How to compress a video to fit in iDvd?

I am brand new to iMovie/iDVD but think I'm going to love them. However, I have a newbie question about "shrinking" a movie to fit.
Originally I created a movie in iMovie. No chapters, just two short transitions. Exported it as "Large" to Media Browswer (it is meant for TV).  When I open iDVD, I want to forgo the menu, so I simply dropped my iMovie file onto the first blank box in the "DVD Map" section and set it to loop. (A yellow triangle appears on the excluded Menu that says "Menu Contains No Buttons," but I think that may be unrelated to my issue).
When I look at Project > Info, I see that my file is 135 minutes and 4.30 GB -- just over the limit of a traditional DVD-R.  Encoding is set to "high quality." When I try to burn, it simply tells me that there is not enough space and I must remove some content for it to fit.
Is there no way that iDVD can "shrink" it with some quality loss like other programs? If not, how would I go about burning this to a DVD (either through iDVD or another program?)

Hi
A single-layer DVD will accept 90 minutes of video
No - in Pro Quality - max is 120 minutes.
• Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
• Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
But still same answer
• Shorten it - or -
• Use Roxio Toast™
• or DL-DVDs (to me they don't work OK - but that's just me)

  • How to compress a video in iPhoto to QuickTime?

    Hello,
I'm having a rough time here and could use some assistance. I took a video with my Canon camera, and then I transferred this video to my iPhoto program. The video size is 177 MB.
Now I need to upload this video to a website, but I am told that it is too large and needs to be compressed. I have searched through the Forum Discussions here on the Apple website, and now I'm even more confused than when I started.
Can someone please give me some hints as to how I can accomplish such a thing? Here are the specifics:
-I have the "Pro" version of QuickTime if that helps (version 7.5.5)
-I am using iPhoto version 7.1.5 (iPhoto '08)
-I am using a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel chip, with OS 10.5.5
If possible, I would really appreciate it if the explanation can be as non-techy as possible so that I can understand it. In searching the forum, I found some things that might be what I'm looking for but I did not understand a word of it. I've been a Mac user since 1985, but this is the first time I've done anything with video.
If it helps at all, here is what I did so far (without success):
-I took the video in iPhoto, and I dragged it to my desktop
-I then opened up QuickTime Pro
-Once in QuickTime Pro, I went to the "File" menu
-From here, I went to "Export"
-I then saw a bunch of things that I did not understand, so I just clicked "OK"
-I then saw a progress bar as they file might have compressed??
-A folder appeared on my desktop with 2 versions of my original video in it, and they were both for the iPhone? Not sure I understand this.
-When I get "Information" about the new files, the size was reduced from the original 177 MB size to a new size of 11.5 MB. However, this new size does not work when I upload it to the internet. Instead, a small QuickTime movie window appears with the QuickTime logo and a question mark.
I'm really lost and would appreciate some help.
    Thank you!

    Hi Rick,
Thanks for the information. I'm still swimming upstream as I learn more things and try to understand the various words/phrases/abbreviations that are being talked about.
Regarding the presets in QuickTime for exporting, it is still a mystery to me. I understand that you select "File" and then "Export" to open up the window to show all of the different things that can be done. But for a person such as myself who is not familiar with ANY of these things, I might as well be reading Chinese. This is part of the reason I am seeking help, but I'm finding that it's almost like pulling teeth to get a straightforward and simple answer to my question. Once I finally get the answer I am seeking, I think I will post a "cheat sheet" here in this thread so that others who search for an answer will find it and understand what to do.
Regarding MPEG Streamclip, I did a search on my hard drive and found no such application. After doing a Google search, I discovered that this is a program that must be downloaded. It is available here:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
I will download this application in a little while, and give it a shot. Before doing that, I think I will take some Pepcid, see a shrink, get a massage, do some biofeedback, and do some meditation to prep me for more frustration. (just kidding!)
Regarding tyros, I have to say that I have no idea what you mean here. I've never heard the word "tyros" before, and doing a Google search tells me something about making music with a keyboard.
Re: Flip4Mac....Okay, I did not know that there were other versions besides the free one that I have right now. Also, I do have VLC and it is a really excellent player. I have learned, through lots and lots of trial and error, that there are SO MANY things on the internet that Apple applications simply can not handle. This is extremely frustrating! But with VLC, it will pretty much play almost anything just by opening the file and that's it! For those wondering what VLC is, you can download it for free here:

  • How to compress my video?

