".
i'm still seeing the thumbnails when I got into Elements tho'....   :-(

  • How do I reinstall apps after doing a clean install on my MBP?

My 2009 MacbookPro is running slow and crashing every now and then so I want to do a complete erase and reinstall of the OS. I am running Snow Leopard but will probably upgrade to Lion afterwards but not until I have everything back up and running properly again.I have my TimeMachine backup and also have a second copy of the folders and files I will want to restore onto the clean system. I don't want to simply restore everything again from TimeMachine as that will probably just bring back all the icky stuff that was causing the slow down in the first place.
I have purchased some applications from the App store so they are currently showing "installed" instead of "Buy", so how do I reinstall them again to my fresh system? If I click on the button will it still download even though it says "installed", or if not, how do I do that?
    thanks

How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. • How can I reinstall deleted free Apps which now show as installed but are not actually there?

How can I reinstall free Apps that I have deleted (because ALL stopped working) which now show as installed but are not actually there?
I loaded a bunch of free Apps (maybe too many?) right after I got my 4s yesterday, and at some point I noticed that none of the downloaded Apps would work. The screen would blink when I tapped the icons, but the Apps stopped opening. Resetting the phone didn't help, so I decided to delete all the Apps I had downloaded and start over.
I can get the "Purchased" list to show up by pressing Updates button (is there another way?) but the show as "installed" in greyed-out letter, so I can't figure out how to get them back.

Your iPad screens aren't completely filled up are they? If they are, you will only be able to find them using the search feature on the iPad.
