    You install the original shipping OS. If that came on a disk, use that. If it is newer than a late 2010 model, Use Internet Recovery: OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support

    Understood, the difference with iTunes being that Apple doesn't (currently) require you to enter any account info on the device until you try to purchase something from their store. Initial setup is just a connection to the iTunes software and you're good to go.
    While I understand that RIM wishes the account to be defined, they also need to be aware that doing so during the initial setup without proving an option to do it later, while failing to provide any means to change it afterwards (short of a device wipe) doesn't always suit the the situation. Hopefully they'll be reviewing the forums to gather feedback that they can incorporate into future software updates.

    To restore from backup see:

    If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
    You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
    Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

    how do i factory reset

    It all depends on which phone you have. If you have the LG phones, you tap on menu and then on Settings>Storage. Scroll down to Personal data and you will see Factory Reset. If you own a Motorola, you want to tap on Settings>Privacy and you will see Factory Data Reset. You know that all the information stored on your phone will be erased and you have to start all over. You have to get a Google account (unless you already have one), set up all your Email accounts, etc. Everything on your SD card should; however, not be effected. Unless you absolutely have to do a factory reset, I advise against it, especially if you downloaded a lot of apps from the store.

    Isn't it just a matter of holding in the reset button, and while its held, unplugging the power, waiting 5 seconds, plugging it back in, releasing the reset button?
    To my understanding, that won't or shouldn't delete data written to the drive.
    But what will the 'reset' button on the back actually change or reset?? Which settings?

    how do i factory reset my ipad without the having the login password

    You force your iPad into Recovery Mode.
    Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
    3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button.
    5. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
    Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad. Data will be lost.

  • How do I factory reset my Macbook Pro and then restore using my time machine back up?

    Hey guys,
    My Macbook Pro has slowed down & had more and more random crashed recently and a friend suggested doing a factory reset. My Macbook is about 3 1/2 years old now so it's about time I did something and this always used to work for me on PC's.
    I've kept a completely up to date time machine back-up since day 1 (I'll do another immediately before the reset.) and would rather use that to restore all my files. Will I have to reinstall all my apps with this? (Thats fine if I do, it would just be nice to know first) How do I do the factory reset & how to I restore from time machine afterwards.
    Many Thanks
    MegaBeaker

    First obtain an external hard drive to back up to. Go to your system preferences and look under Time Machine. Select your external hard drive as your backup drive then start a full backup.  Then follow these steps provided by Apple:
    In the menu bar, choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command and R keys.
    Select Disk Utility, then click Continue.
    Select your startup disk on the left, then click the Erase tab.
    Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format menu, enter a name, then click Erase.Important:   Erasing the disk removes all the information from the disk. Be sure to back up the information you want to keep to an external device.
    After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
    Select Reinstall OS X, click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
  • How does a factory reset work?
    HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC
    QC400AV
    Windows 7
    I have had a problem with my intel graphics drivers not responding and then recovering. Went online to a remote access technician and they said that I had a lot of internal applications that are not working and suggested I have one of "their guys" go in and do some work...
    I have personally reinstalled the drivers myself and yet the problem still persist. I must admit that my event log is full of errors. Something like 3 thousand in the 8 months I have had this computer. Brand new and it has errors dating from the moment I pulled it out of the box. How could this be?
    Even so I would like to give a factory reset a try. My question is, what exactly does it do? I understand files such as doc, pix, vids will be erased; applications too. Does it actually restore all system files or is it more like a band-aid that fixes errors?
    If there are better options what are they?
    Thank you for your time
    Donald
    Factory Reset formats the hdd and does a complete reinstall of everything. Many times this corrects a flaky install from the factory. If you still have problems after doing the Factory Reset, check your drivers page for an update which might help>>HERE