So I'm on FCPX, and I have compressor 3. I've read that they aren't compatible, but I just exported my video to my desktop, and then am routing it to compressor 3 from there. My question is, what settings do I use to make the file smaller? I've never used compressor. I'm just an overall noob when it comes to video compression, settings, etc. My video is 800mb, and I want to make it smaller so I can send it to my friend. Any help?

when you bought and installed Compressor, it came with a Manual
plus, the Manual is online avail
    http://help.apple.com/compressor/mac/4.0.5/
basicly: h264, smaller resolution, low bitrate = reduces file-sizes (dramatically).
basicly#2: I would never 'send' large (video)files, just links to hosters, YT, Vimeo, Dropbox, Mega ...
    sorry for being grumpy:
but you're using professional tools - you should do your homework = read the manuals first; this board can not replace 'basic understanding' of the apps.

  • How to make Widescreen Videos Display correctly in iDVD?

I shot video with my sony dvcam in 4:3 format. PAL.
I took this video and edited it in iMovie and Exported as follows:
    DVCPRO PAL; Aspect: 16x9 25fps.
Size: 720x576 16:9 (i do not preserve aspect ratio).
I take this quicktime movie file and drop it into iDVD using a non Widescreen format menu (but i go ahead and choose it to switch to widescreen when it asks me).
I have 10 small videos i do this too and out of the 10 only 2 actually play in widescreen. The other 8 start off by displaying grey side vertical bars on either side of the screen then proceed to move into a 4:3 aspect.
Why is this happening? Why only 2 work? What is happening to the other 8?
Each of the .mov files i am using display in widescreen when i open and play in QuickTime.
(i have checked using QTPro and all the aspects are set to 1024 x 576 (PAL) for each movie.
Can anyone point me some clues as to what is happening?
    THANKS

    OK found my solution.
Something in iDVD was not translating the .mov file correctly and not showing my .mov files in proper 16:9 format. It did so with 2 of them but not the other 8.
So i found a work around that made it work perfectly.
I made a new iMovie file in widescreen format. Closed iMovie. Then did a "view contents" function (cntrl click on iMovie file and "view contents"). Next i dropped the 16x9 .mov file into the Media folder. Open the iMovie file again and move the .mov file from the Trash into the Timeline. Save iMovie file. Then i dropped the iMovie file into iDVD and now i have my 16x9 movie with no problem.
I had to make these different aspects and formats because i needed 4 DVDs of each movie:
    Fullscreen PAL
    Widescreen PAL
    Fullscreen NTSC
    Widescreen NTSC
Glad i got it all to work out OK.
Also be sure to select the correct fps in the iMovie preferences before making a new iMovie. And deselect the "pillarbox and letterbox" option.

  • How do I compress a video in iMovie 10.0.6?

    Hi everyone,
I have been searching Google for advice on how to compress a video file in iMovie, but the versions others are using are older than 10.0.6. So, for example, there is no Share menu on the update from which to Export to Quicktime as they suggest. I want to get a 800Mb video down to 200Mb. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

The best you can do in iMovie version 10 is share to file and then change the dimensions in the next window.
You can also share to file the original size and export it using QuickTime X.

  • How to compress a 120 VDV video with compressor?

hello, I would like to know how to compress a video more than 2hours on a DVD of 8.5G

    Just to add:
Essentially the same steps that I gave for FCP>Share would be followed in Compressor, except you would select the job in the Batch window and then go to the jobs action tab. (An advantage of using Compressor is that you could insert chapter markers.)

  • How to compress video files from 10.0.8?

I need to compress my videos to share them on Dropbox. In the share options, I only get the file to be reduced from 149 MB down to 95 MB. How can I reduce it more to better share it and use in teaching? (I need to embedd three short videos in a Power Point, now it takes about 20 minutes to upload it).
On different forums, it's described how you can export the files to Quick Time to reduce file size without changing the quality and some speak of using Compressor, however, I can't find any of this in iMovie 10.0.8.
Are there any app's you recommend using?
Appreciate all the help I can get :-)

    Hi Vishu Thakur,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand you want to move videos from your computer to your iPad Air and are trying to use Home Sharing to move the files. The process of moving files from your computer to your iPad is called syncing and would use iTunes to actually move the files from iTunes to the iPad. The article attached explains the process.

  • How do I compress a video that 160mb to 25 mb for an email

How do I compress a video that 160mb to 25 mb for an email

After it's re-encoded using a lossy format, the OP could also use an application (of choice) to create a segmented file (rar, etc.) and send each portion in individual emails. Most severs won't allow anything over 5 GB, so the user could choose 4 GB segments and the receiver could use a free un-rar app (quite a few available in the App Store - even more for Windows users) to extract the video.
    Just some random thoughts...

  • How to compress a short video clip to e-mail

Trying to figure out how to compress a short video clip to e-mail. Not sure how to do this thanks

    Sarah,
When you export/share your video you have a choice of formats.
Windows Media is a good option and you can choose a preset. Some of the options are DSL/Cable, Dialup, and others.
Steve's book has a nice section on Sharing Options, and he has a very nice article posted at Muvipix.com as well.

You need to register to be able to view the article but the article and registration are both free :)

  • I get motion drag when i compress my video into appleprores 422 and 422HQ any help on how to reduce this?

ok so when i compress my video into apple prores 422 and 422 HQ i always get drag on the image when it moves? and i know it not the image as it works fine on tape and in FCPX itsself? is there a special setting i have to use to reduce this? or is my video file bad?

You posting in the FCP7 forum.
I would consider sharing one or more of the following when asking for help:
    Souce footage codec, pixel dimensions
    Sequence codec & pixel dimensions
    How are you exporting it?
What kind of file are you ending up with? codec, size, etc.

  • How to compress my file

    Hi,
I am working on a wedding video that I shot with two cameras. I have edited it down and the final project was about 2 hours and 10 minutes. I used compressor and converted it to a mpeg2 which reduced the file to 1.9 gigs. However, I have come to discover that IDVD does not accept that file type.
Next I re compressed it into a .mov, but that only reduced it to 10 gigs - which won't fit on a standard size dvd...
I re-edited the film to 1 hour and 30 minutes, but still the file size is just over 7 gigs as a .mov.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to compress it without having to whittle it down to under an hour?
    Thanks for your help.

When I initially finished the project, I exported as a Quicktime movie and it was 49+ gigs! (Yikes!)
Still learning the Final Cut Suite and opened up Compressor for the first time realizing that it was the tool I needed. I compressed it down to 1.91 gigs, but did so as a .mpg - which I learned was not compatible with either iDVD or Studio Pro.
That's when I scrolled down the list of "settings" and realized I could make it a .mov, which only got it down to 10 gigs. Which is where I was when I posted for help.
I think I finally got it now, thank you so much for the help and advice...

  • How to compress DV into smaller size?

    Hi.
I need to know how to compress a DV file to say 60% of it's original size. I'm trying to pre-compress these files so that they will fit on a single DVD without using Toast on the final burn. In other words I want to compress the DV files without compressing the DVDSP menus etc.
    Sandy

sandy, are you trying to make a data dvd with a quicktime (dv compressed) movie file or a dvd-video?
in the first case; dv has only one compression setting, there is no way to change it, unless you compress using a different codec.
in the latter case, you'll be wanting to compress to m2v (mpeg2) and probably ac3 for the audio
    hope this helps

  • How to compress .MOV files?

So, I have a monster 4GB folder full of .MOV files shot on an iPhone 4 that I need to compress small enough to fit on two or three 700MB discs - or a 2GB flash drive. However, I don't really know how to it. I used the Archive Utility to zip it and the folder is still the same size as the original, so I assume that doesn't truly "compress" things. Is it possible to compress in iMovie (and if so, how), or will I need freeware to do it? Or is it even possible at all?

Is it possible to compress in iMovie (and if so, how), or will I need freeware to do it? Or is it even possible at all?
The basic answer here is that any converter app that exports the audio + video data to a lower combined total data rate will produce a small file. However, there is a limit to your ability to decrease the data rates and still produce useable output. In general, decreasing the data rate will drecrease quality unless you also decrease the dimensions of the targeted encoding matrix and/or otherwise modify the distribution of data per unit of time. In most cases the basic strategy is to use a high effeciency codec export option that allows the user to manually modify the export settings to produce the most compact file with a level of quality that the user "can live with." How low you can go will usually depend on the preferences of the specific user. Since your iPhone files are already highly compressed, my personal recommendation in your case would really be to move up to higher density optical media (e.g., DVD) or break down and spend the $10-$20 it would take to upgrade to a 16 GB or 32 GB drive.
